Goalie plan/lines

Jonathan Quick will start in goal tonight and Jonathan Bernier, called up under emergency circumstances will back up Quick and will start tomorrow in Nashville. Terry Murray said Erik Ersberg has a strained back.

The forwards are expected to skate as follows tonight…

Smyth-Kopitar-Halpern
Frolov-Stoll-Brown
Modin-Handzus-Williams
Parse-Richardson-Simmonds

On defense, Matt Greene replaces Randy Jones, who has an elbow injury. Scratches are expected to be Clune, Ivanans, Drewiske and Jones. More from the morning skate to come…

    @SDgolfer,

    Yeah he played on the #1 line for a team that is 3 pts ahead of the worst team in the eastern conference. He only had 9g and 7a playing on that #1 line and has only had one point since the middle of January. Yeah he’s the scoring answer we need. Those are the types of numbers I’m looking for on my #1 line. What a joke.

    Halpern has done nothing to EARN his spot on the #1 line and I think this is part of what Dustin Brown is talking about when he says B.S.
    This musical chairs with the lines in order to find a fit with the team is ridiculous by TM. Modin and Halpern should be 4th liners along with Clune. Put Simmonds, Handzus, and Fro back together on the 3 line. Put Williams, Kopi, and Smyth back together for more than a period. Part of being prepared for a game is having familiarity with your line mates. It’s BS coming into every game with a different line combo.

    A coach changing his lines more often than he changes underwear is a coach that is second guessing himself. TM is showing a lack of confidence and this is translating into poor performances on the ice.

    And how about a little emotion behind the bench did you see when TM lost it on the roughing call on JJ in the Col game. The Kings came out and played with some real fire in the 2nd and 3rd after their coach showed some emotion. Being deadpan all the time isn’t going to help motivate these guys. Get in some faces and stop saying everything is fine because the only person that beleives it is TM.

    @justlu,

    I agree with not changing the lines every game…I’ve been playing hockey for 20 years now and having the same line mates that your comfortable with is huge…I know TM has a lot of experience but I’m not sure why he doesn’t let them work through it and keep em together…I’m not saying he’s doing a bad job, but sometimes the coaching staff needs to look in the mirror as well

    Halpern did spend time on the 1st unit in Tampa allong Lecavallier and St. Louis this season. From what I saw, he was able to create some options for Vinny and Marty to do work.

    At this point I don’t see the harm in this, given that the other line combos have not worked up to this point. As we all know, TM does like to make mid-game line adjustments.

    We’ve been winning all year long, and the second we start loosing some games the negativity comes out. Lets get some support going for our team! How about it?

    Thank-you Ersberg good timing on this “injury”!

    Quick, play better or find a nice seat on the bench and get comfortable.

    Halpern has been a 1st line player in the past and can be just as effective as Justin Williams. Murray likes to switch his line combos during the game as well and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Williams & Halpern switch spots. What this does though, is it puts other line combos together that have had success.

    Parse-Richardson-Simmonds, was the Kings best line during Smyth’s injury. Handzus & Modin have played well together. Williams is coming along very very slowly as was expected. Frolov, Stoll, Brown have had success in the past as well. Smyth & Kopitar are the 2 players on this team that can adapt.

    Going from 4th line to 1st line isn’t a surprise, Purcell did the same thing. Halpern hasn’t been any worse than Teddy.

    Jones – By far the worst d-man suddenly gets an elbow injury that is suddenly reported two days later and just when Greene is ready to come back.

    Ersberg – Shakey back up that rarley plays suddenly get a back injury, again reported days after he last played part of a game and after Bernier comes up and jumps over him to a starting spot and plays a good game and gets the win.

    It really isn’t beyond the scope of reality to think that EE really has an injury. Quick supposedly injured his back in practice over the Olympics. What you’re saying might be true, but I don’t see the need to cover it up. Who are they trying to fool?

    [Reply]

    Simmer Reply:

    I think they’re just trying to get around the call-up limitations. If it’s just a straight call-up, we lose one of our three remaining. If it’s an “emergency”, we get it for free. I suspect there are a lot of quote-unquote “injuries” this time of year, to justify short-term call-ups.

    Could be wrong…

    @Simmer

    Good point, I actually forgot about that. I wonder if there is any sort of process to declaring a player injured? Is it as simple as saying so-and-so is hurt and we need to do an emergency call up?

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

    @Simmer, I think that tone sucks. Even if it were completely fraudulent (and let me make it clear, I do not believe it is!), it goes best unsaid.

    Simmer Reply:

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?,

    I suspect it’s how the game is played. Again, it’s been a long time since we’ve had to worry about late-season maneuverings, so it’s just speculation. But I doubt they require a league physical every time a player gets “injured”…

    [Reply]

    variable Reply:

    @Simmer,

    why would any player who is fighting for his position fake an injury…?

    why would any player fake an injury at all…?

    how would a player who fakes an injury get the respect from his players and his coaching staff ever again…?

    why would anyone in any organization dig themselves into such a terrible situation with their players to the point where instead of being honest with one another, they would concoct some cockamanie scheme about an injury…?

