Open Forum time

With the Kings’ day off today, and a lot of excitement around, it’s a good time for an Open Forum. For our friends new to this blog, it’s simply an opportunity to post any Kings-related question that I, or your fellow readers, might be able to answer. There were a few questions on the previous post, so I’ll pick those up first, but feel free to ask any question you might have…

Could you check in with Justin Williams and see how he’s feeling and holding up. What does he do during his recovery, before he can start actively rehabbing? When will that start?

    RICH-

First of all, as usual, nice work!

Second- I have an idea for a down day like today, how about a poll of the fans who post here on how long ago they became a fan of the LA Kings. Great way for all of us to see what your reaching demographic is and just satisfy our curiosity.

I’d put the choices up as:

    -This year
    -Last 5 years
    -2001 playoff series
    -Last 10 Years
    -Last 15
    -1993 Playoff Cup Run
    -Last 20
    -Gretzky Comes to LA
    -Last 25 and more
    -Since 1967 (The Beginning)

I put those few moments because I kow fans who have become fans because of those moments. Hopefully you can do it and it doesn’t take too much effort.

    Once again, thanks!

Oh Yeah, someone else mentioned before about the JJ hit on Smyth and if they have ever talked about it. I know Brownie had a good one on Smitty too (I have it as a desktop picture on one of my computers.) Don’t remember those being discussed, but it would be cool to visit or revisit Smitty’s thought on those hits if he even remembers them.

Rich — apologies if this has been answered before, but I’m still confused about Patrick O’Sullivan’s citizenship. Up until he was traded to Edmonton, his birthplace was always listed as North Carolina. Once he was traded to Edmonton, and as late as last week, his birthplace is listed as Toronto, Ontario. I understand dual citizenship, but he couldn’t have been born in two different places. He’s played for the US in international competition, so I’m just wondering if you can enlighten me?

    Question for the open forum:

As i just about drove off the road yesterday while listening to the incredible ending of the Devils game, Nick Nickson mentioned Bernier’s second shutout in two days. That led me to comment to my Brother in Law (not a big hockey guy from Oregon) that I could see Bernier plus JJ for Ilya being a viable trade. His response was shy mess with the enormous chemistry that seems to exist on the King right now.

    Interesting point….thoughts?

Did you see Don Waddell and Dean or Ron Hextall talk with each other at the New Jersey game? If not do you know if they met?

Can you give a status on Justin Williams and how he is coming along.

  7. Ryan says:

I know you mentioned it the other day, but the rumor mill is really heating up with Don Waddell and Den Lombardi meeting just yesterday during the Kings/Devils game. What can we expect to happen? It sounds like if they dont get Ilya they would go after a guy like Ray Whitney. But who do you give up? The team is totally gelling and I hate to break this up…..your thoughts…..

Thanks for everything Rich. We are so fortunate to have you and thanks to the organization as well.

I would like for you to talk to Justin Williams and see how he is doing. How is his attitude? Maybe some details on his injury and recovery.

Also, do the kings ever address the mental side of the sport? By this, I mean do they use sport psychology, positive mental attitude counseling, etc?

  9. What's the frequency, Kenneth? says:

What do you think about the goaltending situation, Rich?

We’re all glad to see Quick playing well, and the team supporting him well, but with that comes the fact that Ersberg, who TM now claims to have faith in, has been squeezed out of a few opportunities to play. Do you think Ersberg will suddenly get a lot of opportunities down the stretch, or do you think TM is going to try to use Quick’s Olympic break (providing he doesn’t actually play) as a chance to rest him? (I’m thinking Ersberg needs at least a couple good outings before the playoffs.)

The other half of the question is, do you think Lombardi’s now more inclined to believe he might be able to spare a goaltender in a trade? I’m thinking maybe, but probably not, as Quick and Bernier both figure in as way too valuable to consider trading at this moment and trading Ersberg, if possible, would almost mandate bringing Bernier up instead of giving him a shot at playoffs in the minors.

    1) Are you just as surprised as I was about the blockbuster “hockey” trades Burke was able to pull off ? Don’t see too many of those nowadays.

    2) How many of the NHL team blogs listed on the right do you follow ?

    3) The Kings seem to be so focused on winning right now but do you sense any concern from the players about whether they will be traded ?

    4) Do you think the “dominoes will start to fall” now that Burke made his trades ? Or do you think that was more of an exception to the current trade environment ?

Curious what a typical day (both game days and off days) is like when the team is on an extended homestand. On non-game days, what time do players get to the rink, how long do practices last, what do they do after practice (do they hit the gym, watch game films, just hang out)? On game days I always hear of a “morning skate.” Where does that take place? Is it structured, or just players stretching, and loosening up at their own pace? Do the players then go home, and come back for the game, or do they stay together?

