RFAs all aboard

The Kings have now locked up all their restricted free agents for next season, as Rich Clune, Corey Elkins and Trevor Lewis have signed one-year contracts. (UPDATE: I’m told that all the players accepted their qualifying offers.)

Nothing new on the Ilya Kovalchuk front, although you can be almost certain that something will break soon. Why? Because I’m leaving tomorrow for my annual trip. So I’ll be lugging around the laptop like it’s the president’s “nuclear football,” and I’ll wait for the latest developments. In life, timing is everything!

Could you imagine Ilya AND Ryan?

    OK, waking up now….

You’d be giving up a 1st round 2nd round and a 3rd round for bobby and have to trade someone for that cap space. Say 5M for bobby and 6.5-7 for Ilya thats 12M

    Darko Reply:

@Mike L, We have the next five years locked up, thats why we’re drafting high schoolers. We can afford to miss those picks if we’re able to get ryan for 5.Then we still have dough for a top four Dman

@Cynic, There’s no gaurantee that the Ducks won’t hose us next year.Who’s to say they won’t tender qualifiying offers to our 3 main players next year?Locking them up before the season ends will be paramount.Bobby’s fair game, since he doesn’t want to be a Duck anyway.

1 year left on his deal I believe.

We might be able to trade him for a bag of chips. Maybe not a brand name, maybe not even in a bag. Think more along the lines of nacho cheese dust at the bottom when all the big chips are eaten.

I’m guessing he gets stashed in Manchester unless Bernier TOTALLY screws the pooch in camp, which I very much doubt.

He’ll come here and suck, then pull an Allison and get “hurt” so he can sit out the rest of the season only to go play somewhere else and do well. Kings don’t need him. They have a team with a lot of potential, and I’m willing to wait another year for them to fully develop instead of breaking the bank with this guy.

my opinion is that Kovalchuk is already signed, I highly doubt that ML and DL would go on a vacy in the middle of possibly the biggest free agent signing ever in kings history. @kingsfan4life,

Kovy wears #71 for Team Russia. I don’t think a deal is DONE, but I think perhaps the years and money have been agreed on but it might be the 2012-2013 salary and perhaps when and if he gets a NTC/NMC when it would take effect in the contract.

I have a feeling something may be announced tomorrow with a press conference tomorrow or on Modnay for a big PR hit and to start the week but thats wishful thinking at this point, since we don’t know anything other than they’ve been close

    [Reply]

    Kevin Y Reply:

    @Mike L,

Kinda weird… Kovalchuk wears #71 for Russia because they’ve retired #17 for Valeri Kharlamov, whom Kovalchuk honors by wearing his number.

The natives speak of this entity that they call Rich, I have tried to make contact but no response as of yet. I will try again to escape the island today but I fear the same result as before. The natives are becoming increasingly restless and are devided. They want to summon Kovalchuck however many fear it will anger the other Gods Doughty,Johnson and the one they call Simmer, their sacrifice for the coming seasons may be in jeopordy if the Kovalchuck is summoned . Well it is time to prepare the magic elixir to make me calm for my attempted journey to rejoin society, I also have found this green bud that grows on the plants here, I have dried it and will now try to smoke it to see if it has medicinal properties . If there are no other major additions or trades before the season, what are the expectations for next season? I think a top four conference finish in the regular season and at least one playoff series win is not too much to ask for.

    [Reply]

    Kevin Y Reply:

    @sstephen17,

I’ve said this before: I think if we get Kovalchuk, assuming our defense and goaltending is at least as good as it was last year, winning the division is a realistic goal.

The Sharks are gonna be good, but without Nabokov, they could lose a few more games. I think it would be a three horse race between LA, SJ, and Phoenix, one that we should think we CAN win.

    [Reply]

    sstephen17 Reply:

@Kevin Y, Yes, winning the division is very realistic. I really don’t think Phoenix will be in the race though. They have already lost a few pieces and they won’t sneak up on many teams next season.

With regards to the conference, Vancouver got better with their defenseman upgrades. Chicago gave up a lot of parts during their fire sale. Detroit possibly gets better as well if they don’t have the same number of injuries they faced last year. Other than those three, I’m not sure on how many other teams will have gotten significantly better.

    [Reply]

    Kevin Y Reply:

    @sstephen17,

    What I think CAN happen:

    1) Vancouver (very underrated, outside of Western Canada)
    2) Chicago
    3) Los Angeles
    4) San Jose
    5) Detroit
    6) Phoenix
    7) St. Louis
    8-15) Really, it’s a toss-up for everybody else.

