    I thought we were so much closer to winning in the 4 on 4 portion of the OT, than in the shoot out. I was kind of wondering though it seemed like TM had set the shootout guys as Kopi, JJ, and Brown. Not that I think that’s the best 3, but hasn’t it been that for the last 5+ shootouts?

    @AK47, Have to agree with your comment on Smyth in the shootout…I think his stats are terrible there. But before anyone gets on my case, see my comments below…I think the Kings totally outplayed the Avs and are gearing up for the playoffs after these last 3 games and I think it will continue tomorrow. But there are many other choices for the shootout than Smyth.

    nykingfan Reply:

    @AK47,

    He hits the post and crossbar. Brown and Fro have had their chances during SO and neither has distinguished themselves. I might have gone with Doughty, but Smyth’s shot was as good as you could have hoped for, short of a goal.

    I’m surprised we came back. Surprised Eric didn’t let a goal in.

    Bone to pick

    Frolov shouldn’t be demoted, I can’t count how many times this year he gets game changing goals.

    Jones, Helpherm, Modin need to spend some time on the bench during OT.

    JJ and Drew should have had more ice time on the OT

    Overall, really happy LA got a point out of that one!

    [Reply]

    Deke'r Reply:

    @WWAMD, Yeah, after the first would’ve been real easy for the boys to just sit and watch the rest of that game go by, but they didn’t.

    I am with you on the OT rotation.
    I would even say JJ & DD shouldn’t be paired in the OT.
    Both are aggressive offensively there is just too much of a chance we will end up with a 2 on 1 (possibly with only a forward back) or 2 on none.

    Wonder if Ersberg gets the start vs St. Louis. Quick needs a break, and the rest of the team needs a kick in the rear end because they have been playing like crap the last few games. Tonight’s 3rd period was good…need to have 3 periods like that in a game.

  17. Nitrohockey says:

    EE played as well as someone can after coming in cold and not seeing any game time in almost 2 months. Can’t fault him as much as I fault the total collapse early on by the team that led to Quick getting pulled. The team battled back and we got a point that we probably didn’t deserve and that last year, we wouldn’t have gotten at all!

    [Reply]

    Mike C Reply:

    @Nitrohockey,

    Nitro I agree as far as Ersberg. He came in and did great. The Kings were a post away from sounding it to round 4. However, they did deserve the point. They worked their asses off in the 3rd period to keep the puck down low in the Av’s zone.

    [Reply]

    Nitrohockey Reply:

    @Mike C, Don’t get me wrong, they battled back like champions, just that steady line to the box early on was something that could get us in a deep hole and we wouldn’t have deserved the point. I got a bit overexcited after reading some of the posters looking to pin everything on EE. I should have edited my own post.

    [Reply]

    Mike C Reply:

    @Nitrohockey,

    Fair enough, I agree with that as well. It’s these slow starts that caused the penalties as the other team usually sets the tempo. Sometimes I feel we would be better off starting the game with spotting the other team a goal. You could definitely see the difference in urgency between the 1st and 3rd period.

  18. Mike C says:

    How can anyone complain? The Kings probably played their best 3rd period of the season, IMHO. We don’t need to go .500 to make it to the playoffs but got a very important point to keep pace and stay in 5th. Yea, Ersberg is rusty but he made some great saves to keep the Kings close in the first place.

    Nice job Kings and great effort to not give up when the 1st period was pretty much a disaster!!!!!

    [Reply]

    Mike C Reply:

    @Iceguy,

    Exactly. This is the effort that I want to see when they are not down a few goals to where they are forced to play that way. If they can translate that style of play into a 60 minute effort, they become a tough team for anyone to beat.

    @bmova,
    He should be used to it he did give a ton of solid performances after Cloutier gave up 3 or 4 goals in 5 minutes only for the Kings to tie it then lose it late a couple of years ago. His first year he had a .937 save percentage and a even or losing record. I’m still sticking with the theory that Cloutier is Crawford’s illegitimate son.

    Its not important to argue about. Kings Magic # is 11 basically minus any missed Points by Calgary, and minus any points gained by the Kings. The way things are going I would rather play SJ than Phx in round 1. I also want to see Van #3 and Nash # 6 so one gets taken out.

Ill be available for tomorrows game for sure.

    King John Reply:

    @#1faninvegas,

    Quick wasn’t pulled because of how he played. They were down 3-1 because of taking to many penalties and two of Colorado’s goals were directed in by Kings’ skates (Johnson and Doughty!).

