A popular guy

Drew Doughty, quite naturally, was a popular interview target this week, given that he grew up in London, Ontario, a two-hour drive from Toronto, and that, next month, he will represent Canada in the Olympics. Doughty was asked about the games, but first he was asked how it felt to play in Toronto for the [...]

Simmonds still rising

If I were to have a Kings player-popularity poll on this blog — which is actually an interesting idea, now that I think about it — I have to think that Wayne Simmonds would finish pretty high. It seems as though he might finish high on Terry Murray’s list as well. Murray was asked today [...]

Who are you guys?

Forgive the Toronto media if they’re not exactly up on the Kings. It’s been more than four years since the Kings played here, and as those of you East Coasters can attest to, it’s sometimes hard to get the Kings on TV. So that has led to a few questions, over the past couple days, [...]

Lineup change

After practice today, Terry Murray said — and I could hear him, even though he was next to the rink — that Raitis Ivanans would return to the lineup tomorrow night against Toronto. Terry Murray did not disclose which forward would come out of the lineup, because he said he hadn’t yet told the players. [...]

Delayed start

Was there a little gamesmanship in Toronto this morning? The Leafs had the practice ice first this morning, and when they left, the Zamboni came out to resurface. The driver stopped though, and came off the ice before the job was even half finished. Why? Because Leafs coach Ron Wilson does his daily media session [...]

Doughty in good company

Drew Doughty is obviously well regarded among Kings fans, and his popularity ratings are pretty high here in Canada as well. His legacy will only grow if he wins an Olympic gold medal with Canada next month. A local reporter, doing a feature on Doughty, asked Terry Murray if, in his years, he had seen [...]

Home, with a warning

This is the Kings’ first visit to Toronto since Dec. 2005, and it’s good timing for Wayne Simmonds, whose hometown of Scarborough is only about 20 minutes northeast of Toronto (or about 23 kilometers, since we’re in Canada). It will be Simmonds’ first game close to home since he joined the NHL. SIMMONDS: “It’s real [...]

Sunday practice update

No big news out of practice today. Players skated for about an hour before they were turned loose for the rest of the day. It’s a particularly big weekend for Wayne Simmonds, whose hometown is approximately 20 minutes outside of Toronto and who expects to have a large number of family members and friends in [...]

Afternoon in Toronto

It’s an early afternoon practice in Toronto, with all the Kings on the ice. The only change is another Parse-for-Purcell flip, with Parse moving back up to the third line with Frolov and Handzus. The practice facility here, not surprisingly, is quite nice, and we’re lucky to have some relatively mild weather. More to come [...]

Tonight's game story (Jan. 23)

Here’s my game story from tonight, complete with video and stats. Thanks for reading! Kings beat Red Wings 3-2

Murray postgame quotes

Terry Murray’s postgame thoughts… (on the win…) MURRAY: “That was a big win for us, for sure. Coming in here (and winning) is something that hasn’t happened much over the most recent years. We’ve had a couple of close games this year, right down to the last couple minutes, and could not pull it out. [...]

Harrold postgame quotes

Peter Harrold’s postgame thoughts… (on his goal, and the win…) HARROLD: “It’s a big win here. We haven’t won here in a while. That’s a good team, and they’re just behind us in the standings, so we needed that win badly. It was a timely goal, and a great goal by Richie to kind of [...]

Brown postgame quotes

Dustin Brown’s postgame thoughts… (on getting a rare win in Detroit…) BROWN: “Given the circumstances, it’s more special that we’re three points ahead of them now. Obviously we’ve had a hard time against them. We’ve played some good games against them and just haven’t got the result. Tonight was a huge moment for us, as [...]

Kopitar postgame quotes

Anze Kopitar’s postgame thoughts… (on Richardson’s play tonight…) KOPITAR: “Richie has been huge for us, with his intensity and his energy every night. He’s been playing really solid games. He’s been pretty much on our first penaly kill all this time now. He really uses his speed and his shot now, and it’s been paying [...]

Richardson postgame quotes

Brad Richardson’s postgame thoughts… (on the win…) RICHARDSON: “It’s always a tough building, coming in here. We got down early, when they had that 5-on-3, but we didn’t play too bad in the first. They kind of got those bounces but we played really good in the second and really good in the third, and [...]

FINAL: Kings 3, Wings 2

The Kings scored twice in the third period to start their five-game road trip with a big win. More from the locker room ASAP…

Kings 3, Wings 2

Mr. First Line, Brad Richardson, scored with 7:57 remaining in the third period to give the Kings the lead. Richardson got good position in front of the Wings’ net, took a pass from Scott Parse and beat Howard. Anze Kopitar got an assist for his third point of the night.

Kings 2, Wings 2

The Kings tied the game 6:27 into the third period. Anze Kopitar did the hard work to get the puck in the corner. Wayne Simmonds got it and made a quick pass to Peter Harrold in the slot, and Harrold beat Howard with a wrist shot when Scott Parse providing traffic in front. Also, in [...]

End of second: Detroit 2-1

The Kings outshot the Wings 11-7 in the period, and had its only goal, but still trail. Detroit is 17-0-4 when leading after two periods this season.