I think Phoenix is gonna be, maybe not AS good, but a good team still. Losing Zbynek Michalek hurts, so Bryzgalov needs to be the goaltender he was last year. He’s the key there; without him, they suck… who’s their backup, LaBarbera?

Lets be patient and hope it all works out for the Kings, and if not, well, we weren”t too bad without Kovi so a couple trades and we will be in the hunt. Just my humble opinion.

This whole thing is driving me nukin futs!!!!

We eagerly await the day to come to pass when Kovalchuk sings and we all speculate as to line combinations. We’re going to be very deep at forward and goalie. It will be a dilemma certainly worth having come next season.

I’m very, very concerned about our defense though. All the RFAs are offensive players. Congrats to Elkings, Richardson, Clune etc. There is no movement or talk about shoring up the defense. Our 4-6 need to be solid and be able to play solid minutes. To be in the same class as Chicago, Detroit, Vancouver and San Jose, who are also very deep teams, we need to add at least one more shut down guy and another solid puck moving defense man in the 4-6 category. The third and forth line players on the aforementioned teams are speedy grinders who all possess skill enough to put the puck in the net. LA last year did very well shutting down top lines (look at the plus minus of Doughty, Scuderi, Simmonds and Handzus) but too often it was third and fourth line guys on opposing teams that scored key goals and had puck possession time in our zone that created havoc for our top line players and cost us games. This game is about mistakes in the defensive and neutral zones and we need to limit that liability. Shoring up this aspect of our game will certainly be as important as signing Kovalchuk.

There’s too much uncertainty, in my mind, regarding Hickey, Teubert and Voynov our top defensive prospects. Muzzin had a good playoffs for the Monarchs but could he play key minutes? If Hickey can come in as a solid number 4 or 5 I think that will help. Playing him with Green might make for a good fit. That’s just it. There’s too many what if scenarios on D. Getting Scuderi was brilliant and with OD gone we will need another veteran presence that can play as a number 3-5.

    [Reply]

    GoKings09 Reply:

    @Bonvivant1,

Our D for next year as i see it so far is:

    Doughty-Scuderi
    Johnson-unknown
    Greene-Rookie puck mover

It would be best to add a veteran shutdown free agent to pair with Johnson and then let the rookies battle it out for the final spot as Greene’s partner. Willie Mitchell(if he is over his concussion issues) or some other free agent(i know there are more but can’t think of any)

This allows us to put Greene in a 3rd line role he is probably best at with PK time as well and have our rookie not being relied on for big minutes and being able to adapt to the league. Really though our top 3 are set and one bottom pairing guy with Greene so there are two spots open which most likely will go to one prospect and one veteran free agent.

    [Reply]

    DougS Reply:

    @GoKings09, Bonvivant 1

Another way of looking at it is that the Kings’ baseline requirement for a veteran free agent D this summer is to find someone who will be no worse than O’Donnell was last season.

I leave it to others to debate how difficult this will be.

    [Reply]

    tuan jim Reply:

    @DougS,

I love OD and really wish him well in Philly.

But smart as he is, it did seem last season as though he’d lost more than a step. He got squirreled by plays that he’d always handled well in the past.

Obviously what I saw was seen by people with more hockey brains than I have. Otherwise his contract — pretty cheap for a Cup winner with his size and know-how — would have been renewed.

Well, if everyones right, today will announce the signing of Kovi. Im all in favor of it but the worry factor is the contract. He isnt worthy of a Ovechkin type contract! I wouldnt mind a 7-8 mill year deal. I hope its a right contract for the right price. Kovi is good but not great. Someone today pointed out, that when Kovi got traded Atlanta got better as NJ got worse. If this is true there are many things that can speculate on the team or him as a player. However, he is a goal scorer, and we need that. Just as long as its right. We cant afford to lose are key players. So, if we get Kovi, be happy, but make sure the price is right. If we dont get Kovi, than look at the bright side of the situation. It was too much for a team that needs to rely on its other players, as well. Either way, I will support the Kings and be greatful with whatever decision they make.

However long it takes to sign him…I will be ok with because I know DL stuck to his game plan and we made the right deal to benefit this Kings team well on its way to a Stanley Cup…

GO KINGS GO… GO KINGS GO…

I posted that THE ANNOUNCEMENT would be made on July 20 — the anniversaries of our landing on the moon and of the Valkyrie plot to kill Hitler. Something happened to that post. It vanished into the fog.

