TSN’s Bob McKenzie — a man who knows — is reporting that Brandon Segal has been claimed by the Dallas Stars. In that case, Rich Clune is expected to be recalled by the Kings — officially from Ontario — today, and likely will be at the morning skate this morning…
Well, that’s too bad. I didn’t mind Segal at all and I wish him all the best on his new team… expect when he’s playing us.
[Reply]
Are you serious??? I liked him and he loved playing here.
[Reply]
cue the “price is right” sound effect when someone chooses the wrong price…
[Reply]
Well all the people who have been waiting for Clune finally get there wish. Hope this was all worth it.
[Reply]
So is that the big news of the day? Or is there something else in the works?
[Reply]
Bummer
[Reply]
That was a stupid move
[Reply]
I dont see why the Kings would waive Segal to bring up a guy like Clune. Both of them are gritty, in your face players and Segal has more experience at the pro level. Dumb move IMO
[Reply]
Hopefully this is the only news of the day…
[Reply]
So, let me get this straight. DL would rather have Purcell than a big, hard nosed, gritty winger that can actually play? Ridiculous
[Reply]
It would be interesting to hear the story behind the move if anyone’s willing to give it. Appeared to me that Segal was a pretty good piece on the 4th line and occasional 3rd line duties.
[Reply]
uh oh…someone called this on the previous post, but I don’t remember who…looks like Clune was sent to Ontario, so that he would be in the area and ready to be called up once the roster spot was available.
COULD THIS MEAN WE’RE NOT MAKING A TRADE?
I don’t know if I should be happy or upset…??????
[Reply]
That opens one spot (Clune)and takes $525k off the books for next year.
Now what????
[Reply]
boring…..
[Reply]
This SUCKS!!!
[Reply]
Too bad. I hope he does well for his new team.
[Reply]
eh…
[Reply]
Bummer. i liked him and was hoping he would stay with the Kings organization.
On another note, can the Kings please pick up Donald Brashear on waivers and waive Ivanans? Pretty please?
[Reply]
Since Lauri Tukonen didnt work out for Dallas, I guess Segal is second attempt by Dallas to get something back for Clune.
[Reply]
Khanon…do you remember my last plea to you? Please keep it in mind. I appreciate it.
[Reply]
Just say NO to Brashear. What? He is not better than Ivanans.
[Reply]
maybe it’s a preemptive move…by the start of tomorrow, we should know for sure…
[Reply]
Le sigh
[Reply]
Why would we want Brashear when we already have a guy in Ivanans that kicks a$$ and takes less penalties/suspensions than Brashear.
[Reply]
Interesting move, as Segal played hard every shift.
But at the end of the day, we are not a Cup contender this year, and losing Segal or adding Whitney or “insert other rental here” doesn’t change that.
[Reply]
you guys are seriously talking about donald brashear…???
some of you want to incorporate ufc and mma in everything you do…
i don’t understand where many of you “fight first, lose games later” beliefs come from…
unreal…(!)
[Reply]
That’s a HUGE no on Brashear.
[Reply]
Sebastian,
That would be awesome.
[Reply]
Dallas, really? any word if there were multiple claims? I’m surprised, I thought they were deeper than that but I guess they could lose both Modano and Lehtinen next year.
[Reply]
a newspaper article out of Carolina sez….
President and General Manager Jim Rutherford says he expects to trade Matt Cullen before the Olympic roster freeze, which runs Feb. 12-28, and Ray Whitney after the break but before the March 3 trade deadline.
[Reply]
i can see where this thread is leading…next…(!)
[Reply]
Lame. I take Segal over Clune any day,.Clune will do nothing but get his face pounded in. I have been waiting patiently for 3 weeks for the big playoff push aquisition. This is getting annoying. What happened to throwing the dog a bone DL? I come refresh this page 400x a day, waiting for the announcement that we improved the team, but no. We need more than what we have if we even expect to pull out of the 1st round. What is DL doing? Anybody who says they like this team totally “as is” is crazy.
[Reply]
This can’t possibly be as stupid as it appears. It’s not like DL doesn’t know what he’s doing. My hope is that more will be revealed…
Good luck Brandon!
[Reply]
I don’t understand. Why was Segal waived? I guess we have too many 4th liners?
[Reply]
Interesting move. Not sure what this adds but I guess we’ll see how it shakes out in the next 24 hours since there’s a freeze after tomorrow at noon correct?
[Reply]
I would much rather have waived Purcell than Segal. Yes, he can be replaced but I am sad to see him go. He at least did what was asked of him unlike Teddy P. and has probably been the best 4th line player of the year not named Richardson. He also had the occassional greater role in which I thought he did well while playing with Frolov and Handzus.
I am glad for the chance to get to see Clune, but not at the expense of losing the big body of Segal.
[Reply]
I didn’t have a problem with Segal. I hope Clune can fill his spot without too much disruption.
Thanks for the update Rich.
[Reply]
variable-
I’m with you. Everyone have fun at the game tonight. Wish I could be there.
One last note to consider. Heidi made a report, right after the Kovi deal ended, where it sounded like DL was going to hold off on possible trades til after the Olympic break. Just food for thought.
[Reply]
A certain Dancing Fellow who goes by the handle of CBGB and blogs as Matthew Barry reported yesterday that Clune was being recalled.
Looks like he was right and perhaps has some sources of his own?
[Reply]
Good for Segal, but I was really hoping he’d end up back in Manchester, we need bodies.
[Reply]
So Segal gets picked up, Clune goes from Manchester to Ontario to los angeles. all is less than 24 hrs..? If i am not mistaken Clune is 5’10″ seems to be a little small if you ask me.. Segal was a great player, worked the cycle well with fro and zus. And segal had some size. But why dallas…Oi
[Reply]
brashear is having a terrible season though they liked him here in DC…
the loss of Segal is disappointing. I agree that they should have sent Purcell down instead. It makes absolutely no sense to keep Purcell in favor of Segal.
[Reply]
HA!!!!
[Reply]
Geez, I can’t believe I waited up just to hear this. I must need therapy.
Ah well, threw in Eric Clapton’s DVD Live on Tour 2001 and feeling a little better.
[Reply]
OH NO! We lost a guy who played 8 minutes a night! NO! We’ll never win another game ever! Common, I liked Segal but he was a role player. I wish him the best of luck wherever he goes but he wasn’t a huge cog in the machine. He didn’t even really get in hard on the forecheck often enough for me.
And for the people calling this stupid, really? Because you’d rather lose Purcell it makes this stupid? That’s a good deal of hyperbole.
[Reply]
Or as someone pointed out yesterday, if you throw out enough stuff at the wall with a big enough spread, sooner or later you’re bound to hit something.
[Reply]