    2. Do you think Ryan Smyth would best be suited as the Kings captain and just let Brown step back and worry about developing his game? It’s done wonders for Marleau.

    3. Being a proud Canadian, I’m curious what your thoughts are on coming up here for road games. Have you had good experiences so far? Have you had a good poutine yet?

Rich, do you believe that Dean Lombardi is willing to give up assets for a rental who will only be here for a short duration? Or, is Dean looking to make a deal similar to the Williams trade, where he obtains a player who is signed beyond this season?

It seems as though the most attractive names on the market (Kovalchuk, Whitney, Ponikarovsky, etc.) are all short term solutions.

Also, if the Kings are to go after another defenseman, what type of player will the Kings pursue? A puck mover or a crushing stay-at-home type? It seems like another physical presence could help, but, the Kings could also use help moving the puck faster out of their zone. Someone like Kaberle can help the special teams…

To Rich or everyone in that matter: It seems to me a team can’t have two number one goaltenders. So if Quick proves himself a number 1 and Bernier comes up and proves himself a number 1, isn’t it likely one is moved?

  38. RealDrew says:

    1) I know it’s a different experience when you are reporting for a team, but are you enjoying the Kings success this year? 2) Are you secretly a fan of another team (if it’s the Ducks I’d advise you to plead the fifth)? 3) What pieces need to be added for the Kings to become real cup contender? 4) In two years who do you think will be playing goaltender for the Kings? 5) Which King player do you enjoy interviewing the most?

    Thanks for everything Rich!

  39. Berniernextroy says:

Rich can you see the Kings trading for either Ty Conklin, Manny Legace, Biron? A veteran with some playoff experience to have that insurance in case something happens with Quick. I wouldn’t trust Ersberg in important games since has only started 5 games, and Quick is on pace to start about 70 games.

Hey Rich; different type of question. By the short looks we’ve had during Kings broadcasts, i.e. when the players’ dads went to the PHX game, the Kings use a charter aircraft (Boeing 737) for road trips. Does the aircraft have any special type of/VIP layout? Anyone else gets to travel that way besides the team/support staff/announcers/yourself? Does the flight crew/cabin staff go to the games? Is the aircraft theirs (the Kings) for the entire season? Beats flying “the friendly skies” of United! Thanks!

    Hey Rich,

More of an idea than a question. I was wondering if it would be possible for you to do a feature on Bob and/or Jim and how they prepare for upcoming games. Also, I’d like to know more about their setup while calling games. Do they have a computer screen in front of them that tells them who is on the ice or are they just so good that they know every player all the time? That sort of thing.

Would this perhaps be something that would lend itself better to a Heidi Kings Vision segment or something? That way we could see their setup and have them describe it to us etc. If that would be better, perhaps you could suggest that to the Kings Vision folks. Thanks!

  43. kozak says:

    Rich -

the coaching staff seems to be in a quandry about what to do with Moeller. he starts on the 4th line due to lack of centers but seems to move up a line and play wing when Parse / Purcell don’t play the system. Management has already said that they envision him as a winger so is playing him at center right now the best thing for him?

I know you don’t like to address rumors but do you think it’s possible for DL to get a 4th line cneter so Oscar can move up and play wing on another line?

  44. kluka68 says:

Thanks for everything Rich! Your blog is by far the best informational site for LA Kings fans.
Questions: 1. DL in one of the interviews said that he is looking for the three players to improve this team. What do you think these players should be (forward, defense or goalie)?
    2. As of right now we are playoff team, but when do you think we will become contender team? Or should I say based on our young player’s development how long do you think it will take to become a contender? And if there is anything else in this transaction other then become more mature, confident and adding those three players which I mention before?

    Hey Rich,

Can you fill us in on how the trade process works for an NHL player?
Are they just called in my management and said here’s the decision
    And you are off thanks!?

What are the procedures of a player transitioning in or out of one
NHL franchise to the next? Is there a traditional protocal set by the
NHL or does every organization have their own way of going about
    the trade process…

Given that the March 3 trade deadline is approaching it would be very
Informative to know the trade processes from a players standpoint?

    1) Any news on Trevor Lewis, Thomas Hickey or Andrei Loktionov? I know the kings could use Lewis as a 4th line center and move Moller up to the Handzus and Frolov line.

    2) Why do you personally think the Oilers are struggling so much?

    3) Sticking with the Oilers, what would it take to get Andrew Cogliano? Purcell and a 2nd? Cogs isn’t really having a good year, so we could use that in our favor and try to rejuvenate his career?

    4) Colts or Saints for the Super Bowl?

