It’s a day off for the Kings today, who will return to practice tomorrow in advance of Thursday’s game against Edmonton. It’s good timing for the walking wounded, such as Rob Scuderi (flu) and Ryan Smyth, who got smashed by a Drew Doughty first-period shot last night.
Here’s a poll question for the day. What do you think?
alt="LA Kings Insider with Rich Hammond" />
Barring a complete SJ collapse i think the best we can hope for is 4th, and that’s if we continue to play well and PHX goes into a skid.
I was looking at the standings last night and realized that if it were not for the 3 point games…LA/PHX/SJ would be a LOT closer in the standings. I hate the 3 point game.
[Reply]
The real test will be to see how we come off the Olympic break. We need to come out rejuvenated rather than complacent. That will tell how our run will end this season.
[Reply]
fourth would be a lot better than fifth…
[Reply]
I am hoping around the 4-5 spot, I do not want them to play San Jose, Vancouver, or Chicago in the first round.
[Reply]
I think fourth would probably be one home game better than fifth.
[Reply]
haha thats pretty much exactly what 4th means Kenneth
[Reply]
DAN RATHER…
well that’s all it would take or what we would prefer…no…?…that extra staples surge…
unless the sharks decide to falter BEFORE the season ends instead of in the first round, this is the most optimistic scenario…
[Reply]
Meman
None of those teams scares me.I would like to see us advance to more than the first round, but even the great teams have to face adversity in the playoffs. It’s the only way they’ll learn.I say if we make the playoffs then bring it on,lets take on all comers.
[Reply]
my heart says 4th but my head says 5th or 6th. Being the optimist, I voted for 5th.
[Reply]
Realistically, mid pack, 4th or 5th is where I see them finishing. I have the same idea as Jensen, it all depends how the team comes out of the break. The Olympics are a real nail biter. We have some really good guys playing in that tournament. Everyone needs to stay healthy for a solid sprint to the playoffs.
[Reply]
4th or 5th it doesn’t matter as long as we can play Phoenix. If we can get that we can turn Jobing.com Arena into a mixed crowd and take home ice advantage away.
[Reply]
I voted for fourth, I think the team will come out pretty consistent after the break. I just hope we don’t see any “March to the Playoffs” signs in the seats at Staples. I don’t want to remind people what happened last time we saw those…
[Reply]
Going down the final stretch I think Willie will be back(unless I missed any news about him)giving us even more scoring depth. If DL can secure any more depth at any other positions we should be poised to make a realistic run at a decent playoff position.I voted 4rth.
[Reply]
I would love for them to play San Jose or Chicago in the first round.
[Reply]
Dominick, I doubt Willy will be back this year. He’s still on crutches.
I voted 5th.
[Reply]
Not CHicago Quisp…. they just looked soooo good last year against my Nuckleheads. Toews is so clutch, and now you add Hossa and John Madden… I am scared of a 7 game series against them. At least in the first round. Give us a round or two to get the hang of this whole playoff game thing.
[Reply]
After being out of the playoffs for the last 6 seasons, anywhere in the top 8 would be fine with me.
But I have my heart set at fourth or fifth. Not to mention that the Kings have played well on the road, especially at phoenix.
[Reply]
Who was the one person who voted “9th or below?”
I suppose you are guessing the Kings will not win any more this season?
[Reply]
Rich would it be possible to ask Quick if his mask is approved for the Olympics? There’s been some talk on another forum that because of the slogan, “support our troops” that it violates Olympic rules. Im pretty sure he would get it approved before having the mask actually made ,but can you try and find out?

I thought last night was there day off.

Kovalchuk Watch! (the aftermath)
Games since trade for NJ: 3
Total goals scored in those 3 games: 7
New jersey record: 1 win, 2 losses
I. Kovalchuk stats: ZERO goals, 2 assists.
games since trade for LA: 3
Total goals scored in those 3 games: 12
LA record in those games: 2 wins, 1 loss
[Reply]
Bummer.I still say 4rth.
[Reply]
i think there’s something going on on TSN. they waited for the kings to finally lose before putting up the new power rankings so they wouldn’t feel bad for moving them up only ONE spot after a 9 game winning streak! if we win the cup, we might get ranked 3rd on that site.
hate to be a pessimist, but i have a feeling the kings have a couple losses headed their way based on the pattern i’ve seen this season. they have been mostly winning and losing on streaks. when they lose a game, they tend to follow up with another loss or 2, and when they win, again, they follow up with a streak of wins before they lose again. they have rarely alternated wins and losses this year.
i dont care what seed we get since home ice doesn’t seem to really be an “advantage” with the kings this year…especially in the playoffs where anyone can win. as long as we avoid playing vancouver i’ll be happy. phoenix or colorado would be an ideal first round opponent.
[Reply]
I voted 4th but I gotta love that some said 1st. That’s where I hope we finish but realistically it’s not likely. Good to see that confidence however.
[Reply]
Quisp, beating SJ would be great for not only the Kings but DL at the same time. Another year another president’s trophy and another first round loss by the sharks. I sense a mastercard commercial coming on…
[Reply]
Even if our boys faceoff against one of the tougher teams come playoff time, imagine the boost they will get off of a 1st round win……I say bring them on!
[Reply]
If they play like they did last night i would hate to say maybe 6 or 7th. Standing around is sure not going to cut the beans… And who care about Kovi or whatever you want to call him, Dumb trade on NJ’s part. Defense comes first there then Offense, so we all know Kovi doesn’t play D…
[Reply]
I think we are looking at 5th and possibly 4th. But not lower than 6th.

