Kings’ schedule released

The Kings’ 2010-11 schedule has been released. As expected, the season will start with back-to-back road games against Vancouver (Oct. 9) and Calgary (Oct. 10) and the home opener will be Oct. 12 against Atlanta.

The Kings will host Eastern Conference teams Atlanta, Carolina (Oct. 20), New Jersey (Oct. 30), Tampa Bay (Nov. 4), N.Y. Islanders (Nov. 13), Florida (Dec. 2), Philadelphia (Dec. 30), Toronto (Jan. 10) and Boston (Jan. 24).

The Kings’ Eastern Conference road games will be at Buffalo (Nov. 19), Boston (Nov. 20), Ottawa (Nov. 22), Montreal (Nov. 24), Pittsburgh (Feb. 10), Washington (Feb. 12), Philadelphia (Feb. 13), N.Y. Rangers (Feb. 17) and N.Y. Islanders (Feb. 19).

The Kings play 10 consecutive road games from Feb. 1 to Feb. 23, although the last of those games is in Anaheim and, given the break between the Feb. 5 game at Calgary and the Feb. 10 game at Pittsburgh, it’s reasonable to assume the Kings will be able to spend at least two days at home in the middle of that trip. That’s sort of an odd road trip. The longest homestand is an eight-game stretch from Dec. 30 to Jan. 15.

October has four home games and seven road games. November has six home games and six road games. December has seven home games and seven road games. January has 10 home games and three road games. February has three home games and 10 road games. March has eight home games and six road games. April has three home games and two road games. That’s a pretty fair split, although the Kings will want to be in good shape heading into that tough February stretch, which also includes four sets of back-to-back games.

The complete schedule follows below…

    The schedule should be as follows:
    Each team in the west/east should play each team in the east/west twice, once home and once away.
    =30 games
    Each team should then play the other 14 teams in their conference 4 times, twice home and twice away. =56
    Total = 86
    This solves all parity issues in the schedule.

    Eliminate 2 preseason games and we are only increasing the season by 2 games.

    KOHO Reply:

    @Dominick,

    Really?! This isn’t the 1940s anymore. Players are pampered with chartered flights and top hotels. The point of getting to play everyone atleast twice is about the league marketing itself through the players. It’s about seeing Ovechkin and Crosby every year in your building.

    Would the NBA have faired as well had they not had Magic, Bird, Jordan, etc. only play in their conference and maybe have them travel once every three years?

    There is too much talent in this league and we’re not getting the real NHL experience when we don’t get to see these guys play in each arena.

    Not bad … all things considered.

    - A nice, evenly spaced ramp-up to the long Dec/Jan “Homestand”,
    - followed by the long Feb “Road Stretch”,
    - followed by another “Home-favored” March (to maybe reverse any damage done in Feb, and to gear up for the final playoff push)
    - April … bring it!

    DougS Reply:

    @jammer06,
    A concern, maybe, but I don’t think it should be a worry. Kings were a pretty decent road team last year. There’s also a school of thought that with a younger team, long road trips give them a chance to bond, and there are actually fewer distractions than at home.

    @DougS,
    For some reason the last three years this team has had a funk coming out of the break. Last year if it weren’t for their 9 game streak right before the olympic break it would have been a far diffferent end of the season. Maybe the road trip makes it easier, but its still the key time of the season for positioning.

    OFF TOPIC but…

    Any reason why we couldn’t trade for the rights to Bobby Ryan in Anaheim, let Fro go to FA and give him Fro’s money? Talk about an offensive boost on LW! 23 years old, 25-30 goals now, imagine when he’s fully grown! Money’s right. Anaheim needs defensemen and prospects. Picks too.

    You know Brian Burke wants Bobby Ryan in Toronto and the gab is something involving Kaberle & Ryan, which quite frankly I can’t see given the crappy contracts the Ducks already have (Jason Blake $4mil/ Lubo $5.6mil/ Lupul $4.25mil) Adding Kaberle to that mess, even with Neids gone (Maybe even Selanne) is more money down the hole. We could give the Ducks some rebuilding tools for Ryan.

    Thoughts?

    Cynic Reply:

    @bob,

    I thought it was crazy too, but Anaheim and Ryan were very far apart in their negotiations last year for an extension. This year, talks are still an issue, even though they have started again. Ducks would lost in arbitration (I believe bigtime, but that’s only my opinion).

    Now obviously I’m not privvy to the inside talk, but if Bobby doesn’t want to be in Anaheim, seeing how the team is starting to look (One line does not make a team). Neids retiring, Teemu probably gone now as well, prospects are thin, He may ask for a trade. Stranger things have happened.

    The possibility is there I think. If I’m the Ducks GM, I’m looking at my D-corps with Neids gone and crying. I’ll have to face Ryan, Getzlaf & Perry and tell them help is on the way. Getz & Perry are locked in for 3 years each. Ryan is not. The Kings are one offensive talent away from being a real contender. Bobby Ryan could be a part of that. If he goes to arbitration, I could get stung, even for a few years, which might limit my abilities to lock up a d-man. Do I want one of the best 1st lines in hockey with no defense? Or do I play it safe and use Bobby Ryan’s $$$ to shore up my defense and prospects?

    I think the Ducks GM has a bit of a major dilemma on his hands. Giving Neids’s money to Ryan would put his D- in a big hole. Go look at the Duck’s d- lineup on their website and take out Neidermayer. Not much to look at. A bunch of 5-6ers less Lubo & potentially Sbisa on the prospect front. Unless he can shed Blake & Lupul, he’s got himself a problem.

