Kings 1, Stars 1

The Kings took two penalties late in the first period, and the Stars capitalized with a 5-on-3 goal 17 seconds into the second period. Stephanie Robidas forced a turnover in the Kings’ zone, and two Stars were all alone in front of Jonathan Quick’s net. Brenden Morrow took the pass from Mike Ribeiro and scored [...]

End of first: Kings 1-0

The Kings outshot the Stars 12-7 in the first period and went 1-for-3 on the power play. The Stars will have a two-man advantage for the first 1:14 of the second period.

Kings 1, Stars 0

After accomplishing little on their first power play, the Kings got a goal on their second attempt. Anze Kopitar shot from the middle of the right circle and, after a touch by Ryan Smyth, Michal Handzus knocked in the rebound from the front of the net with 4:08 remaining in the first period.

Other hardware?

There’s increasing buzz around the league about Drew Doughty’s chances for winning the Norris Trophy, but what about other trophies? The Hart and Vezina trophies are probably out of reach, but what about the Selke, for top defensive forward? I asked Terry Murray today is he would consider any of his players as candidates. MURRAY: [...]

The wild West

With Calgary losing to Boston today, the Kings’ major number for making the playoffs has been reduced from 10 to 8. If the Kings win in regulation tonight, it will be 6 (and, if they lose in overtime/shootout, 7). It should be a wild night in the West. The No. 6 Kings host Dallas, No. [...]

Greene update

Matt Greene will miss a third consecutive game with an upper-body injury and the Kings will make one change on defense, with Peter Harrold replacing Davis Drewiske. Greene participated in today’s morning skate but his status for Monday’s game at Minnesota still seems up in the air. MURRAY: “I’m looking at it as a day-to-day [...]

Top line reunited

When Justin Williams returned from his broken leg this month, Terry Murray immediately reunited the Smyth-Kopitar-Williams line, and it didn’t really work. Now, after a few games apart, the line is back together… MURRAY: “We’re getting into the last few games of the season, and it’s time to see it come together. They’re two veteran [...]

Tonight’s lineup

The Kings are expected to skate as follows tonight… Smyth-Kopitar-Williams Modin-Handzus-Brown Frolov-Stoll-Simmonds Clune-Richardson-Halpern Scuderi-Doughty Johnson-Harrold Jones-O’Donnell Quick More to come from the morning skate…

Iron man, or too much?

Is Jonathan Quick playing too much? That seems to be a big question on everyone’s mind (and maybe a future poll question here?). New Jersey’s Martin Brodeur leads NHL goalies in games (68) and minutes (3,970:22) played this season. Quick is second in both categories, at 66 games and 3,922:27 minutes. I asked Terry Murray [...]

Dangerous opponents?

We have reached that point in the NHL season in which some teams can, at least mentally, fold the tent. For the past couple weeks, only Edmonton has truly been out of the Western Conference playoff race, but now teams such as the Kings’ next two opponents, Dallas and Minnesota, can — if they’re being [...]

Shoot

There are all sorts of cliches and sayings about shooting the puck. The most famous is probably some variation of Wayne Gretzky’s “You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take.” Then there’s the Kings. In their last two games, they’ve been over the 30-shot mark, but half of those shots came in the [...]

Greene update

Matt Greene, he of the undisclosed upper-body injury, completed a vigorous practice today, albeit one without any contact. After he finished, Greene said he didn’t know if he would be able to play tomorrow, but a few minutes later, Terry Murray answered the question for him, saying that Greene would be out of the lineup. [...]

Friday practice update

A light practice today, with only six skaters and two goalies on the ice, but there was some news. Matt Greene will not play tomorrow. Terry Murray said he was unsure of whether he would make any lineup changes. Some talk today of Jonathan Quick’s heavy workload and the Kings’ need to generate more shots [...]

Who’s your MVP?

We’re getting down to the last couple weeks of the season, and the time when media members will start voting for Kings team awards, including MVP. Who gets your vote? The poll below lists eight names, with an option to write in your own choice. I listed the No. 1 goalie and the top two [...]

Murray, with Bettman

Terry Murray was the guest of commissioner Gary Bettman on the “NHL Hour” on SiriusXM yesterday. You can give it a listen here… Terry Murray on NHL Hour with Gary Bettman

Loktionov off IR, to Manchester

Andrei Loktionov has been activated from injured reserve and assigned to Manchester of the AHL, where he should be able to play the last couple weeks of the season, and playoffs. Nobody ever wants to get hurt, of course, but there’s been a little joking about how Loktionov hit the jackpot. He came up and [...]

Doughty featured in S.I.

A national profile in Sports Illustrated is a big deal for a hockey player, and that’s what Drew Doughty got this week. SI writer Michael Farber spent a few days in L.A. last week and put together this fantastic feature on Doughty and his emergence as a top defenseman in the NHL. It’s definitely worth [...]

A request

I fully realize that writing this makes me sound like a high school principal, which leaves me a bit queasy, but I think/hope that most of you will understand, and that you’ll understand that this applies to about 5 percent of the people reading it, at most. The comments are getting out of hand. I’ve [...]

Murray postgame quotes

Terry Murray’s postgame thoughts… (on the game…) MURRAY: “I saw it as a lot of missed power-play opportunities. When they come right at the start of the game like that, sometimes it’s more difficult to handle those. We proved that here tonight with those. But we had our opportunities later on. The power play didn’t [...]