I think last night was the Mighty Shmucks focusing all their efforts and scouting towards the Kings.I know the Kings coaching staff will be looking at the tape to see exactly what we could change.Last night was a fluke, not a trend. We won more than just 9 in a row if you go back a few games before the streak.Confidence is high right now.
[Reply]
It would be tough argue against 5th, considering PHX is not letting up, and the other 3 teams are division leaders.
[Reply]
I think it is way to early for that! How long have you been a Kings fan????
[Reply]
Whoever voted for 1st place – love your positivity! I’m saying 4th or 5th. Voted for 5th, hoping for 4th

EA, don’t forget about the waver we have to sign to go on the ice. I just printed and signed it myself right now.
[Reply]
13-8-2 down the stretch likely puts the Kings in 4th. A little lower percentage than that and they drop down to 5th. Anything below .500 down the stretch and they drop to 6th. I think that they will secure 4th place, but that last week of the season is going to be critical. Especially that game on the 4/8 against the ‘yotes.
[Reply]
Are people actually voting 9th or lower? That is unacceptable!
[Reply]
Voted 5th. Hopefully we go into the break with 2 more wins.
[Reply]
100 points is attainable with this team.9th is definately unacceptable.
[Reply]
I don’t even know why 9th and lower is an option. Is that just there for Ducks fans to use? The Kings would have to go 7-14-2 to likely miss the playoffs. I don’t see that happening. Not with this team.

Thanks Kris,
Yes for all LAKInsider Suite attendees, there is a waiver you must sign and bring with you in order to get your picture taken on the ice. If you have not already received it please email me and I will get it to you asap. Thanks and looking forward to seeing everyone at the party on the 11th.

Edm x 2

vs teams that have more points: 3gms
vs teams that are below 8th: 10 gms
I also have feeling that the Wings will be the 8th seed and beat the Sharks in the first round.
I voted 4th.
[Reply]
For 4th place they need to go…
3-1 against the Avalanche
2-1 against the Starts
2-1 against the Preds
and
DL trades for a good scoring winger and maybe a rental d-man

Thorton breaks his foot in the Semifinals for the Gold medal game and the Kings take over first place on the last game of the season.

is it just me or…..
on the standings page… where it shows how long the streak of every team is… that stat was gone the whole time the kings were on their streak and now that it is over its back up. whats up with that??
[Reply]
I can see the Kings hovering around 4th and 5th until the last week of the regular season when they overtake 4th and finish as the 4th seed in the West and 4th best team overall.
[Reply]
Heatley gets speared in the neck and is gone for the season.Duschene is suspended for the remainder of the season and the playoffs.

i picked 5th but id love to get 4th. 1st is probably out of reach as the season best/playoff worst sharks will get that!
[Reply]
4th, if the kings split the series with Colorado and Nashville, otherwise 6th.
[Reply]
I voted 4th. Who knows though if we can build up another decent streak or two I think we could even fight for the division.
Off topic. I just read this http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=516907
Why can’t another set of games come to london????? I went to both games over here and it was great. Obviously I would love to see the kings but hey. What do people think about it?
[Reply]
A week or so ago I took a look at the remaining schudle. I think we are most likely coming in 4th and playing the Yots in the first round of the playoffs.
We taka the Yots in the first round in 6 games.
We play Chicago in the 2nd round and lose in 5.

Some teams have had a hard time recovering from trips like that to start a season. It would be a nice experience for the guys to do something like that though.
[Reply]
I hope we play Phoenix in the first round. It will be awesome since I’m living here. I will help turn the Coyote Den into a purple sea!!!!
[Reply]
I see LA 4th, PHX 5th meaning home ice for us and a first round match with the yotes.
[Reply]
Marc Crawford is going to hand us 3 games, simply because he doesn’t know any better. He’ll get fired because of it at the end of the season.

