According to this story on NHL.com, the Kings will open their season with a set of back-to-back road games against Vancouver and Calgary. The Kings will play the Canucks on Saturday, Oct. 9, then play the Flames on Sunday, Oct. 10. The Kings’ home opener will be Tuesday, Oct. 12, against Atlanta.
A note on the first game. Plans have been in place, for a while, for the Kings and Canucks to play the season opener against each other. This will be the 40th anniversary of the Canucks’ inclusion into the NHL, and the Canucks’ first regular-season NHL game was against the Kings, on Oct. 9, 1970. The Kings won 3-1. In this year’s season opener, the Kings are planning to wear “vintage” uniforms, similar to the ones they wore in that 1970 game. If you click this link, the jerseys look very similar to the first purple jersey shown (No. 29). I’m not aware of exactly how many times the Kings will wear those jerseys next season. I’ve heard it might be three or four times.
That jersey is sweet. LA should make that jersey a part of their normal season rotation.

@Matt George,
Just my opinion:
These and the Chevron Jerseys were the best the Kings have fielded to date. I love the old Forum Gold. When they added the strips down the arms the look was ruined.
The Current White Jerseys aren’t too bad.
The current Dark Jerseys are terrible. Ugly, Ugly, Ugly
The Black Alternate Jerseys are among the worse in the NHL. Pain, ugly, and totally without class. I can’t see how anyone could like those except a goth or some banger wannabe.
“Dress in Black” What a ridiculous representation for our team and city.
With the current Dark and Alternate Jerseys we have little room to mock the old Vancouver Jerseys.

The Kings should bring back the “Sinister King” logo of the 95-96 era.
That face, in place of the home plate of the current alternate would have been much, much cooler – in my humble opinion, of course.

@David, It is a very important question, since FSN did not show any Kings regular season games played in Canada. The only reason given was “FSN is committed to provide the best possible broadcast and Canadian Arena’s are not currently set up for HD broadcasts.”

@54FIGHTING, I like the “home plate” a lot more than the current purple/white jersey. That jersey is just plain ugly. Add in the fact that’s it’s extremely feminine, and you have yourself one ugly piece of clothing.
The original crown logo is awesome.
I really miss the Kings original jerseys. I never did understand why everybody thought they were so ghastly on a hockey team but not on a basketball team. It should have been the Lakers who changed their team colors, to say, blue and green which fits their name a bit more. Purple and Gold are more regal colors and fit the King name better. I never could get into the Gretzky era jerseys, the design was ok, but I hated those Raider colors!
Can’t wait till October.

@Jack the Lad, Got to disagree here, I think the Gretzky era jerseys were the best we ever had, so what if they looked like the Raiders….at the same time, I’d love the Kings to bring back the Purple and Gold for a few games EVERY year, it’s part of who the Kings are.

@DellaNooch, I agree. Also next time I get Drew Doughty’s autograph I am going to suggest he push that idea on Luc Robitaille since Doughty grew up with the original silver and black jersey”s, I think he would love to wear them a couple times a year. Also, the white and siver are great as well !

@DellaNooch,
My objection to the silver-black jerseys is not that they are Raiders colors, so much as the fact that they were adopted in imitation of another team. The fact that it was the Raiders being imitated is just incidental to me.
By contrast, the purple-gold jerseys made the Kings distinctive. You saw that color scheme, and it just couldn’t be anybody else. I know a lot of people thought it was ugly. But it gave the team a unique identity. And I think that the organization should be proud of that.
I look forward to the day when the Kings can wear those colors on the ice and say, “You think these colors are ugly? Screw you; we’re gonna beat your ass, and that’s the only thing that matters.”

@DougS,
I agree. Ugly, was relative in that era.
Compared to Montreal, Philly, NYI, NYC and Tronato perhaps.
Compared to what Atlanta, Vancouver, Kansas, San Francisco and Colorado offered they were pretty nice.
Today’s Dark Jerseys and the especially heinous Alternate Jerseys are fashion abominations.
The “Dress in Black” is a call to what? The underclass? Who the h*** celebrates in Black?
I would love to see Forum Gold, just not the later edition with the contrasting strips down the arms.

@Jack the Lad,
You are absolutely right. Forum blue (or purple) is the color of royalty (look it up) and is why it is the color the Kings should be wearing at all times.
One of the main reasons the Kings wear black and white is because those are the colors Luc wore when he played junior hockey and it brings back memories for him and he thinks it looks good. Sorry Luc, you are wrong on this one.
The throw back uniforms with the forum blue, and the single stripe on the sleve, at the bottom of the jersey and sock are clean and unique.
I don’t understand why so many teams think black is a color (or rather lack of color) that must be used. Loved it when the Flyeres went back to their original orange as did most of their fans. I bet these throw backs are going to sell. I know my family will be getting them for Christmas.

@Matt R, his production is not declining at all, he had 3 strait 30 goal seasons and the only reason he had low 20′s last season was cuz he missed 24 games. He’s 27 and in his prime and centering a second line with Brown and Smyth would be a deadly freaking line. Regardless, I doubt that we are getting ANY big names to the Kings since we never do, so i won’t be holding my breath for ANY of these big free agents.

I don’t see the point of getting Spezza. A) Is he a winner? Not based on history. B) Expensive contract for a 2nd line center and B2) that slot will soon be filled I’d think for sure in 2011-12 season by one Brayden Schenn.
That’s my thoughts anyway.

@Ed,
I work in commercial post. red/purple can look different on just about any tv set. its a hard color to have consistency with. In NTSC it was horrible. HD was supposed to fix some of that but seems like its still off a lot of the time. Also depends on how the signal is processed at the game. I notice it too, i thought my jersey was fading the last time I wore it. Fox sports should dial that in better.

Another off-topic news item: Mike Modano might not be re-signed by the Stars. Anyone else think that if he comes at a good price, he might be worth a one-year deal? He can still skate as well as most players, and he’s pretty responsible defensively. The only question would be where he would play in this lineup. Maybe he could play on the wing.
What do you think?

No, he has not announced his retirement. He’s still making up his mind, but according to ESPN.com, he already knows that he won’t be in the Stars’ plans this season. I think he can still play, and could add veteran leadership (as well as Stanley Cup experience), but probably not at the level he wants to. If I were him, I’d retire, but if he wants to play a reduced role for a lot less money, I think it might be worth considering. He’d be an upgrade over Jeff Halpern, anyway.

As long as the casucks are going to wear those hideous V sweaters and we are wearing the road purple I wont feel so bad for the guys. Kings original yellow and purple jerseys were way better than the 80′s yellow and purple. Our current jerseys are awesome. Glad we went back to the crown. I hated the shield, sux. The crown is the teams logo and a killer logo it is. Would be cool to do a throwback crown like the original but put it on the current jersey.

@PRMan, You sir at least have some common sense. I am 46 and I have lived thru all of the colors since 73 and I wouldnt mind seeing the differnt uniforms they have some of the time but not every game. I have problems with people my age who keep shoving Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath down my throat at all these sporting events. My response to these losers is this..stop living in the past and get over yourself, wether you like it or not you are getting older and like everyone else will eventually die so deal with it ! If you really need to hear these bands then go home and put some headphones on and smoke a joint and leave us the hell alone ! I have already lived thru these bands and old Kings colors and I dont need to relive it. What alot of people my age fail to realize is that kids who hear you whining about the past think you are a big time loser, and why not ! when I was a kid and heard older people putting down the music and uniforms of the day I also thought they were just a bunch of old Rummy’s and big time losers as well !
