Former Kings prospect Drew Bagnall, a defenseman, has signed a one-year contract with the Minnesota Wild. Bagnall, 26, had two goals and 10 assists in 58 games with Manchester last season, but never cracked the NHL level during his three seasons in the Kings organization. More importantly, Bagnall was the captain of the Monarchs, so it will be interesting to see who inherits that role next season. Typically, it has been an older player — “older” being relative, of course — but first we’ll have to see which prospects graduate to the NHL level. Marc-Andre Cliche and Trevor Lewis earned praise for their leadership last season. Thomas Hickey has also been a captain at a couple levels.
Hi Rich, did anyone else notice that Dave Taylor was named Director of Player Personnel with St. Louis Blues as of yesterday?

@Crash Davis, I’m not Rich, but I did notice that a few other people brought that up yesterday on this blog. I did not hear anything on nhl network or espn about it though.

@NealKingBoy,
Thanks for the blog update. There were SO MANY people posting yesterday it just became too much to try and read it all. As for Taylor, I would think that his position could mean that he can live in L.A. and work out of his home office for paperwork then hits the airport to go to games & scout. Shows-up in St. Louis 6-7x a year for meetings.

@Crash Davis, Good for Mr. Taylor. Sounds like he has a great job now. I have only been a kings fan since the 06-07 season and I am only a youngster, so I sadly was not around to see the great one or Taylor play for the club. Did you ever see them play, Crash?

@Crash Davis, Hey guys, yes, it was mentioned during the chat, but it was very, very easy to miss, I’m certain. It’s worth posting a link here, for sure. Taylor, as a side note, goes back to work with Doug Armstrong, the same partnership they had in Dallas for a while.

OK, i am just trying to be funny: gallows humor.
players are LEAVING us, to date, and no one wants to come HERE!
i guess Palm Trees are over-rated, too!
there is obviously a ‘who’s going to blink first’ game going on with Kovi’s agent.
i am still behind Dean. other players besides a single sniper, wins the cup. some other very good player may become available during the season. keep our team together that on the varsity, and add what you can without making a hole someplace else. we definitely need to sign our young varsity players in the future.

Kings have always been the cheap, cheaper and cheapest team and ownership. Count the number of Stanley Cup Banners we have hanging and that is proof of that. We need single ownership rather than corporate ownership of the Kings b4 this team moves up to that elite level.

@Gjamris, And your basis for this comment is….? Im pretty sure AEG hasn’t owned this team for 40 years. Also, DL offered Hossa the same contract he accepted from Chicago. Doesn’t seem that is something the “cheapest team and ownership” do. Did the Kings have the lowest payroll last year? You do realize there is a salary cap and DD, JJ, JB and Simmonds all have to be signed right?

@Ten For Instigating,
We will sign those guys during the year, maybe even this summer, taking Smyth, Stoll, Zeus off the payroll will leave plenty of space to get them done.

@Krusher, And who will replace Smyth, Stoll and Zues? Shenn is slotted to be the #2 center but, he still has a cap hit. You still want a good team around Kovi. If you dont have good players on all lines, we are Atlanta. If we get rid of Smyth and Frolov, we again are left with 1 left wing. Maybe Drew will double shift and play a little wing.

@Ten For Instigating,
That’s why DL is the GM and none of the armchair GM’s on the blog wanting us DL to sign Kovi regardless of the cost. Unlike them, DL is thinking of keeping the core intact and not mortgaging the future just to make the big deal.

What I’m interested in is who the Kings will sign at the blueline? Souray is too expensive for DL taste and I doubt he will give up prospects in a trade… So who do the Kings target that is left on the market? or via trade? Scudari/prospect for Souray?

No if the Kings picked him up off waivers they would be responcible for all his contract.
If it was “re-entry” waivers then Edmonton would have to pay 50%

Scuderi is a great defencemen. Why would we give him up ? Fereal.
Souray is on waivers. we could pick him up for free (well 5 million is his cap hit) but he’s injury prone and the cap hit’s too high

Word is that Bobby Ryan is messing with the Ducks.
Their GM is now talking publicly about the offers being turned down.

Don’t forget about the RFAs too because if the Kovi deal does not go down, the Kings WILL need a backup plan.

Gabe and NOW Drew. Absolute character players and just flat out great people. wonder who will now step up in the Monarch’s locker room and become the leader.
Plus after yesterday’s free agent craziness we may lose Westie who will be a good replacement for Ivannes. Westie deserves the chance. He worked his butt off before the injury at playoff time.
But we have some young studs coming on defense change isn’t always a bad thing.
Plus, that’s the way of the minor leagues. BUT it still is tough to see Gabe and Drew leave.
Good luck boys! 106 day left till opening night for our Manchester Monarch’s.

@Manchester Connection,
Honestly, I’m not that upset to see Gabe go. He’s a good enough AHL level player, but there’s only so long that I want to watch someone have seasons that are good but not great by AHL standards with no signs of improving to become a useful part of the Kings.
Bagnall on the other hand I’ll miss. I shudder to think what’s going to happen with guys like Campbell potentially getting increased playing time. That said, Drew’s had knee issues on and off the past two years, so there’s no way of telling that he’d even be around a significant portion of the coming season.

@holly,
I am sad to see Gabe go in the sense that there were times where he was an absolute spark plug. But, being a Monarchs season ticket holder, I’ve watched Gabe through the years getting slower and slower, defensemen passing him like he was parked. He is great on the PK though, but time to make room for the younger talent.
Now for Bags…IT F(#&$#&$&#G SUCKS!!! Seriously? He can hit, shoot, skate, fantastic leader, incredible character and intense as all hell!!! What the hell are the Kings thinking? Him and Westie are my daughter’s favorite players too because of how they treat their fans. Drew, Bud, Westie, Trevs, Bernie, Zeiler, and Alec were the best guys to hang with and ALWAYS made time for thier fans….ALWAYS. And they went hard all the time on the ice. It’s one thing to be sad they’re leaving the Jungle to go to the Staples center…it’s another to see them go to another team because the ownership doesn’t know how to recognize talent.
GABE AND DREW…YOU WILL BE MISSED ON AND OFF THE ICE.
