Lines/Segal

Brandon Segal will be eligible to be sent to Manchester if he clears waivers at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

A slightly different look with the forward lines in practice this morning:

Richardson-Kopitar-Brown
Smyth-Stoll-Simmonds
Frolov-Handzus-Parse
Ivanans/Moller/Purcell/Segal

I like Segal, but he really is just another plug that can be replaced by just about any other player in Manchester. He is just barely a step above Zeiler

Really? The lines have been juggled so often that these really do feel very familiar. Richardson has played with both Kopitar and Brown over the course of the past couple of months, Brown of course has played with Kopitar in the past. All the “S” people have played with each other (on the ice) numerous times, and the whole Handzus, Frolov and Parse thing has been a unit as recently as last game. As for the fourth line melange, we’ve seen it all before…

Where does Whitney fit ;) ?

  5. Good2bKings says:

Does placing Segal on waivers open a roster spot? Looks like we are only carrying 22 without him. No corresponding move doesn’t mean a trade is imminent, but it certainly makes things easier to put a traded player on the roster.

  6. jack hole says:

we are lacking some toughness and teams can run us over if we don’t have some soon. Simmonds and Ivanans can’t do it all. Call up Clune and put him on the 4th line and make it what a 4th line should be… Energy line, Purcell doesn’t have any Energy and shouldn’t even be with the club…

  7. Quisp says:

I’m surprised he’s not waiver-exempt. I guess he had a contract in Tampa, which he signed…when he was 25…which gave him one year of exemption…and now he’s past it? Yeah, that’s got to be it.

    I doubt he clears.

Why do this? You’ve got 13 forwards listed above, plus, Doughty, Harrold, Johnson, Scuderi, Greene, Drewiske, SOD, Jones…that’s 8 and the goalies is 10. That’s 23.

If he’s being waived, then it’s to make room for someone. Who? Elkins?

Elkins makes sense. He’s being doing quite well in Manchester since his demotion after repeated brain farts in the offensive zone that lead to turnovers and goals. I like Elkins play for the most part.

I know that this has been covered here ad nauseum before, but I don’t understand something.

I understand trying to get Segal some playing time with the two week Olympics break coming up, but with the line combinations at practice this morning, that means Purcell is on the fourth line. I thought fourth line players were supposed to be more grit than glitter.

Is that what we really want to do? I think Segal is more valuable in that spot, if for nothing else but for the check he laid on Jovanovski earlier.

You are right about the 4th line grit part. Don’t get to bent about Purcell on the 4th, because he isn’t. Teddy is just a name on a list at this point of the season, he’s not on any line.

  18. Quisp says:

    Mike -

It’s not just for “playing time.” You wouldn’t risk it. I seriously doubt he’ll clear. Lombardi has to be bringing someone up. I said Elkins, but sure it could be Clune. Could be a trade, too, of course, but if that’s the case it’s just for picks or prospects, because if we were sending a roster player back, you wouldn’t need to clear space. I’m sticking with call-up as the safe bet.

    Jammer -

I liked the fourth line of Parse/Moller/Purcell the Kings had out for part of the game against Detroit. That is a line that can do some scoring damage against the slugs of another team’s fourth line. Often, that is better than trying to inflict some physical damage.

Belexes – thanks for that explanation.

I’m not bent about Purcell on the fourth line. Quite frankly, I’m not sure where he fits, to be honest about it.

Quisp – you don’t think Segal will clear waivers?

    [Reply]

  26. txkingsfan says:

Belexes, Elkins is a kid and is expected to make bonehead plays once in a while – even Doughty shows his youth at times. Elkins could have easily stayed with the club and been a healthy scratch but it was more important for him to take his lessons from the big club and apply them at Manchester – which he has done so very nicely (take a look at his stats since his return). DL understands this and is not going to judge a player based on a few games, especially at the beginning of his career.

*If Manchester needs bodies during the break, then no one else is coming up, right?

*If Manchester needs bodies during the break, is there any reason not to send Segal (and/or Moller) back on Saturday instead of today?

*If the move is for Segal to play during the break, then that holds true for Moller as well. Sending them separately, and before the next two games seems pointless.

