Postgame notes (Feb. 6)

– The Kings have now won a franchise record nine consecutive games. The Kings are 11-1-0 in their last 12 games.

– The team record for most consecutive games with at least one point is 11 (9-0-2), set in 1973-74.

– The Kings now have 75 points this season. The only other Kings club to have more points after 58 games was the 1974-75 team (79 points). The 2009-10 team is the fastest Kings club to reach 36 wins.

– The last time the Kings trailed by three goals in a game and won was March 5, 2009 vs. Dallas (down 3-0 and won 5-4 in OT).

– The Kings are now 20-8-3 in one-goal games.

– Michal Handzus, with two goals and one assist, had his second consecutive three-point game. Handzus has eight points in his last five games (four goals, four assists). Handzus also scored his team-high sixth game-winning goal (the Kings’ single-season record is nine).

– Jonathan Quick (20 saves) has won nine consecutive starts in goal and is 14-3-0 in his last 17 games. Quick is one win away from tying Mario Lessard for the club record in wins for one season (Lessard had 35 in 1980-81).

– Ryan Smyth has recorded at least one point in four consecutive games, with two goals and two assists.  He has nine points in the last 10 games (five goals, four assists).

– Alexander Frolov, with one goal and one assist, had his second straight multi-point game.

– Anze Kopitar had his eight-game point streak (which tied a career high) snapped when he did not record a point.

– The Kings went 0-for-3 on the power play but 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.

– Alexander Frolov had a team-high six shots on goal, Dustin Brown had a team-high four hits and Peter Harrold had a team-high three blocked shots.

– Drew Doughty led the Kings in ice time, at 27 minutes, 23 seconds. Anze Kopitar led all Kings forwards at 25:36.

Girlfriend showed up in a red-and-black sweater, noticed by both T.V. announcers… After the first intermission, they called her out on the air, and she took off the offending red color… And the Kings scored 4 goals unanswered afterwards!

This will forever be known as the Kings’ Heidi Game.

Wow! What a game. Love shutting up all those Red Wing fans! Even when they were down 3 goals, the Kings kept fighting. Years past, that would not have happened – they would have all but folded up the tents and gone home if they were down three to a team like Detroit. This year, they fight and claw and scrap and they got themselves the win. Great job! Keep it up Monday. Let’s keep our streak alive and ruin the home streak for the Quacks!!!

It’s great to have won 9 straight and get some love from the Gods of Luck, I just hope the Kings address their play in the last 4 periods which hasn’t been good (gave up 6 goals in 4 periods). Speed is giving them problems and hopefully TM can get everyone on the same page as to how to combat that.

There’s something I’ve noticed about quick especially during this streak. He has games where he’ll let in a few goals, then he turns his force field on and won’t let on any more goals. I’m sure it partly has to do with team D as well, but quick reminds me of Rocky right now: he’s got to take a few punches to get himself worked up, to get angry, then he’s unbeatable.

Man while watching the game I was getting that feeling of the 92-93 season. Do you guys remember that season? Playoffs, overtime and those crazy wins? Anyways man just digging this team. I’ve been believing in them since the beginning of the season and they are really starting to come together. Fro is an absolute genius with the puck. I don’t know how he’s able to stick handle with three guys around him and still hold on to that damn thing! He may not score a lotta goals but that’s ok his ability to hold the puck makes up for it. If it wasn’t for Fro and his puck handling ability Zus wouldn’t have scored. The dead wings would have cleared the puck from the zone one way or another.

Parse – looked good tonight. Got your hustle back. Maybe you were just thinking too much those last few games. Don’t do that! That will kill your game!

Brownie – finally starting to play like the Brownie we all know! Great hits, some steals and overall playmaking.

    Quick – another solid game!

Yeah a coupla mistakes here and there but that’s just hockey. We came back and won! Solid comeback! Cmon boys Ana-slime next! Work em!!!! :)

Fro-Zus-Parse were strong; but then again, any time Frolov takes the puck to the net more times than he passes to the point his line is going to do very well. It’s all about getting him to turn TO the net.