Glad to see it is PHX starting next year in Europe.
That jet lag can take a while to get over – hey, Mike Dunleavy used it as an excuse for a year when the Clips went to Moscow.
[Reply]
Boys and girls… how exactly (for those who voted for 2nd and 3rd place) do we come in there? Those places will almost for sure be for the winners of the other two western divisions unless very strange things happen and Sj drops Below the Kings and the Kings Win their division but with a worse record than Chic and Vanc. Um, somehow I don’t think that would happen.
[Reply]
I don’t understand how any of the 100+ voters could think the Kings will miss the playoffs at this point. They basically need 15-20 more points to secure a spot. Seems like almost a done deal to me, barring of course a major injury.
[Reply]
As of the time stamp of my post, there are 60 people who have voted “2nd” or “3rd”. ATTENTION! ATTENTION! Those slots will only be populated by teams from the other two divisions (provided SJ doesn’t pull a complete el-foldo).
The top three positions in the conference are for division leaders only, no matter how many points a non-leading team in another division has.
[Reply]
there must be a Quack troll voting 9th or lower over and over again…

Completely off the subject but every day it annoys me more and more. There is a backward slash on the top left hand corner of the “La Kings Insider” banner. At first it caused me to wipe my screen to try to get rid of it, but now it just bugs me. Can someone please get rid of it.

I don’t see any reason we can’t play .750 hockey, and I feel good about our upcoming games with Colorado. Combined with a little slide in PHX, I think these games will decide who gets 4th & 5th. They’ll be just like a 4th vs 5th pre-playoff matchup. And like I said, I feel good about that…
A few things to keep an eye on…
will Bryzgalov stay hot?
can our D (OD) keep up with the youth in Colorado?
[Reply]
I voted 5th place but hope for 4th. I think fans of other playoff bound teams will not want to face the Kings in the 1st round.
[Reply]
It’s going to be a tight race, I voted 5th, as long the Kings make the playoffs I’ll be happy it’s been 7 long years, I think some Duck fans got on and voted 9th or lower.
[Reply]
I think 5th is where they’ll end up but I wouldn’t be surprised (or upset) with 4th.
[Reply]
Bryz can stay hot, Roadtripper, for sure.
Bryz is the ‘Yotes Version of Quick, An unknown last year, and a big big deal this year.
You know… Only.. He’s no where near as good, or as cool as Quicker.
As far as where we end up, I suppose it depends on the “restart” at the end of the Playoffs.
We’ll see, I’m sure

i would love to see a kings / yotes first round. my dad lives in phoenix and is a season ticket holder….i would have to go visit for a few days to catch the 2 home games out there (i say only 2 becasue we would sweep the yotes of course!)
[Reply]
jcwla — I don’t believe in jet lag.
I find it interesting that last year we were talking about if Quincey should have surgury with 8 games left, since we might not make the playoffs. And 24 months ago we were arguing about Johnny Z being a 3rd liner or only a 4th liner. The discusion seems different this year.

