End of first: Kings 1-0

Kings outshot the Islanders 9-5 and got the period’s only goal, as both teams went 0-for-1 on the power play.

Kings 1, Islanders 0

The Kings got some sustained pressure, and a goal, from their new-look top line with 6:25 remaining in the first period. Wayne Simmonds passed the puck out of the corner, to the slot, and Brad Richardson fired a wrist shot to beat Dwayne Roloson.

Today’s notebook

Need to catch up on today’s news and notes before the game? Please check out my LAKings.com notebook for today… Kings notebook (March 20) Will tonight’s game come down to power-play success? Both teams have been hot on the penalty kill of late. The Kings are 19-for-19 on the penalty kill in their last six [...]

Scary injury for Roe

Kings prospect Garrett Roe, a seventh-round pick in 2008, has had a strong season for St. Cloud State, but suffered a scary injury in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament last night in St. Paul, Minn. Roe had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher after going head-first into the boards while killing [...]

Fatigue or momentum?

This is the second of three consecutive games in which the Kings will play a team that played the previous night. Chicago played Wednesday night, then battered the Kings on Thursday. The New York Islanders played last night in Anaheim, and Colorado will play at Anaheim tomorrow before facing the Kings on Monday. Does it [...]

Back at it

Jeff Halpern and Scott Parse, two players who were healthy scratches from Thursday’s loss to Chicago, will be back in the Kings’ lineup tonight in high-profile roles. Halpern, who had centered the Kings’ fourth line since arriving in a March 3 trade from Tampa Bay, is expected to center Alexander Frolov and Justin Williams tonight, [...]

Still waiting

Terry Murray said this morning that he contemplated making a change to his defensive unit, and putting Davis Drewiske back in the lineup, but decided against it. Drewiske has eight points, a minus-3 rating and 14 penalty minutes in 40 games this season, but has not played since a Feb. 11 game against Edmonton and [...]

They are (almost) family

Former Kings forward Matt Moulson leads the Islanders with 26 goals this season. Moulson started strong, dipped a bit in the middle of the season but now has three goals in his last five games. Moulson is obviously familiar with the Kings, and with goalie Jonathan Quick in particular. This summer, Moulson will marry the [...]

Playoff ticket info

The Kings today announced availability for (potential) playoff tickets. Individual-game tickets will go on sale Saturday, April 3, at 10 a.m. First-round tickets — and the ability to purchase tickets for any/all subsequent rounds — will be made available a week earlier (on March 27) for those who place a 5-percent deposit on season tickets [...]

Morning skate update

The Kings are expected to skate, up front, the way they practiced yesterday, with Rich Clune and Raitis Ivanans as the healthy scratches. Terry Murray said he considered making a change on defense, and putting in Davis Drewiske, but decided against it. More from the skate to come…

Desperation vs. panic

The Kings talk a lot about playing with “desperation,” but there can be a fine line between desperation and panic, which is something that every team wants to avoid. Changing lines and bringing intense focus to a period of bad play can be helpful, but does it also make players hyper-sensitive in terms of being [...]

Top-line disappointment

There was optimism all around when Justin Williams returned from his broken leg last week and reunited with Anze Kopitar and Ryan Smyth on a first line that had tremendous success early this season. That success did not carry over to mid-March. In its three games together, the line did not generate a point in [...]

Complacent Kings?

This is an issue that I’ve tried to explore a couple times this season, either by asking direct questions or question that infer. The Kings,  a couple times this season, have tended to dip severely immediately after reaching a high point in the standings. Now, some of this is completely natural, and within the natural [...]

Practice emphasis

In addressing what has been going wrong with the Kings of late, there’s two sides of it, a mental side and a technical side. We’ll get into some of the “mental” stuff later, but first, here’s Terry Murray explaining the points of emphasis in practice today as he tries to get things turned around, particularly [...]

Lines shuffled in practice

Here’s how the Kings’ forwards skated this morning… Richardson-Kopitar-Simmonds Modin-Handzus-Brown Frolov-Halpern-Williams Smyth-Stoll-Parse Ivanans-Clune We’ll see if that’s how things look in tomorrow’s game. We’re just standing and waiting now, as Terry Murray is having a series of post-practice meetings.

March 19 magic numbers

Here’s the updated numbers. No movement where the Kings need there to be movement, in the 7-8-9 spots. It’s been pointed out that the Kings’ fortunes have gone south a bit since these numbers were published. I pointed out that John Torchetti was in the building last night, as a Chicago assistant coach…thus the 2006 [...]

Tonight’s game story (March 18)

Here’s my LAKings.com game story for tonight, with stats and video included. As always, thanks for reading… Chicago beats Kings 3-0 The Kings will be back at practice in El Segundo at 11 a.m. tomorrow.

Murray postgame quotes

Terry Murray’s postgame thoughts… (on the game…) MURRAY: “There was not much good out of that one there tonight. I thought the penalty kill — obviously, with the four-minute minor and then to come back and kill another one, six minutes in the first period — was really good, and that should have energized us, [...]

Smyth postgame quotes

Ryan Smyth’s postgame thoughts… SMYTH: “We have to learn from our mistakes, and carry forth. We just have to hit the reset button. … Tonight we took a four-minute minor, and sometimes that can disrupt the flow of the bench. It is not a lack of effort. We have to dig in a little bit [...]

Brown postgame quotes

Dustin Brown’s postgame thoughts… (on the game…) BROWN: “We only had six shots in the first period, but I thought our first period was a solid period. The second period, we came out and did not have that jump. Tonight, in the end it is my fault. I turned the puck over twice on one [...]