On the down side: two more goals scored against us by a wide-open man on the far post; one with Simmonds staring at the puck and the other with OD staring at the puck. C’mon guys, you’ve heard it since Mites: Get your head on a swivel!

But it really chapped my hide to see that many Wings fans there, I had to do something to lessen their enjoyment of coming into our barn like that!

Before we get too excited, the recent slow starts are getting to be a concern. If we want to continue the win streak and the march towards a playoff spot, we cannot continue to “steal” points. We have to earn them for 60 minutes and not just get lucky.

Is it difficult, or at least annoying, to deal with all the fans that show up from the opposing team? I was just watching the game highlights and it seemed like half the lower bowl in view of the camera was cheering when the Wings scored. 83. PakiFro says:

The best part is that its not one line doing the damage.

Today, the Fro/Zeus line took over. A few games ago in Toronto, Brown/Stoll/Smyth sealed it. And of course, Kopi/Simmonds/Richie have had their share of good games, most notably in Detroit. If you have three lines that click like these guys are, it really is hard to control. Who do you focus on if you’re the opposition? Today the wings shut down Kopitar, only to suffer the same fate as the last time the teams met. Lets hope they keep up the intensity from the second period. They’re playing with fire by giving up three goals in a period twice in two games.

A Kings/Phx first round matchup could pit the two hottest teams in the conference going into the playoffs. The division leaders aren’t being seriously challenged at this point and could head into the playoffs on auto-pilot. There is serious potential for one of the big dogs to be booted out in a second round upset by either LA or Phx.

But it’s still a long way away and the effects of the 2 week Olympic shutdown remain to be seen. I just hope we get through that tournament with all of our Olympians in one piece.

1st, the other day i suggested/guarenteed we would get Dustin Penner. These rumors NEVER existed, and aparently i was wrong, but my hunch of Edmonton as a trading partner will be correct. There is a rumor DL is looking at Ethan Moreau. I think he is their Capt. He doesnt have a lot of points, but a great presence on the 3rd or 4th line…we will see.
Kings will win the 1st round. I feel like Phoenix shouldn’t hang onto that spot, but like the Kings, they are so far out ahead, they would have to have a miserable finish to the season to drop. A team like Dallas or Anaheim or even a healthier Detroit will climb into the playoff picture, a team like Nashville or Calgary will drop. My predicted standings,-

    San Jose
    Chicago
    Vancouver
    Los Angeles
    Phoenix
    Colorado
    Detroit
    Nashville

    Watch Detroit make it.

The Kings are capable of going to the finals. Teams in front of us are “points getters” in the regualar season. Kings have been playing that grinding style needed in the playoffs and it will show. We should make it to the finals.

    Parsey was great!

Friday I was saying Parse should be in there on the 3rd line, because he’s a difference maker when he plays well.

    Parse: Passing action
    Frolov: Puck control
    Handzus: Net presence

    A great combination!
With Parse there is more puck movement!
And the line is more successful!

The game last night was great, I was chatting with some annoying Red Wings fans who were knocking on Bob and Jim before the game, felt good to shut them up. But above all, this is the loudest I have heard the Kings fans at Staples Center since… well, ever? That made it feel all the more like a “playoff” game…

Welcome back Rich! I just lost my sister a few days ago, and even though I know she’s in a better place right now, it’s still really tough. I just wanted to remind you that I know we’re all here for you, and each other, and never forget with this Kings family you’re NEVER alone!

    Okay my game notes…

At around 11:30 left in the 2nd period Bob Miller mistakenly identified Segal for Purcell. Poor Segal!!!

The 1st period reminded me of the old RW’s. It always seemed like they had at least 6 guys on the ice… Whenever the puck hit a stick or bounced there seemed to be 3 RW’s and 1 Kings player(s)… Also, they seem to run a lot of very subtle picks… If you watch the first goal, I dare say one of these very subtle picks opened things up for them.

Okay, regarding that friggin, “WOW, that’s a low price!” Staples commercial – Attention Staples – you just lost a customer!!!

re: Heidi’s sweater… I doubt I’ll be able to outbid Foxy, but as long as the money’s going to the charity of Heidi’s choice, I’ll start the bidding at $100 for the sweater if the, ummmmmm, front is autographed by Heidi.
    :)

Just my opinion but I would be okay if Kopi never took a slap-shot again. His wrister/snapper is, like Ovechkin’s, SICK… and more importantly usually hits the net, unlike his slap-shot!