I voted for 4th. Unless the Sharks end up choking there is no way we are going to move to first or end up with 2nd or 3rd. I could see 5th but I don’t think the Coyotes will keep these winning ways up (I hope).
[Reply]
I can see 4th being a huge advantage over 5th. Can you imagine the energy at Staples for a home game for a series opener? Last time the kings were in the playoffs, the guys on ESPN mentioned several times about the fans in the building and how they havent seen other teams with as much of the support as the kings showed by wearing Kings jerseys.
[Reply]
It will probably be 5th due to youth factor.
By the way, somewhere in recent posts I saw Quick and laziness used in same sentence. Someone needs their head checked. Look at Quick stats back to prep school. Kid knows how to work and how to win. Also, check posts from August, he attended player only meeting during his honeymoon! Maybe he has bad nights or let’s in some soft goals. But lazy, never!
Whew glad I got that off my chest.
[Reply]
I voted 2nd due to a collapse by the Guppies… I think that Chicago might be the top team in the conference…
[Reply]
The thing I worry about is that the Kings I know have this tendency to get complacent towards the end of the season. The game last night is exactly what I fear from this team as we head down the stretch. Unfortunately it gets harder, not easier from here. We’ve gotten by on the message that we stick to the game plan no matter what even if we’re winning or losing. I think we need to start injecting more pressure and emotion as the regular season ends, and make sure the Kings know how to handle that kind of pressure as well. If we don’t make the playoffs this year, the disappointment will stay with these players for a long time.
[Reply]
I think 4th is realistic. 2nd is a possibility if SJ starts to fade in the stretch (for whatever reason) and Chicago passes them along with the streaking Kings.
I think the 200+ knuckleheads are quacks fans visiting the site just vote “9th or less.”
[Reply]
@ KingsKnight
In the past I would agree with you, but this year’s Kings have thrown all of those past patterns on the dung heap. I am beginning to think that this team is going to really surprise us. As Kings fans, I think we have been on edge that this was all a dream and somehow they are going to blow it like every other Kings team in recent memory, but I am starting to be a believer after the 9-game streak. I don’t know if they have any more of those in them, but I am confident there will finally be a playoffs with the Kings not on the golf course for round 1!
[Reply]
I can’t believe 14% of you said 9th or lower…this is suppose to be a Kings Fan site….anyone who voted 9th or lower should find another team.
[Reply]
KingsKnight — when you have children, you will realize that the last thing you want to do is “Inject more pressure”. Youth will put enough pressure on themselves. A good coach will try to reduce internal pressure, deflect outside pressures, and just ask the players to be responsible for their actions. TM is doing an incredible job.
[Reply]
Jet – I agree with you. A good coach will let the players put the pressure on each other too. Just like he did against the Red Wings after the first. Say his piece and then leave the room. It obviously worked that night.
I think this team has another significant win streak in them. They are 5th in the entire NHL in February!!! I am not necessarily content with where they are, but I am freakin’ happy as can be at what this team is doing. Like has been said by others, I am having more fun this year than I have had in a long, long time as a Kings fan.
I can’t wait to see what they can do. I am going to be ready to rock on Thursday. Have to enjoy these next 2 games so I minimize the Kings withdrawals I will have for two weeks. Hopefully Team USA will be able to fill the void.
GO KINGS!!! GO TEAM USA!!!
[Reply]
An interesting look back:
I remember earlier in the season some people here were saying that the Kings’ management had given up on Matt Moulson too early and look how well he’s doing on the Islanders. Not so fast. Going into tonight’s game he has just 7 goals in their last 30 games and is getting little PP time now, so whatever magic his new situation had brought him has worn off completely. I very much believe in the abilities of the King’s upper management when it comes to evaluating what players will fit in the system down the line.
[Reply]
200 + votes for ninth place or lower? Rich, did you accidentally post this on Inside the Ducks?

[Reply]
I’m for 5th, looking at thier road record. I think an away game to start would be the way to go. GO KINGS!!
[Reply]
Where will they finish you ask?!?
How many games on that last streak featured a home team on back to back or “3rd game in 4 night” nights?
Did the Ducks look any difference with a night off after playing 3 in 4?
Now ask, “where will they finish?”
Tired goalie, tired star players all playing in the Olympics. Add to that a lot of bounces to even out.
[Reply]
I say 6th but hope for 4th. Kings have a habit of letting me down. Call it behaviorism. But I like my Kings once they are in. Whole new game.
Stay healthy Kings. And DO NOT get complacent.