I don’t have any idea what the terms of THE DEAL are — if, in fact, there’s any deal at all. But I assume that any such deal will last a lotta years.

If so, Kovy is likely to be a King for the rest of my life. As I trudge my way into Oldfarthood, I won’t have the same hopes to look forward to as each new hockey season starts. Those hopes will already be realized. The dreams — perhaps the last ones I’ll ever have — are pretty much riding on a team that’s constituted more or less the way it’s constituted now, so far as our “core” players are/will be concerned.

My own reservations about signing Kovy don’t matter to the younger generations of Kings fans. That’s only just. I’ve read that Moses toughened the mass of exiles he led by driving them to wander in the desert for forty years — more than enough time for the generation that knew only slavery and oppression to die out and be replaced by a stronger, more resolute people, a people who didn’t waste time pondering past failures but made plans for a successful future.

By the same token it’s probably better that old-time fans like me, who’ve spent a chunk of their lives cheering on a team that — except for a handful of seasons — was almost never taken seriously, should die off and be replaced by the young, by fans who will make up that winning “culture” that DL is so fond of talking about. It’s about time that we think only how to win, not how to make excuses for losing.

For some reason — no doubt the result of MANY past disappointments — I don’t see Kovy’s arrival with that same messianic passion that seems to motivate people on this site. No doubt for the same reason I’m blind to the Brave New World that has such left wings in it. What I do see are problems under every rock, a tomorrow that consists only of downsides.

So, with that bit of spiritual uplift, I take my leave of this Kovy extravaganza — at least until I wake up this morning.

Maybe you allready talked about this. But IF Kovi will sign, which will be his linemates?

To let him play with Kopitar is a must, but who should be on the right wing? Dustin Brown can add grit, Justin Wiliams is a chance, but maybe we get the best out of Williams to play him there. Where would he else be, with Zuz and Richardson?

I would love to see Simmonds with Kopi and Kovi, but as mentioned above, where does that place Williams.

In my opinion it should look something like this:

    Kovalchuk – Kopitar – Williams/Brown
    Smyth – Stoll – Williams/Brown
    Richardson – Handzus – Simmonds
    Clune – Cliche/Schenn – Westgarth/Clifford/Parse

In my opinion I think we should stick with Stoll for another year, and maybe play Loktionov/Schenn there at different times during the season. Moller will get his chance to. Stoll is very important for both our PP and PK, and ofcourse the faceoffs.

The defense is like someone other above posted:

    Doughty – Scuderi
    Johnson – Box
    Greene – Box

At least one of the boxes has to be aquired either by FA or trade.

the Quick/Bernier duell will be great to follow this year. What happens to poor Iceberg? I feel for him.. hope he get traded to a team that will give him trust.

Well, I think a few of us are expecting some news to finally break.

Hearing some rumors of a Gagne for Justin Williams trade. Gagne (in my mind, anyway) is the superior player, but both are injury-prone. I would like to see JW stick around one more year and see what happens, plus I think he could be a better fit (in the event we actually do land Kovy). And, JW has a lower cap hit, and I am not at all interested in helping Philly cap-wise.

Also, rumors of both Kaberle and Gleason being on our list of potential acquisitions. Don’t want to overpay for Kaberle, maybe Gleason comes cheaper. Kaberle obviously brings more, but Gleason is at least an upgrade from what we had.

    Thoughts…?

    [Reply]

    Puckin-A Reply:

@scvking, Well I think Gagne would be an upgrade, however they are both injury prone so Williams already knowing the system and having good chemistry when healthy might be smarter. I personally don’t want Kaberle, he is one dimensional, yeah he can score but we need D not a point guy on the PP. Gleason I think has bad knee problems but still performs. He might work out but I would go for a larger stay@ home Dman who has good puck moving skills.

    [Reply]

    NOW IMPRESSED Reply:

@scvking, I like the Gagne for JW trade. Like you said they are both injury prone, but Gagne is the better player. That’s what makes the cap hit so interesting. Gagne is the better player but because of his salary the trade straight up is a good trade for both teams.

    [Reply]

    Who Knows? Reply:

@NOW IMPRESSED, I don’t like this trade at all! If JW is on his game and doesn’t get injured he could put 30 in the back of the net. Same thing with Gagne. If he doesn’t get injured he could easily put 30 in the back of the net. Now would you rather pay a player who could POSSIBLY score 30 3.5MM or 5.25.

