A few things to share, so I’ll just throw them together in one item…
– Drew Doughty finished third in Norris Trophy voting, behind winner Duncan Keith of Chicago (1,096 votes, 76 first-place votes) and second-place Mike Green of Washington (831 votes, 34 first-place votes). Doughty (662 votes, 15 first-place votes) was named to the second-team NHL All-Star Team. Keith and Green were the first-team defensemen, while Doughty and Nicklas Lidstrom were second-team defensemen.
– Anze Kopitar finished fourth in voting for the Lady Byng Trophy.
– The Kings have filed their qualifying offers on their five restricted free agents: Marc-Andre Cliche, Rich Clune, Corey Elkins, Trevor Lewis and Brad Richardson.
– A reminder that tomorrow morning at the training facility in El Segundo, some of the top draft prospects will be on the ice for a kids clinic. Tyler Seguin, Taylor Hall, Brett Connolly, Erik Gudbranson, Cam Fowler and Long Beach native Emerson Etem will be on the ice, along with Willie O’Ree and Kings broadcasters Jim Fox and Daryl Evans. The on-ice clinic is scheduled to run from 10:30-11:30 a.m. and is free.
– John Stevens’ hiring as assistant coach will be announced tomorrow. A couple years back, here’s what Terry Murray said about Stevens, who was then the head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers while Murray was an assistant. “John delegates, and that’s the one thing you have to do in this business – rely on the people around you and above you to get the job done,” Murray told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “He’s doing it the right way. John is a real team guy, and he was that way through his playing days. When you’ve played the game and you’ve been on championship teams, no matter what level it is, you know it takes contributions from everyone in the locker room. It’s the same with the office team we have. It takes constant communication and sharing of ideas.”
I think Doughty should of finished 2nd in voting behind Keith who deserved it, but Doughty was way better than Green.

@Mike L,
When Harry Howell won the Norris in 1967, he said something to the effect that he would probably be best-remembered as the guy who last won the trophy before Bobby Orr won it for the rest of his career. Keith should have made a similar statement about himself and Drew Doughty!

Norris vote:
Keith 1096
Green 831
Doughty 662

@Dayman,
Not unreasonable. To end up paired with Lidstrom…seems reasonable. Did think Doughty would have been neck and neck with Green however.

I’m not upset Drew didn’t win but I’m mad that green got more votes. If anyone watched the playoffs u would know how pathetic Green is defensively

Its okay Doughts will nominated for many more years to come! The 8 is great!!!!

@Sydor25, I second that. Keith, I can take, but come on Green who is not going to rackup assists with Ovechkin & Backstrom on the ice. Too many people that don’t watch the late games voting.

The way I understand it – qualifying a player only means that they were offered a 10% raise over last season.

How can Green be that far ahead of Doughty? Pathetic, I’ll take this vote as a grain of salt. I’m sorry guys but Doughty won’t get th props he deserves unless he wins the cup.

Norris goes to the defenseman who demonstrates “all around” ability. Doughty should have Mike Green absolutely beat inthat category. The other two were also D men playing behind elite freakin players to beef their numbers like Ovechkin, Backstrom, Toews, Kane etc. Cheers to Duncan Keith anyways though.

I’ll bet Doughty doesn’t finish 3rd next season.
And Heidi Androl finished 1st in all of our hearts wearing that dress tonight… hubba-hubba.

@just a gigolo, She did the sideline reporting at the NHL awards show on Versus. If you have NHL Network, they’re re-rrunning the awards show all weekend. Heidi wore a white, form-fitting dress and she looked incredible. She did a good job too. I hope she isn’t leaving LA for Versus. That would suck.

How in the world is mike green a better defensemen then doughty…the only reason he was a finalist was because hes on the powerplay with ovechkin stock piling points…I have no problem with duncan keith winning cause hes a stud…but 3rd place for doughty?? ridiculous.