in the 1st intermission report on VS., they had a plus/minus question involving quick, on whether he would be able to get to broduer’s 48 wins (NHL record). mccarty and englomb (former king from the early/mid 80’s) both said no. said he would have to go 14-6 in the remaining games (figuring ersberg or whomever would get a couple starts from our remaining games).
[Reply]
17 — I didnt think Slovenia made it. Drew and Jack are number 6 or 7 dmen and Quick will be lucky to get a game. I think we are one of the teams with less risk.
My Sharks neighbor is saying this is going to be a great draft, so I am trying to think like DL and see what I come up with. One think I found interesting, is that DL usually picks a dman in the first two rounds and the US dev team has 4 Dmen ranked in the top 60. Remember that DL went head to head with Michigan U. last month, one of USNT’s frustrations.
[Reply]
Newf,
I agree that San Jose would have to fall apart meaning 50% in points earned or less the rest of the way for the Kings to have a chance for the Division. But Phx is 2 pts and an extra game played which means if we win the extra game we are back in 4th again as we win the tiebreaker. Kings for the forth seed more than control there own destiny. I’m just hoping we make it through the Olympics without injuries. Our last best chance of making the Playoffs were crushed by injuries to Demitra and Frolov at the Olympics.
[Reply]
stop the puck — ya, now that I think about it, he probably will before 20, but Moeller was suppose to go before 20 also.
Dylan still has some development, but he has a late birthday and some basic skill. DL also likes WHL Dmen. Just a thought.
[Reply]
For this summer I hope we go after the P. Marleau instead of Kovi. He would fit our system better.
I believe he will be 30 or 31 he would still have alot great hockey left in him.
[Reply]
Jet, very good, I see the point.
[Reply]
I agree with you, Luc20. I love the idea of Patrick Marleau on the Kings. I just don’t know if it’s realistic to expect he might leave San Jose.
In terms of short term help, there’s one guy out there that I’m starting to think about more and more, and it’s a name a lot of Kings fans may not like because of the past, but hear me out. The name? Paul Kariya.
One of the areas the Kings could definitely be better is on the power play, and Kariya is a guy who can help. He’s probably a rental that won’t cost a lot (maybe not even a roster player), and he’s still effective… in fact, he just scored for the Blues as I’m typing this, and had an assist on their first goal.
For the right price, he brings scoring, speed, and Stanley Cup experience. He might be worth it.
[Reply]
I have supported the Ray Whitney trade, the more I hear about Ray Whitney the less I like the deal. He is the perfect fit for this year, but I don’t like the selfish me me attitude hijacking the trade negotiations. There are other players that fit are system, if I were DL I would start looking at those(J. Jokinen,A. Vermette,RJ Umberger, R. Torres, K. Belanger). I mean just look at the stats between Frolov and Whitney the numbers are very slanted toward Frolov and he is younger, and Whitney is asking for 5mil/yr and 3 years as a 37 yr old.
[Reply]
KingMe20, the only thing I worry about with Paul is he is not the grinder that TM likes to play. He may be a 4th liner that only gets in on the PP. Not only that he is the type of player that thinks he is above being checked, which means we would have to suit up Ivanans more, or as Simmonds to go against Heavyweights more often. That move has all the elements of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, but still I can see how it could help and/or hurt us.
[Reply]
I like the top three lines as they are…I would love to see some depth so the Kings can roll 4 lines with confidence. Cullen or Belanger?
Kings getting lots of love nationally…good to see!
[Reply]
tantrum4 what province are you from?
EX, holy man, I thought I was the only one who seen the backwards slash…thank you for making me laugh lol
[Reply]
I see your point, Luc, but I think if there’s an element the Kings don’t really have (at least with no Justin Williams), it’s a player that really backs defensemen off with his speed.
Left wing is a place the Kings can improve. Think about this depth chart: Smyth/Frolov/Kariya/Richardson. Don’t get me wrong, I love Brad Richardson, but I’m not crazy about him playing on the first line, and I think Ivanans just isn’t effective enough to justify him playing a whole lot in the playoffs.
[Reply]
Now, that I think about it. I know everyones going to hate this, but next year may be the better year to make the Cup run. Yes, we are jelling the chemistry is there we seem to be just a piece or may already be there, but how much easier is it going to be to add pieces at no cost in the offseason if we make a deep run in the playoffs this year. Only Fro, Ivanans, & Odie are up for UFA next year. If Hickey, Tuebert, or Drewiske are ready only Fro needs to be signed/replaced, and with his production this year it may be a bargain resign.
[Reply]
How about this idea? Tampa Bay is looking to dump salary. How good would Marty St. Louis look next to Kopi on the right wing? Talk about speed!!! He has another year left at 4 million and is more than worth it. He might be too much of a bargain for Tampa to give up considering they are in the thick of it in the East but if we sent them back Frolov, and a pick, it allows them to dump a salary next year and get a player that could produce now. Believe me, I like the way FRO has been playing but I dont think we are going to re-sign him. I wouldn’t want to pay more than 2.5 – 3 million for him and he will want at least 4-5 million.
After Last night, I think our need for a SOLID #6 D man is evident.
Thoughts?
[Reply]
KingMe20, You are right about Ivanans, but who protects Paul if we get him. We can’t ask him to man up, he has never done that in his career. I was there when he asked Kevin Sawyer(205lbs) to go back out there and fight Brad Norton(255lbs) after already being beaten rather throughly by Kip Brennan, when he fought Brad Norton it was just sad. Kevin never played again as soon as Brad realized that Kevin was out on his feet he let go, but the damage was already done I remember the officials guided Kevin over to the penalty box and he was out on his feet he continued to coast and bounced off the boards. PCS ended his career.
[Reply]
I think the D issue is more re-focusing on the way the Kings have played for most of the year. Take away the front of the net and passes accross that are below the faceoff dots. We had done a good job of that up until the last week or so. All the goals scored were not, because of the 6th D-Man.

I think Turco’s a good fit in Chicago or Washington. There’s been rumors about him coming to the Kings as a safety net for Quick, but doesn’t Turco have a no-trade, and if so, why would he go somewhere to be a backup in his final contract year?
[Reply]
Let’s say the end of the year standings finish similar to what they are today, with the 4th (Yotes) and 5th (Kings) finishing with more points then the 3rd (Canucks). Now let’s say the Kings beat PHX in the 1st round, Vancouver beats the Avs, and either SJ or Chicago gets upset. That would leave the Kings taking on the Nucks in round 2. Who would have home ice, the Kings with more points, or Vancouver with a higher seeding. I’m sure that scenario has happened before, but don’t remember it.
[Reply]
KingMe20 -
Turco does not have a no trade clause this season…
[Reply]
I’m with you Jeff P. I’ve been wanting Marty St. Louis as a King since Atlanta played here last season and I saw him in action. Plus, he seems to me to have the personality and character that DL likes so much. He and Dustin Penner are the 2 I’ve had my eyes on. Doubt either would ever happen, but it’s fun to dream!

