If you have a moment, please check out my LAKings.com feature on the player formerly known as “The Piece,” Rob Scuderi.
I’ve seen the report that Brandon Segal has been placed on waivers. I’ve yet to independently confirm it this morning, although there’s no reason to disbelieve it, given that it comes from a person with actual sources. I’ll try to find out if there’s a corresponding move coming, but it doesn’t appear so at the moment. Practice is at 11 a.m. today…
Thought the coaching staff was reasonably pleased with Segal’s play. Wonder what gives? Character or personality issues?
[Reply]
Perhaps to make room for……
[Reply]
Rich,
Great piece on The Piece (I couldn’t resist).
[Reply]
Ilya!!!
[Reply]
That stinks, I like Segal’s energy. For a bigger guy, he skates well and goes into the corners like Tonelli or Taylor used to. Get rid of Raitis – he’s useless
[Reply]
Clune???? Please!!!!
[Reply]
Great Piece on “The Piece”.
[Reply]
It HAS to be to make room for someone. Thats the only thing that makes sense. It also means that whoever we are getting in a trade, we are not giving up a current roster player or there would be no need to make room…
[Reply]
There has to be a coresponding move…why else would they waive him…
Hello Whitney and hopefully Gleason
[Reply]
Hey Gary? Didn’t you get the memo? Kovi went to New Jersey and probably won’t move until the Summer.
[Reply]
maybe he is just doing a guest appearance on his brothers TV Show, Law man lol
[Reply]
Ya, Bradon Segal was definitely a fan favorite, I hope he clears waivers and goes to Manchester, they need him down there
[Reply]
Steve – hope you’re right
[Reply]
Yeah, Trying to figure out why not Teddy… do you really think he wouldn’t clear waivers?
Maybe Teddy’s part of the trade? a three way trade bringing in TWO wingers and trading Teddy or Scotty
[Reply]
I can just feeeeel that a decent trade looms in our future.
[Reply]
are those irrevocable waivers?
[Reply]
No way TP clears waivers. He has too much upside even though he hasn’t shown it with the Kings. I hope he comes through next year but I don’t see it happening this year.
[Reply]
Teddybear would be snatched up quickly by a lil kid needing something soft and cuddly…
[Reply]
Let’s hope he clears waivers.
[Reply]
Rich — what is going on?
[Reply]
Look at Matt Moulson this year, perfect example of what Teddy Purcell can do for a team
[Reply]
this is interesting…. i liked segal… way better big body than ivanans, ritas takes too many penalties!
i hope we get someone worth while if we do a trade!
doesnt have to be a superstar but a great role player… ethan mareau/dustin penner would be nice!!
[Reply]
yeah, look at Brian Boyle this year….Perfect example of what teddybear can do for a team…
[Reply]
Kings Spokesman said “Typical Roster Move” according to Berry.
[Reply]
cluuuuuuuuuuuuune
[Reply]
Doesn’t seem “typical” at all…
[Reply]
Nice read on the Scuds, thanks Rich.
[Reply]
I think Segal should clear waivers. Has anyone else seen any other report though confirming that Segal is on waivers? I couldn’t find anything myself.
[Reply]
Matt Moulson is a perfect example of what John Tavares can do for a team.
[Reply]
It would make sense if Williams was close to coming back but we know he’s like 8 more weeks away at least.
[Reply]
I thought Segal was doing well on the 4th line, and even looked good on the 3rd line for a while. It seems to me that we could have at least traded him, and got something in return, I could be wrong, but I dont see him clearing waivers. Too bad, i guess we’ll have to wait and “see what develops”.
[Reply]
Williams is a non factor for the rest of this season
[Reply]
Weird. It looked to me that Segal was earning a spot on the big club.
Shows what I know.
[Reply]
Segal will clear waivers. The most memorable thing he did was smash Jovo’s face into the glass. I do like the guy though, don’t get me wrong.
[Reply]
Segal was on the ise this morning before the team skate.
[Reply]
What gives with waiving segal..???? He plays with alot more heart than fro. and i hate to say it. They could have waived purcell, i would have been jumping for joy.. But now i have the sad face on..
[Reply]
I guess it would be a “typical roster move” if we were bringing someone up….but who? Clune I would guess, Westgarth? someone with grit, gotta be though.
[Reply]
At this point in the season i think he clears waivers and is assigned to Manchester. If it was early in the year i don’t know if he would clear, but at this time of year everyone is clearing space for playoff runs and or dumping salary for next season.
[Reply]
All this speculation over a fourth-liner? I’ve got to get back to work…
[Reply]
yeah… the kings need to get to the second round of the playoffs for william to play this year. he’s gonna need sometime to get his feet back once he’s all healed up, especially since it’ll be playoff hockey!!!
BTW… not a typical roster move IMHO… somethings brewing
[Reply]
bring up Westy and we have the H line with little Oscar in the middle…with his little scraggly beard…tee hee.
[Reply]
Well maybe with the Olympic break coming up they wanted him to get some games in Manchester. But it seems a little risky…unless they just think no one wants to waste their waiver pick on him…
[Reply]
Then again, after the Olympics are over, if they want to bring him back up he will have to clear waivers again…and at half price! But I guess that’s the same story even if they do get someone via trade. As it looks now, Segal is done with the Kings this season….
[Reply]
@Gary … I admit I laughed. Thanks for the chuckle.
@Dan H. … I agree 8 weeks for Williams (give or take the entire summer, that is.)
[Reply]
@ihatestars
I think we’ve all grown accustomed to the plethora of spelling and/or grammatical errors in the comments section, but misspelling “ice” has got to be one of the worst.
