The NHL Awards will be handed out tonight in Las Vegas, with the Kings’ Drew Doughty as a finalist for the Norris Trophy, along with Chicago’s Duncan Keith and Washington’s Mike Green. I tend to think Keith will take home the award, but I also believe Doughty got more and more support as the season went along, particularly after the Olympics. Over at NHL.com, three pundits weighed in on who should take home the Norris.
In other categories, the Hart Trophy will go to Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby, Washington’s Alexander Ovechkin or Vancouver’s Henrik Sedin. The Vezina Trophy will go to New Jersey’s Martin Brodeur, Phoenix’s Ilya Bryzgalov or Buffalo’s Ryan Miller. The Calder Trophy will go to Colorado’s Matt Duchene, Detroit’s Jimmy Howard or Buffalo’s Tyler Myers. The Lady Byng will go to Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk, Dallas’ Brad Richards or Tampa Bay’s Martin St. Louis. The Selke Trophy will go to Datsyuk, Vancouver’s Ryan Kesler or Pittsburgh’s Jordan Staal. The Jack Adams will go to Colorado’s Joe Sacco, Phoenix’s Dave Tippett or Nashville’s Barry Trotz.
The awards show will be on Versus starting at 4:30 p.m. Pacific.
Let’s go doughnut’s!

While I’m rooting for DD to get the Norris I do think DK deserves it, might be his last chance after all.
I crack up every time the mention nominees for the Jack adams or Vezina, as if Tippet and Miller aren’t walking away with those awards.

Good luck DD you deserve it!
It’s a shame that TM isn’t a candidate for coach of the year and Zeus not being a finalist for Selke trophy…
All of them deserve consideration.

What about the Foundation award?

I can’t wait for tonight. I’m from Buffalo so I’m rooting for Miller and Myers. I hope Doughty takes home the Norris, he deserves it but Keith will probably win it eventhough Doughty is better than him. Keith will win it because he lost all those teeth and won the cup, too bad. But what do I know I’m only 14, who knows whats gonna happen? It’s gonna be interesting!

@King fan in Buffalo, well i’m sure we’re all hoping DD wins it. Thankfully the fact that Keith won a cup has no bearing on the decision at all since the voting was done well before the playoffs were over, and is only based on regular season performance.

@King fan in Buffalo,
voting for the Trophies was Prior to the Play-offs; loss of teeth, playoff performance will have ZERO impact on the winner.

Rich — Just curious, are you still a part of the PHWA?

Drewbie … cmon baby!
ON ANOTHER NOTE
read this on another blog and thought this was interesting:
“Is Ilay at $8M plus really worth more to a team that two $4M players?”
What 2 guys @ 4 million do you suppose would take us to the next level?
I’m genuinely curious as to what everyone thinks.

@Matt George, I think Patrick Sharp at 3.5ish right now and Martin St.Louis at 5.5 ish can even it out to make it 8 total. Those two I believe would each be 25 plus goal scorers and more importantly add the SPEED our Kings have never had and WILL need to make it to the cup.

@USCG,
USCG…. what ever made you think we need speed? No idea where you got that idea (I’m just being tongue in cheek as I’ve been banging on about it for the last 6 months)

@number 6, lol I was actually about to FLIP when I read your first sentence. Good thing we agree on the same thing. Let’s face it the Kings just seem soooo slow against every single opponent. We really need to bring in the speed
And it’s been slow for a good 5 or 6 seasons if not more.

@number 6,
i’m patting myself on the back, but i wrote this in October that our team speed is NHL average. Chic, Van, SJ, Phoenix(why we have such problems with them) are at different levels of team speed over us. i think that will get a bump-up this season with players in our organization, or UFA.
Hopefully DD wins it but don’t forget we have Brownie up for a very meaningful award,the NHL Foundation award(charitable contribution).At least I hope he gets that for his playgruonds for kids charity.

It will be an outrage if Green wins the award this season. Doughty and Keith are both deserving and I can live with either of them winning. Despite what Boudreau says, stats can sometimes be misleading.
Randy Jones had more than twice the amount of points than Matt Greene had this year. Does that make him a better player? I don’t think anyone on this site will make that argument. (I’m not a big Jones hater, but I certainly was gripping the arm chair hard in anxiety every time I saw him on the ice.) It would be just as preposterous to vote Stamkos in as a candidate for the Hart trophy in place of Ovechkin just because Stamkos scored more goals.
Doughty and Keith both meant more to their teams’ defense and overall play than Green. My challenge to the writers who vote would be to look beyond the stat sheet and keep an eye on the overall value of the player to his team’s success.
The bottom line is that Green had a great year for his team, but I would vote him a distant 3rd. (and probably 5th for that matter behind Lidstrom and Pronger who I feel were both more deserving to be at the awards ceremony than Green).

@ Joel.
I don’t think it is a big secret that Green is average at best in his own zone. But he is as valuable to the Caps as Keith or Doughty are to the Hawks and Kings respectively. I’ll agree that DK and DD are more deserving. Getting the chance to see all of these guys (DD the most obviously) They are all unique defencemen, with tremendous ability. Green’s strength is on the breakouts/forecheck, and the O-zone/PP unit. And he does it better than most D in the league. Keith and DD have more complete games and are effective in both ends, particularly in the O zone with their abilities to quarterback a power play.
I think these three guys are going to battle eachother for the Norris for many years to come.
HERE WE GO DOUGHTY !!!!
[Reply]
While Doughty is probably the best player of the three and certainly the best Kings D man ever, I rather hope he doesn’t win the award this year….as the Olympic Final game showed, he still has a lot to learn, and if he wins the award, the perception will suddenly be” that’s a horrible play for a Norris Trophy winner” rather than ” he’s only 20 years old, still has a lot to learn”….Let Keith win it, it’s a Hawks year; by next year, Keith may not even make the final 3, and Doughty has many more Norris Trophies in his future…..

Dustin Byfuglien, one of the breakout players for the Stanley Cup-winning Blackhawks last season, is in the process of being traded to the Thrashers, pending a trade call. Byfuglien, along with Brent Sopel, Ben Eager and Akim Aliu, will be headed to Atlanta in exchange for the 24th overall pick at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, the 54th pick, Marty Reasoner and Jeremy Morin.

@Buster,
No he wasn’t try to be non-biased for am minute and you’ll see Keith truly deserved it this year. He had more points more ice time and more takeaways Drew will have many more opportunitys and norris’s before he’s done.

Finally home from an eventful day. Red carpet was great! Was surprised to see so many of our Kings there. Got DD and Simmonds to sign my playoff towel. Luc was being rushed in so no go on that one. Security bitched at me for trying to take JR’s pic (probably told them to keep us Kings fans away lol). Gave the comish the finger. Yep fun day! Thanks to all the players for stopping for us (wish the ginger twin didn’t but hay). All in all a great day!