-Therefore, the move isn’t because Manchester needs players OR because Segal needs to play during the break.

…it’s because someone else is coming either from Manchester or a trade.

    Make sense?

And yes, there are now 22 active players on the roster.

I agree Waves, and because you are opening one roster spot doesnt mean you are not trading a roster player either. You could very easily send a roster player along with a 2nd round pick for two roster players in return. But do we really need two more bottom six forwards?????? It wont be a defensemen because then thwy would have placed Jones on waivers and not Segal, and the Kings have no waiver exempt D-Man at this point.

I thought Elkins was pretty good when he was up here. Did some good work on the PK. I still think that roster spot will be taken up at some point with a trade.
I just didn’t see much from Segal. He forechecked well and took the body, his goal scoring ability was nil and his fighting ability was nil. He was basically a little better version of Zeiler. He’d be a nice guy to keep in the organization. I hope he clears.

Purcell isn’t a candidate to be waived because you can always trade “potential”. Some other organizations might think a change of scenery is what he needs. He has some value..certainly a lot more than Segal.

What was so wrong about Richie-Kopi-Simmonds? From my perspective it jump started Kopi again as he really had to start moving his feet to keep up with those two. Then we had Brown-Stoll-Smyth who were a great drive to the net line, which seemed to really get Dustin going again…

It seems like we have 6 guys to mix and match on the first two lines, which I guess is an okay thing, but why did we mess with what was working? The only thing I can think of is TM wants to get Kopi out there with more “finishers” type of guys.

  52. KingMe20 says:

The thing that stood out to me in the loss to the Ducks is that the Kings didn’t take the initiative to be really physical (outside of a couple of big hits by Brown and Doughty). They need a little more sandpaper. I liked how Segal had brought that to the team. I hope he clears and gets a chance with Manchester to go to the playoffs. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think also that they won’t be able to bring him back up without putting him on waivers again, so if he goes down, he’ll stay there until the end of the season.

In my opinion, the guys who really need to step it up are Stoll and Parse. The team as a whole didn’t play well, and losing Scuderi didn’t help, but they seemed to stand out more to me than any other players as having had a particularly bad game.

IMO the Kings should take play makers over the physical guys. If you need some physical presence, Segal had the size over Clune. Clune’s on the small side by NHL standards and its a very hard match up for the smaller guys against say, most NHL defensemen or the larger forwards. Which seems to be almost everyone these days in the west. Segal sometimes seemed a bit slow for the NHL pace.

If its Clune being called up, let’s see how he does. I watched Clune play this summer and was not impressed but WTF do I know. Since Clune keeps getting press he apparently least has the big personality and if his play matches his mouth he should do OK. We’ll see. He didn’t put up much in the way of AHL numbers. Good players produce.

Someone mentioned Manchester needs Segal. Why?

I guess this will be another move I won’t understand until a few games have passed. Hopefully Clune will be so full of piss & vinegar in a controlled sort of way that he’ll have to stay.

Maybe this has to do with him making the team at the beginning of the year and getting injured and sent down. Maybe it’s an honor thing with DL to give him that shot his injury took away. Maybe I’m just rambling.

I’m not going to go over the argument of comparing players from different eras, but both the Ducks of 07 and the Flyers of the 70′s had toughness that couldn’t be matched by the other teams of the league. The two teams are very comparable, and because of the Ducks success that year, there has been a resurgence in “tough” hockey…

  159. Tookie says:

Khanon- Fro lately has been playing A LOT better, He’s scored a little and during the last streak it was like a different Fro. he was banging and mixing it up in front of the goalie during scrums. [Reply]

  160. Skebo says:

Belexes, still no comparison. Nobody was saying the Ducks didn’t play tough hockey, but they certainly were not on any sort of level as the Bullies. The ‘toughest’ guy on your list would be Parros, right? Well he sat for most of the playoff games and only logged 10 PIM. Dave Schultz, on the other hand, accumulated 139 PIM in the Flyer’s SC run in 74. Which is like a whole season of PIM for Parros. The other guys all agitate and maybe fight to a certain extent, but they are all trumped by the level of craziness that the Bullies brought to that era. Any comparison between the Ducks of 07 to the Flyers of the mid 70s is apples and oranges.

