Kings 2, Canucks 2

The Canucks tied the game 1:57 into the third period. Kevin Bieksa came to the net, took a centering pass from Daniel Sedin and shot from close range. Quick made the stop, but the puck trickled through his pads and over the line.

End of second: Kings 2-1

Shots are 26-11 in favor of the Kings through two periods. Teams in this series are 2-1 when leading going into the third period.

Kings 2, Canucks 1

The Kings took the lead back with 4:03 left in the second period, three seconds after the end of a power play. The Kings put pressure on Luongo, and Anze Kopitar passed the puck left, from the slot, to Drew Doughty at the top of the left circle. Doughty shot and scored, off a deflection, [...]

Kings 1, Canucks 1

Vancouver tied the game 8:38 into the second period, just nine seconds into a power play. Alex Edler took a point shot and Steve Bernier, stationed in front the net, tipped the shot that got through Quick to make it 1-1.

End of first: Kings 1-0

The Kings outshot the Canucks 16-5 in the first period and got the period’s only goal, as each team went scoreless in two power-play opportunities.

Kings 1, Canucks 0

The Kings got off to a torrid start, even though they had to kill two penalties in the first eight minutes, and Alexander Frolov got the scoring stared with his first career playoff goal with 9:52 remaining in the first period. Frolov, being defended by Henrik Sedin behind the net, swept in front and scored [...]

Afternoon listening

Here’s some pregame audio, provided by Nick Nickson, from Ryan Smyth, Brad Richardson, Anze Kopitar and Terry Murray in advance of tonight’s game… April 25 audio Also, I asked Murray today about the type of attitude he would like his team to have going into Game 6. Does he want them to be loose, or [...]

Lineup changes

The Canucks are expected to make one lineup change tonight, with Tanner Glass replacing Michael Grabner. As we know, Scott Parse will replace the injured Rich Clune on the Kings’ fourth line. Here’s what Terry Murray said today about his fourth line, and his plans for possibly shortening his bench or making changes during the [...]

Game 6 mindset

Not surprisingly, there hasn’t been a lot of wisdom to soak in from Kings players and coaches over the past couple days. Everyone was upset after the Game5 loss and there isn’t much to say, heading into a potential season-ending game, expect the usual cliches about staying focused and playing a 60-minute game. The proof [...]

Tonight’s lineup

The Kings are expected to go with Scott Parse on the fourth line next to Jeff Halpern and Justin Williams tonight. Terry Murray said that he wants to start the game playing four lines but would shorten the bench or move guys around as needed, not a surprise given that the season is on the [...]

Too many minutes?

Sometimes stats are revealing. Sometimes they’re just numbers. What, then, to make of this? Eight goalies played more than 4,000 minutes in the NHL this season. If the first-round series end up the way they’re leaning right now — Chicago over Nashville, Vancouver over the Kings, Detroit over Phoenix, Washington over Montreal, Boston over Buffalo [...]

Ready to go?

It’s hard to judge the mood of a locker room by standing in it for 15 minutes, but while there didn’t seem to be a lot of smiling and joking in the Kings’ locker room after practice today, there also didn’t seem to be any head-hanging. What to make of that? I haven’t the slightest [...]

Bygones being bygones

Regardless of whether Shane O’Brien “apologized” for his actions in Game 5 — a phrase Canadian reporters seemed to want to affix to his words — O’Brien did express some regret about his post-fight celebration. Murray, who referred to O’Brien as a “clown” after Game 5, was asked if O’Brien’s “apology” meant anything to him. [...]

Time to change (more)

Terry Murray made changes to three of his four lines before Game 5, and got handed a five-goal loss. So more changes were in store Saturday, with Brown joining Handzus and Modin, and a new line of Frolov, Richardson and Stoll put together. Here’s what Murray said about the changes… MURRAY: “Changes are related to [...]

Clune update

Kings winger Rich Clune left the ice, seemingly in significant pain, after his third-period fight with Rick Rypien last night. Clune did not practice today, and Terry Murray said that Clune had suffered a stinger, which is essentially a pinched nerve in the neck. MURRAY:  “ I don’t know how long. He certainly will be [...]

It’s all Quick

Today after practice, Terry Murray was asked the question that had to be on everyone’s mind. So…Jonathan Bernier? Murray made it crystal clear, minutes after Game 5, that Quick would be his Game 6 starter, even though Quick has allowed 10 goals in his last two games. Bernier, albeit at a lower level, allowed five [...]

O’Brien’s reaction

Here’s what Shane O’Brien told reporters today about his hand-waving celebration after his third-period fight with Wayne Simmonds last night, an incident that led Kings coach Terry Murray to call O’Brien a “clown.” “I wasn’t trying to show anybody up,” said O’Brien. “It was a big game, there was some emotion, the crowd was standing. [...]

Saturday practice lines

Here’s how the Kings are skating this morning… Smyth-Kopitar-Simmonds Modin-Handzus-Brown Richardson-Stoll-Frolov (not certain of the center here) Parse/Halpern/Williams/Ivanans There don’t appear to be any changes on defense.

Not an even series

One of the storylines of this series continues to be 5-on-5 play. It seemed natural to assume that unless the Kings could keep up their torrid pace on the power play for the entire season, eventually their 5-on-5 weakness would catch up with them, and it appears as though it has. On the power play, [...]
