Feb. 2 game notes

Here are some notes after last night’s game… – The Kings have won seven consecutive games, one short of the franchise record set in 1991-92 and 1972-73. This is the Kings’ first seven-game winning streak since Feb. 18-March 2, 1991. – The Kings, at 34-19-3, have 71 points. That’s the second-highest number of points, after [...]

Tonight's game story (Feb. 2)

Here’s my LAKings.com game story from tonight, with stats and video included. Thanks for reading! Kings beat Rangers 2-1

Murray postgame quotes

Terry Murray’s postgame thoughts… (on the win…) MURRAY: “That’s a real hard game, and it was a tremendous effort. The players take that into the room at the start of the game. They understand that there’s a responsibility to come out and play hard. We knew we would have a good crowd here tonight, and [...]

Smyth postgame quotes

Ryan Smyth’s postgame thoughts… (on winning the first home game after the long road trip…) I think we came out, right off the hop, pretty good. Obviously there were all the scenarios, with the long flight, but I thought that we responded really well right away. Obviously they caught up to our speed and it [...]

Greene postgame quotes

Matt Greene’s postgame thoughts… (on the Kings’ defensive effort…) GREENE: “I think we did a good job of keeping them to the outside and not giving them too many rebounds. That was maybe not the most exciting game, but it works, and that’s what we’ve got to do here if we want to be successful [...]

FINAL: Kings 2, Rangers 1

The Kings’ winning streak has been extended to seven games, and they remain three points clear of Colorado for fifth place in the West. More from the locker room ASAP…

Kings 2, Rangers 1

New York pulled within one goal with 2:37 remaining in the third period. Erik Christensen took the puck up the right side and fed a backhand pass to the front of the Kings’ net. Marian Gaborik narrowly beat Matt Greene to the front of the net and knocked the puck past Quick.

Kings 2, Rangers 0

The Kings took a 2-0 lead with 8:46 remaining in the third period. Dustin Brown came up with the puck in the neutral zone and showed great patience by holding onto it, as Ryan Smyth went to the front of the net. Brown sent a soft, short pass to Smyth, who beat Lundqvist with a [...]

End of second: Kings 1-0

A couple strong saves by Lundqvist prevented the Kings from holding a two-goal lead. Shots were 11-8 Kings in the second period.

Kings 1, Rangers 0

The Kings finally found a way to beat Lundqvist…with a shorthanded goal. After Dustin Brown broke up a pass in the Kings’ zone, Anze Kopitar started a 2-on-1, had room, kept the puck and scored on a wrist shot with 3:17 remaining in the period.

End of first: 0-0

Shots were only 5-4 Kings in the period, but the Kings clearly got the better of the scoring chances and played well. Lundqvist, however, was very much on top of his game.

Under pressure

Need to catch up on today’s news and notes? Here’s my LAKings.com notebook for the day… Kings notebook (Feb. 2) Also, here’s what Terry Murray said today about pressure. The Kings are back in a situation, as they were in mid-December, in which they’re having success and getting widespread attention. The first time, they didn’t [...]

Standing pat on D

Terrry Murray talked, during the road trip, about the likelihood of Davis Drewiske returning to the Kings’ lineup Sunday at New Jersey. It didn’t happen, and barring a last-minute change-of-mind, it won’t happen tonight either. What happened? Well, in Murray’s mind, it’s as simple as saying that the Kings keep winning. Pairings tonight are expected [...]

Jokinen good to go

The Kings will get a look at the new-look Rangers tonight. Recently acquired center Olli Jokinen will be in the lineup tonight, on a line with Marian Gaborik. Here’s what Terry Muray said this morning about facing the Rangers… MURRAY: “The challenge is to bring the same physical intensity and mental intensity to the game [...]

Bringing it home

The Kings are 7-0 in their last seven road games and 3-4 in their last home games, a disparity that is impossible to completely explain. It’s not uncommon for a team, particularly a young team, to have some road success and develop a “road mentality,” but it usually balances out over time.  In the Kings’ [...]

Tuesday skate update

Raitis Ivanans and Brandon Segal will be back in the lineup tonight, with Peter Harrold and Teddy Purcell expected as the healthy scratches. Terry Murray said defenseman Davis Drewiske is ready to go, but that Murray is hesitant to put him back in the lineup, with the Kings on a winning streak, simply to make [...]
