Smyth hurt, Canada wins

Canada beat Latvia 6-1 in a pool-play game today at the IIHF World Championships, but Kings winger Ryan Smyth, Canada’s captain, is finished for the tournament with a broken ankle that he suffered in practice. Smyth told Canadian reporters that an MRI revealed a fracture. Smyth told reporters, “We’ve got the whole summer to heal. I’ll be itching and ready to go when September rolls around.” For more on the game, click here.

    He needs to stop playing and rest up for the coming year. Smyth was totally out of gas (or else just playing really poorly) at end of the year and in the playoffs. I know he gets lots of attention and kudos for all his Captain Canada stuff, but I am much more interested in what he can do for the Kings next year.

    @rick, I read he’ll be out 4-6 weeks. Plenty of time to rest and heal before camp. Bummed for him that he will miss the rest of this after not making the Olympic team. Heal fast! We need you ready in about 4 months (training camp is September right? Math has been eluding me a bit lately. lol)

    Now if only U.S.A. could play better and win the next game? (I know, nothing to do with Smyth but I thought I’d throw it in there)

    We should all be glad Smyth just fracture his ankle, I had a nasty ankle sprain 4 years ago and remember the doctors telling me how much better off I would have been with a fractured or broke ankle. To this day it still hurts.

    Hopefully he recovers quickly and he is back in force!

    @Seattle757,

    Well, that explains my f’ed up ankle. At my physical couple of years back, the doctor noted my ‘deformed’ ankle and shook her head – ‘boys will be boys’ – couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve sprained that ankle over the years – looks like a small grapefruit. Still works albeit in a limited way and no pain – must have some luck on my side.

    I inflamed my bursa sac near my Achilles tendon a couple of years ago. I was in a walking boot for 2 months, and it is still swollen to this day.

    Hopefully the rehab will actually make him focus on his fitness this summer a little more than other summers, and he’ll be even better for it next year.

    I am still scared to death of his contract in year 3…

    @KingFanMGM,

    Smyth’s Cap Hit is $6.25M. But, the Kings out-of-pocket payment to him in 2011-12 is only $4.5M. He may just be bought out summer of 2011. It’s up to Ryan, and, of course, his health. Wish him all the best.

    @Winsomemore,
    Can you elaborate on this?

    [Reply]

    Winsomemore Reply:

    @josh e.,

    Looking at 2011-12, Smyth’s huge Cap Hit looks to be a major stumbling block with respect to acquiring top end talent. If he’s bought out the Cap Hit drops significantly, can’t recall exactly how much, enabling DL to spend the money on an acquisition that is actually worth a $6.25M, or thereabouts, Cap Hit.

    Now, Smyth may just prove himself to be a bargain if he has a great 2010-11 season. It all depends on how much he brings to the team.

    Smyth has already improved this team through his outstanding character and play. The question is, can he maintain his elite level? After his and JW’s injuries the chemistry with AK was gone. Maybe they get it back next season. Sure hope so.

    @RJC76, Cammy is not good enough for the Kings? Pleez….. He may not have been a “fit” for reasons I have never understood, but he certainly is more than good enough. He is a pure goal scorer – as he is proving in spades in the playffs – exactly the kind of player that many of us think the team needs. I’m not here to argue whether DL made a mistake in letting him go – yesterday’s news – but let’s be realistic about what the guy can do on the ice.

    @rick,
    I should have added to my point. I could care less what a player that was on the Kings 2 years ago is doing now. It doesn’t matter what he’s doing now as it doesn’t affect the Kings. It was a useless point, that was made by a poster that has shown in the past few weeks that he enjoys needling others with his constant negative remarks.

    David Reply:

    @adi,

    He is not worth what he wanted and he had problems with management and in the locker room.

    [Reply]

    Bobby Scribe Reply:

    @David, He had no locker room issues. Cammy is a character guy. The only issue he had with management was that he wanted more money that Dean wanted to give. Come to hfboards.com and take a gander at a thread we have on this. Very educational. It’s the “other games” thread.

    I really, truly think, that RS was not 100% in the playoffs. He just did not look himself at all at any time really, especially not after that spill he took into the boards.

    As for Cammi…it was a shame to see him go, but there were lots of rumours about him not being very good in the locker room. Perhaps a case of little man syndrome?
    Little for a hockey player anyways. :)

    Glad to see him prosper elsewhere though. He’s got natural talent for sure.

    I was shocked myself as he was a goal/point getter but also heard from my source that he was

    @Hockey SureShot, If the Kings were in the pampered Eastern Conference they would have pushed Washington for the points lead. Kings were something like 13-2 verse the east this year. Not to mention the travel per year for a Northeastern team is about 1/10th of what the Kings travel in a year.

    I hadn’t seen this posted anywhere yet, so excuse me if it has.

    “The first spot is Los Angeles, where it’s believed the Kings will likely go up for auction sometime in the near future. We know what you’re thinking. That’s to pave the way for Kings owner Philip Anschutz to move a team into his building in Kansas City, but it turns out he’s apparently just getting tired of losing money.”

    Rich, have you heard anything about this, or is this guy just grasping at straws?

    rick Reply:

    @SuperSonic420, Let’s hope the rumor is true. I would love to see a Kings’ owner who is an avid hockey fan who wants nothing more than to see his millions put a Stanley Cup winner on the ice. We don’t have that now.

    [Reply]

    SuperSonic420 Reply:

    @rick, If you believe DL, he has never been told no by this ownership group to add salary. I guess we will find out for sure this summer, with the team losing so much money, if they can land a Kovi or Marleau and resign Doughty et al, I guess that would finally show this group is committed to win the cup. I just think a recluse owner is fine with me as long as he does the right thing and lets the hockey people do what they do. So far I dont think that hasnt been the case. The last thing this team needs is a new owner that is going to lose money and threaten to move the team to Canada or something.

    [Reply]

    dMan Reply:

    @rick,

    Or maybe you get an owner who’s a penny pincher and destroys everything the Kings have built in the last couple of years in the name of ‘fiscal responsibility.’

    Be careful what you wish for!

    [Reply]

    dMan Reply:

    Meant to add that you really cannot complain what this owner has done for this team and the city in the past five years!

    Jorgen Reply:

    @SuperSonic420, as you can read n the article it is purly speculations. Right now it’s probably more likley that the Islanders move to Kansas than the Kings…and that is grasping the straws, too.

    I believe the speculations surface because the Kings have been very open about their losses. The reality is that LA is one of the largests markets out there…moving to Kansas does not solve the financial woes…selling the team, maybe…but even then the new owner would keep the team in LA for other contractual obligations and for the fact that they are in on of the biggest markets.

    [Reply]

    VanKingsFan Reply:

    @SuperSonic420, Think about it guys… if the NHL refuses to let Phoenix leave the city… then LA is not going anywhere

    [Reply]

    SuperSonic420 Reply:

    @VanKingsFan, But the NHL also has a backdoor agreement if their current deals to remain in Phx fall through, to relocate the team to Winnipeg. I know its a longshot at best anyway, but there is always a possibility that if the Kings do get a new ownership group, it could possibly unravel a lot of things that have started to go right for this team.

    I live in Tampa, I saw them win a cup, and I also saw them bring in new owners and everything just fall apart. I dont want to see that happen with the Kings, thats all.

    hope he can have a fast start like he did at the beginning of this season if not looks like the only good thing is his name. players know what he has done and what he brings every game but after his injury he was no where close to how he was. same for JW both guys need to rest and come back strong because just having experience isn’t good enough for me and I think the Kings organization feels that way too.