I have a question for Bruce McNall that I hope you can ask him since he is back with the organization as an ambassador. In the new book ‘Gretzky’s Tears’, McNall admits that Gary Bettman, his hand-picked selection to lead the NHL, obviously turned out to be the wrong choice. As a fan all I can do is watch the NHL lose market share and respectability year after year and blame it on Bettman’s incompetence, but McNall knows more about what went on behind the scenes so what would cause him to come out now and make such a strong indictmemt against Bettman, especially when he is still in charge?

    2) Concerning goaltending, Now that quick is our bonafide #1, and I dont see Bernier as a permanent backup, where does that leave Bernier? Do you bring him up next year as a backup or leave him in the minors until needed (ie-injury)
    3) Can you ask Foxy, to ask the jacket when it is going to come out again?

  51. krushelnyski says:

When watching the games on tv this year, I’ve noticed FSW is consistently ‘late’ to catch stuff happening behind the play, be it pushing and shoving or full blown fights. It feels like the lead camera will continue following the puck after the whistle is blown for a good couple seconds before finally cutting to the fight, effectively missing the most exciting part of the action. I’m wondering if you had any insight into this, be it a conscious decision made by the NHL or FSW to limit the amount of fighting they show in games, or possibly the result of a change in personnel for the broadcasts? I realize it takes a moment to catch the action and frame a shot, but with the multiple cameras covering a game, you’d figure at least 1 angle would be tracking the shot enough to cut to for a few seconds. It’s just aggravating to hear the crowd amp up, Bob and Jim starting talking about it, but being stuck watching the puck slide into the corner only to finally be shown the last few seconds before the linesmen jump in.

Hey Rich, Once again, thank you for taking the time to do this, as well as all of the work that you do. Here is my question (re-posted from after the Columbus game), unless someone already asked: It relates to plus/minus and Kopi’s first goal in the Columbus game. On the goal, it started with a long outlet pass by Simmer to Smyth. By the time Kopi scored, Simmer had gone to the bench for a change, was off the ice and Brown was on the ice. Simmer got the assist but does Brown get the + since he was on the ice when the puck actually went into the net?

A question and a suggestion for a possible interview.

How did you enjoy the road trip back east aside from attending the games? What did you do with your free time? How tiring was the trip? Was it all you hoped it would be?

Is there an inside the organization story behind the acquisition of Brad Richardson? Who was responsible for recommending/deciding he was worth a second round pick? Brad had a rocky start right after he joined the team. Appeared to be a waste of a pick. Did the Kings doubt themselves after acquiring him? Whomever was responsible looks like a genius now.

    Rich,
I have a few questions regarding Frolov.

Do you feel he should be traded?
Do you feel he has lived up to his expectations?

At the beginnig of the year, and the last couple years, I thought he was an underachiver, someone who got by on natural skills alone and never wanted to get any better. But I have to admitt, I think he is doing great these last couple months. I ask what your thoughts are on trading him because, as with a lot of players on a contract year, I feel he may be playing harder just to get a good contract then go back to his lazy ways. What are your thougths on Frolov? He would be great trade bait, but I would want to get someone already estabilished, not any picks for him.

Thanks for the great job you do.

Tim Leiweke was the main proponent behind instituting the salary cap to end the lockout and he then declared that the Kings would now be able to compete on an even footing financially with every team in the league. Has AEG given the green light to Lombardi to pry open the company wallet and allow him to spend money on Kovalchuk or other free agents? Or was the salary cap talk just more hot air, laughable ignorance and broken dreams from AEG’s master salesman?

    [Reply]

  67. 1. I’m curious about the players living arrangements, both at home and on the road. Who lives with who, or by themselves? Who bunks with who on the road (I believe these pairings are consistent, right)?

    2. Also, was Dean on the entire recent road trip with the team, or did he show up partway through?

    3. Is there a growing buzz around the team about the Olympics, or are they keeping that off the table for the most part?

    4. Finally, do you think Simmonds’ fight against Mark Stuart on Saturday had anything to do with Ivanans coming out of the lineup against the Devils? Do you think that as players like Simmonds step up more in those situations, Murray will feel less and less like he needs Raitis to keep things in check?

Why waste time asking Rich about “what’s he heard about trades” stuff? If he was allowed to tell, he would of told. Besides, if they give him the okay to talk it is likely just being put out there for positioning reasons and not what is really going on.

Rich, I am wondering your number of hours per week you actually work. It seems you are a 24/7′er and wonder where you find time for a life?

What got me thinking about this was the passing of your mother was the same week as the passing of mine. My life was on hold for well over a week dealing with it.

Do you get paid by the Kings and did Luc give the final approval for your compensation for doing this blog? Luc seems to be doing extremely well at promoting the Kings.

My appology if these questions cross over the line. Just ignor them if it does.

Thanks Rich. I feel fortunate to have you and thanks to the Kings also.