Fair enough. The Ducks were a tough team when they won the Cup. I think Brian Burke is a good GM, but I don’t think he’s as great as some people think he is. That said, I do admire him for valuing toughness. Also, I sincerely hope they one day remove the instigator rule and allow the players to police themselves once again.

“At 6′1 and 185 lbs, how many of those Ducks I named do you think would be afraid of Dave Schultz?”

We’ll never know the answer to this, but if both teams had a bench clearing brawl I’d still put all of my money on the Broad Street Bullies.

I know those were different eras, that’s why I pointed that out up front. A playoff series used to see the first game used to “soften” up the opponent. There is a difference between toughness and tough to play against. I would rather have a team that is tough to play against. Phaneuf for the last two years has been dropping off a bit. He is not the same player as he was back in 2007-2008. Maybe the hits he has been dishing out has caused his play to slip.

The Kings will need grit to make a run in the playoffs but sometimes you need to get there to see what it takes. I am sure everyone here does not believe that they will take it to the cup this year. They will have to find out how to win in the playoffs just as they have found how to win this year in the regular season.

Khanon: I am not one to follow blindly. Especially Kings management. I went to my first game in 1979, so I have seen alot of crap espoused by owners/ GMs etc. In all that time, watching DL, I think the man has earned my respect and allegiance. He knows what he’s doing. He’s built up the entire organization, not just the on-ice product. I have complete faith in his judgement, so perhaps I overreact to criticism of DL, because if people get impatient and start calling for his head…. If that happens it will be a trule tragedy. We’ve never had someone of his ilk in our organization. Think about the scouting dept., player development, Manchester and Ontario, etc. We will, for the first time ever, be a great team for a long time to come. Yes he’s made mistakes, is not perfect, but he’s FAR AND AWAY THE BEST WE’VE EVER HAD HERE.

I agree. I think DL is one of the better GMs in the league. No argument there…

    Wow.

Brandon Segal produces a thread that is 212 comments long? Two hundred twelve comments? Either the rumor-mongers among us are really, really BORED or this thread is the result of KOVI-withdrawal!

Juraj Mikus must be green with envy.

Open up one little roster space on the Kings’ roster and the world goes insane?

–I agree there must be another move coming–

No matter what the move is, I think it’s hilarious that the impending loss of an energy fourth line player has pulled everybody’s panties into a wad. Does anyone really think that Brandon Segal being picked up/not being picked up could be the key to an important deal?

The discussion here seems to revolve around team toughness. Personally, I don’t think toughness is going to much influence the outcomes of the remainder of the Kings regular season games. The trade can’t involve Edmonton, though. They are the worst team in the league, so no team could challenge their claim Segal on waivers, thus there would be no need for a trade.

So… If Segal is not the real focus… Richard Clune?

Someone who wants Clune should be wondering what happened to him since the beginning of the season. Certainly Clune has NOT had a noteworthy year in Manchester. All those hopeful knuckle-dragger groupies out there must be in apoplexy over the thought of Christmas Eve in February, but seriously, Richard Clune? How could Clune help the Kings as a 5 or 6 forward? Certainly he is not a third-pair D-man.

Actually, I think a couple of other topics ought to be garnering attention, such as the beginnings of a comeback to remember in Montreal. What was a 5-2 3rd period lead is now 5-4 for MTL over the Washington Capitals, 9:50 to go… Streak is on the line!

And then, there is the fascinating link put up by Macdup about Olympic Lust…
    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/olympics/article4582421.ece

Perhaps there should be a discussion about the top line, but there is a link upstream to take care of that.

    But seriously, Richard Clune?

the whole implausible “richard clune is gonna save this team (from making the playoffs, i can only presume(?))” argument came out of nowhere…

khanon — I somewhat agree about the overall team toughness, but if you look at the top picks the past couple of years, then you will see it is coming.

Sutter is hanging on bay a thread after the Cammi fiasco last year. Do you really think he would trade Phaneuf to a Western team?