Playoff matchups are determined by Seeding, and seeding is determined by points.

Seeding is determined by leading your division and then by points…

According to Wikipedia, the Kings will win the Stanley Cup this year.

USHA#17, I don’t remember posting that it accomplished anything, but the Ducks have the lingering reputation of taking cheap shots. That may be not be as much the case now that Pronger, May, and Bertuzzi are gone, but the Ryan hit on Moller had to be addressed. The last 2 games while physical were still repectful of opposing players. Whether the fight had anything to do with that I don’t know, but verse the Ducks its always a good idea to suit up an enforcer so they will know they must answer for there actions. The post about Kevin Sawyer was too explain how Paul Kariya expects legal checks to him be addressed (note: Paul will need protection). If you read on it will say it was just sad. If you have read my other posts you would notice I have lobbied for replacing Ivanans with a scorer verse all teams without
chippy reputations.

jayhay:
Interesting about the goalie wins record.
Something that we haven’t talked much about is if Quick does get near the record. What if things go pretty much as they’ve gone so far, so that Quick and the Kings get 10 more wins in the next 15-16 games?
That means there would be 6-7 more games to get 4 more wins. The Kings would have at least 46 wins + 3 ties = 95 points with 6-7 games to go. At stake would be 4th through 6th place (estimated), the Kings and Quick needing 3 more wins for 101 points (estimated), 4 more wins for the record.
The last 7 Kings games are:

As it looks, if Quick/the Kings can get to 46 wins by the end of March, there will be a real possibility he could get the record.
Now, the $24,000.00 question:
Would it be worth it for the Kings to get Quick to the record?
Cons off the top of my head:
–fatigue; it wouldn’t be necessary to get into the playoffs (likely accomplished by 46 wins/95 points)
–Ersberg needs work before the playoffs; unless Jon Quick has become the next Martin Brodeur–and statistically, maybe he has–shouldn’t he get a game or two down the stretch?
At any rate, this subject looks to be revisited sometime down the line, say, in mid-March. The reverse logic here, of course, is to ask how long will it take for Quick to get more than 7 losses (assuming Ersberg doesn’t throw one or two in there), but I don’t want to go there.
I didn’t vote for the Kings to finish out of the playoffs. I voted 5th, praying for 4th. But the schedule may actually favor both the Kings and Quick beind there for the record.
[Reply]
beind = being
[Reply]
4th would be nice, and it would be nice to avoid having to play Chicago, at least in the first couple rounds. Seems they can avoid Chicago the first round, but they’d probably draw either Chicago or San Jose (if they don’t choke) in the second (if the Kings don’t choke) or maybe the third seed (if…)
[Reply]
@Luc
You didn’t post, I wondered if you could make some kind of sense of that fight. We are on the same page when it comes to adapting the line ups for various teams.
Clearly the response to legal checks should be a retching up of the game, not a fight–at least not until things get out of hand and a release is needed.
I can not figure how it makes any sense (or impact on a game) when two “enforcers” punch it out on opening face off.

@jet
Thanks guys. The longer the season goes, the more I believe in these guys, but in the back of my mind I keep thinking back to how many times the Kings have gotten my hopes up only to have them fade out as the season ends. I guess it’s psychological. Usually I’m a total optimist.
And I agree with you about how Murray is handling the team. I keep forgetting how young they are because of how much success we’re having this year. Pressure from within and sticking to the system seems like the right direction.
[Reply]
USHA#17 -
I heard an interview with Doan tonight and he said he should play tomorrow…doesn’t sound like he’s out very long. Maybe one game…
[Reply]
USHA#17, Was it another Luc20 you wanted to respond.
I stated that although I don’t remember posting that it accomplished anything. I thought it was do to the illegal hit by Ryan on Moller in the last 8 seconds of the 4-0 victory on Jan.14th. So I think in the mind on Ivanans that needed to get resolved. If it was the first game of the season there would really be no good reason for it. I did go on to say that the last 2 games were played pretty clean. I am glad that in the last seconds on Monday a King didn’t take a cheap shot to get back at the Ducks, but thats just class which the Kings have and the Ducks don’t. That also is a reflection on the Coach TM vs RC.
[Reply]
Bako,
It may also depend on the workload Quick has in the Olympics. I don’t know how heavy TM rides Quick if Miller starts out shaky and USA rides Quick heavy.
You are right though if we lock up 4th seed we would likely need to have Ersberg see some action, and off that performance we may even want to bring Zatoff(I would like to say Bernier, but DL wants him to go thru the full AHL playoffs.) up. Does anyone know the contract impact of bringing up Bernier or Zatoff if Manchester is eliminated before the Kings in the playoffs.
[Reply]
Wow…we’re talking playoffs?!?!?!? This is surreal…

I don’t care were we finish as long as we make the playoffs. It has been so long I am paranoid.

