Development camp, etc.

The Kings’ developmental camp, always a highlight of the summer, is scheduled for a June 30 start. That’s a Wednesday, and it’s also a couple weeks earlier than usual. In the next couple days, I should have a complete schedule and hopefully the names of participants (which usually includes most of the team’s recently-made draft picks). As usual, it will be held at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo.

Also, congrats to Cammi Granato, who was selected for the Hockey Hall of Fame today. Granato has ties with the Kings, as she was the team’s radio color commentator for the 1998-99 season. She’s also the wife of former Kings forward Ray Ferraro and the sister of former Kings forward Tony Granato.

This is a bad month to be out of State; missing the draft and now the development camp. Hopefully the people who attend the camp put the word out about who looks good.

Among other prospects, I’m really pulling for Hickey and Kozun to make good impressions. It would be great if both of those guys are still around for Frozen Fury making a case for their inclusion on the roster.

@Joel, I feel for you I was out of town for the last 3 days and I feel I am way out of the loop. I am just going back now to read up on Rich’s and his Peeps Great Blogs.

Is Niedermayer ready to be an assistant coach ? I’m just asking

    luc20rules Reply:

@dr. glancy, I was thinking if we could steal Selanne & Niedermayer with 1 year contracts, that would put the pressure off DL as far as being under the cap for extentions to the young core while improving the team for the future with player/teachers and bumping us to the elite level towards winning the cup. Although that is likely a pipe dream as Niedermayer will probably go to NJ to join his brother and guarantee jersey retirement there.

First off, Congrats to Cammi! You deserve it!

Ok, Now off topic. A word of warning to those planning on attending the red carpet at the awards. I was there last year and just feel I should pass this on. The indoor part of the red carpet is on the casino floor. I saw NHL media’s kids kicked out last year, so the only option for those who are, or who are with those under 21 is the out door part (still red carpet, but you get to see the players and stars get out of the limo after driving from the other side of the parking lot). Just remember our high is going to be in the 100′s so please be prepared.

Again, that was based on last year. Don’t know if rules changed, but I doubt it.

For any who haven’t been to a development camp yet you should really try to get down there. When the play the scrimmage games it’s really fun. It’s just a few hours each day so if you can get there for one of the days it’s a must do for any Kings fan.

We all think its going to be the Quick – Bernier show next season.

Do the Kings move one of these guys (Quick) for a top 6 forward and than sign a veteran goalie, i.e. Nabokov, Mason, ??? to show Bernier the ropes? I’m not impressed with Nabokov but maybe a new environment and a chip on his shoulder gives us one or two great seasons…this guy is still in his prime!

I’m also thinking we get the maximum value for Quick now after last seasons performance vs taking a chance he stinks up the place this season and we get nothing. By all accounts Bernier is the CHOSEN ONE!

    USCG Reply:

@Barry’s Mullet, I brought this up on the last page, pretty much exactly what you said, I got crucified for it. Good luck to you. But I agree, while Quick’s value is high, we SHOULD trade him NOW and pick someone else to split time with Bernier. I have a feeling Quick isn’t going to have much more stellar in him, and when we HAVE to trade one of these guys next year, we probably won’t be getting more than a second round pick.

    USCG Reply:

@USCG, here’s the re post from the last thread..Some of the people above me were talking about wether Quick or Bernier should be traded for some fire power right now seeing that their trade value is so high…I think IF that were to happen, and that’s a BIG if, what made the time even riper for us right now is that the Sharks just announced that they are not offering Nabakov a contract. In a perfect world, I would trade Quick, Start Nabakov with Bernier Back up and get a big name for Quick. That’s ONLY if we were going to trade a goalie right now, which I doubt.

    [Reply]

    David Reply:

@USCG, You would rather get Nabby than Kovy or Marleau?

And we dont have to trade either Goaltender until Quick’s contract is up in 2013-2014 season. He has a low cap hit of 1.8 and there is no reason to trade him now. Might as well keep him and Bernier as a great 2 goalie tandem for the next couple of seasons.

    USCG Reply:

@USCG, No, I don’t want to have Nabby more than kovy or marleau, like i said a few times this post is ONLY if the Kings WANT to pull a bone headed move and trade one of these guys. Regardless, I doubt were getting Marleau or Kovy anyway.

    Dan H. Reply:

    @USCG,

Trading Quick would be dumb. Quick is proven, Bernier is not. I hope they’re both studs but IF Bernier isn’t all that and they lose Quick, then we’re back in typical Kings…whos my goalie? syndrome.

    Wait until you’re sure.
