It’s getting drafty

Maxim Kitsyn, the Kings’ sixth-round draft pick last week, was part of another draft today. The OHL’s Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors acquired Kitsyn’s rights during the CHL import draft. As written last week, Kitsyn is still under contract to his KHL team, but Kitsyn’s agent said he will attempt to get Kitsyn out of that contract before the end of this year, as Kitsyn wants to play junior hockey in North America and the Kings would prefer to have him here as well. Kitsyn is expected to participate in this week’s developmental camp.

    Anyone else think he looks a little like Ivan Drago? Check out the interview he did with Daryl Evans. I know it was because he speaks almost no English, but man did he look super uncomfortable during the interview!

    @Matt R,

    I didn’t think he looked uncomfortable really. I just thought it was hilarious on the level of the old Monty Python tabacconist skit. “My hovercraft is foool of eeels.”

    @quisp,

    If that wasn’t an uncomfortable looking person, I don’t know what is. I suppose maybe he just really wanted to kill everyone around him.

    @Matt R, Dude is down right frightening, maybe we should get Hartnell and pick up Brashear and put them all on a line together…..YIKES they may not score but the other team would be in the hospitol by the end of the game. And He would do well in Hollywood, could be the new Rutger Hauer and remake the Hitchiker

    @Matt R,
    I think he looked pretty uncomfortable, but I write that off to language issues, and being a kid with a bunch of cameras focused on him. I noticed he seemed to edge away from the microphone a couple of times.

    He looks scary mainly because the cap covers all of his hair, and so it’s easy to imagine that he has some kind of Ivan Drago-type buzz cut underneath. Plus he’s probably goggle-eyed from nerves. If you look at his official portrait, he’s actually smiling, and he looks like any potato-fed Russian mother’s son.

    Good luck to him. I hope he scores many of “ze goals” for the Kings.

    @Tookie, Yea, I was hoping that with our first pick we couldv’e taken right winger Vladimir Tarasenko and with the 2nd pick left winger Krill Kabanov. Add them to our Russian center Andrei Lokionov and we’d have a young lethal Russian line.

    HF has a great thread about him from four years back, searched around for Kitsyn on Google and stumbled across it. 6′ 1″ as a fourteen-year-old, was initially hyped as the next Malkin??? A bunch of stuff about his potential, and some speculation that he might be using a false birthdate. Doesn’t make a lot of sense, if he’s using 12/24 as reported–that’s really not going to help him much.

    I e-mail Rich this question too but did you all see that O’Sullivan got put on waivers? If he got bought out too I imagine he could be a cheap pickup for anyone.

    I wasn’t his biggest fan but I could see him as a cheap pickup for LA as long as it’s a 2 way contract and it’s understood he’ll have to work hard to earn a spot even if that’s just on a 3rd or 4th line. And like I said no guarantee he won’t end up playing in Manchester. He could skate well and had good hands but maybe he’s not meant to be a top 6 guy.

    @JB,

    I really feel sorry for POS…

    Sometimes I think its the curse of his evil father. It’s heroic of POS to persevere through the abuses of his childhood. My question is, what happens if in some ways POS’s father was right in the critiques of his son’s game? It is the natural human instinct to tune an evil force out of your mind; sometimes they are the most impartial critics and the most important voice to hear.

    I’ve been strongly critical of POS on this site because I thought his talent was top-notch but his effort and desire to go into the tough spaces on the ice was far below par. Perhaps I was right; I wish I were wrong, and I wish Patrick would prove me so.

    JB Reply:

    @DougS, Well here’s how I see it. He was definetely overpaid but kudos to DL for recongnizing it at right time when he was able to get value out of him. I look at Richardson who was in same draft class as POS for comparison.

    Now POS is going to get $2 million from Edmonton but his biggest concern has to be showing he’s worthy of another chance. That could be an excellent motivator. Like I said he would need to come in at a low cost say $800k or less with understanding that if he doesn’t cut it he’ll be headed quick to Manchester or worse.

    I don’t know what his attitude or personal history is (which is what I asked Rich about) but like I said he may be hungry to prove himself. And maybe he should change his game to be more like a Richardson (good skater, shutdown role).

    Then again I may be crazy.

    @JB,
    This may be a ‘Come to Jesus’ type of experience for POS; who knows? For his sake, I hope so.

    His rep in the pros, as far as I can tell, is that he’s a soft player and has a bit of an attitude. IIRC, his draft position also slipped because of possible personality issues, although some of that was written off as just having to get him away from his crazy, abusive dad.

    I don’t completely write off the idea of bringing him back to LA at the right price. He’s still young enough to have some upside. The thing is, when you talk about bringing him back for $800k…. Well, there are kids on ELCs making more than that. So it’s kind of a lot to expect, even for someone who has had that Come to Jesus moment.

    Ok, since we are headed off topic… How about Modano at 1M for 1 year? Bottom 6 forward that can share with the young ‘uns what it takes. Could fill in on line 2 in needed situations????

    [Reply]

    Matt R Reply:

    @gralx,

    I was thinking the same thing after I read that he said LA is one of the places he would want to come. I don’t see how giving him $1M for 1 year could hurt if he’s ok with lower line duty. I say we go for it.

    [Reply]

    Moondoggie Reply:

    @gralx, Funny, I was thinking the same thing too. He’s lost a step or two but still has a great shot, is a ferocious competitor and a great leader for our young team. If he’d take a pay cut in a diminished roll, why not? It would give our young centers some more time to develop and you won’t get a much better team player and leader than Mike Modano in your lockeroom.

    My guess, he’ll probably sign with someone else who’s willing to play him more and give him more $$. I think he could get 2mil from the right team but I don’t see the Kings paying that kind of money for his services. Too bad, he’d be a great addition……

    Duckhunter Reply:

    @gralx,

    I’d take Modano in a heartbeat for 1 mil. We can make an “old fart” line of Smyth-Modano-Williams. I like it.

    Oh man I really hope not. I’ve had enough of taking chances on guys whose stock has been dropping like a rock. He had one good year next to Joe, because of Joe. Don’t bother.

    On the other hand, we could get Cheechoo, Modano, and Spezza and call it the resurrection line.
