Captain Canada (again)

Kings winger Ryan Smyth has been named captain of Team Canada for the IIHF World Championships, which are being played in Germany. Canada’s first game is tomorrow against Italy. Smyth has been Canada’s Captain at the World Championships six times now, and did it every year from 2001-05. The United States, with Kings defenseman Jack Johnson as captain, will open the tournament against Germany at about 11:15 a.m. Los Angeles time today. The game is being played in a large outdoor stadium and is expected to draw a crowd of more than 70,000. The game is scheduled to be broadcast on Universal Sports, for those who get that network (it’s not on DirectTV). I’ll have updates on that later…

    This is no surprise and very deserved as well. You know whats interesting as well? Ryan Smyth, Jarret Stoll, and Matt Greene all played on the 06 team in edmonton that went 7 games in the finals vs Carolina…Ya think Edmonton misses the character that these guys brought to their organization?

    Outdoors, 70,000… holy Shnikies…

    I would kill for the chance to see Canada vs. Germany in that kind of atmosphere.

    I cant wait for Canada vs USA (lite) 2010!!!

    p.s. Its Lite because it isn’t quite the Olympics….still should be a great game (even though we all know who is going to win, any body want to dispute me after Sid’s Golden Goal ;)

    @VanKingsFan,

    Drew Doughty’s not playing. USA wins. Sid is nothing without Drew. ;-)

    If Juraj Mikus was playing, I’d say Slovakia wins.

    This makes me wonder if Smytty’s ‘No Pop if we lose’ rule applies to more than just Drew Doughty. What if it also applies to Jack Johnson? USA v Canada could be called ‘Soda Wars’. The winner would be ‘King of Pop’. LOL – OK, that was ‘Bad’.

    Maybe Matt Greene could steal Smytty’s shoes before the game being the ‘Smooth Criminal’ he is and cut them with a hacksaw, throwing off his game. Why am I referencing Michael Jackson so much?

    I went a long way for that one….

    Canada v USA should be a great game.

    So proud of that guy. Well deserved.

    Probably the last time he’ll get to represent Canada since the Kings will be going deeper into the playoffs from now on :)

    At first I was against the Kings players going to the Worlds, especially the older players. The young guys might gain experience, but it makes sense now when Luc brings the New Years Day outdoor game to LA the players will have experience playing for crowds of 70,000+.
