Time marches on…

It doesn’t appear as though there will be any Ilya Kovalchuk drama this afternoon or tonight. Kovalchuk’s agent, Jay Grossman, was scheduled to return to New York today, but beyond that, it doesn’t appear that anything has changed. Onward to Day 15, it seems.

In local news, for those curious about the players’ summer plans, a handful of current Kings will start their summer workouts in El Segundo next week. You might remember that last year’s summer work was touted by coaches and players as a significant time for team bonding, and this year, approximately half the team is scheduled to show up, at one point or another, during the next two weeks. That’s roughly the same number as last year, I believe.

    @v918,

    Interesting read. I’m sure I’ve got something all wrong here, but in regards to why LAK management might not like the idea of the deferred bonus, if there is a lockout that year, they’re paying Kovi for nothing, if there isn’t a lockout that year, aren’t they then paying Kovi more than they would if there weren’t a lockout? Yes it’s only $1m more than the other option, but it’s $11m more than the OTHER option of no bonus and no salary if there is a lockout. If that’s correct, sounds like a win-win for Kovi, and lose-lose for the Kings.

    God help the NHL if there’s another lockout.

    @Matt R, The moral of this story is what could the sports world be like without lawyers (rhetorical). I doubt IK cares much about such minutia, considering his player status vs. MBA in Finance. Look Out for “Fear of Fehr” and its well perceived. The mayans say World as we know it ends in 2012, same can be said for “Fear of Fehr” era! Its over in 2012 for NHL, if its Fear Fehr Days!! So now what about that signing bonus in 2012 please?

    @USHA#17,
    Donald Fehr, the former head of the MLB Players’ Association, is becoming a powerful dude in the NHLPA. He was a real hardass.

    If Fehr takes charge of the NHLPA going into the 2012 negotiations, I understand why 5holer is worried. He’s going to play chicken with the owners, and the fact that another labor stoppage with destroy the NHL concerns him not a bit. He’s a professional labor negotiator, and what concerns him is putting notches in his belt.

    EASportsMgt Reply:

    @v918, and @Quisp
    Thanks for posting that. Good comments and good feedback.
    Also in regards to the bonus, my understanding of that was that Kovi would take a smaller salary in order to accomdate the large bonus. But still the total value or total dollars paid was far north of what management was comfortable with on that deal.

    Moving on…..

    What are our options on D? We lost 2 starters in Jones and O’donnel. Mitchell looks like a good option but the concussion worries me, Sutton was brought up in other threads as an option but I read that he has mobility issues. At the same time we have 2-3 defensemen in the system who could be starters next year in Drewiskie, Voynov, and apparently Muzzin. I think we need to get one Vet Defensemen who would be slated as a starter but could ride in the press box if the young kid(s) are ready. So who do you guys think is our best bet, I am not considering trades here because that could be just about anyone. Kabarle in my opinion is a non option, the price would be too high and we already have a good starting 4 with JJ, DD, RS, and MG.

    [Reply]

    jet Reply:

    @Bobo, I thought Sutton be a good addition, while mobility is an issue, it is no greater than OD last season. He has a harder shot than OD, but may not have the leadership (see OD knocking the crap out of the Islander who he Drew during preseason). I think he would fit with Frannson fairly well if Frannson can play on the right. I think the price would be right.
    Morrisonn would be a great #4, but would probably be too expensive.
    Seidenburg would also be good, but Boston over paid so he would be expensive but probably available now that they are in cap purgatory.

    Johnsson or Mitchell would be helpful if they have unscrambled. Scuds was a perfect fit last season. I do not see one this year. Can any of these play better on the right side?

    I was wondering how impressed IK was with his visit? watching the ESPYs on TV and seeing all the huge production DOWNTOWN NEXT to STAPLES, I can’t help but think this has helped us(LA) with IK’s impression of our organization, as well as MLB ALL STAR game festivities. would this help him to settle for less?
    I WONDER if IK leaving a day early before his agent was planned?(heck i dunno if this is even true) The Perception of “DL’s GUY” leaving town for a “prior engagement”. That could be perceived as losing him to the general hockey public.(loyal kings fans,prospective GMs, and more)
    I WONDER if DL would feel(or cares) the added pressure from the idea of loyal kings fans, and organizational supporters as well as the KINGS people within the organization of IK leaving town backlash.