Staples was finally rocking… Why can’t we do this for this team every game?

Can someone PLEASE tell me why Fro, at 6’4″, rarely hits anyone? And when he does it’s rarely much of a hit anyway. This guys is often in a position to cleanly plaster people through the boards but just doesn’t. Now before you go on to tell me that it’s just not his style/game, hear me out… In my opinion if he DID he would wear the defensemen down even more than his cycling already does. Put a hitting Fro together with the cycling Fro and we’ve got tired D-men in the 3rd period… Get it?

I’ll say it again and scream it from the rooftops… Zeus is the most complete underrated player in the NHL!!! As far as trades etc, he’s untouchable simply because of all the little things he adds to the team that you would have to have 2 or 3 different players to fill in his absence… Someday he’ll be a great coach, and we’re reaping the benefits of those smarts and little intangibles right now!!!

    Simmonds = stud… DUH!!!

    Uummmmm, how valuable is Smyth?

LIDSTROM said: “We came out with a good push and got rewarded with scoring some goals. In the second, we didn’t play well enough in front of our own net. They were crashing the net hard. We didn’t do enough to get those key rebounds. We needed a 60-minute game today.”

ALL 4-goals were created by crashing the net… Enough said!!!

Kings have the most shootout wins.
Kings have the most road wins in the league.
Kings are 6 full games ahead of 9th place, and 9th place is Detroit (bonus nyuk). If we go .500 in our last 24 games getting 24 points, we finish with 99; that other team needs to get 36 points out of their last 24 games, like 15-3-6, or 16-4-4…

Only a limited number of channels were available. So people across the country would be looking forward to special shows or movies that would come on (like the Wizard of Oz once a year). And it was a shared experience, and not just for sporting events.

The teams in front may be point getters but they also play the Kings pretty well. And the Kings need to adjust before the playoffs.

Teams now pressure the Kings half board game (both ends) and point men.

Breakouts are being pinched forcing more “behind the net” breakouts and defensive zone turn overs. In turn neutral zone stick to stick passing is harder.

So far Kopitar’s amazing physical strength along with the excellent body positioning by the forwards going after the puck have carried the team.

I wonder how long can these “one bounce” games can go on before the Kings adjust or the tables turn?

I hope to see the Kings looking even greater for the playoffs.

For Utah and anyone else who cares.

I attend all home games and many times have fans for the opponents in my section (334). Always a Canadian invasion especially during the winter. Majority of these people are decent fans there to root for their team and enjoy the game. I find that the worst visiting fans are Ducks fans and Detroit fans. I don’t have a problem with people rooting for their team but do have a problem when they feel the need to be rude. Hey we are all there to enjoy the game so why create a problem and an uncomfortable enviornment?

I went to SJ to the Jan 4th game and worried about how I would be treated. I was amazed as the SJ fans were very nice and actually enjoyed most of the people sitting around us. Even better we won 6-2 so yeah, I got a few comments after the game but nothing offensive or rude.

The one thing I wish we as LA fans would do would be to appreciate all players for their efforts. Why boo a 1st, 2nd or 3rd star simply because he is on the opposing team. He did his job well and deserves to be cheered. I would love LA to set the tone by changing these boo’s to cheers. (Of course we are the only arena I know of to shout some team sucks when the organist plays the song) and that will change only if the music stops playing. And I admit I participate with the rest of the crowd.

At the SJ game, Thornton recorded his 900th point and it was mentioned. We applauded him and SJ fans around us were surprised and asked us why. Our response “he deserved it for his achievement”. The point was against us but it is still something that is worthy of recognizing.

Let us not forget that these men are working hard doing their job to the best of their ability. Respect the players, respect those around you and let everybody enjoy the game.

May the strength of family and friends support you Rich during this difficult time. My prayers are with you.

We’re gonna see the usual WSH/PGH/NYR/PHI/BOS/NJ/CHI/DET rotation… maybe even a little SJ/ANA/COL, and BUF.

