Summer fun

I’m back home from vacation, and life is slowly returning to normal…or at least what passes for normal around these parts! I’d just like it noted that from July 1-17, what should have been the busiest times of the summer, not one thing happened. Then, in the next two weeks, Kovalchuk signed (then “un-signed”), Ponikarovsky signed and Greene had surgery. For those wondering when next summer’s flurry of activity will take place, I can assure you it will be from July 17-29.

For now, it’s good to have the ability to blog/report/call/text normally again. We’ll see where the rest of the summer takes the Kings. Am I the only one who gets the feeling that, despite his protestations to the contrary, Dean Lombardi is still waiting to see how the Kovalchuk situation plays out?

Here’s something to pass along from vacation. I volunteer at a high school journalism workshop for two weeks, and one of my colleagues there is Steve Harvey, longtime writer/columnist for the Times and the Herald-Examiner. He shared that he had written a story in 1966 about the naming of the Kings, and upon his return home, he sent me a copy of the clip.

Steve’s story references a contest that was held to name the team, and notes that a Harry J. Mullen of Pasadena won the contest, receiving “a color television set and a portable FM-AM transistor radio as well as two season tickets and a season parking pass for the Kings’ first year.” Pretty funny stuff… I’ll attach the clip below, for those interested in the history…
