The Manchester Monarchs lost to the Worcester Sharks 3-2 tonight in Game 4 of their second-round AHL playoff series, which is now even at 2-2. The Monarchs led 2-1, on goals by Gabe Gauthier and Justin Azevedo, going into the third period, but the Sharks scored twice, including the winning goal with 33.3 seconds remaining. Jonathan Bernier stopped 33 of 36 shots. Game 5 of the best-of-seven series is Wednesday in Worcester.
Too bad…
Could’ve had a stranglehold over the series. Let’s hope it goes better for them than it did for the Kings.

Oh, and Rich, I notice you waited fro the VAN/CHI game to end before you posted! (or was it coincidence?)

Tonight’s game was a joke. No lies.
And this is not one of those ‘Well, the team played kind of not so well, so let’s call it a joke’ type of things.

Bernier must have seen the poll on this site and all of the Kings’ fans already anointing him the #1 next year. A starting NHL goalie is not made in 3 games or one season for that matter. Just ask Jamie Storr or Daniel Bertiaume.

@txkingsfan,
Or any Kings goalie for the last 15 years(except for Potvin).

@txkingsfan,
I think Bernier is going to be great, but see your point. LaBarbara NHL career started 9-0 didn’t he, but really the jury is still out on him he played great for Phoenix this year as the backup. I still can’t believe he beat us twice in a shootout this year, he couldn’t win one of those to save his job the last year with the Kings.

Vancouver smoked the Hawks. Maybe the Kings will get some respect from the league.

Saw the last 10 minutes of the Manchester game on AHL TV.
That was NOT a very good impression made by the Monarchs. The game-winning goal came after multiple cycles in the Monarchs zone where the puck could not be cleared. The Monarchs will need much more end-of-game jam to beat the Sharks in the best 2 of three series remaining.
As for the Chicago-Vancouver game, the end of first period goal with 10 seconds to play killed the Hawks. The Canucks are on a serious roll.

@BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy, You mean they did to the Monarchs the same way it’s done to the Kings???? Imagine that.

@Old Time Hockey, exactly heal time the entire 3rd…2 shots only, goalie stand on his head and winning shot goes in with 1:20 remaining.

These are the kind of games that will mature Bernier to be a better goalie in the NHL.

@james, hmmmmmmm why are these not the games that will mature Quick to be a better goalie in the NHL? Kings’ fans want his head for winning 39 games – most with little to no goal support and many because of miraculous saves on his part. Remember that Quick is (1) still very young, (2) a first year starting goalie, (3) going to get better. TM even stated that he should not have played him so much down the stretch. He was worn down and the pressure of the first Kings playoffs in 10 years, his first playoffs, and all the personal issues he endured got to him. He’s young – it will help him mature.

@txkingsfan,
Agreed. I guess if Quick sucks for giving up 2 goals what does that make Bernier in the minors right? I mean lets be consistent here.
I hope Bernier is the real deal and he and Quick have a big battle. It’s better for the team if they’re both good. Quick proved himself over a whole season and got as you said little to no goal support…even in shootouts.

@Dan H.,
As Bako said:
Bernier got 0 support in the 3rd when Manchester managed only 2 shots and the majority of the game was played in front of Bernier the Manchester end.
Bernier stood on his head to keep the tie but was finally scored upon with 1:20 remaining.

@Dan H.,
Kind of like Quick getting something like 1.2 goals for the Kings in his last 10? Yet everyone said he lost it, he sucked, it was his fault, call up Bernier?
Hey, the Monarchs lose Game 1 by one goal. They win Game 2 in OT, then dominate Game 3. Then, in Game 4, they have a lead at home going into the 3rd, and blow the game. Sound familiar? History had better not repeat itself. The reason we didn’t call Bernier up for the playoffs is because we needed him to get the playoff experience in Manchester.

@wontonkings01, They had no right to even have the lead at all. It was pure fluke.
The whole evening was a fluke and just completely strange. I blame it on the fact that a Sharks scratch was allowed into the Monarchs’ player suite where he spent the evening dressed in sweats drinking beer.

@wontonkings01,
You forget that Manchester already won one series. At this point Bernier is going to have at least 10 playoff games, unless they let Zatoff start one.

Keep posting Rich! This is gonna be a looooonggg summer.

Monarchs lose? Bernier human? BLASPHEMY!!!!! Funny, how when you don’t get support from the guys in front of you, it doesn’t really matter who’s between the pipes does it? Let’s think a little more before we annoit Bernier and sell Quick down the river. Just ask Niemi in Chicago if he thought he got any help tonight, just to drive the point home.

@Nitrohockey, I agree with you completely. I am really looking forward to a tandem of Quick and Bernier next season. As for who will be #1 ? Well,may the best goalie win.

@puck73,
Since both are good I was hoping that it would be like the 92-93 season where Melrose rode the hot goalie. He pulled away from that in the playoffs and went with Hrudey, but for the regular season he had Robb “the blueline” Stauber in every 4th game or so and if he had an exceptional game he would give him another start. That gave the backup incentive to play well. I also remember Hrudey being allowed to play many in a row if he was hot. I think now its far closer in skill level, and we should have a Goalie 1A & 1B, but Murray’s quotes really don’t leave any room for that. He will have a #1 Goalie and a #2 Goalie, but hopefully he is flexable on that as Quick just wore down at the end.

Bernier was about the only player who actually played 60 minutes, most of the other players, maybe 5-10 minutes. One Worcester goal went in off one of our players and according to the tape that Morris reviewed after the game, the winning goal was kicked in.
Hope the Monarchs from Friday’s game are the ones who show up to play Wednesday.
[Reply]
how about Martin Jones….he s given up one goal in two playoff games so far!!!!!
[Reply]
The pattern of the series is eerily familiar…
But the team characteristics are reversed. The Sharks are the more size/puck possession team. The Monarchs have more speed and skill.