    25 Florida Panthers
    26 Columbus Blue Jackets
    27 New York Islanders
    28 Carolina Hurricanes

    30 Edmonton Oilers

I understand the jingoistic politics of the Game of the Week, driven by NE-centric ratings. I understand the CBC Hockey Night in Canada, getting the Canadian games. I even understand the Versus CHI-centric alternate universe.

But NBC: Can’t you see the potential ratings in playing a little L.A. Kings Saturday or Sunday Afternoon magic?

    SAT FEB 13, 2010 AVALANCHE/ KINGS
    SAT MAR 6, 2010 CANADIENS/ KINGS
    SUN MAR 14, 2010 PREDATORS/ KINGS

    SAT APR 3, 2010 DUCKS / KINGS
    SAT APR 10, 2010 OILERS / KINGS
    SUN APR 11, 2010 KINGS / AVALANCHE

How about a little Freeway Faceoff magic? Or, two young teams on the rise with LA/COL? Or, even better, a nationally televised rematch of the ’92-’93 Cup, Saturday March 6th, right after the Olympics?

A little national network Kings love is in order, IMHO!

I guess I’m about as rude as any of the rude fans. Once, as I was leaving the Forum after the Islanders beat us on a goal they scored with five seconds left on the clock, I saw a guy in an Islanders’ jersey in the parking lot and shouted “Hate!” at him, stomped my feet and kept chanting “Hate! Hate! Hate! Hate!”

Not exactly good sportsmanship, I know. But the Islander fan just gave me a smug winner’s smile and walked on. The louse.

I’ve gone to games at the old Boston Garden and the old Chicago Stadium and the Philadelphia Spectrum. Part of the joy of being there was the thrill of the abusive yak and the lunacy of the banners. At the Spectrum for a Flyers-Rangers game I saw Ron Duguay’s effigy hanging from a balcony. The guys who put it together made a mop of his hair to resemble how he looked in real life.

In Boston for a play-off game where the Bruins were losing, the section I was in hollered “Faggots” at the then Hartford Whalers whenever they iced the puck to get it out of trouble. That was actually the NICEST thing that was said.

Chicago has got to have the most intense sports fans I’ve ever seen. The old Stadium was absolutely the loudest building I’ve ever been in and the organ sounds seemed to crush down on you from out of the sky.

In all those places I never feared for my safety, no matter whom I cheered for.

But once, at a Kings-Flyers game at the Forum, there was a lynch-mob atmosphere that scared me silly. Fights were popping up everywhere and guys were being marched out in hand-cuffs. It was one of the ugliest nights I’d ever spent at a sporting event.

By the way, what was all the fuss about Heidi Androl wearing a sweater and then taking it off? (It’s not like she took off all her clothes along with it.)

Do either one of them know any question other than “how did it feel when … blah blah blah”, “the team looks confident, what do you feel”.

What do I want to hear? I want to hear questions like “I noticed the team has gone to sending only 1 in on the forecheck and it seems the other team is breaking out much easier, the team seems more comfortable with sending in two”. Or “looks like Brown is getting under so n so’s skin a bit”.

There is friendly rivalry and there is borderline absusive behavior out there. Don’t think for a minute I was quiet yesterday when we scored our 4th goal. Nothing makes my day more then turning to high 5 a fan for the other team and then looking at them and saying “Oh, sorry”. My only issue is when people take it too far.

I agree with you about the trading of players and the booing too. Its a business first. I wasn’t too happy about what Blake did but if my possible last year of generating an income was $5 mil instead of $3, I would jump on it in a heartbeat. And if anyone here says otherwise…BS. Money beats loyalty and Blake made the smarter move. He couldn’t afford to play the waiting game at his age and even though he is making much less now, he is still earning income and playing the game he loves.

My response to obnoxious Detroit fans…there is a reason they took the midnight train going anywhere!

Why would you not boo Blake for bailing on us but you would boo a guy who played well enough to earn a star? Just curious.

    or
“we just gotta keep playing our game”
    or,
“the puck came across and I got lucky”
    and so forth…