[Reply]
Please, Segal was not that good. Anyone can be brought in to bang some bodies. The guy really couldnt pass, was a lousy skater and he doesnt/cannot fight. I’d rather have a pest that will fight which in the future might render Ivanans worthless and the Kings can get rid of him.
[Reply]
Contreras79-
This team “as is” just got off a 9 game win streak. Last I checked that pretty darn good.
[Reply]
I really don’t get all the hype about Segal. He was an average player that threw the odd hit and took a few shifts during the game to give our other 3 lines a rest. Besides that hit on Jovo, can anyone remember anything he actually did that stood out? I can’t. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t mind the guy, but he’ll be EASY to replace. Not sure why everyone is so upset that we lost a 4th liner on waivers..
[Reply]
Best of luck Segal.
[Reply]
@Dominic Lavoie,
Barry usually gets the Manchester news right. Other rumors and “news” is up for debate since most of it can and will never be proven.
[Reply]
I thought I read that Ivanans was going to be a UFA. If that is true, dumping Segal (a much better player) makes no sense at all.
[Reply]

[Reply]
McKenzie report…..Jeff Carter going from Philly to Vancouver. With DL’s Philly connections you think he would have had an inside track. Well he got Jones…thanks a lot.
[Reply]
if we pick up Whitney [likely] looks like it’ll be
after the Oly break….
[Reply]
I’m too lazy to look it up, but do we get any sort of compensation from Dallas??
It seems to me like we might have been able to at least trade Segal for a pick, albeit a late rounder.
Then we could have thrown that pick in a trade package…..
[Reply]
Yawn…
[Reply]
AZKING…
sorry you can’t make it…always enjoy reading yr point of views…:)
[Reply]
Why would anyone keep Segal over Purcell. Segal is a dime a dozen guy. Purcell has raw skill that hasnt translated in the NHL yet. Silly to give up a guy with much higher upside.
[Reply]
Edwood, Ivanans is a UFA after this season. The Kings have Westgarth in Manchester who will most likely take Ivanans’ spot if he is not re-signed.
[Reply]
Ghost of Jack Kent Cooke-
Carter was not traded to Van. He’s going there to be a replacement if Getzlaf can’t play for Canada

As the saying goes “don’t judge the cook until the entire meal has been served”.
[Reply]
You guys have to think bigger picture. You don’t know what Dean is working on. Clune is a safety valve at LW for the forth line. This will give him some experience at the NHL level. Segal is a RW, and although I liked his size, he needed to contribute more in controlling the tempo of the game and keeping control of the puck. No way Ivanans steps foot on the ice for one minute in the playoffs. They need a LW fourth liner with some grit and at least a little bit of skill and contribute. Maybe Dean is working on a veteran with size and some skill for the RW foruth line. Any Stanley Cup run is a brutal ride that takes a lot of depth due to injuries and fatigue. You needs four lines that can contribute. And although Ethan Moreau is a left wing, Edmonton is in town and I wouldn’t be shocked if he was wearing Kings colors before the break.
[Reply]
Man, I wish I didn’t recant what I said yesterday lol..