Dayman: Thanks for posting, it’s really fun to look back at some of those polls.
For example, before 2008-2009: Who should be the Kings’ starting goaltender?
Jonathan Bernier 25% (447 votes)
Erik Ersberg 44% (778 votes)
Jason LaBarbera 29% (513 votes)
Jonathan Quick 1% (21 votes)
Danny Taylor 0% (8 votes)
Jeff Zatkoff 1% (12 votes)
That’s right. Jason LaBarbera got nearly 25 times as many votes as Jonathan Quick.

Belanger! Besides great help in one of our weaker areas (faceoffs), he really fits the Kings style now and also brings much needed speed…
Will the last game of the regular season, Sunday, April 11th vs Colorado be for home-ice advantage in the first round for 4th vs 5th?

[Reply]
Good morning everyone. Didn’t check the site yesterday with a couple days off and all, but I voted 4th place. I’d love to see 1st or 2nd, but that’s not being realistic. Also looks like we have some Quack fans using our poll.
And “blah blah” As far as our winning/losing trend that you mentioned much earlier in this post, I wouldn’t worry too much about trends, each game is different with different circumstances, and I just don’t see the Kings losing two in a row, Ducks and then the Oilers? Not going to happen.

Off Topic-
Since there is so much talk about lineup changes in this thread, I am following suit. Here is my lineup for 2010-2011-
FORWARDS-in lines as shown
Ryan Smyth($6.250m) Anze Kopitar($6.800m) Justin Williams($3.500m)
Saku Koivu($3.250m) Jarret Stoll($3.600m) Dustin Brown($3.175m)
Alexander Frolov($4.750m) Michal Handzus($4.000m) Wayne Simmonds($2.075m)
Oscar Moller($0.875m) John Madden($2.500m) Brad Richardson($0.587m)
Brandon Segal($0.550m)
DEFENSEMEN
Drew Doughty ($3.475m) Rob Scuderi ($3.400m)
Matt Greene ($2.950m) Jack Johnson ($1.425m)
Sean O’Donnell ($1.250m) Davis Drewiske ($0.600m)
Peter Harrold ($0.583m)
GOALTENDERS
Jonathan Quick ($1.800m) / Erik Ersberg ($0.750m)
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS
ROSTER: 22; PAYROLL: $58.809m; CAP ROOM: $1.044m BONUSES: $3.053m
Give Frolov 4.75 mill (up from 2.9), sign him for three years. Get Koivu, sign him to 2 year deal at that money, or 3 year deal with lower money 3rd year. Give Simmonds a raise from 1.062 mill to 2.075 mill and sign him for 4 years. Get John Madden, sign him to two year deal at 2.5, (down from his Chicago deal at 2.750 for this year only) Platoon Segal and Moller depending on opponent, Segal for size and Moller for speed.
Drop Jones, keep O’Donnell, drop Purcell, drop Parse to Manchester and first in line for callup, keep Harrold for versatility and platoon with O’Donnell resting O’Donnell every 4th game.
Put Madden on 4th line and PK, Koivu at left wing (shoots left, he’s older and wing is less demanding than center), put Richardson back at R wing which is his more natural wing.
You are then super deep down center, which is never a bad thing. You add a Captain from Montreal and Stanley Cups from New Jersey. You keep Frolov, and with that line (Zus/Fro/Simm) (the other team sweats bullets imagining the fatigue and momentum loss when we keep the puck for 45 second shifts and then score on them).
You have options galore with so many centers, experience, and leadership. You own the faceoff dots with Stoll, Zus, and Madden. You have 1 mill in cap space if O’Donnell retires, to sign a 1.5 mill D-man from somewhere…
If you want to bring up Bernier, (as backup for his first year) you have cap space to do so and Ersberg would be a decent trade for a D-man, or a 2nd or 3rd round pick
I could go on and on, and usually would…

So my thoughts for the rest of the way…what do you guys think? not that any of this matters but I am jones-ing for Kings news…am probably going to be a wreck when the olympics start.
Barring significant injuries / trades, I see the Kings going 15-8 down the stretch giving them around 105 points positioning them at 4 (i voted 5th initially) If quicker gets 13 out of those 15 wins (not unrealistic) he gets the record which is not really that important but is another feather is his cap.

