With Canada’s 3-2 overtime victory over the United States, Drew Doughty became the first player to win Olympic gold while representing the Kings. Adam Deadmarsh and Aaron Miller won silver playing for the United States in 2002, and four Kings have won bronze medals. Congrats also to the Kings’ silver medalists, Dustin Brown, Jack Johnson and Jonathan Quick.
Looking forward to Wednesday

Both teams showed us something. The USA team showed us the ability to play with composure and pride, from the drop of the first puck to the final heartbreaking horn. The Canada team showed the champion’s persistence to fight through adversity, not once or twice, but repeatedly, even through the final overtime. In a tournament that had no easy games after the preliminary round, these teams showed us the hearts of champions, as did many of the teams that came up just a little short along the way.

@Kings Fan In Idaho, thanks! I keep thinking back to previous olympic games, particularly Nagano, in which neither the Canadian team or American team were particularly graceful in disappointment. The US team did so well to show the poise necessary to avoid disappointment until the very end, and the Canadian team not only handled theirs with grace, but overcame them.

It’ll be very interesting to see what happens between now and Sochi, in 2014. Sure, it won’t heat up until summer of 2013, but the question of NHL, the KHL, and who goes, etc., will certainly come up repeatedly between now and then.

Congrats to both teams, that was one exciting game. The young Kings acquitted themselves very well and I’m happy to see no one was badly injured in the entire tournament, for any team.
I have to say, some players I’ve never gotten to see play a lot impressed the hell out of me with their ability to excel in games entirely manned by top players. They just stood out amongst the stand outs. I was especially impressed with Erik Johnson, Zak Parise, Ryan Kessler, Ryan Suter, Paul Stasny, Patrick Kane (he is amazing!), Duncan Keith, Corey Perry (as much as it pains me to say that :p ) and of course Ryan Miller – he was one steely-eyed netminder throughout the games.
It might be a little hard getting used to plain old NHL games now, but GO KINGS!

Great game. Because of the nature of sudden death, it was a tough loss to swallow, but you have to realize that we just watched the two best teams in the world battle it out, and that silver for the US is no disappointment even though it might feel like that. Looking back, the most amazing thing about the tournament was the level of competition, and the level of the Kings’ players in that competition. How proud must DL and TM be to see the players they choose to depend on used in the same capacity on teams with players hand-picked because they’re the best in the world!
We knew what Drew could do, and now the world knows. We knew what Zeus could do, and even though it was a “goodbye” tour for most of the Slovakian team, they leaned on him as a rock.
We knew what Brownie can do, and he showed he’ll be as steady in the toughest of contests as he is for the Kings this season.
We knew what Quick could do, and though he never got the chance to show the rest of the world, he got to feel the excitement of the highest level of competition possible, and he’ll be rested and as sharp as possible in goal.
We weren’t all very sure what Jack Johnson could do, but he impressed us all by showing poise and confidence, in the biggest of games and under the most pressure imaginable.
They’ve all made us proud and shown the world that they’re the best of the best. Now they can come home and join their team, and show them once more. This team that few had above second-to-last in division–that few had even making the playoffs–won’t just make the playoffs, but will make us all proud once more.

Oh, and, I could talk about a couple Ducks players that I was not impressed with, but there were certainly others with whom I was very impressed, including Bobby Ryan, Ryan Miller, Brian Rafalski, Zach Parise and the always-dependable Chris Drury.
On the “other side,” I couldn’t have been more impressed with Shea Weber and Duncan Keith. There were certainly bigger names–even from the same NHL team, but I don’t think anyone played better. I think the defensive players, with some obvious exceptions, were the strength of the Canadian roster.

@AK47,
The better team won???
Of course you have to say that to shake off the fear of imagining you are not the best, but you were still outscored on your home ice over two games by the “lesser team” as you put it. The game winner was a lucky goal as Miller was setting up for a poke check. I don’t see how anyone could say there was a difference between these teams.
The USA is proud of Team USA and the fact that we took game 1, and pushed till the “Canadian Dream Team” to the limit, all on Canadian ice and in front of an overwhelmingly home-ice advantage with one of the youngest teams in the tourny.
I have to praise the Canadian fans who not only cheered their gold medal winners, but also many of the runners-up. Also, Scott Nedermier for praising Team USA afterwards and saying we battled hard and gave them all they could handle.
Crosby, on the other hand, proved what a tool he is when he said “they didn’t expect it to be that close”. Very disrespectful from a “tom cruise-ish” ego maniac who was far from Canada’s best player over the final 3 games.
I’d say Doughty was one of the best for Canada with his skill and tough play.
In the end, Canada was lucky to capitalize on small errors by Rafalski in the first period and overtime, so saying the better team won is totaly out of line with what happened on the ice.
Great game by both teams and USA fans KNOW that there is little separation between the 2 best teams in this tournament.
Canada won gold and broke our hearts, but this one shows that the Americans can play with anyone and will one day have gold around there necks again.

@AK47,
If not for a lucky bounce or a puck that stopped at the line you would be crying in your beer.
Team USA was not projected to be “the team to beat”, and yet, going into the final game, they had a better record than the two that were supposed to be. They did it without the advantages of having a goalie playing on his home ice as well as lines and defensive pairings that play regularly together. What this, the youngest team in these olympic hockey games, did was incredible and they deserve to be praised for an incredible accomplishment.

He also played his butt off, but its gotta be hard to overcome 5 straight power plays. Sir: you missed some of the implied points.
we haven’t won the World Baseball Classic and probably won’t SINCE it is played at our Major Leagues Spring Training time and the other countries are finishing their seasons. that is a hugh difference, and if you followed that discussion, it has been noted that the classic should be done at the end of our World Series, or Playoff schedule to make the timing of participants more equal to their preparation. maybe you haven’t, but i am not the same player at training, trying to hit curve balls, fast balls, and change ups, until the season got going and timing caught up.
Secondly, you missed the point on hockey participation in the US and in Canada. we may have the same numbers, but our BEST athletes have more choices to participate and with that, in our culture, like your sport culture is heavily connected to ice hockey, we have athletes making big money in alot of sports, tennis, track and field, swimming, auto racing, now soccer, real football, etc., is drawing a number of quality athletes into some many sports. my take is, that in Canada, it is the drawing the best of the best, since it is a heritage and intwined into the sporting culture of that country. you won the gold, fair and square, we made you work hard for it, didn’t seem to get any respect for it, you should have won the gold, and you are the only country that could have fielded 2 legitimate medal teams. i can’t see you arguing that point. your second team would be favored over everybody except Team Canda 1, Russia, Sweden, and perhaps Finland, since they won Silver in Turino, if i remember. Certainly would be better than Finland, knowing the players in the NHL, and even Sweden, perhaps.
Thirdly, my entire emphasis was our effort should not be overlooked by failing to win the Gold, since we don’t emphasis hockey in this country, and the plain fact is, here, it is considered a minor sport when compared to the Big 3, and those 3 draw the vast majority of our best athletes. maybe you have to read that sentence over to see what i am saying. when i think of all the world class athletes we produce and placing them in hockey, if that was the main focus of kids when choosing sports to play when growing up, it is one impressive list, to long to include from all the sports to list here.
i am praising my countries team and effort and insecurities from external sources will not detract from it. i didn’t say a negative thing about canada, but i am noticing in publish reports, over the years, alot of America bashing, when it is unwarranted and not a product of initiated comments from this side.
