Monarchs win Game 5

Bud Holloway scored the only goal and Jonathan Bernier made 30 saves as the Manchester Monarchs beat the Worcester Sharks 1-0 in Game 5 of their second-round playoff series. The Monarchs now lead the series 3-2 and can win it Friday at Manchester. With his sixth game-winning goal (out of seven Monarchs victories), Holloway tied the AHL record for most game-winning goals in a single playoff season. Holloway’s goal came with 6:49 remaining in the first period. Bernier recorded his second shutout of the playoffs. To read more about the game, click here.

    Go Monarchs,
    Bernier is great and we have all followed him closely, but Bud “In the Clutch” Holloway is the bigger story in the playoffs. If he keeps playing at this level in the Summer Developmental Camp his jersey number may be very low lets see #s 1,4,10,21 are available. Just remembering Luc took 20, because that was the # the Kings gave him when they felt he was likely to make the club, before that it was like 40+.

    I would be surprised if Schenn doesn’t take “10.” Hickey, “4″ (if ever). Teubert (maybe)”22″? (he wears 2 now)

    (5?), (6?), 12, 13, 19, 21, 22, (24?) are (or might be) available.

    Quisp Reply:

    @Moondoggie,

    Nah. Only that Schenn wears 10 now and it rhymes with Schenn, and Teubert wears 2 now and, you know, “TWO-bert.” Loktionov might want 8 (favorite player: Larionov) but that’s, um, taken, so…48 (but I kind of like 88). Clifford is 13 for Barrie, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes 13 in L.A.. Hickey has long been 4, both for Team Canada and Seattle.

    Will all these things happen? No, probably not. But I do like thinking about it.

    12, 19 and 21 are nice, classic numbers that are available, too. (or will be; I guess I shouldn’t assume Jones won’t be re-signed, but my guess is he won’t be.)

    Wudrick wore 11 for both his junior teams, so if he makes it he’ll have to find another number.

    Muzzin wore 6 in the Soo. If he makes it in a couple of years, 6 ought to be waiting for him.

    Kozun has worn 15 (juniors) and 17 (team canada) so maybe…19? In the still unlikely event that he makes the Kings ever. (He might, but objectively it’s a looong shot.)

    Tim Reply:

    @Quisp,
    Teubert wore number 25 when he was with the Reign at the end of the season, even though 2 was available. Played well, too. You could see the improvement over 08-09. Would be nice to see Holloway make it to the bigs. He’d be the first Reign player to do so.

    The 4th line I would like to see next year for the Kings. Holloway – Schenn – (Moller/Parse/Westgarth) the 3 headed RW spot to be decided by production and matchup. I would like to see the 4th line produce 30+ goals and average about 9 minutes of ice time to protect the rest of the line up from fatigue and injury.
    If we get another bad schedule making us play 10 games in 17 days then have 8 days with no games and have another condensed group believe me it will help. Bottom line sharing the arena with 2 NBA teams and the Ocsars/Grammies it could happen even in a non olympic year. The 8 day break I stated was around Christmas and was caused by a Disney Ice Show that stayed for a week.
    Mad I was, still am. I saw no similar gap for any other teams in the NHL.

    [Reply]

    luc20rules Reply:

    @Mike L,
    Just because he starts the season on the 4th line doesn’t mean thats the only place he plays. If Schenn is on the 2nd line does that mean we trade Stoll? Stoll played a few games on the 4th line, but saw increased time on the PP & PK. Any player on the 4th line can be moved up or given a few double shifts per game. They could start the season that way and send him down if it doesn’t workout with in 10 games. I do see your point about the Cap. I just want to start getting a look at the prospects, so we might get an idea of who fits and who we should move or give more Juniors or Minors time.

    Mike L Reply:

    @luc20rules,

    I was under impression you meant whole season, thanks for clearing up

    54FIGHTING Reply:

    @Mike L,

    Just because his cap hit is 3 million doesn’t mean he’s getting paid that. Those ELCs are incentive laden and most players don’t reach those ‘bonuses’ if you will. If you remember it was big news when Doughty scored his 10th goal and earned a bonus clause in his ELC. Schenn will most likely get about 800 thousand.

    I also don’t see how we can’t keep him with the Kings next year even if it is only on the 4th line. He learns 10X as much in the NHL as he does playing another year in the WHL. Then you factor in injuries and you have a nice, big, 2-way center you can move up into that spot on the 3rd or 2nd or 1st line. Remember that he should have made the team last year but the Kings are being patient and Brandon is hosting the CHL playoffs this year which means they get the automatic bid/entry and DL/RH thought that that would be a good experience for Schenn. Next year – not so much, nothing left for him to prove/learn in the WHL.

    @luc20rules, check out the Canucks schedule buddy. Go George!! Lead em to the next round.

