The Kings’ first goal is likely to be changed from Anze Kopitar to Brad Richardson. Richardson said he tipped the puck before it went in, and video review seems to confirm it. In that case, Kopitar would go back to being tied for his career high in goals.
From the locker room…
Terry Murray said Jonathan Quick will start in goal tomorrow, even though Murray had some criticism for Quick’s first-period play. In general, the Kings took the attitude that it was positive to rally from two goals and get a point on the road. Murray singled out Alexander Frolov, in particular, for his strong third-period play. Kings 3, Avalanche 3

Avalanche 3, Kings 2
After a scoreless second period, the Kings pulled within 3-2 with a power-play goal 40 seconds into the third period. Drew Doughty shot from the middle of the ice, just inside the blue line, with heavy traffic in front and beat Anderson.
End of second: Avalanche 3-1
Shots were 9-6 Avalanche in the second period. The Kings will be on the power play for the first 1:54 of the third period.
End of first: Avalanche 3-1
Shots were 18-5 Avalanche in the first period, and the Kings were called for 10 minutes’ worth of penalties in the period. Colorado will be on the power play for the first 1:20 of the second period.
Avalanche 3, Kings 1
The Avalanche scored another power-play goal with 1:52 remaining in the first period. Drew Doughty broke his stick and was playing with Michal Handzus’ stick when Paul Stastny centered a puck. Doughty tried to push the puck behind the net but put it right into his own net. Erik Ersberg then replaced Quick, who stopped [...]
Avalanche 2, Kings 1
The Kings’ streak of 29 consecutive killed penalties ended with 6:39 remaining in the first period, with Brad Richardson in the penalty box for a double-minor high-sticking penalty. The Kings were left further shorthanded when Jarret Stoll broke his stick, and Milan Hejduk shot and scored from the left circle.
Kings 1, Avalanche 1
The teams exchanged goals in short order in the first period. Colorado took a 1-0 lead when Matt Hendricks walked out and fired a shot from a tough angle that goalie Jonathan Quick couldn’t cover before it went into the net at the 7:38 mark. At exactly the 10:00 mark, the Kings tied the game. [...]
Today’s notebook/rematch
You can catch up on today’s news and notes by checking out my LAKings.com notebook for today. Thanks for reading… Kings notebook (March 24) Also, here were Terry Murray’s thoughts about Monday’s game against Colorado, and what he expects tonight… MURRAY: “What stood out to me was just a pretty good, intense hockey game. Both [...]
League vs. players (no surprise)
The NHL and its players can’t even agree on the things they agree on. Both the league and its players seem to agree that hits to the head should be regulated as soon as possible, but some substantial acrimony has developed in terms of how exactly the rule should be changed. The league wants to [...]
A veteran group
Sometimes, you just never know how things will work out. The line of Ryan Smyth, Jarret Stoll and Justin Williams got tossed together a few days ago, largely because none of them were playing particularly well, and the thought was that putting them together might cause a spark. It seems to have worked, or at [...]
Different team, same success
It’s often said that a trade was “good for both teams.” That probably gets thrown around too much, but last year’s deal that, essentially, swapped Kyle Quincey for Ryan Smyth gave both teams what they needed. The Kings got a veteran scoring winger and the Avalanche got a talented young defenseman. Quincey has played 70 [...]
Greene, on his injury
Here’s what Matt Greene said this morning about the upper-body injury that will keep him out of the lineup for the Kings’ game against Colorado tonight… GREENE: “I’m still a little sore. We’ll just see what happens with the training staff. Hopefully I’ll get in a good day of treatment and we’ll see what happens [...]
Greene injured
Matt Greene will miss tonight’s game with an undisclosed upper-body injury, sustained after the hit by Colorado’s Darcy Tucker on Monday (for which Tucker got a one-game suspension). Greene is considered “day-to-day.” Davis Drewiske will be in the lineup, as will Peter Harrold, as a replacement for Rich Clune on the line with Alexander Frolov [...]
Quick numbers
With one more win this season, Jonathan Quick would become the 24th goalie in league history to record 40 wins in a season (it has happened 39 different times).
Morning reading
Greetings from Denver, where they’re having a beautiful spring morning. If by “spring” you mean about 10 inches of snow… Here’s my LAKings.com feature for this week, on the Kings’ highly successful penalty-kill unit. As a complementary bonus, click below for an interview with assistant coach (and penalty-kill specialist) Mark Hardy. Now Playing in L.A.: [...]
Colorado’s Tucker suspended
Colorado’s Darcy Tucker has been suspended for one game — tomorrow’s game against the Kings — for “making excessive physical contact on an icing play.” Tucker was called for tripping Matt Greene on the play, 10:13 into the third period.
Quick and Quick
As previously posted, Terry Murray announced today that Jonathan Quick will start both games on this road trip, Wednesday at Colorado and Thursday at St. Louis. Murray had previously said that he would consider starting Erik Ersberg in one of those games. Quick has started 64 of the Kings’ 71 games this season. MURRAY: “I [...]
