In the past five days, the Kings’ magic number for making the playoffs has fallen from 12 to 8, but that’s because Calgary lost twice, not because the Kings won. Had the Kings won their last two games, the magic number right now would be 4. The Kings could actually move into fifth place in the West tonight, if they win and Nashville loses to Florida in regulation, but the Kings are currently in seventh place, only one point ahead of eighth-place Colorado. “Urgency” has been the buzz word around the Kings for the past few days, and this morning Terry Murray was asked if there was a sense of urgency around his team…
MURRAY: “There’s definitely not only a sense of that, but there’s conversation about it. We don’t want to get into this `backing in’ to the playoffs. We want to be playing a good game and earn the right to be in there, and ready to go in the first round. That’s something that has to get established right now, and this is a good place to get it going. To me, when I go back to the Dallas game, I liked our first period and the way we came out and played and did the right things. We did a great job on the forecheck, and that’s the attitude that we need to get back, and start this game the right way tonight.”
Thanks Rich. Now I have Foreigner stuck in my head…

I’m almost convinced this team is just trying to position itself to play San Jose.

@Chris P. Bacon,
LOL. With our luck, this would be the season that SJ finally gets a backbone and goes all the way.

I’m beginning to think this whole “urgency” situation is a big part of the reason why they’re playing the way they are at this point. How about just relax and play your system? That might work, too.

For what its worth, the last time the Kings had a 3 game losing streak, they started a 9-game winning streak just two games later.

@markisonfire, wouldnt that make it a 5 game losing streak? Or do you mean 2 days later?

I don’t agree with the “backing in” thought, as far as getting into the playoffs. If you are in at the end of the season, it is because you earned it, even if it is because of the way that you played in October or November or even December. That is why a game in October can be just as important as a game in March. That having been said, there might be something to having momentum and my guess is that it is better to have a good push entering into the playoffs. Now is the time for that push.

@HawKings,
Would the term losing into the playoffs be a better term?

@runningman,
Making the playoffs period right now is better. I don’t care how we get there.

@HawKings, Yeah you are correct. Even though the Kings earned a playoff spot by doing well all year, if we get into the playoffs playing like this, we would go out in 4 games. But if we played like I think we can and get hot going into the playoffs I think we might actually be able to make some noise.

I think it doesn’t really matter how you finish as long as you are playing reasonably well. Losing close games is one thing, getting boo’ed off the home ice is another.

I would like to see them beat a non-playoff team tonight and then beat a playoff team tomorrow and things will be all good for at least a couple of days.
