I was at the game. Never seen a crowd so electric and waiting on his every move. That building exploded when he scored.

Remember that night very well. Took a date – a very lovely woman from jamaica – who had never been to a hockey game. Tried to explain early on the meaning of that night for NHL, Gretzky, Kings…the record of 802 goals if Gretzky scored.

Well, Gretz did score. Place went nuts. Pandemonium. I looked over at Angela and she just had this confused look of “what’s the big deal?” She didn’t have a c-l-u-e what it was all about. Can’t blame her. Not her fault.

Only then did I realize that I’d totally wasted a valuable ticket to a monumental game on someone who would/could never appreciate the artistic poetry that was Gretzky. But I sure liked the moment.

@BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy, you would think. Actually we went out 3 or 4 times. The hockey game didn’t click because she just didn’t dig the sport. That’s okay.

Can anyone explain to me why the Ducks are getting full HD Fox Sports coverage for their road trip to Canada while the Kings cannot even get a televised game?

    Extremely odd.

    Gizmo Reply:

    @Jonathan,
The Ducks didn’t get any Canadian games broadcast earlier in the year either. Looks like a case of FSW expecting the Ducks to be doing better at this time of the year. Ooopppsss!! :)

I was at the game, was only 12. I taped it at home also and I still have that VHS and the ticket stub. Probably the most vivid memory I have of being at any kings games over the years . . . up there with going to the Stanley Cup Finals games against Montreal.

That evening was intense. One of the moments I am truly blessed to have witnessed with own eyes. My 10 yr old son plays roller hockey in the west valley and asks me what Gretzky was like. I told him he is from another planet the likes of which will never be seen again.

The only thing that could have capped off that great evening was a win. Vancouver won that game.

I was there and will never forget it. I was 15 years old. I can’t believe it was that long ago because I remember it like it was yesterday. Unbelievable. Thanks for sharing this, Rich. Funny enough, I was randomly thinking about it just last week, not realizing that we were coming up on the 16th anniversary.

Section 32, row 14, seat 10 was where I was. I still remember that game, I was 13 years old at the time. While I was so excited to see Gretzky break that record I was still heart broken because the team itself wasn’t very good, especially after being one year removed from being screwed in the finals. 16 years later I’m still praying to see LA back in the finals but I will always cherish the memories of watching #99

That goal happened right in front of me at the Forum. I was in Section 16, row T. Unfortunately with the move to Staples, I can no longer afford tickets downstairs, but I will never forget that game. the place was going bonkers every time the puck was on his stick, just waiting to explode!

Staples will have that kind of energy agin next month when the playoffs return!

I remember watching the replays on tsn in the morning the next day. I was 8.
Living in canada it was hard to watch games when I was young so I could only watch when they played in the playoffs. I remember the montreal series very well and that year is why I became a kings fan!! great memories!

I was at the game, but left after the 2nd period to go play a game of my own. I was just getting to the rink when Nick called the goal on the radio broadcast. At least my future wife stayed at the Forum to watch a real hockey player. I still have my ticket stub and can say I was at the game, but didn’t see the goal. :(

I find myself less and less nostalgic about Gretzky all the time. He was amazing at the time, and I still remember how scary it was for the Kings to play against him after the deal, but on the whole, one visit to the finals really signifies a failure to be consistently competitive. I don’t think dealing for him and failing to build a solid organization, at the time, are unrelated. Add to that the failures around him since then, and any nostalgia is very tarnished.

There were some fun times, though, including the Campbell Cup Game 7 in 1993.

Probably the second greatest game I had the oppurtunity to witness live, the first being “The Miracle on Manchester” game being the first live hockey game I ever attended. I’m hoping to witness alot more of these types of games here in the near future. How sweet that will be…..

Final score in that game: 6-3 Canucks

Kings’ record as of March 23, 1994: 28-34-11

Kings’ final record: 27-45-12, 16 points out of a playoff spot and 5 points behind the expansion Quacks

What a horrible season that was! And all of it in the 10 months following the first and only trip the Kings have yet made to the Finals…

It’s funny because I was 8 years old at the time of this goal and a few of the popular people at my school were into hockey. In an attempt to fit in I decided to become a hockey fan. Since I had decided to make myself a fan I was a little torn about who would be my favorite team, the Kings or the Ducks. I want to say this was one of the first 10 or so hockey games I had ever watched. I can recall thinking after the goal, the Ducks have no history, and are not very good. The Kings on the other, well they had just been to the Finals the year before, and now they have the greatest player in the history of the game! How on Earth could I go wrong being a Kings fan, surely this team be the best the the league for years to come.

Look back over the last 16 years, even though I called it wrong, I’m thrilled to be a Kings fan!