    I WONDER if Grossman told IK to leave town before him, and that’d GROSSMAN would stay to work on IK’s deal, only to leave a day or two later to come home to IK with his best effort of negotiation.
    I WONDER why my season tix went up $128 per 200 level seat, and where all that extra mula is going to?(mula for IK?? Doughty, Simmonds)
    I WONDER if this hangup is all because of the threat of the CBA and it’s aftermath effects. what a shame, get it done $7 mil Commish.
    I WONDER if we can still afford Frolov after all of this.dumb idea i know.
    I WONDER, having just getting back from VEGAS, why the KINGS are a 16/1 and the DEVILS are 15/1 to win the cup. and how much it would change when/if and how much IT’ll change when IK signs.

    I DON’T WONDER if this is a strategic plan of events of tactics that Grossman, has perfected in his tenure as a successful sports Agent; I KNOW IT IS!!! DL is an Agent for the kings, Grossman is an agent for IK.. both are very very good at what they do. hence maybe the reason for the 14 days of negotiating or 14day poker tournament.
    I DON”T WONDER if Grossman has sent Jersey a new offer based on his visit to LA. I’m sure he didnt tell JERSEY LA’s Real offer but an inflated, more lucrative deal. (raise you DL). JERSEY hand, CHECK? RAISE? or ALL IN? of course not likely due to Parise future considerations IMHO…

    sorry, I was just wondering…

    We’re frustrated as fans, but I’m pretty certain nobody involved in trying to get this deal done is frustrated. It seems like if a deal is reached, both sides will be pleased with it. These are professionals, and this is a decision for Kovalchuk that basically comes down to where he will likely be for the rest of his career, a permanent residence for his family as well as his probably last contract. If either side was frustrated, this would be over by now. I think both sides want to work out a deal, we just have to wait and see if it can be done. As much as it feels like torture now, its probably best in the long run that each side took their time should they come to an agreement.

    Don’t forget too that our own GM, Dean Lombardi is no slouch of a lawyer as well. DL graduated (with honors) from Tulane Univ, specializing in labor law. (Oh- and he also initially worked as a Sports Agent working/learning under the legendary Art Kaminsky.)

    I read on ESPN.com that Grossman is actually considered a very good, very well respected Agent. And while he may not have played his “2010 market value” trump card very well- this is also his biggest client, so naturally he’s been looking for the biggest payday possible- and has been dreaming, planning and scheming over this one for what- 2-3 years now?

    My point is … I’m really not surprised at all – considering the “players” involved here – that this card game has dragged on and on and on. And on.

    Man, I can’t even think about Richardson. I have Kovalchuk Disorder. It causes short masturbatory urges and skin cutting. I’m gonna have “refresh” tatooed on my forehead. If he doesn’t sign with Kings, can you imagine the boos this dude gets at Staples? Another bummer is that other FA’s DL could have gone after are signed during the chase for Kovi. I still think that New Jersey is too defensive a team to be a great place to play for him. God willing this ends soon. If he wants to win and be an offensive wonder, I still say he picks the Kings.

    Time to see what DL can get from the Chicago fire-sale, maybe Poni & Afinogenov as UFAs, or there will be a lot of Monarchs at Staples. Kovi may pull a Lindros here and refuse to play where he belongs at this rate.

    DL owes us his best effort at building a team. At some point, the best effort expended at Kovi is maxed out and it is time to switch to Plan B at the risk of having nothing. Taking nothing away from his skills, they aren’t worth much if he won’t suit up.

Ya, right. I’m with most of you constantly checking and refreshing. But as we approach another day, I have a proposition that I haven’t seen posed nearly as much.
    A couple of days ago when CHI announced it would match Hjalmarsson’s offer sheet it became obvious more bodies would be moving. And into my head popped “Patrick Sharp, come on down!”
    He is a sniper in his prime and he has a very manageable cap hit at 3.9 per for the next two seasons. All he would cost are a couple of valuable prospects from the Kings’ now loaded farm system as the deal would be a salary dump for CHI.
    Honestly, how can this not have immediately become plan B? Heck, he could even be plan A.2 as he could be packaged in a 3-way deal to land the Kings that 4th D-man the so badly covet.

    I love Patrick Sharp but forget the notion that a couple of valuable prospects is all it will take to get him. His contract is not a cap killer at the moment, which means pretty much every team in the NHL can and will be in on the trade sweepstakes. I seriously doubt Kings or anyone else will be able to get him without surrendering Good,young, cheap NHL talent, plus valuabele prospects.
    Simmonds would almost certainly be a part of that deal and assume they’ll want a guy like Bernier as well.