    [Reply]

    Simmer Reply:

    @variable,

    I don’t think anyone is faking anything. I think they wanted to call Bernier up for the start, but they didn’t want to waste one of their limited late-season call-ups. So they tabbed Ersberg as “injured”.

    Pretending like this is “fraudulent” or “terrible” or “cockamamie” would be similar to a basketball coach whining about the other team fouling his players at the end of the game.

    “We were up by four, and the game should’ve been over. But they kept pretending to go for the ball, and fouling us on purpose! Those dishonest bastards!!”

    [Reply]

    variable Reply:

    @Simmer,

    i just don’t think players “fake” injuries…
    i just don’t think gm’s and coaches ask players to say that they are hurt in lieu of calling someone else up…

    maybe i’m ultra-naive when it comes to these situations…

    but ee played extremely well in reserve for quick the other night…and he gave us every indication that he was back to form…

    so why would we call up jb if ee wasn’t really hurt…?

    i just don’t think that dl/tm would do those things…i happen to believe that even though you are correct in saying that they probably want to save their three remaining call-ups, i don’t think that they devised a plan to accommodate it…

    and i do think making up injuries or stories…for any reason…is wrong, should not be tolerated by the league and those who partake in such actions should be heavily fined…

    Simmer Reply:

    You may be right. And I suspect there’s probably some period of time that an “injured” player must remain sidelined – like the injured reserves and disabled lists of the NFL and MLB.

    But honestly, if there’s a loophole, I’m sure teams exploit it. And if all of the other teams are exploiting it, then you put yourself at a disadvantage by being the only honest man.

    Again – it’s absolutely no different than the unintentional intentional fouls at the end of the basketball game. Truly honest coaches would never be able to come back in the last 30 seconds of a game…

    variable Reply:

    @Simmer,

    yr loophole point is closer to the truth…

    i think that we could get into a hair-splitting debate as to what is a flat-out fabricated story vs. an inkling of truth…

    but, to be fair, i understand why many would think that teams collude with their own players in situations where roster limits and actions are monitored or under regulation…

    now, if this was the playoffs, yr point probably becomes closer to the truth…

    i will say this, though, when the playoffs begin…there is more mystery and suspicion surrounding where a player’s injury is than the whereabouts of bin laden…

    i just want to believe that there is a standard of ethics and conduct that our organization holds itself up to…

    but yr probably right when you say that given the opportunity, many caches/gm’s would probably exploit any rule or caveat to their advantage…

    i just don’t think it pertains here…

    haha…that’s a good one…

    i can’t figure out why any coach wants to throw their own team’s equipment on the ice…

    if it breaks, it cost money…perhaps a players “lucky” stick…

    if i was a coach and i had a postal moment, i would probably go after the other team’s equipment…

    i would have a assistant equipment boy be on standby to poach their stash as soon as i gave the bat signal…

    it would definitely be original..!

    Maybe this is what Halpern needs to find his game and prove his worth. I don’t have a problem with it at all.

    Coaches change lines all the time. Sharks big line of Marleau-Thorton-Heatly got split into 2 different lines for a little, and now they are all on different lines.

    point being that a coach HAS to use all tools necessary when things aren’t going well.

    if it ain’t broke-don’t fix it…if it is broke-fix it

    I also like moving Halpern up with Kopi and Smyth. 2 pts are important but getting Halpern going is better for the BIG picture (playoffs)

    DL said it in his interview. We got Halpern but have no idea where or how to play him.
    This is his shot to contribute before the playoffs.
    If he still can’t get going, he’ll be viewing the games from above and someone else will ge the opportunity.

    Well that settles that issue with Ersberg. I Don’t really care, I just want Quick/Bernier to play lights out and win a couple of games for us.

    TM,
    you arernt getting it here…your top line needs to play together…Halbum isn’t the answer here…Simmonds or Richie are a much better fit if you have to continue to mess with lines…Against Minnesota you have no one against Scott and Boogard do you think it will be another game of manhandling? No one to stop them. greener is hurt but going to play as I said O’die is your 2nd best defenseman and hands are tied and Clune and Raitis are scratches… maybe the trainer will be the one to protect these guys. If you need that much scoring from your energy line you’re in deep trouble. turn in your keys!

  41. bmova says:

    I don’t why TM can’t be normal with his lines:

    Smyth – Kopi – Williams
    Richardson – Stoll – Brown
    Frolov – Handzus – Simmonds
    Miscellaneous – Miscellaneous – Miscellaneous

    Does it really matter who’s on the 4th line…NO…it hasn’t made a difference all year, and that’s when we’ve had the most success.

    [Reply]

    maraudking Reply:

    @bmova,

    4th lines are just as important. Granted those players may not get as much ice time, but they often serve as an energy line, or some kind of shutdown line. You need guys who can crash, bang, and create some kind of energy to take some pressure off of the top 6. A good solid 4th line can make the difference in a 7 game series.

    I don’t understand the point in calling up in my mind, the better goaltender, to sit on the bench, as our tired, struggling one has to swallow another friggin start. If Quick tears it up and shuts me up great, but I think if you can possibily earn yourself another start, Bernier did it in Dallas.