BTW did it occur to anyone that Rich may have meant a move for Clune from Ontario to L.A.? Just a thought. Night all. Long drive in the morning.
OK, I gotta hit the road. See you at the game.
[Reply]
Now my Segal jersey is useless.
[Reply]
I would guess DL didn’t expect Segal to get claimed or he probably wouldn’t have waived him. Either that or Dallas knew Segal was part of a pending trade and they claimed him to block it. Either way I’d guess there’s some surprise in the Kings front office this morning.
[Reply]
Have faith in DL.
[Reply]
I’ll give Clune credit, he does hustle on the ice that’s for sure. I wouldn’t expect a ton from him other than pissing off the other team big time, going to the box, hopefully someone from the other team will be joining him. This could be exactly what the Kings are looking for from Cluner though. It certainly is quite entertaining watching him flip his lid though.
[Reply]
Brashear??? How would he ever fit into the chemistry of this team?
I haven’t been a fan of some of the moves, Sully, Crawford, and Cloutier come to mind. You could almost throw in the 6 million dollar per year deal they gave Blake. Overall however, DL has put together a team we can be proud of.
[Reply]
tantrum-
the only thing i recall about segal is that he took some rather dumb penalties from time to time. played hard, but not necessarily well.
[Reply]
The Kings are not the first team that Segal has worn out his welcome with in a relatively short time. In any case, he was drafted in 2002 and has barely made a mark in the NHL, so he’s much more suspect than prospect.Perhaps he’s got personality issues and is a locker room cancer?
[Reply]
Come on now everyone… Segal was basically a mediocore warm body that every single team has one of. I am not really affected at all by this move.
[Reply]
PAUL/OX…
that’s a pretty good observation…definitely something that could have taken place…
[Reply]
I think this shows how much depth the Kings have when other teams want your left overs.
[Reply]
Well, Bob Miller called him “Ryan Segal” shortly after he scored his first NHL goal anyway. Segal was ok but he is a replaceable role player.
Anyone thinking that middleweight (I’m being generous) Clune can replace Raitis, one of the most feared men in the league, is sorely misguided. Just because someone is willing to fight, doesn’t mean that all fighters are interchangable, people.
[Reply]
Hey, Dancing Boy: It’s time for a reappearance to stimulate the crowd. How about it? We need some fun again.
[Reply]
Segal was a fourth liner and always will be. Easily replaceable. I think we all spend a little too much time worrying about guys who only play 4 min a game.
As someone mentioned already, DL knows what he’s doing. Just sit back and relax.
[Reply]
I enjoyed watching Brandon Segal play. He has good size and he’s strong. He is the type of player that can be used as a role player. Segal was always able to score in the minors, but not at the NHL level.
But let’s not forget, Segal lacks the game-to-game consistency that is needed to get consistent ice time in the NHL. Dallas got themselves a good reserve winger.
I’m still drinking the kool-aid DL.
[Reply]
Haha….I made the same mistake as Ghost of Jack Kent Cooke at first glance. Silly headlines…
[Reply]
Why are there people trashing this move? Segal is a dime a dozen and not a factor if we win or lose
[Reply]

[Reply]
Most of us don’t know how these things work. Ya gotta admit, at first blush the only thing we’ve done so far is give Segal away for …. errr … nothing.
ITOH I am still drunk on the DL Kool-Aid and feel is the first piece of domino deal(s).
[Reply]
Chris, I don’t think it’s being “trashed” but it’s confusing until you see what the intended replacement is. Just losing a player to waivers for nothing would be a curious move.
[Reply]
You people are crying over letting Segal go? He’s making $525k season and is a 4th line player at best? We have a crap load of these guys in the minors with more skill that are just now ready to make the jump to the big club.
If this team is to go deep in the playoffs your 4th line players need to contribute ever night. Segal was big and played the body well and that’s great during a very long regular season…But what does that equate to in the playoffs? A WASTED SPOT!
Hopefully we see Parse/Moller/Purcell/Clune and maybe a few other surprises from Manchester interviewing for those valuable spots over the remaining 20+ games.
This is what teams do to get ready for the playoffs. DL will add someone (Whitney or ?) bring up some new blood from Manchester aka Kris Kontos and see what they can do. This is standard stuff people!

I met Dancing Boy a few times. He was a pretty nice guy and he seemed to have a connection with Kings management back in those days when he was around all the time.

[Reply]
Variable Esa was the freaking man in his day. Him blowing kisses to guys to piss them off is one of my favorite memories of that guy.
[Reply]
Well, I for one hate to see Segal go. He may not have been the best player in the league, but at least he showed some grit on the fourth line. With Purcell, I haven’t seen either grit or glitter. And with this move happening today, even if there is a trade, the player who gets traded here certainly won’t make it in time for tonight’s game.
So, I guess it is Clune on the fourth line tonight. Unless it’s Purcell.