    [Reply]

    luc20rules Reply:

    @razzy,
    I would rather go on an extended road trip like the Canucks. Then play a whole bunch of games back to back then get large spans with no games. I actually think that long road trip is where the Canucks turned there season around. When your on the west coast and the travel to come back home for just 1 game those are the killers. Travel is the thing holding the west coast teams back the most from winning the Cup. Just look at San Jose the have one of the best teams for the last decade and they have nothing left by the playoffs.

    [Reply]

    luc20rules Reply:

    @razzy, I took a real good look at the Vancouver schedule, and I think the NHL schedulers did as good of a job possible reducing the travel during that 14 game road trip 8-4-2. Honestly that is better then their overall record 49-28-5, it also reduced the travel by probably 20% from a regular years schedule. I did notice that 6 day strech with no games around Thanksgiving oh, Canadian 11/25. Other than that though the spacing of games was good.

    @luc20rules,

    As careful as they’er being with Bernier do you think they’d pull that guy up for 4th line minutes? No way. He makes 2nd line or stays in juniors. He’s too young for Manchester or I could see that too. Juniors isn’t going to teach him something so I hope he’s good enough for the big club.

  12. Sydor25 says:

    The would have to pay Schenn $3 million, that is just the cap amount. Bonuses must be part of the cap. His salary would be $850,000.

    I agree that he won’t be on the fourth one with that cap hit. The Kings better not have that much cap space available after the summer.

    [Reply]

    Quisp Reply:

    @Sydor25,

    You phrased that very confusingly. Schenn has a cap hit of $3.14 (aka pi), which is the sum of his ELC ($900K) and his bonuses ($2.24MM). Whether or not the Kings have to pay partial or full bonuses to BS depends obviously on how he plays. If you assume the Kings won’t have to pay any bonus, you’re free to spend it elsewhere (i.e. the “bonus cushion”) but if you go over the cap ceiling as a result your ceiling for the following year is reduced by that amount.

    Not sure I understand the point of “better not have much cap space after the summer.” You’re aware, I suppose, that Doughty, Johnson, Moller, Simmonds and Bernier are all RFA 7/1/2011. Even letting Williams and Handzus walk, you’re still talking about several million dollars of extra cap hit we didn’t have before.

    It doesn’t matter what line number Schenn gets. He’s going to play. Just because they call it the fourth line doesn’t mean they’re going to play him like he’s Raitis Ivanans.

    [Reply]

    54FIGHTING Reply:

    @Quisp,

    I put this in a different post but…I am more worried about JJ and Simmonds that those other 3. I think the Kings could give Doughty Duncan Keith money and his cap hit only goes up 2 million. Moller and Bernier have yet to stick in the NHL (but I think we both expect them to next year) so I don’t see them getting big raises either. JJ and Simmonds?? Like I said – worried, but more about JJ than Simmonds.

    [Reply]

    Sydor25 Reply:

    @Quisp,

    Yeah, sorry about the wording. Should avoid responding from the iPhone. It should have been that the Kings wouldn’t have to pay him $3 million, that was just his cap hit.

    The Kings already have enough expiring contracts next off season (2011-12) to allow the extenstions of Doughty, Simmonds & Johnson. Doughty is the only one getting a big monetary raise, but his cap hit is already over $3 million, so it won’t hit the cap too hard. Simmonds won’t get as much as people think, similar to Johnson’s 2nd contract. Johnson is the wild card for his raise, but the Kings will have room for him as well. The Cap will also continue to climb.

    Dean has the room this off season to add that big contract to take the Kings to the next step. If the Kings have $3 million available to play Schenn on the 4th line, then that would mean that Dean didn’t add anyone to the top 6.

    The Kings should only have $1-2 million in cap space without Schenn at the end of traning camp, otherwise the top 6 will be very weak.

    Doesn’t he hit the cap now anyway?

    [Reply]

    luc20rules Reply:

    @DB6, No only if he is on the Kings Active Roster. The Kings can have 23 players on the active roster. The inactive would be injured reserve players. He may have received a signing bonus, but I don’t think players in Juniors get paid, Not Sure. If he goes to ECHL or AHL there is a different pay schedule for most players, and as Sydor25 mentioned his base NHL salary is $825,000, so $2,750,000 is based on him reaching milestones to get bonuses. I would guess one may be to play X # of NHL games. Others goals, assists, etc.

    As with probably all AHL teams except for Hershey, hardly no one goes to playoff games. I don’t understand it, I wouldn’t miss a playoff game any more than I’d miss a regular season game.

    As far as a big crowd, unfortunately, The Verizon hasn’t seen big crowds for quite a few years. It use to be there were sellouts several times during the season (9,900+), but those days are long gone.

    [Reply]

    holly Reply:

    @Simarosa, People don’t go to the playoff games because it’s too short notice for group tickets. Plus, you don’t necessarily get all STH and package owners to purchase for the post-seasons, so you don’t have that existing built in base of people who’s tickets count towards the attendance regardless of their attendance.

    We did have a couple of nights this year that were 7,000+. But I agree, it’s not like the first few seasons where the Verizon was essentially sold out every night.
