Draft (and other) activities

The NHL Draft is rapidly approaching, and some have asked about the “prospects clinic” that is taking place on June 24 in El Segundo. I have some information on that. Basically, it’s a clinic for local youth hockey players (they’ve already been selected), which will be run by Willie O’Ree, Daryl Evans, Jim Fox and six highly regarded draft prospects (Tyler Seguin, Taylor Hall, Brett Connolly, Erik Gudbranson, Cam Fowler and Long Beach native Emerson Etem. All of the prospects will be on the ice working with the kids, and the program runs from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. It’s free to watch, at Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo.

Also on June 24, the NHL Coaches’ Association will hold an all-day coaching clinic at the Sheraton Los Angeles Downtown hotel. Scheduled to participate are Stanley Cup winning coach Joel Quenneville, Kings coaches Jamie Kompon and Bill Ranford, plus Dan Bylsma, Tony Granato, Kirk Muller, Wayne Fleming, Paul MacLean, Perry Pearn, Brad Shaw and Barry Smith. The clinic costs $150 and more info can be found by clicking here.

Finally… don’t forget that the annual Jim Fox/Dave Taylor charity golf tournament, benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, will take place this coming Monday at the Moorpark Country Club. Read more about that by clicking here. And Daryl Evans has a series of on-ice hockey clinics in July in El Segundo. More information here.

    Who would pay 150 to listen to Kompon?

    @John, His salary is waayyy higher than that, so Kings management would pay ALOT more to listen to Kompon, that’s who. Seems to me that trying to learn from an NHL calibre coach is a good idea.

    @VanKingsFan,
    Rudy Kelly of the Battle for California blog had what I think is the ultimate retort for all the Kompon-bashers: “It’s like they don’t realize that the Kings have a system that puts the puck on the sticks of their two best players (Doughty & Kopitar).”

    Indeed.

    The Kompon-bashers really don’t know what they’re talking about. They’re just trying to find somebody to blame so they’ll look smart. But it just makes them look like they’re flailing.

    @DougS, Well, he only had the youngest team in the league in the top 20% on the power play.

    @John, Right, don’t focus on the 10 other coaches(including the guy who just won the cup), just focus on the 1 guy you don’t like. In a dictionary somewhere, this is the definition of Negative.

    @wavesinair, It seems as though nobody remembers the Kings 5-4 PP was really good and it almost single handedly won the series with Vancouver. I think some fans are just overly focused on the 23 or so 5 on 3 PP that were not scored at a high rate. The truth is those aren’t automatic around the league 33% seems about right, yes we were below that, but I am sure we scored at a higher percentage over all if you combine the 5-4s & 5-3s. I also agree that Kompon has done a good job bringing the prospects along.

    Kompon was in charge of bringing along the young guys the last few years. Can someone tell me he didnt do a good job with that?
    Kompon might be a head coach one day. None of the Kompon critics who post here will.

    Does anyone know when the Kings Development Camp is this summer?

    I’ve attended the last 3 years, and it’s usually scheduled mid to late July..

    For those who haven’t gone. It’s a GREAT place to watch the Kings prospects, up close and personal. It’s free. And, this Camp should be the best in years.