Mark 1- who is LS? Hope I am not being stupid…
Old man- Thanks, but not really all that hard. Koivu plays in Anaheim, very visible, I really wanted Madden last year. CapGeek dot com made the roster, you just plug in numbers and they total up the cap space for you, then I put those guys in lines.
Didn’t mention, Versteeg would be interesting, same money as Koivu, but he is unde contract so he would require a trade. I am not willing to give up anybody in his salary range to get him. Madden and Koivu are UFA’s this summer.
Mark 1- I like the names but fear the total makeover of a team culture that took 3-4 years to develop, plus it is counter to what DL has been preaching to the team…
I just operated under these imperatives- Keep Fro, keep core, get utility with scoring touch for left wing, get penalty killer and cup-winning experience/leadership.

[Reply]
Luke Schenn?
[Reply]
Okay Mark, I get it. Schenn will need to be brought along. We are in a position of depth that we can platoon guys like Schenn into a winning lineup without counting on them to take full time roles. Schenn would be too early next year, he needs to learn, develop, grow, and earn a spot.
[Reply]
Ray Whitney?
[Reply]
4th place is great but that 4th spot scares the crap out of me…..its not as great as you may all think.
It puts all the pressure on our young guys in their very first playoffs. When you’re in the 8th or 7th spot, there’s not pressure, no one expects you to win.
And for all my friends that think playing Phoenix is going to be easy or be the best match up, think again! I rather play the Sharks in the first round since they usually lay an egg. Phoenix on the other hand has played incredible defense all year long and we have not. They have the goaltending and the patience to wait for our young guys to make mistakes….trust me we don’t want the Yotes in the first round….Anyone but them and maybe Chicago!
[Reply]
I think this means a deal is brewing up here, let’s see what happens
[Reply]
Surprised about Segal on waivers. I liked Brandon. Can’t believe they chose him to waive over Purcell at this point.
Whitney’s coming. Mark my words. I have no real data, just a hunch. This move tells me so. Parse is going to be on the 4th line now. At least he didn’t get sent down.
It’s all speculation though, we’ll see what happens.
[Reply]
How come Segal had to go on waivers? Why couldn’t he have been sent down to Manchester? I’m assuming he has a two-way contract. I don’t think the Kings are maxed out on number of contracts either…?
[Reply]
Well, there’s no other explanation but a deal about to go down for the Kings……. Ray Whitney anyone?

LS is Luke Schenn (is it one N or two N’s).
Good points…I am wondering if they will bring Fro back though, and make no mistake, I am down with Fro! I am not sure they will.
I too was looking at UFAs and guys I know their teams would like to trade. The Schenn Dog has to be up next year right? He is the next MD (the MD from the Colorado ‘Lanche).
I have posted before that I thought the Kings are really missing one whole line. It seems that way sometimes. Do you think this looks like too big a shake-up?
(of course, all of this is looking towards next year, even though there is alot of this year yet to go!! Just get to the second round and anything can happen!!)

Ya, I’m still trying to figure out why Segal would be put on waivers… i hope a deal is about to go down, andrew cogliano, please DL, please.. and it better not be jonathan cheechoooooo
[Reply]
Anyone know where do we stand on being able to send guys down to Manchester right now? Can’t someone go down without being placed on waivers? Moller? (not that I want that, but what’s the deal?)
[Reply]
Segal probably went down because of his age. I’d personally like to keep him around, but I would assume that a roster player is coming in because why else would he be clearing space? He should have sent Purcell. or JONES!
[Reply]
Segal probably had to clear waivers** because of his age. sorry bout that.
[Reply]
It depends on their contract waves.. from what i understand Moller would not have to pass through waivers. But he is on the big club for good i think.
My vote is still for a 4th line centre, and then move the Mole up to 3rd line RW.. or 1st line RW for a bit and Simmonds back with Fro and Zeus
[Reply]
Before the Kings signed him Segal had been an AHL player all the way back to ‘03-’04 so I’m guessing he had to clear waivers to be sent back down.

I think this is how it will end up:
Smyth-Kopi-Brown
Whitney-Stoll-Richardson
Frolov-Zeus-Simmonds
Parse-Moller-Ivanans/Purcell

I doubt Whitney will be traded to the Kings now. They already had a trade for him done and he refused because he wants a 3 year extension. No way DL gives him that.
I’d say the Kings are either going after Raffi Torres or Alex Ponikarovski.

If he plays with Kopi, then he is a setup man, which is exactly what is needed on that line on the left side.
This is why I think RS with Stoll has at times looked like a better fit for him.

Segal being on waivers doesn’t necessarily suggest a trade is imminent. The only way it would is if we are trading for a roster player without giving a roster player back (picks and prospects only) or giving up one roster player in exchange for 2 which seems unlikely, but I suppose anything is possible – maybe with a team looking to dump salary?
But it seems odd, unless we’re calling someone else up – I can’t wait to hear what Rich has to say about this.
