Frolov in Scotland

No, Alexander Frolov hasn’t signed to play in Scotland, but he made the newspaper there. Readers Rebecca and Jim passed this along. They’re enjoying some time in Scotland and were surprised to open the local paper and see a shot of Frolov playing for Russia in the IIHF World Championships. If you read the caption, it seems as though “Alexander” has achieved one-name status in Scotland, similar to Madonna and Oprah…

    Dang, I was really wishing that Frolov decided to sign with a team in Scotland. He could have an entirely new fanbase to frustrate.

    And that is my negative Frolov comment for the day. Back to work.

    This is dumb. It was probably just a mistake that the writer forgot to put his last name. Besides does Scotland even have a major Hockey league? You’d think that if anything he’d go to the KHL not freakin’ Scotland! Anyway, thanks alot Rich.

    “Besides does Scotland even have a major Hockey league?”

    The UK does, where I think only 1 of its 9 teams is from Scotland. It’s the best league in the country. Most players are imports from the US and Canada.

    “When compared to North American leagues, the caliber of play is probably equivalent to that of the teams in the ECHL.”

    If you lack the ability to pick up on sarcasm or humor at all, I’d suggest you find a new source for Kings information.

    I doubt that Rich actually thinks that Fro has reached single name status in Scotland.

    Getting news about a Los Angeles player playing in Germany from a newspaper in Scotland…that’s a new one for me!

    @Matt R,

    Speaking of Orr, has anyone else seen the new statue in Boston? Removing the net, goalie and other players was a bad choice. It appears that an 800 lb Bobby Orr doing his best superman impression is attempting to tackle/mug passerbys.

    RLane420 Reply:

    @holly, If you dont recognize the statue you probably arent a hockey fan anyway, so it doesnt matter.

    Dominick Reply:

    @holly, I thought that was funny.

    @RLane420 Pretty harsh assesment of someone who has been relatively informative all season long.

    Looks like he’s having fun! I think he his so completely misunderstood by fans and coaches because of his taciturn nature and that Eastern European emotional control that Americans just don’t get – we seem to want our athleets to be emtotionally demonstrative, but that’s just not our “Fro.”

    I dearly hope he is re-signed by the Kings. If he isn’t, watch him get a hat trick or something against the Kings next season. If it happens, it will be the only time I cheer happily for an oppostion player.

    Ahhh yes….

    Awesome shot of Alexander Orr right there. More importantly though, you all know who #21 for Slovakia is in that picture don’t you?

    That’s right…..

    Wait for it…….

    MAREK ZAGRAPAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I was hoping it was Juraj Mikus as that picture would have become instantly LEGENDARY!

    Here’s their roster: http://www.hokej.sk/?roster=SVK

    Juraj played in 2009 at the worlds, but not this year I guess. He certainly must be out there saving the world then, one BAR exam at a time.

    @Cynic, Either that or he is raiding the buffet table with Hickey in the press box at the Monarchs games

    holly Reply:

    @VanKingsFan,
    To my knowledge, Juraj isn’t even in the states right now.

    The one we really had to watch was Brett Westgarth. Somehow on at least one occasion he watched the games from the Monarchs suite dressed in sweats and drinking beer all night.

    Yes, Frolov is known simply as Alexander. There are two other players on the Russian team named Alexander that are forced to use their entire name since they cant touch our Alexander…. oh yeah, those other two Alexanders? One guys name is Ovechkin and the other is Semin. LOL

    I used to be keen on Alex, once the star bum on a team of bums. but that feeling has turned luke warm.

    A 20 goal scorer is nothing to turn your nose at unless you expect him to be a 30 goal scorer.

    So how about adjusting the target? Call him a defensive forward who can be dangerous and use him as such? I think he can do well in this roll…

    If only he’d hit somebody!

    [Reply]

    USHA#17 Reply:

    What I don’t get is why he doesn’t use his size. I though all Russians were tough guys who run around bopping people on the head.

    Hollywood does not get these things wrong.

    I don’t believe Alex is Russian. I think he’s French. Has anyone seen his birth certificate? I demand to see it. He had got to be French, look at how he plays! This alone makes him worth only a $3.1M cap hit!

    This is a great picture, but what I REALLY want is a print of when he threw that punch in the playoffs!! I have been waiting and hoping for years to see Fro to get mad on the ice, just once – I really felt his game would change for the better if he hit that level of intensity. This year we have seen some changes that seem to have stuck – checks, confrontations, and finally – a pretty nice punch in defense of a teammate. I actually hope now we keep him at least one more year, but that probably won’t happen.

    [Reply]

    hockeyjockey Reply:

    @pucktime,
    I saw that too since he is my guy and I really
    zone in on him when he is on the ice.. I wish that
    Foxie had made mention of it.. I think/know he is
    a great ‘team’ player who will go to bat for his
    teammates and he does has grown this year and I think Captiain Brown and Coach Kompton have been a big factor in this.
    By the way who was the guy he went after?
    And since you sound like a Fro fan did you see
    him with Ryan Whitney when we played Edmonton in April? He was checking him into backboards all night.. did not like that guy :)