Quisp! Calling Quisp!
Please give us some insight on the contracts involved here. Not sure but maybe Purcell and Segal have different contracts that allow/don’t allow certain waiver procedures.
Someone also mentioned yesterday that keeping Purcell could mean he is destined to be moved in a trade? I wouldn’t mind that at all, but if that is the case, couldn’t the Kings have done the same with Segal – packaged him in a deal to Dallas or somebody else?
Quisp! What does this mean? Does the claim by Dallas open up salary to spend on a trade acquisition (Whitney? Moreau? Souray? Anybody?)?
[Reply]
KC23 – in the Kings’ second year, they acquired Eddie Shack and I got to see him score a hat trick against the hated rival, the Seals (which also was a shutout for Gerry Desjardins, I believe!).
[Reply]
Segal’s contract:
Contract Drilldown
START YEAR: 2009 END YEAR: 2011 TYPE: STANDARD EXPIRY STATUS: UFA
SEASON TYPE AHL SALARY SALARY BONUSES CAP HIT
2009-2010 TWO-WAY $130,000 $550,000 — $550,000
2010-2011 TWO-WAY $130,000 $550,000 — $550,000
Purcell’s contract:
Contract Drilldown
START YEAR: 2009 END YEAR: 2010 TYPE: STANDARD EXPIRY STATUS: RFA
SEASON TYPE AHL SALARY SALARY BONUSES CAP HIT
2009-2010 ONE-WAY $600,000 $600,000 — $600,000
So unless you think a 50k difference is clearing up cap space then that would make sense. But it’s not the reason.
[Reply]
I’m starting to think of Quisp as Batman… we need some sort of Quisp signal to alert him…
[Reply]

I was at the game he got a Hat Trick and did the perioet(sp) at center ice after a hat trick. Must of been a closet figure skater. lol

I guess I was wondering if DL would rather keep TP as a trade bargaining chip, while waiving Segal to clear $550K on the books (which could offset the addition of a bigger salary such as Souray/Moreau/Whitney. Maybe the Kings really want Whitney but he wants a 1- or 2-year contract extension, and to make it work on the books, shedding Segal and/or TP clears up some money.
I’m all for moving TP – he’s had his chance, and I’d agree that Segal made a much bigger impact this season – I like his physical style of play.
Also, Eddie Shack was classic – clear the track, here comes Shack!
[Reply]
This is an unfortunate loss, although minor. Still, the Segal or Purcell debate is valid, and for me Purcell might have been worth at least a pick from someone that still thinks there is an “upside” to him.
By the way, at the Detroit game, that was me shouting, “C’mon Purcell, show me SOMETHING. ANYTHING.” And I was also shouting, “C’mon Teddy, throw a nudge, give them mild chafing”. I was close enough to be heard, too.
Somebody, anybody please tell me something this guy has accomplished at the NHL level other than the first three games this season.
Segal going instead of Purcell is a mystery to me.
[Reply]
TSN reporting that the Kings have offically recalled Clune from Ontario and Segal to Dallas.
[Reply]
i think the reasoning was as simple as they thought segal would clear waivers…he didn’t…so clune will play maybe 5 shifts a game…if that…and if harry doesn’t get in there…before d.l. fills “the box”…
[Reply]
@ Variable
I was thinking more like Jay Miller.
[Reply]
The only bummer about losing Segal is that the Kings 4th line has been such a patchwork mish-mash of different attributes and it appeared that Segal was the solution for the 4th line right wing, especially after the recent succes of the team. But I ask, is anyone really that sore about losing him? Good luck with Dallas and thanks for your hard work Brandon.
[Reply]
Wahine-
A two-way contract doesn’t have anything to do with clearing waivers. It only affects the way a player is paid when they are playing in either the NHL or the minors.
[Reply]
Washine, yes he still needs to clear waivers. The only difference on the two-way is that you have different salaries for playing at different levels. So for instance since TP is on a one-way, if he got sent down and he cleared waivers, then he would still be paid the same amount of money. Whereas if Segal cleared we would have been paid only 130k a year down there.
[Reply]
Pffft. Ya want tuff, I’ll take Ross Lonsberry again.
[Reply]
What alot seem to forget is that Clune did earn a spot on the roster coming out of training camp. His time in Manchester has gotten him back to the level of play he was at before the injury.
He hopefully will bring a spark of energy with him and being an “Avery” type player can draw his share of penaltys and increase the powerplay time.
I liked Segal and wish him luck but other than being a “large body” I did not see much. I can’t remember seeing him set up in front of the net ala Smyth. I doubt the Dallas boards are thinking they will make the playoffs due to his pickup.
[Reply]
Frozen,
It also doesn’t clear any cap space, in fact we are now down another 75k, since Clune’s cap hit is 625k, as opposed to Segal’s 550k.

