Away from L.A….

Just to catch up on a couple Kings, and Kings prospects, who are still playing these days…

Ryan Smyth, and Canada, opened play in the IIHF World Championships on Saturday with a 5-1 victory over Italy. Smyth did not record a point in the game. On Sunday, Alexander Frolov and Russia beat Slovakia 3-1, and Frolov did not record a point in that game. On Monday, the United States (with Matt Greene and Jack Johnson) faces Denmark while Canada plays Latvia. Russia plays Kazakhstan on Tuesday.

In junior hockey, the four-team field has been set for the Memorial Cup, the big prize in junior. Round-robin play starts Thursday, when Brayden Schenn and the Brandon Wheat Kings face the Windsor Spitfires. Brandon made the field as the host team, while Windsor won the OHL. On Friday, the Calgary Hitmen, the WHL champions — with Martin Jones and Brandon Kozun — face the QMJHL champion, which will either be Saint John or Moncton.