Maybe you should change your name to “ihatespellcheck” or “ifailedenglishclass”
[Reply]
Steve, we aren’t getting Tim Gleason back. Carolina is very high on him, he will be part of their rebuild. However, Joe Corvo is another story..
Ray Whitney would be a nice piece to add, but not with a long contract extension attached to him.
Now that it’s obvious to the world that Dean Lombardi is ready to add a scorer, he might look at Paul Kariya or Simon Gagne.
[Reply]
don’t bee hayting bad spelerss. It’s mene.
[Reply]
I’ll buy that. Manchester is going to need him over the next three weeks and the Kings won’t. They don’t expect him to get picked up off the wire.
[Reply]
stnlycupla-
LOL
[Reply]
…but the Kings DO need him for these next 2 games, right? Some sort of move has to happen IMO.
[Reply]
Rich, I know he’s hurt, but you forgot JW in the piece on the Piece re: cup winners. … Great piece!
[Reply]
Um…I love Segal, this sucks
[Reply]
Isn’t Corvo injured?
[Reply]
@waves – I think they decided they don’t. If they stick with Wiskie and plug in Harry on offense.
[Reply]
Maybe a call up for some one from Minors? Perhaps Clune?
[Reply]
The reign of Mikus begins.
So let it be said…
So let it be written…
[Reply]
@Gary haha, I had to laugh
If DL wanted to make a move, it should be before the Olympic break. Moving Segal makes sense to clear a roster spot, although I hope he stays in the system.
[Reply]
Scot, really? Paul Kariya as a King? Should DL reacquire Rob Blake too? And Teemu? My gawd…/
[Reply]
Whiskey was slow last game, I hope its just coming back and not used to the speed of the game yet. But ya i didnt like his play.
[Reply]
Hey, Teemu for Teddy!
[Reply]
Excellent piece on RS Rich.
[Reply]
The Olympic break is coming. Manchester needs forwards. Segal was expendable based on what the team currently has. This doesn’t strike me as a big deal. That he’s gone through Nashville, Anaheim, Tampa and now LA means that the chances of him getting claimed are marginal, I suppose, so he can be in the lineup for the 3 games the Monarchs are playing this weekend.
[Reply]
teemu is a chump we dont want any of that. getzlaugh needs him to get his soup for him now that he is hurt anyways.
[Reply]
Nice read on Scuds Rich, thanks! I was curious as to where he felt we are RIGHT NOW as compared to the Penguins in their rebuild before winning the cup.
JUST SAY NO NO NO TO KARIYA – the guy gets hurt way too much to be able to rely on him… he’s just too dang small and fragile.
I’m a bit bummed on Segal being on waivers. It was nice to have his size out there. I suspect Dean’s up to something, but if he’s not able to pull off what he wants, we do have Clune who should easily be able to step into Segal’s spot and bring at least what he did…
Here’s to hoping Segal clears and gets to finish the year in Manchester!
[Reply]
WTKF, the problem with that theory however is that if the Kings need him down the stretch, which they may, he needs to clear waivers again, and at re-entry waivers the team picking him up is only responsible for half his salary. That makes him much more attractive.
[Reply]
Corvo caught a skate blade on the back of the ankle a few weeks ago and has been out, so won’t be him.
I agree with previous posters. Something is looming and I am the biggest trade skeptic out there. They aren’t putting Segal on waivers for no reason.
GO KINGS!!
[Reply]
This is probably just a typical move.
Or purcell 2nd and a 5th 4 whitney and corvo haha
[Reply]
the timing of Brad’s situation is coincidently with Edmonton being in town.
[Reply]
This is probably just a typical move.
To get monarchs some players during the olympic break. Oh and Corvo isn’t injured he played last night.
Or purcell 2nd and a 5th 4 whitney and corvo haha
[Reply]
Sucks that Segal could be gone…
Definitely seems like DL has something in the works. I hope he brings in someone with some decent playoff experience. We’re going to need it.
[Reply]
I’m guessing that if anyone wanted Segal his salary isn’t going to be an issue. I doubt he’s much of a cap hit at full salary.
[Reply]
I’d like to know the reasoning behind this too. Hmmm…
[Reply]
Ethan MoreaU?
As good a guess as any.
[Reply]
nice read, RICH…
i’m starting to think “the piece” will be a coach in the league one of these days…
re: segal…
i went to bed last night thinking that if the kings were gonna make a move. it would happen before tomorrow’s game…but i wasn’t expecting this…
maybe it’s just yr “typical roster move”…but the timing could suggest someone incoming…
[Reply]
I like Segal’s understanding of his role. I think there’s a slim chance he gets picked up elsewhere, but even if that happens he is replaceable either in Manchester or in the off-season.
[Reply]
Looks like it’s Clune coming up.
[Reply]
Kinda sucks. I was hoping hed score another goal just so I can see him celebrate it.
[Reply]
Hopefully Segal isn’t claimed and he comes back to the Monarchs. The Monarchs could use him as we have lost 3 games in a row.
[Reply]
Yeah, I don’t think it’s like Segal’s salary is a concern. It was probably for Clune, but in either case, if he passes waivers down, he’ll probably pass on the way up, too, if necessary.
[Reply]
Waivers issues make me feel embarrassed about the fact I’ve been a hockey fan since the 1969 and still have no clue how it works.
I have no idea why DL did this and I admit it. I do know that DL doesn’t seem to take foolish chances and this was no willy nilly hope he clears waivers move.
My only conclusion would be that DL knows he will clear waivers or this has something to do with a trade that is virtually a done deal. Still though, I admit I haven’t a clue.
[Reply]
Very nice job on the article re: Scuderi. Thanks