Injury report — Oilers forward Sam Gagner (knee) will not return until after the Olympic break, while defenseman Sheldon Souray is out at least another month with a broken hand. Ryan Stone (knee) is out indefinitely. Nikolai Khabibulin (back) and Ales Hemsky (shoulder) are done for the season. … Kings forward Justin Williams is expected to miss another month with a broken ankle, while Andrei Loktionov is on injured reserve due to a dislocated shoulder.
This was from the injury report on the nhl.com pregame for tonights game. Is this true? one month for williams? or just the staff not knowing the full details?

if it’s addition by minimal subtraction…like many of us have been saying in some variation or another for a few days/weeks now…it’s alllll good and according to d.l.’s plans…
remember…
d.l. only wants to ADD to the roster…he is NOT gonna trade any roster players…not even frolov…UNLESS…someone wants to overpay for a-fro’s services…
why would he screw up a good thing…?
RICH asked him on this site several times of late…you can check the archives…other sites have received the same answers from d.l.
he is in a position to make this team better…not worse…
what has changed…?
we have won more games than we have lost since that interview and are in a better position…
why would d.l. change his mind and stray away from the plan…?

Segal was just a depth player, nothing more. He really didn’t do more than throw the occasional check and, as mentioned, for a big guy he doesn’t really fight or even intimidate. When put on the 4th line with Moeller and RI, they really couldn’t cover in their own zone and also couldn’t get the puck out of their own zone. That isn’t all Segal’s fault, but he was a contributing factor. IMO, Harrold at least gave that 4th line some defensive balance some ability to cover players and clear the puck. So I am sure that DL would have preferred to hold on to the depth that Segal provided, but he wasn’t willing to tie up one of his 23 spots with him. We need to get more from a player than what Segal was providing. Those 23 spots are too valuable. I see RI(heavyweight), Purcell(skilled) and Harrold(flexibility) all as more valuable players. I see Jones as perhaps equal value to Segal, but we need more depth a defense right now with Drewiske still fresh from injury. So if you want to get a look at another player, this was really the Kings best option.
Look at this as a good problem to have. In previous years, we didn’t have this sort problem, because we had so many empty boxes and young players that we could easily make roster moves and not worry about ‘losing’ a player like Segal through waivers. Now we have NHL-level quality and depth throughout our roster, so something has to give if we want to get a look at another guy.
[Reply]
Well I went to bed excited to see that a big deal had been made and I wake up and instead of that “big trade” I see Segal is claimed by Dallas. Even though I think he was a hard worker, I’m not going to loose any sleep because of it.
Clune, I don’t know what to think of him, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. This was done to either clear up cap space for that “big trade” or… well I guess I don’t know.
Oh well, can’t wait for more Kings’ hockey!
[Reply]
Strange move. I’m wondering if there is more to this on a personal note or something we are just not privvy to. The money doesn’t seem to matter here. Seems like a lateral move except we ship about 20 NHL games of experience and about 30lbs out the waiver wire. There is something missing here that would make us all go “OOOHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! Ok…NOW I get it.” We may never hear of it though.
My question got answered this morning. We CAN directly call guys up from the ECHL. Nice to know. Maybe one of the reasons to have Ontario is for situations like these since DL obviously used Ontario to move Clune here. I’d like to know that exact reason. I figured Clune was sent there to have him close to LA since I heard nothing of his failure of development over the last year. Guess he was just sent there until Seegs was off the roster.
Good luck Brandon. You did good while you were here. I believe you belong in the NHL somewhere. Glad your dream is still alive.
Welcome Richie Clune! If you play tonight, knock the CRAP out of someone would ya! A lot of us will be there so GET TO WORK!

Well said, JWR.

Clune – Moller – Purce

We need a “ROLL CALL’ thread for the suite tonight.

I like the middleweight pest role…Avery and Lappy provided a spark in the stir-it-up department and that is something that has been lacking since they left. I hope Clune can play with heart, emotion and brains. If so he could be an awesome addition. I hope I get to see him tonight.

How soon we forget? Just last week when DL did not trade our core for ILY, he was a Genious and you all grateful. Now, that a forth liner gets picked up off waiver, all of a sudden DL is stupid? Come on. You folks forget, if he was put on the waver meant TM was in line with taht decision also. Yes, he had the potential and a big body, but got his head handed to him in every fight. And you wanna know why purcell was not put on the waiver? because, no one will claim him!
My point is either you have faith in DL or you don’t, but change your mind just after one loss or one minor transaction.

I was hoping for Cliche myself… i think he could be our Darren Helm come the playoffs

Maybe this is a dumb question, but how does a two way contract work in hockey, it seems strange if segal had a two way contract, why would he have to go through waivers..?

Well, no surprise that Segal was picked up by SOMEBODY, especially at this time of year and sooooo many teams having issues. Speaking of issues, it’s been FOREVER since the Kings have only had the issues we have right now, and I for one thank DL for the LACK and type of issues we have to deal with.
Again……..Geez, are the Yotes gonna ever start losing, or does this just mean the Kings will finish behind them at years end??? Is that a bad thing? We seem to field a formidable road mentality.
In DL I trust…….all others cash only…….thanks!
We need a win tonite, if only to keep the Oil on their presently 11 soon to be 12 game road losing streak. Make it an even dozen and send them on their way. And only because it’s the “Suite Game”. Have a great time guys!
GO KINGS GO!!!

