Morning reading

A Piece to the Playoff Puzzle

I’ve seen the report that Brandon Segal has been placed on waivers. I’ve yet to independently confirm it this morning, although there’s no reason to disbelieve it, given that it comes from a person with actual sources. I’ll try to find out if there’s a corresponding move coming, but it doesn’t appear so at the moment. Practice is at 11 a.m. today…

Thought the coaching staff was reasonably pleased with Segal’s play. Wonder what gives? Character or personality issues?

That stinks, I like Segal’s energy. For a bigger guy, he skates well and goes into the corners like Tonelli or Taylor used to. Get rid of Raitis – he’s useless

It HAS to be to make room for someone. Thats the only thing that makes sense. It also means that whoever we are getting in a trade, we are not giving up a current roster player or there would be no need to make room…

Yeah, Trying to figure out why not Teddy… do you really think he wouldn’t clear waivers?
Maybe Teddy’s part of the trade? a three way trade bringing in TWO wingers and trading Teddy or Scotty

I thought Segal was doing well on the 4th line, and even looked good on the 3rd line for a while. It seems to me that we could have at least traded him, and got something in return, I could be wrong, but I dont see him clearing waivers. Too bad, i guess we’ll have to wait and “see what develops”.

  37. Atomic Steve says:

At this point in the season i think he clears waivers and is assigned to Manchester. If it was early in the year i don’t know if he would clear, but at this time of year everyone is clearing space for playoff runs and or dumping salary for next season.

yeah… the kings need to get to the second round of the playoffs for william to play this year. he’s gonna need sometime to get his feet back once he’s all healed up, especially since it’ll be playoff hockey!!!

BTW… not a typical roster move IMHO… somethings brewing

  41. tantrum4 says:

Well maybe with the Olympic break coming up they wanted him to get some games in Manchester. But it seems a little risky…unless they just think no one wants to waste their waiver pick on him…

    [Reply]

  42. tantrum4 says:

Then again, after the Olympics are over, if they want to bring him back up he will have to clear waivers again…and at half price! But I guess that’s the same story even if they do get someone via trade. As it looks now, Segal is done with the Kings this season….

  45. Scot says:

Steve, we aren’t getting Tim Gleason back. Carolina is very high on him, he will be part of their rebuild. However, Joe Corvo is another story..

Ray Whitney would be a nice piece to add, but not with a long contract extension attached to him.

Now that it’s obvious to the world that Dean Lombardi is ready to add a scorer, he might look at Paul Kariya or Simon Gagne.

  61. Marc Nathan says:

The Olympic break is coming. Manchester needs forwards. Segal was expendable based on what the team currently has. This doesn’t strike me as a big deal. That he’s gone through Nashville, Anaheim, Tampa and now LA means that the chances of him getting claimed are marginal, I suppose, so he can be in the lineup for the 3 games the Monarchs are playing this weekend.

    [Reply]

  62. pr0cess says:

teemu is a chump we dont want any of that. getzlaugh needs him to get his soup for him now that he is hurt anyways.

  63. roadtripper says:

Nice read on Scuds Rich, thanks! I was curious as to where he felt we are RIGHT NOW as compared to the Penguins in their rebuild before winning the cup.

JUST SAY NO NO NO TO KARIYA – the guy gets hurt way too much to be able to rely on him… he’s just too dang small and fragile.

I’m a bit bummed on Segal being on waivers. It was nice to have his size out there. I suspect Dean’s up to something, but if he’s not able to pull off what he wants, we do have Clune who should easily be able to step into Segal’s spot and bring at least what he did…

Here’s to hoping Segal clears and gets to finish the year in Manchester!

    [Reply]

  64. EASportsMgt says:

WTKF, the problem with that theory however is that if the Kings need him down the stretch, which they may, he needs to clear waivers again, and at re-entry waivers the team picking him up is only responsible for half his salary. That makes him much more attractive.

  65. LAKingsFan26 says:

Corvo caught a skate blade on the back of the ankle a few weeks ago and has been out, so won’t be him.

I agree with previous posters. Something is looming and I am the biggest trade skeptic out there. They aren’t putting Segal on waivers for no reason.

Yeah, I don’t think it’s like Segal’s salary is a concern. It was probably for Clune, but in either case, if he passes waivers down, he’ll probably pass on the way up, too, if necessary.

  79. KC23 says:

Waivers issues make me feel embarrassed about the fact I’ve been a hockey fan since the 1969 and still have no clue how it works.

I have no idea why DL did this and I admit it. I do know that DL doesn’t seem to take foolish chances and this was no willy nilly hope he clears waivers move.

My only conclusion would be that DL knows he will clear waivers or this has something to do with a trade that is virtually a done deal. Still though, I admit I haven’t a clue.