I understand the frustration about Green finishing that far ahead, but voting is done before the playoffs so scratch that evidence from your opinions. Still, Doughty will have many more chances over the next decade so take the bronze and be happy for now.

Hey Quisp- Looks like Chicago has taken a big step to address their cap issues. And all they lose if Buff, Eager and Sopel. Now that is a salary dump but I wouldn’t say they’ve damaged chances to compete next year.

@David, Well Lebrun seems to think Huet will end up in minors or abroad and give Chi $10 million of space. What they got from Atlanta is a pretty good return. Only real loss is Buff and while he was big in playoffs he’s kind of streaky sometimes too.

I took a look at Buffglein’s stats afterthe trade and I was surprised. He has never even hit 40 points in a season, I think his career high is 36 or something like that. His playoffs stats are better but still not amazing.
Maybe the Blackhawks do know what they are doing. I geuss they figured that his trade value is as high as it’s ever gonna get so they mind-as-well trade him for picks. Heads up move, Hawks!
I am pissed he didn’t get more votes but relieved because if he won his next contract would be even richer than it’s already going to be.

@Quisp, That is a good point. I wonder how much more value a Norris winner gets compared to a Norris nominee.
[Reply]
Stevens sounds solid.
[Reply]
If DD was on an east coast team, he would have been rated way higher. The problem is that most of the voting contingency is fast asleep when the west coast teams play, so they don’t get the same exposure. If you look at all the statistics and consider that the two other candidates were playing for two of the best teams in the NHL, DD’s accomplishments were far greater than the other two.

I absolutely love John Stevens. He’s a great choice.

@Kingsfanforlife, Who is everyone? Links to these sources saying he is unhappy? I’ve heard rumor about both and for obvious reasons, LA has the best cap situation for Kovy and Philly needs a goalie while dumping salary….I would be very surprised to see Quick or Bernier traded before they have at least a season to compete for the “Franchise Goalie” title.

@Kingsfanforlife,
Who is this everyone?
So, what, you personally got it from Kovi or his wife they’re gonna come to LA? And you’ve personally spoken to Quick about his unhappiness here?
You do know the dictionary definition of “RUMOR” is, don’t you?
Bob Bobson Reply:

@Kingsfanforlife, I echo the sentiments of DellaNooch and Kingsfanone. Rumors are easy to make up if you have a keyboard and an internet connection.
It is doubtful that DL trades away either goalie until Quick or Bernier has established himself as a #1 for at least at least two seasons. Dean had Kiprusoff push Nabakov for the #1 position in SJ for at least two seasons before he was sent to CAL.
What’s the difference between Jarret Stoll and Mike Green? Stoll plays better defense HEY OOOOOH

Sad to see Dewie be 3rd in line when Greens’ offense overwhelmed his moderate defense. Congratulations to Keith for a well deserved Norris win. I think this gives Dewie a taste of what it is like to be the man and he will go hardcore next year. I mean Keith and Green are 25-27 or so and Drew is 20. If he continues on his development and conditioning I can’t imagine how good Drew can be at 25-30.
What really inspires me is the fact that Kopitar got 4th in Lady Bing votes. Its funny that DL and TM want him to be a big bruiser and throw the body around then he gets consideration as the most gentlemanly player. A hat tip to Kopi for his efforts, hopefully he can build on that as well as the Hart next year.
Next year I believe the Kings have a shot at 3 awards, Bernier for the Calder, Kopitar for the Bing, Dewie for the Norris.

If you switched teams between Green with Doughty, the Kings don’t make the playoffs, and the Caps beat Montreal in the first round. Green’s awful defensive play in that series could not have been more clear, and Doughty was easily one of the best defenseman on any team in the first round.
I’m disappointed, but Keith is definitely deserving of the award. He had a terrific season. I just think Doughty’s more impressive because A) he’s so young and B) Keith is backed up by Brent Seabrook (a guy who should be considered for the Norris himself). Here’s hoping the writers pay more attention to Double-D now. I’ll take him over the other two any day.