Wow…all this activity over a 4th liner. Sure, Segal was a good guy, but do you know how easy it is to come up with 4th liners? They’re a dime-a-dozen for Pete’s sake!
IMO, Clune=Segal with more upside.
But either way, it’s not going to make a bit of difference to where the Kings finish.
Take a lude, everyone!

This is the weirdest posting that could’ve ever gotten 150+ commentts. It means one of two things (both not Segal related)
1) having 2 days off between games gets every fan on here a little bit bonkers
2) as the team is doing better and better more people are coming to the site…and commenting about everything… good god.
the good part about a blog is we can have a discussion on every roster move, the bad part about a blog is that we a have a prolonged discussion on every roster move
[Reply]
I agree with Skebo. Segal is expendable.
Purcell is much more valuable for potential skill and/or a trading chip. I’d rather see Purcell play with Moller.
For Kopitar’s line, either go back to:
Richardson—Kopitar—Simmonds
or make it:
Smyth—Kopitar—Simmonds
Richardson—Stoll—Brown
Smyth has played well with Kopitar, and Richardson has played well with Brown. Simmonds would be like Justin Williams on the 1st line and that looks more like a first line.
Keep Frolov—Handzus—Parse together as they are doing well. I think TM sees this as long as Parse is consistent. He really provides a spark to the line and makes it more of a scoring threat.
We’ll see what the 4th line is….

Once again, a two-way contract has nothing to do with clearing waivers, just how they are paid. A player with a one way contract gets paid his full NHL salary weather he plays in the NHL or in the minors, and a player with a two way contract gets a smaller paycheck when he gets sent down. That’s it. Clearing waivers has to do with age and the number of NHL games a player has already played.
[Reply]
Obviously, people just don’t like to give away something/someone for free, it’s not because of Segal. It’s because we get nothing back, not even a dime….
All I concern is how the Kings play and playoff, I believe DL always tries to improve our team, he must have his reason to do that.
By the way, why don’t we sign Ziggy? =)

[Reply]
Simmonds is a 3rd line guy. Putting him on the top two doesn’t make sense. He’s good in the stopper role but need to learn how to cycle better and to make the top two lines has to have a quicker stick and be ready for passes more than he is. Also..his passing is horrendous.
I know it sounds like I dislike him, I don’t, I really do like his play but he has to play where he’s suited for him to give the most.

I love that we can’t even lose a 4th liner without people going nuts! It’s going to be hilarious when we eventually trade away someone who’s actually good!

Am I the only one that sees the humor in this? LA trades Lauri Tukonen for Richard Clune from Dallas. LA wants to recall Clune but puts Segal on waivers to do so and gets claimed by Dallas – full circle.
Dancy boy won’t be back until the playoffs, just like Jim’s jacket.

Funny you mention Ziggy, as you know he IS STILL PLAYING and I think I heard he will be playing in the Olympics.
As for anybody they bring up to the Show, the way the “Machine” (Kings) are playing, anyone has to play at a high level or they’ll take a look at someone else. Seegs had his look and didn’t quite fit in so he’s gone. Next up, Clune? DL is in such a “good position” now that there aren’t many boxes left to check off, so one by one, he’ll try to fill them. If someone from the minors can’t fill it or DL gets a chance to deal for someone else, then that’s what’s gonna happen. That’s why Wisky looked so out of place last game, as DL said, he was afraid that would happen. Trying to jump into a moving car ain’t easy, and Wisky was out for a while.
[Reply]
Here’s a question to everyone pissed over Segal being moved…
Did anyone know anything about him coming out of training camp?
He’s an average 4th line guy. He brings energy and little skill.
zdfun What exactly did you want back for a guy like Segal? His value is almost nil…except for a cheap waiver claim.
Think of it this way…If he was a Dallas Star originally and the Kings had a chance to trade for him..what would you want to give up for him?
4th line guys come and go…Segal had his chance..he was ok for a 4th line player, so now let’s give Clune a chance to show that he can be more than a 4th line player…if not, he’ll end up going the same route as Segal.
Let’s face it folks…unless you have a certain skill (Ivanans fighting) there’s no such thing as a sure 4th line player in this league. they are all interchangeable.
[Reply]
Purcell’s “value” is lower than a pregnant ant.

Yeah I think we all agree about not being sure of TM as a coach.
We all thought we should be a lot higher in the standings than 4th or 5th place in the west.
None of us are the least bit surprised that we’re closer to 1st overall in the west than 9th.
I think a coaching change should be in order…do we all agree?
OBVIOUSLY BEING FECITIOUS.
I was just shocked at that comment.