    TM wanted to shake things up and get the game moving in a different direction and it worked.

    nykingfan Reply:

    @#1faninvegas,

    They played a great 25 minutes…3rd period and OT
    They had a double minor and 3 minors in the 1st period. The last minor was a brutal call by the refs.
    He pulled Quick because he was a little slow in reacting to loose pucks in front of the net and was beaten on a one timer short side with no screen in front. He should have had it. He wasn’t terrible, but not great either. EE came in and did a good job. He wasn’t very busy, but kept the team in the game so they could mount a comeback.

    Fro started out on 4th line again, but got involved in the action and by the end of the night, was one of the better forwards. Kopitar and Fro were the best out there.

    All in all, a nice point to get on the road.

    Hard game to swallow, but you can’t deny the Kings were the better team. Our 5-on-5 was good, but those unlucky bounces hurt us in the end. Don’t think it was Quick’s fault either. I’m sure TM pulled him so he wouldn’t be exhausted for the next game. Ersberg played very well. I thought we would of want it in OT the way we were playing. I’m more than ok with the one point. More importantly, the Kings outplayed the Avs the whole game aside from when they were killing off those penalties. Not to mention that two goals went off skates.

    One problem…OD’s penalty was so incredibly dumb that I worry about his mental abilities…what the F was that cross check all about? He did the same thing a couple of nights ago.

    The Kings are showing that they are gearing up for the playoffs. Of course they have to continue to play as they did tonight. THey had jump and were making some nice passes…had some nice chances in the OT. Also, Quick is rested for tomorrows game.

I love Quick, don’t get me wrong, and I agree we need him out there, but at the same time, if he is burning out, let him rest with his wife and new kid for awhile, and let Bernie, and Ersberg finish the season up. Gives him the chance to work on his game, and get ready to be totally awesome in the playoffs. Who knows, maybe a two week break would be good for him, and he could end up leading us all the way. Once again, poor officiating was the difference in the game–that and the panic by Murray, taking out the guy who would have won the shootout.

    The minor at the end of the 1st period was brutal. I guess the double minor was a bad call because of Quincy’s stick coming up, but that’s almost an impossible call to make without replay.

    Also don’t agree with the idea of pulling Quick lost the game for us. Not that Quick was good or bad, but the change was a good thing. They really tightened up defensively in front of EE.

    The shootout? I also was secretly hoping he would put Quick back in, but there’s no coach in the NHL that would have done that, and if they did, they would be an ex-coach if it backfires.

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, He didn’t panic. Every coach in the NHL will do this to shake up the team when it’s no the goaltender’s fault.

    I didn’t think any one call was that horrible, but they added up, just as they did in the previous game, and with the tip-ins by defending Kings, that made it a lot worse. Once again, though, the Kings hung in there and scrapped. That’s a good sign.

    I’m not sure pulling Quick really made much of a difference. I’d have to go back to the end of the first and review, but I thought it was the intermission more than anything. That was the chance to “reset.”

    Again, it’s nothing on Ersberg; it’s just that Quick has the shootout thing going. I also agree with you that I wouldn’t have put him in for the shootout after Ersberg kept the Kings in the game to battle back for two periods. I know Ersberg felt insulted when he lost a start he thought he was going to get (to Bernier, and I think the right move), but I think it WOULD have been a bit of an insult to pull him for the shootout after all that.

    No argument from me on either point.

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, My opinion…the calls on OD and Johnson were terrible. The double minor to Richardson, though it was the wrong call, I can’t fault the ref…nobody could see that it was Quincy’s stick lifting Richardson’s without slow motion.

    @mrbrett7, I fault them the least for the double-minor. You have to control your stick, and I guess that means even if someone lifts it for you. It’s kinda like the silly thing where someone runs into you from behind in the car, and you’re responsible for hitting the guy in front of you afterward. It sucks, but what can you do?

    I disagree with Jim Fox and the thought of giving the coaches a “challenge” to overturn calls like those. He brought up the NFL, but in the NFL you can’t overturn a penalty.
    As lousy as the calls were, I like the human element in sports officiating. Mistakes always seem to even out over time.

    @nykingfan, I’d have to agree with you (didn’t get to see the Kings broadcast here in Colorado) overall. In particular, I don’t think the NHL can learn much from the way the NFL handles penalties. I think the NHL does a much more credible job.

    Jim Fox clearly said that he did NOT support a challenge, but only brought it up because it has been discussed.

    Bottom line on shootouts is you have to score more than one. YOu can’t rely on your goaltender like they have all season on Quick to be perfect every game.

    Good game by EE, and the Kings in general. Some bad calls but some other undisciplined play that led to penalties. Great jump all game. Frolov was a beast last night and I hope they keep him off the 4th line. He looked good with Smyth on that one shift especially. They had a ton of chances.

    you’re correct. He brought it up but didn’t give much of an opinion either way.
