A furious finish

Tonight’s game is the first of seven games in 11 days for the Kings. It includes two sets of back-to-back games on the road and — something that is easily forgotten — the fact that there are also two long flights at the end of the road trips. The Kings have to fly back from [...]

Marathon men

Daryl Evans was back at the rink this morning after completing the Los Angeles Marathon (I’d be in bed for about a week). Maybe he will have some competition next year? Terry Murray offered that he used to run marathons as well, but said he hadn’t run one since 1999. “I don’t even remember my [...]

Playoff time?

The website sportsclubstats.com uses a mathematical formula to predict which teams will make the NHL playoffs and where they will finish. According to the site, the Kings now have a 99.3-percent chance of making the playoffs and are the favorites, at 41 percent, to finish fifth in the Western Conference (Nashville is at 23 percent). [...]

Finding some offense

The Kings managed a win Saturday against the New York Islanders, but they didn’t manage to shake their recent trend of not putting a significant number of goals/shots on the board. The Kings have scored two or fewer goals in five consecutive games — and totaled six in regulation — and have totaled 28 or [...]

Attack of the Clune

As previously posted, Rich Clune will be back in the Kings’ lineup tonight, in place of Scott Parse, in the Kings’ only lineup change from Saturday. Here’s what Terry Murray said this morning about returning Clune to the lineup… MURRAY: “I’m going to put Clune in and try to keep everybody, on the forward side [...]

Standings watch

The Kings finally got some help in the Western Conference standings Sunday. Minnesota beat Calgary 4-3, keeping the Kings six points clear of the ninth-place Flames with two games in hand. The Kings’ “magic number” to eliminate the Flames is now 15, down from 19 less than 48 hours ago. Nashville did win, to move [...]

Winning the close ones

What do good teams have in common? For the most part, they win one-goal games. The Phoenix Coyotes, this season’s most surprising team, has won 72.2 percent of its one-goal games this season, the highest success rate in the entire NHL. New Jersey is No. 2 and Pittsburgh is No. 3. The Kings are fifth, [...]

Congrats to Daryl

Congratulations to Kings radio analyst Daryl Evans, who completed the Los Angeles Marathon this morning in approximately five hours. Daryl was on the air for “Kings Talk” until after 11 p.m. last night, then had to be at Dodger Stadium by 7:30 a.m. today for the start of the race.

What’s my line?

Terry Murray today addressed what seems to be one of the favorite topics of a segment of fans. No, not Ilya Kovalchuk. Line-combination changes, and the frequency of them. Specifically, Murray was asked whether it was a troubling sign that he still felt the need to make changes with less than a month to go [...]

Shortening the bench

It’s not uncommon for Terry Murray to cut back to three lines in the third period of a tight game. Usually, though, it’s players such as Raitis Ivanans and fellow fourth-liners who end up getting fastened to the bench late. Saturday, though, Alexander Frolov and Justin Williams each had one shift early in the third [...]

Sunday practice update

A couple more line tweaks today, as Alexander Frolov and Justin Williams, two players who spent almost all of the third period on the bench, moved down to the fourth line… Richardson-Kopitar-Simmonds Smyth-Stoll-Parse Modin-Handzus-Brown Frolov-Halpern-Williams Clune/Ivanans More from practice to come, including Terry Murray talking about the line changing and Frolov/Williams in particular…

Murray postgame quotes

Terry Murray’s postgame thoughts… (on the win…) MURRAY: “It was a win. It was a very important win. It’s a win that is very hard to come by tonight, because this is a game you’re supposed to win as a team, and those are the hardest kinds of games to win. But it’s two points. [...]

Richardson postgame quotes

Brad Richardson’s postgame quotes… (on his goal…) RICHARDSON: “Simmer made a great play. He kind of waited for the guy to swing away from me. I just tried to shoot as quick as possible.” RICHARDSON: “We’re just trying to mix things up. We hadn’t been playing great in the last few games, so we’re just [...]

Quick postgame quotes

Jonathan Quick’s postgame thoughts… (on the win…) QUICK: “It was a great game. It was a great third period, just having that lead and not giving it up, and the way we played, the way we killed penalties, it gives the team a little boost in confidence after these last two games. As a team, [...]

Brown postgame quotes

Dustin Brown’s postgame thoughts… (on the win…) BROWN: “We had 60 minutes. That’s the first time we’ve had 60 minutes in a while. It was a huge win at a huge time in the season for us. The Islanders played a good game. It was a tight game. I think all the games, from here [...]

FINAL: Kings 1, Islanders 0

The Kings held on to get two points as Jonathan Quick recorded his fourth shutout of the season. The Kings shortened their bench considerably in the third period, as Alexander Frolov and Justin Williams got one shift each and Scott Parse got two.

End of second: Kings 1-0

The scoreless period ended just in time for the Kings, who spent much of the final five minutes trying to clear the puck from the front of their net. Shots were 12-7 Islanders in the second period.