There’s video of Ziggy on YouTube still tearing it up in the Slovakian league. I think he plays for a team called Skalica where he still posts 30 goal seasons however, the competition must be so far off NHL level…
[Reply]
KC23 – technically, Eddie Shack was in Toronto in 1967, then got traded to the Bruins for Murray Oliver before the 67-68 season, then the Kings got him for I don’t remember what.
But you’re right, he came here from Toronto (via Boston).
[Reply]
KC23 — you keep tweakin’ my memory….
Ross Lonsberry, eh….a heavy grinder along the boards,
and could score, but he, along with Cowboy Flett, got tired and discouraged by the poor team and piss-poor management at the time, so kinda ran down hill and were traded to the Flies….lucky them, it eventually helped Fleas win the Cup in ’75…

To conjecture, 6’2″ out, 5’10″ in. Don’t quite get it unless there is need to clear space(s)for an upcoming trade. Dare I think multi-player?
Segal will continue to develop within his role.
Purcell is a wild card. If he overcomes this developmental block he could be something at both ends.
And, he is close to Segal’s size.
Statically they both contribute about evenly. No reason Purcell can’t bang bodies for awhile.

Yep, he was a Bolt, 1 game, 0′s across the board.

@Dan
A lot of this team could be considered 2nd and 3rd line…except they are considered by most to be one of the top six teams this year.
Its about what they bring to the game. Very hard working, blue collar if you will. Same work ethics as the old Boston “Lunch Pail Gang”
[Reply]
Mikus was Ziggy’s centre the last couple seasons before this year.
Forsberg is also playin in the olympics. Same with Jagr
[Reply]
I hope we can RENT Ziggy for the rest of the season… he has same age as Whitney and Kariya.
According TSN, he had 52 goals in 53 game in 08-09…. wow…
[Reply]
Told you he’d get claimed.
As far as some of the questions raised above (I might have missed some, because there’s like five million comments here), it’s not a cap-space issue. The Kings have plenty of space right now, Segal’s hit is negligible ($550K) and anyway Segal doesn’t get paid as much as Clune ($6OOK and change).
DL couldn’t recall Clune before Segal cleared waivers or was sent down, because that would have exceeded the 23 man roster limit. Presumably, “recalling” Clune to Ontario served some purpose. I don’t know why they didn’t just leave him in Manchester until today. Hopefully Rich can get a clarification on this point from DL.
Lombardi doesn’t part with assets if he doesn’t have to. Waiving Segal, and risking losing him, means that making a roster spot available was important today. Could be just so DL can get a look at Clune; but if that’s the case then I think it also means DL was not that high on Segal for whatever reason. The other possibility is that Lombardi wanted the available roster spot so he could trade for a rental, and Segal was simply the most expendable part. That makes sense, except for the fact that Clune was simultaneously “recalled” to Ontario. Why do that?
One reason would be, just in case the expected trade falls apart. Then Clune is right next door and can jump right in.
The timing of the waivers is interesting to me, because — if I’m processing this correctly — no one could be activated to the Kings roster until 9am today. So, yesterday or the day before, Lombardi made a decision to waive Segal and to bring Clune into the neighborhood, just in case. Why the rush? I guess I’m wondering if the idea is Lombardi wants whomever he trades for to be in the line-up tonight, and if he can’t be, he wants someone available (Clune) to be the 4th line guy to fill the hole he created by waiving Segal.
But that’s just a bunch of nearly baseless speculation, using a small fraction of the actual facts…

Variable…… thanks for that. Much appreciated. Now I’m just trying to figure out how in the heck this topic got sooo many responses. While I carefully watched the ‘Kings’ when out in LA, can’t confess to having paid loads of attention to Segal. Somedays the Team looked Amazing, and somedays (even when they won – vs Bruins for ex) they looked not so fab.
But you guys have very keen eyes…. and I say that sincerely. So it’s interesting all that this has kicked up.
When in doubt, refer back to many prior Insider posts…. most are agreed that DL knows what he’s doing.

QUISP…
are you going to be there tonight…?
[Reply]
That makes sense to me: a trade was possible, but fell through. In which case it probably wouldn’t appear on our radar at all at this point. And it looks like DL vacated a roster spot for nothing… or for Clune, which seems a little odd.
I guess I’m a little surprised that there’s no one on the team with a waiver exemption that could be spared. But there it is.
[Reply]
>Quisp
Your scenarios make absolutely perfect sense.
NHL Network was commenting on the Kings a couple days ago about making an offer for Whitney awhile back, but with his desire for a 3 yr. contract and the Kings desire for 1 yr., they might have finally said never mind we’ll move on now thanks.