    [Reply]

    Atomic Steve Reply:

@scvking, I kind of like that trade, if we do sign Kovi our left side would be stacked. We’d be paying a lot for Gagne to be a 3rd line left winger but he is great in that roll. We already have a lot of talent on the right side and more coming thru the system as well.

the top 3 lines could be:

    Kovi-Kopi-Simmonds
    Smyth-Stoll-Brown
    Gagne-Zus-Ritchie

Time for ownership to panic and start trading away our future for a different ‘Superstar’ or maybe we can just keep the same team together, have another 1 round playoff series and try this all again next summer?

Can’t wait for Rich to get the scoop on what happened with Kovi to LA.

Well, bye bye to Hickey or Tuebert or Moeller. Hopefully Patrick Sharp coming the other way.

DL better have plan B ready to go within 48 hours, or else he’s going to have some really upset fans to deal with. Plan B could also involove re-signing Frolov…….Gulp.

Shot at a top three player in the league and the Kings blow it. Still a second rate organization.

Way to let us down, Dean & AEG. So embarrassed to be a Kings fan right now because of this management.

In epic fashion, I might add. Now lets trade for/sign some leftovers, walking wounded, and all-around crap. You know, just like every year.

We need to sign one veteren FA defensemen and were set. I suggest picking one from this list…

    1.) Andy Sutton
    2.) Jay McKee
    3.) Willie Mitchell
    4.) Mat Schneider
    5.) Garnet Exelby

If we could get one of those 5 dudes to pair up with Jack Johnson and have a rookie (Hickey, Voynov) fill the other missing spot than we will have a stellar D to match our stellar offense.

I’ll join you in the homicide. No wonder Dean goes on vacation…didn’t want to show his face after this joke. The fans get screwed again.

Lets go trade youth for a crippled has-been or never-was.

    This organization still sucks.

Like I said last time I was flamed, Kovi goes to NJ and we get Parise in return, as they need to clear cap room.

Saturday October 30. Devils at Kings. I’ve never advocated violence, but I am hoping Dean calls up every enforcer in the freaking organization for that game, and they check the crap out of Kovalchuk every time he touches the puck.
Cannot wait to see what NJ paid. Hope they busted their cap from now until 2015.

I don’t blame IK on this one. DL had plenty of time to get this done but history shows he can’t sign a FA even when they want to play for him.

Go ahead DL and keep overpaying trash to come here.

    Pathetic!!

  146. Mike L says:

Perhaps it meant the kings don’t have as much cap space as we thought. If this means keeping all core guys im for it. We still don’t know how much Kovy signed for. If its anything over 8M than good luck NJ. Now they have to dump salary to be under the cap.

And now comes the PR blitz/Damage control… This is going to be even more of a drama! I am so waiting to see if we end up trading Draft picks, assets ie.. (Hickey, Moller,Zatkoff, etc..) to get 30+ year old high priced salary dumps and 2nd level players…. I can’t wait to see plan B 19 days latter… I am hoping for the best it will take a miracle for us fans to not seem too pessimistic but stranger things have happened! Okay DL do your vodoo that you do!!!

DL just couldn’t close it = Cheap #&&*@^%#! Stringing us along and milking us for another year. Glad I didn’t renew my season tickets again. Hope you worked out a deal with LL (your master) to take some good skilled salary cappers off of his hands. Let’s see yer Plan B….. Waste of my valuable time.

Really hope we don’t find out the Devils took a… “home-town discount” to stay in the awesomeness that is Newark.

    40 years..Same ol’ Kings!!!

Well, like the Dodgers with their anti-Steinbrenner philosopy (take ALL you can and give NOTHING back)the Kings will not be getting a single penny from me next year! Gawd, I hate being a Kings fan!

  152. RickyM2 says:

Don’t think we’ll be better off with Kovy. He was better going to LA. We’re gonna lose Parise! That’s not so good for us in NJ

    [Reply]

  153. Mark1967 says:

I don’t think for a moment that Lou doesn’t have some type of cap thing worked out… Do not see him signing Kovy to Loose Parise… You have to trade assets but retain the core… He doesn’t have a track record of too many bad signings… But we will see..

  155. What did everyone expect???? The kings had a chance to do some damage in the playoffs last year and at the deadline who did D.L. sign???? Yeah thats right some real garbage…Modin was decent but what a joke!!!! D.L. knew we needed more firepower then that and he gave the Kings Fans a pile of Crap!! Another year! NOT AGAIN!!! DAM DAM DAM…Expect our good young guys to hold off on long deals now that they see whats happening with this organization!!!