    @EAsportmgt,
    What are your thoughts about owners and the league trying everything in their power to avoid another lockout? Seems like it would be a disaster for the sport considering the attention hockey has gotten from the olympics this year to the great finals and tv ratings for both. As well the winter classic being a hit. It would just be such a huge loss of momentum. Feels like they are still recovering from the last one. What do you think the sticking points would be in negotiations? As I mentioned in an earlier post it would be way less of a disturbance IMO to just keep the cap idle for a few years rather than lower it, until it catches back up to where (the owners?) think it should be. eventually its the same effect. or lower it 1-1.5 mil per year for a few then let it idle for a few.
    What do you think?, regards

    scvking Reply:

    @kingfish,
    Not to butt in here, but a few thoughts on a potential stoppage…

    The league, according to specualtion, may want to lower the salary cap. From what I gather, that is the main threat to labor peace. Perhaps there may be some tweaking of other issues, but I would guess that is the main issue.

    For as much as your commment makes sense about it not being in the best interest of the league to have another stoppage, that seldom seems to enter into the thinking, at least from the perspective of the owners.

    The real key to the next CBA is whether or not Donald Fehr ends up being the next union leader. (That has been rumored, but I don’t believe it is final, yet). Fehr had been the head of the MLB players union and was not the slightest bit shy about using strikes to gain negotiating advantages, and during his time, MLB had numerous strikes and lockouts. He is a very effective leader for the players, but his entry into the hockey world does not bode well for labor peace.

    Why isn’t it looking good? We have had no DL, TL, or Hammond quotes that have said that things are rocky. Take Dean going to Denver to meet Uncle Phil as Dean trying to get a massive contract greenlighted.

    Things like this don’t happen overnight, Since it’s taking so long I would guess it would be a rather large contract in money and in years. It’s a big deal for both sides. The kings are going to spend a lot of money on this guy and he is going to be getting a lot of money. Why wouldn’t they want to take their time and make sure everything is good.

    Since July 1st, have we really heard any credible rumors that he was negotiating with other teams? There was the Devils offer and then the phantom Islanders offer, that’s it. As far as I’ve read there have been no talks between him and other teams as much as there have been with the Kings.

    He wants to play here, he just wants big money.

    Have faith in Dean that he hasn’t publicly walked away from the table. He’s been in this since day one.

    After Zatkoff gets a full season at Manchester I think there’s a real chance that he will be the backup with the Kings for the 2010-2011 season. I strongly believe that either Bernie or Quick will be traded after this season which will open up a spot for Zatkoff.

    EASportsMgt Reply:

    @TB,
    I agree, I think this year depending on camp, we will see Quick and Bernier, which leaves Ersberg to clear waivers. If he does he wont be recalled because he probably wont re-clear waivers (remember anyone who picks him up at that point only picks up half his salary).
    So EE will be down with Zatkoff in Manchester.
    I would be surprised to see EE traded if Bernier sticks which he more than likely will.
    After a full season in Manchester for Zatkoff then we can potentially have three very solid netminders in camp the following year and Zatkoff will be an RFA that year also.
    Let’s not forget the Kings have Martin Jones after that and he isn’t a slouch either, not to mention Berube after that.
    Goalies are definetely not the Kings weakness and neither is D.

    Remember that book that Rich wrote about the other Day, Money Players, that talked about the Free agency blitz, well it also talked about the CBA and the NHLPA. One thing it mentioned and don’t quote me on this but it referred to how the owners didn’t really respect the NHLPA head Ted Saskin. They knew that they could push him around and that eventually the players union would crumble and want to settle the dispute and agree on the new CBA. Although it didn’t crumble, it did build a wedge and of course they did agree on the CBA.
    I say this because Donald Fehr is not a man you can push around. The only reason why he hasn’t been hired is because he wants a shorter contract and I’m sure the NHLPA wants him longer.
    Nevertheless, this guy is well respected. Yes the owners may try to lower the cap but if they do, you better believe the players will get something in return this time. I think both sides will play hardball tactics as always of course but the owners I think this time know that Mr. Fehr will get a good deal done for his players and hopefully prevent a work stoppage. Although it seems from hearing quotes from Lou and DL both are very skeptical about the new CBA and maybe a potential work stoppage.