[Reply]
You know the hair club commercial that they always show on NHL network?
One of the guys on that commercial looks just like Teddy Purcell. Charlie the health care professional.
Keep an eye out for him.
[Reply]
What I believe happened here was that DL flirted with what he thought would happened and it didn’t work out.
I think he figured that Segal would clear waivers. That way, after these games he could be sent to Manchester during the break. I also think he had no intention of recalling him after the break as I am sure he makes a play for someone else after the break and before the deadline. So effectively Segal was dead weight and was on limited time here in L.A.
You send Clune to Ontario in the event that Segal doesn’t clear waivers as an emergency. If Segal cleared waivers, Clune would have earned milage by being sent right back to Manchester. But since he was claimed, instead of getting him on a fligth this mornign at 9am to arrive maybe around 4, he is now in the training facility practicing. A good move by DL that I bet he really didn’t want to happen but is ok with it.
[Reply]
Everyone please shut it about not being cup contenders. If you get into the playoffs you are a contender. You never know what can happen. Maybe on paper there are other teams that seem more ready, but paper doesn’t mean squat. Only 4 teams have more wins then the Kings so far this season. All but one of them have played more games at this point.
I’m not saying the Kings look like the best team out there. I am saying that they have beat everyone else above them and that is enough to not count them out.
[Reply]
not that Segal was a great player, but i never saw him really have to many breakdowns. sad to see him go because Teddy Purcell is still wasting a roster spot on our team excited to see what DL does at the trade deadline i know he has his eyes on someone but hope when its all done we don’t trade away too many players also if Ersberg is starting tonight i think it could be his last in a Kings jersey another player i like, but with all the JB hype i think Ersberg holds some trade value and your not giving up too much because JB can fill the spot. well sorry Segal i would have loved to have him on the team any day over Purcell but if were lucky Dean will throw him on waivers also and we can bring up another young prospect anyone would be better than Purcell… ANYONE!!!
[Reply]
More money for the Kolvy pick up in the off season =D

@Quisp
If you don’t recall Clune until today he could have trouble getting from Manchester to LA vice Ontario to LA which includes a practice with the team, Manchester doesn’t afford this option and with the weather the way it is back east…
[Reply]
@Ghaad: You are absolutely right. The playoff tournament is a crapshoot, as is any single-elimination tournament. Once the Kings are in, they’ll have a chance. This team is good enough to give any team in the league a real fight; they’ve already proven that by beating the league’s elite in the regular season.
I get a different vibe from these guys than I did from Andy Murray’s teams. Nothing against AM as a coach, but I always got the feeling that they were skating uphill against the better teams, and it showed in the playoffs.

54fighting -
I know, but then I thought, why do they have to recall him to fly him out here? I mean, if they have to wait until Segal clears, then wait. But do they have to wait to put him on a plane? Either way, he’s not going to play in Manchester’s weekend game(s), so why the Ontario recall?
Maybe you have to be recalled in order to be flown anywhere, but that just doesn’t make sense to me. By the time we’re through with all this, we’ll know the CBA backwards and forwards.

I thought Segal was fairly solid, for what he was, but I’m not DL and I’m not TM. From TM’s description, it sounds like he didn’t play the “system” well.
BTW, I love all these coaches and GMs we have here calling it a crappy move…like you’re knowledgeable or something.
WRT the Dallas link, looks like the fans are gripping. I guess that’s a good sign.
@ DougS – Yeah, but what is that? It’s not much different from where he is now, right?
[Reply]
Quisp, in order for the team to sponsor his flight out here, he needs to be recalled directly from the club. So to avoid that and to make sure he is here alreadu in case Segal was claimed, then you send him to Ontario and recall him from Ontario as opposed to Manchester. It was obvious based on what they told him, that he was going to California instead that he was being sent directly to the Ontario Reign, that it was purely to make sure he was already in CA in case Segal got claimed. Smart move all around.
[Reply]
@WTFK:
“BTW, I love all these coaches and GMs we have here calling it a crappy move…like you’re knowledgeable or something.”
Yeah. I’m surprised that this move has generated this much heat. I think it’s a lot of pent-up emotion from all the fuss over Kovalchuk that never got released. So the first move that DL makes, and boom!
SEGAL? WE WAIVED SEGAL?
This is something that will be largely forgotten when the big picture of this entire season finally develops. I mean, I wish Segal luck going forward, but… meh.
[Reply]
Segal, really?!?
Who cares?
[Reply]
This does make the 4th line even more of a questionmark tonight and as you’ll all remember TM’s 4th line of inneptitude started all these goals against rolling just after we went up 4-1 on the Ducks. Other than the wonderful job TM has done with implementing his system, he still has this ‘garbage line’ problem where all the hard work the top lines put in is somewhat erased by icing our 5 worst players at once.
Segal did his job well, yet TM still finds time to question his work ethic. I just don’t get why he says anything negative about a guy who’s gone. But at least BS wasn’t traded for a 7th rounded ALS Labs (who actually won in a shootout against the ‘Hawks last week).
Quisp, if you showed up with a “cristobal” nametag you still couldn’t hide your Vulcan ears.
[Reply]
200 plus posts for this? That’s funny.
Like many have said before, not sure I quite get the public outcry over losing a fourth line player.
If you have an issue with anything concerning the fourth line it should be that the Kings don’t have one.
At what point does Murray stop playing Ivanans?
Surely he has to know that you need to roll four strong (somewhat) lines to have any success in the playoffs.
Let’s call a spade a spade. Does anybody really think Ivanans is going to dress in the playoffs?
So (especially with the addition of Clune) when is he going to toss out a fourth line that actually resembles an NHL fourth line? Is he going to wait until the playoffs start? The way this man juggles lines you know he’s big on chemistry. Why not put a line of Clune, Moller and Parse together after the break and give them the rest of the season to gel?
