Quick’s thoughts

After practice today, Jonathan Quick gave his thoughts about the Kings’ goalie situation and Terry Murray’s decision to go with Jonathan Bernier tomorrow night and Quick on Saturday…

QUICK: “I feel good, and I’m looking forward to every game the rest of this season. I’m looking forward to getting in there and playing some games. I think I can speak for the guys in here, that we’re really looking forward to the playoffs. We didn’t clinch, but we think that game last night was just what we needed. We needed a big win to turn the team around and start going forward here.”

Question: Knowing that every goalie wants to play every game, are you OK with the way this is playing out?

QUICK: “I don’t make the decision. Terry makes that decision, so that’s up to him. Whatever he thinks is best for the team to win games, I think that’s what he’s going to do, and whatever he feels is best for us, from here on out, that’s what he’s going to do. I speak on behalf of the team, and we have our trust in him and we trust his decisions. He knows what he’s doing, and he’s going to make the right decisions.”

Question: Did they talk to you about the plan going forward?

QUICK: “The plan is for me to come back and play Saturday, so I’m looking forward to getting some work in and making sure I’m sharp on everything. I’ve got another work day tomorrow, with the pregame skate. I’ll have a work day Friday and then I’m looking forward to starting Saturday.”

Yes, Ersberg is not waiver-exempt but there’s no reason to send him down. The Kings can carry three goalies if they want. There is no roster limit after the trade deadline. Once he’s healthy he can be a healthy scratch.

@Quisp, Again, there is the issue of having almost an entire team (I believe there are 3 players that aren’t) of Kings prospects who will be hung out to dry without an actual #1 goaltender.

@holly, Zatkoff played a couple of dozen games in Manchester 2 years ago. He was the number 1 for a while and the reports I heard were that he did an excellant job. Maybe not a JB, but still one of the top 5 in the league. Give him a few games to get his body adjusted.

    DellaNooch Reply:

@Quisp, Add to your point, Ersberg could go down to Manchester, but I do not believe he can play in the playoffs, as he wasn’t on the clear day roster…additionally, if we did send him down and he was claimed, the team that takes him cannot play him until their season is over, so it makes no sense to take him on waivers.

I want him to take that and turn it into motivation to play at his best, and continue to earn his spot as the number one.

I do admire Quick’s professionalism, as I do Ersberg’s by the way, who has to feel like he’s being left behind.

He works as hard as anyone in practice, takes his lump for the team. The guy is class all the way. And personally, I think he’s NEVER been given his just due by TM. Nonetheless, he keeps his chin up, his mouth shut and does his job. I think it would be good for him if he got sent down, and some other team took a chance on him. Because it’s clear the Kings have no plans for him.

There is just no way to have a normal home life until the baby is 4-5 months old, and you still are going to have some bad days. I would keep Bernier up and alternate them in the final games and, depending on performance, adjust my thinking then as toward determining who should start in the playoffs. You have to go with whoever’s playing best at the time.

I would do the same thing next year. There’s no rule that says that one goalie has to start most of your games (and I don’t buy into the theory that somebody’s feelings are going to get hurt, or that somebody got “promised” this or that). The only reason most teams have one preferred goalie is because great goalies are few and far between, and so one guy is usually clearly better than the other and so gets the most starts.

I know I’m repeating myself (I know because I copied and pasted this from a post I made yesterday) but I am doing so because this may be my most intelligent thought ever (okay, the truth is I’ve been pushing this idea of the season because I didn’t have much faith in EE and I didn’t want to burn out the golden goose)….

All things being equal, I expect the two Jonathons to be a strong tandem for the remainder of the year and next year–maybe the best pair in the league–but we will see….

One thing for sure: this is a very good problem to have.

  12. carol vadnais says:

You CAN’T send JB down now. Just like other examples of goalies who stepped in at the end of the year when they got hot (hedburg, Ozzie), you just have to go with the best goaltender. Too much is at stake. If JB wins on thursday, you have to ride him. The whole “Quick is our number one” goaltender is ridiculous. He has as much playoff experience as JB. You go with the hot goalie and ride him to the cup (Like Ward in Carolina for example)

He’s going to hear a lot about Bernier and “goalie competition” in the coming year or 2.

We may end up having the best 1-2 goalie punch in the NHL,
as long as we have the Quick/Bernier combo in nets
    for us.

    Ultimately, 1 will be moved.

But hopefully, BOTH will perform at a high level until then, setting us up for a very sweet trade in 1-2 years.

@Sergei Prozacutov, My big issue with next year is that the writing just might be on the wall and Bernier just might be the #1 next year. The problem? Quick’s quite apparently not a backup goaltender–he needs lots of playing time. That probably means he’s out if Bernier is the number one. However, that’s next season. Let’s worry about it then.