Wondering, I have a Kings tattoo, what could we do to open a forum where we all send in our pic’s representing with our Kings tat’s? Ive met quite a few fans with cool kings art, it would be cool to check out. Maybe “Kings tat night” segment??

Thanks for the open forum again Rich!

Just a silly question from a hockey geek. I noticed that Ryan Smyth seems to play with a stick that is short for his height and and Jarret Stoll plays with a stick that seems much longer than his height would dictate. Have you ever talked with either of these guys about this? I imagine the longer stick of Stoll is for leverage, I don’t know whether for his shot or faceoffs. Any ideas?

    Rich, great job.

What are some of the challenges you’ve faced so far working for the Kings? What has been a rewarding part of your job that you did not expect?

Have there been any prospects that have been talked about by DL or others that are exceeding expectations? (Any prospects really getting noticed in a positive way)

Keep up the great work Rich.

real lucky for me to have such a great writer for a sports team i follow. millions of thanks to you rich.

    1) what player is missing the most teeth?
    2) how is Lombardi intending to handle having 2 potential starters in the franchise? especially when one is pulling such a heavy load. i know the “you can’t have too many good pitchers” comment, but really, there’s only one spot for a starter.

    Hey Rich,

Someone a while back mentioned that it would be cool to get a little piece done on each different area of the team…i.e. a little profile on Harpo and how he runs the D, Kompon and the PP, and Billy and the goalies.

As that might be a bit involved, your interview with Ranford last week that touched on each of the goalie’s within the Kings system was very insightful. I’d love to hear Hardy’s thoughts on our D players and prospects and Kompon/Murray’s thoughts on each of our current forwards and prospects.

As always, thanks for your work!

    Hi Rich,

    A couple questions of a one-track-mind nature:

    1) Is there the journalistic equivalent of what Dean Lombardi refers to as the “butt tattoo”? (i.e. some lasting “mark” of initiation that reflects, maybe, the high school or college paper where you cut your teeth in the trade, or your favorite source to read when you were young?)

    2) The next time you get a chance, can you ask Deano if he has a butt tattoo and, if so, what it is? I’m sure I’m not the only one who wants to know.

    Thanks!

As always… Damn, Rich, you are one sexy blogger.

    Hi Rich,

Since everyone is focused on trades I’ll keep with the topic.
    1) In a typical situation how long after a trade is finalized by the GM’s does it usually take to go public?
    2) If and when a trade goes down, any chance of that news breaking on this site. I think it would be a real treat for the loyalist to get the info first.

    Rich,

I was wondering if you could give your opinion on which of Dean Lombardi’s “boxes” have been filled. Obviously Doughty would fill that 1A Defenseman, Kopi would be the top line center etc. Second question, what is your take on Quick’s pedestrian statistics? He is 21st in the league in goals against average, 27th in save percentage, and tied for 24th in shutouts. Obviously there are some aspects of his game that do not show up in the stats such as his ability to play a “heavy” game or his ability to play so many nights without rest. That being said, would you agree that Quick is not an elite NHL goaltender? Thanks again for all your hard work.

  83. Pauline says:

Isn’t there a problem on some level when coaches like the Kings’ Terry Murray applaud the actions of Wayne Simmonds for retaliating on an admittedly clean hit without regard for what the officials might have called? I fully understand that Mark Stuart checked Kopitar and the unwritten code is to avenge the hit your best player took, but it was not a dirty hit and Kopi had his head down and was obviously fair game.

Why bother to have the refs on the ice to make calls if the players are going to disregard or in this case not even consider their calls? And how does it make the NHL look (not that they need any help in the black eye dept.) when a Coach defends the actions of his player who decided to retaliate and put the Kings on the penalty kill? Sometimes it seems like Coach Murray believes he is still with the 1970s Flyers conveniently forgetting their violent image set the league back decades to the point that most sports fans even today still vastly overestimate the level of violence in the average NHL game and stay away in droves as a result.

First off, I am still amazed at the amount of things you put up here, and very thankful for it. Your hard work makes following the Kings from 8 time zones away enjoyable :) So thank you once again!

As for questions, here’s one I thought of as I was watching the New Jersey game… I saw it with the NJ commentators and sometimes they had little tidbits of information about Kings players or the Kings this season while other times they missed what I felt were obvious segways. This made me think: do the commentators of different teams, particularly when east meets west like this, ever get together to talk about each others teams to get some tidbits to mention on the air about the other team? An information exchange, if you will?
Would be a question to put to Jim and Bob if you don’t know it yourself :)

Oh, and what sort of equipment do you use? I would imagine a voice recorder (maybe an iPhone these days, I think I may have seen you mention one at some point) and a laptop (pc or mac?) with a 3G internet connection for the out-of-wifi-coverage occasions?