    Could be wrong, have been before, but it’s just speculation looking at the Ducks’s situation.

    @Cynic,

    Your points are all mute. Here is an interveiew with Bobby Ryan today stating that while they still aren’t close to an agreement yet, he wants to stay in Anaheim and isn’t looking for Getzlaf/Perry money. He says he would be very suprised if he isn’t signed by July 1st by the Ducks.

    David Reply:

    @Cynic, If the Kings were in the Eastern conference, then you may have a good point. But no way in hell do the Ducks trade Ryan to another pacific division team, let alone another Western Conference team.

    Cynic Reply:

    @bob,
    Let’s look at this from another angle:

    Let’s say we poach him Edmonton/Dustin Penner style. Here’s the range of cost according to the CBA we are looking at:

    Over $2,836,589
    THREE FIRST ROUNDS

    EACH ADDITIONAL $1,668,582
    ADDITIONAL FIRST ROUND, UP TO MAXIMUM OF FIVE FIRST ROUND
    PICKS

    Now, could we sign Bobby Ryan for less than $4,505,171 per year? I think so.

    Would you give up 3 first round picks for Bobby Ryan? HELL YES! Given how we are stacked with picks & prospects and how I expect those first round picks to be pretty low the next few years, especially with Ryan in our top 6.

    Now if I’m the Ducks GM, knowing this, What would I rather have happen:

    #1- The CBA dictate my compensation for the loss of Bobby Ryan?

    OR

    #2- I can pick and choose even BETTER compensation to shore my team up for the future by trading his rights away.

    Toronto is not in a position to trade anything since they already did that for Kessel. The Kings, on the other hand, are in a position to help the Ducks and still be deep. We hold a LOT of ‘Cards’. Yes, it’s in the division, but who’s a better trading partner with the depth that we have that needs & can AFFORD a Bobby Ryan?

    I’m tellin’ ya….I hope DL explores this option. I think it’s better than Kovalchuk, Marleau, Hossa or anyone else with much more upside value for less cost.

    Cynic Reply:

    @TANTRUM-

    Disagree. If anything, it kind of makes me think it is more possible. What player is going to come out and say publicly that he wants to force management’s hand? Or that he doesn’t want to resign with his team? READ BETWEEN the lines. Did you catch this little tidbit?:
    ” If I were traded, I know there’s places I’d like to go and places I wouldn’t like to go.”

    BR is acknowledging it’s possible. His comment about another Toronto article making him ‘Lose it’ pretty much tells me Toronto is a place he would NOT like to go, although he would never say that directly.

    How about this one:
    “There hasn’t been anything that’s gone in the right direction. But there’s no hostility”

    No hostility is good, but business is business. NOTHING HAS GONE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION? NOTHING? That’s a bold statement after over a year of negotiations.

    Now he says he wants to get it closed oout beforehand. Of course he does. He likes Anaheim, has lots of friends there, I’m sure he likes playing with Perry and Getz. Now what if he was traded to a place where he didn’t have to sell his house or change his lifestyle? He could still be close to his friends, even though he couldn’t play on the same team anymore. He gets the money he wants with a pretty seamless transition, not having to uproot his life and goes to a contender with lots of youth, depth & potential, where he is the missing piece that could make them great for a long time.

    I’ve given the GM’s perspective. I’ve given the player’s perspective. We would ALL love this to happen. This exercise is to show the possibilities. There are lots here.

    Montreal traded the goalie who got them deep into the playoffs literally a week after the Cup was won. Who would have thought THAT was going to happen? If Halak can be traded to St Louis after that performance, Bobby Ryan can become a King.

    David Reply:

    @Cynic, Again, Halak wasnt traded to the Bruins. He was traded all the way to the western conference to the blues.

    Dominick Reply:

    @Cynic, I agree with your scenario.Not that it will happen,but it is a possibility that’s worth exploring.I’ve actually been hoping for that exact scenario November.

If Bernier pans out to be the true nr. 1 and Quick 1A, then we lose that trade in my opinion. I believe Carter can be had for our first rounder and a prospect or low salary roster body. PHI must dump salary and need a goalie that is cup/playoff ready.

    They went after Hamhuis and will sign Coburn-shoring up the Defense. Now they need to dump salary and pick up an experienced net minder (Ellis) IMHO. Carter is the only one without NTC. They will not bank 2010-11 only a non proven NHL goalie (Bernier).

    oldthunder Reply:

    @src, you never know… Phi bet the farm on trading for an aging pronger which we all said they overpaid for, but you can’t argue with the results this year. Phi does have a history of weird trades and they ran 4 goalies into the ground last year and still made the finals. I wouldn’t count them out from doing it, but it makes little sense for us to trade Bernier for 1 year of Carter especially if we have yet to see Bernier for a full year first. I would honestly think DL would trade Quick with his value at a high rather than the home grown Bernier.

    Mid year one of the two will be gone, but not for Carter in this offseason.

    [Reply]

    src Reply:

    @oldthunder,

    Yup,

    Quick would make more sense wrt cap hit and experience, but if Bernier regresses or hits a rough patch with have only Ersberg to step in. Not talking down Ersberg, but he is not a nr. 1. Carter has arbitration rights after next year. If he hits 30+ goals again, then ouch! Dont see us trading a goalie. The best senario is Bernier and Quick battle it out and both do well. Quicks trade value will rise because of the low cap hit.

    Another point is that Schenn will be ready for the 2nd line duties at center in 2011-12. So, I believe, DL and co are looking at 2012-13 as our cup run year. Zues will be off the books and Stoll in his last year as the 3rd center (where he belongs).
