Roster update

Brandon Segal skated in practice today, and he will learn his fate at 9 a.m. Pacific time tomorrow, which is the deadline for him to be claimed off waivers. In another move, the Kings assigned Rich Clune from Manchester to Ontario of the ECHL today. It seems very likely that some type of move will take place tomorrow, so we’ll see how it shakes out in the morning.

the hold up with Whitney is not what we give up. That was established long ago, a pick (2nd round) and a prospect. The hold up is the contract extension talks. Unlike the Kovy situation, where we couldnt speak to his agent, DL is in major communications with Rays agent. Whitney wants 3 years. Likely because he doesnt want to come out West. DL wants to give him a 1 yr extens. Hopefully they meet in the middle on a 2 yr ext. Otherwise, we will be looking to a dumper team, hoping for easy pickens.

My guess is that “some kind of move” involves a minor trade involving the Kings giving up a pick or maybe the rights to someone on the reserve list.

It sounds like Clune has been reassigned to make room for Segal (assuming Segal clears waivers). But if the Kings are trading roster players, there would be no point in waiving Segal to make room for someone. Likewise, if someone was being dealt from Manchester, there would be no need to shift Clune to make room for Segal.

The rumor being floated about Cheechoo by Matthew Barry was that the Kings deal Moller and a d-man to Ottawa. Which strikes me as so absurd on the face of it, I have no idea how anyone could take it seriously. But I could see Cheechoo (or someone at that level) for a pick.

There is no way DL is trading anyone off of the roster (except spare parts, like Purcell or Jones) unless it’s a blockbuster. He knows better than to make the team worse in the short-term when it’s headed for the playoffs.

Now if we CAN pull guys from the ECHL, maybe DL wants Clune available for something and wants to be able to recall him in minutes rather than hours?

    Strange. Didn’t expect that.

    [Reply]

  134. DougS says:

Well, Rich says that Clune is going to Ontario, not the big club. So that means subtract 1 from Manchester, add one to Ontario. And Segal being waived means possibly add one to Manchester and definitely subtract 1 from LA. And if someone was coming back up from Manchester, why displace Clune to Ontario? I suppose it could be a developmental move, but Clune has been around too long for a demotion like this.

To me, this means that nobody is being traded off of the Kings roster unless it’s a blockbuster. And I don’t see a blockbuster in the works because a) DL is not going to substantially alter the chemistry of this team by trading a bunch of roster guys, and b) Kovalchuk has already been spoken for.

I don’t see Fro being traded. Even though he’ll be UFA, he will also be needed for the playoff run. DL likes him. And besides, if his roster spot is going to open up, there would be no reason to waive Segal to make room. Unless there’s a blockbuster brewing. In which case, see above.

  137. MikeL says:

McDonald, we did offer a 2nd, but i think he means Carolina is looking for a 1st, but LA has offered the best deal for Whitney no one else is willing or has enough to give up like we do for whitney. That’s my thinking of it.

    [Reply]

  138. DougS says:

Hmm. So the idea would be, a 2nd rounder for Whitney and no extension because he’s an old dude? I guess that makes sense to me.

    [Reply]

  139. Cynic says:

    LOL Doug!

That usually happens to me. I just remember him making the team and getting injured. Then he was sent down never to be heard from. When I heard this morning he was being moved, I thought this might be DL giving Clune the opportunity he never got because of his injury.

    So much for that thought.

With Whitney, I’d give him a 1 year with good money or 2 years at less money per year. 3 is too much for his age. Makes me think that might be a reason why Carolina is trying to trade him. They don’t want to lose him for nothing when they refuse to sign him to a 3 year extension in the off season. Whitney is not getting 3 years with anyone unless his price is under 2 mil a year. I’m not a GM and even I know not to do that deal unless the money is right and spread even for cap value.

  141. SMC says:

Look there’s a reason why Richard Clune is being sent to Ontario. Most likely he is being sent to Ontario to make sure that he is in Southern California tonight to be ready for practice tomorrow. At 9AM tomorrow when Segal clears waivers he will be assigned to Manchester and the Kings will have an open roster spot, if he doesn’t clear waivers, the Kings will have an open roster spot. Until that time the Kings do not have an open roster spot. So how do you get Clune to California? Easy! You send him to Ontario, and when the time comes and there’s an open roster spot, you make the call up from Ontario.

This is not a Clune got sent to Ontario thing, this is a circumventing the system that the Kings have to do because their AHL affiliate is across the country.

Of course a trade could change this all around if it occurs, but to me that fact that Clune was sent to Ontario was more an indication that he was going to be recalled to LA. That way he can practice with the team tomorrow morning. Compared to if they had to wait for tomorrow morning before recalling Clune.

    [Reply]

  144. SMC says:

You just can’t do that. As practical as it sounds you obviously cannot justify why Clune is in LA, when Manchester is so far away. But you can go around it and send him to Ontario.

Look at what Anaheim/San Jose do, they send players to Bakersfield/Worchester/Stockton all the time to save cap space. Now the rule is they have to report to those cities(Even if you know they are going to be recalled). Jason Demers of the San Jose Sharks has been sent down and recalled from Worcester 9 times. He’s even been sent to Stockton a couple of times as well.

I think some kind of trade is coming today or tomorrow. The Olympic trade freeze goes into effect tomorrow. After the Olympics there’s only a few days before the trade deadline. So basically we’re in the week of the trade deadline as far as league business is concerned.

I also know I joked that the “move” was possibly just Clune going to L.A. I went searching for more info. Now you all know I don’t trust McKenzie but he said on his Twitter at some point in the day yesterday that a Kings trade would be happening soon. I just hope what ever it is happens before 10am when I hit the road for the game.

I’d actually like to see Kariya here. I think he still has what it takes to have a positive impact on a game. The asking price for Whitney (1st rounder and a prospect) is ridiculous, forget about the 3 year extension.

Kozlov could be interesting, but he seems to be having the same problem as Frolov with his numbers this year.

I’ve never seen anything about Penner being available, but he would fit a tough gritty 3rd line winger, with some offensive skills, pretty nicely. He hasn’t been doing great in EDM, but he’s not a guy that is going to lead a team offensively. If he’s brought as a support player I think he could do much better. Plus I think he would work well in TM’s system.

Has anyone noticed how he’s struggled early with the Devils?
I’ve watched the Devils games with him in the lineup and what I’m noticing is everyone on the Devils is trying to set him up instead of playing their normal game.
This is what I feared would happen if the Kings got him. That’s why he was a much better fit during the off-season than getting him as a rental.

Lesson to those who think this is fantasy hockey…It takes time to integrate a superstar into the team concept…They don’t just come in and light it up right away like people assumed would happen.

    [Reply]

  166. ten for instigating says:

Just ask yourself this….Why would the kings assign Clune to the ECHL. You dont assign a player who you think will be in the NHL one day soon to the ECHL. If Clune wasn’t getting a call up to the Kings, he would just stay in Manchester. Ontario is just a layover while Segal clears waivers. If they waited till 9am pacific to call him up, he would get here at about 4pm. This is taking into consideration that its kinda snowing back east too.

Also why would they go through all this now, three days before the Olympic break, when they could just done it all after the freeze is over. It’s not like Clune is a game breaker that is going to make a huge difference over the next 2 games.
