Kings need some serious coaching changes on powder, umm, I mean “power” play. Tossin it back and forth up top is gettin real old…

Great win today. Is anyone else a little concerned with Jones’s puck handling, especially in our end?

His cough up today was reminiscent of others of late.

All came when he was the last man back and resulted in glorious scoring chances for the other team.

Quick saved him today, but I see this as a huge liability.

Sparman I totally agree he is annoying

  5. Steve S. says:

Agree. I’m nost sure why he is out there. Hopefully will not be in the lineup when Green and Drewiske are back. Really confusing is that his undisicplined play seems totally contrary to TM’s system.

  6. Arron says:

I disagree. I think you guys are reading too much into it.

  7. sasKing says:

Well, we DID get RJ off waivers. This wasn’t like the Quincey situation last year; Jones was on waivers for a reason.

On the other hand, he does have five goals, so that’s nice. And he’s not -16. Ahem.

Just back from the game/celebration. What a great time. A couple of observations:

The Kings play better when it is close to a full house. Maybe that is just part of youth being served.

Brown had a monster shift just prior to the first goal. He was also in Chara’s grill all night long.

Stoll, Richardson and Parse formed the best line. Constant pressure, hustle and intensity. Richardson set up a tent, camp stove and a fishing rock in the blue. Oh, and an ice chest full of Mikus’ favorite beer. Parse did fail to finish a check a couple of shifts before Boston’s first goal. He can not allow momentum to turn.

The defense did well with what they had. Quick saved some fine chances. OD took a smart penalty in the second to prevent a guy from walking out of the corner. Harold could have had a penalty called with a couple of minutes left. Our best D pair was on the ice for the third goal. We need the big boys to get back quick.

Boston fans seemed fine in our section, but we never seem to have a problem other than Flames fans.

Boy, one of the most entertaining games I have been to in years. Does anyone disagree?

I only have a half season so I wasn’t there today, but it was great to see Brown and Kopi win the game for us. Thomas skating away from the net in total frustration at the end of the game was priceless. He looked like he was ready to clock his own players.

The can-opener is what Foxi called the shoot out goals which made me laugh. Do you think that Kopi and Brown were on the bench when the coaches were trying to decide who to put out for the shoot out saying “I think I’m going to try the can opener” and “me too”?

I agree with much of what you say, Jet. Except the entertaining part. The shut down trap Boston played was not entertaining and watching the Kings try to beat it was like snorting chili powder. It was briefly entertaining at the end I thought, but I wasn’t there.

    re Randy JOnes:

Since he came aboard, the Kings are 14-7-1 with him in the line-up and 3-5-0 without him. He also leads all Kings defensemen in goals/60, assists/60, points/60 and GFON/60 (goals for on ice for per 60). His GA/60 is however the second worst among kings d, jj being the worst.

  12. PakiFro says:

I get the feeling jones is in there only cuz greene and whiskey are hurt. When he first got here, he was much better and almost deserved ice time. He was not great, but not this bad with his decision making and he was chipping in offensively seemingly every game. I don’t fault him for that breakaway though, just bad bounce there.

  13. Cynic says:

So what are you trying to say Q? LOL

Actually, all of those stats tell me he’s a “Right place at the right time” kind of guy.

Now, do you have a stat that tells me whether it has to do with his ability or just dumb luck? I gotta tell ya, he’s not the most stable looking d-man I’ve seen. I mean maybe this isn’t a fair comparison, but I could put my 11 year old son in net in that game for 5 minutes and if Boston never crosses the red line, my son has a 1.000 save percentage.

I can guarantee that Quick’s save on that breakaway sure saved Jones’s stats tonight. ;-)

Yeah it’s 3:30 in the morning.I,ve been out partying all night.I disagree with some of the critisizing RJ.I thought it was his best game since comming back. You guys weren’t too hard on him so,not a big deal.I also watched the game a couple of times and felt the Kings weren’t struggling. It was more the Bruins playing boring deffensive hockey.I’m glad the Kings were able to solve this. The Bruins had some good chances, but so did we.I didn’t see any quit on the Kings part, which made me really happy. This win was a huge caracter boost.

Great come from behind victory, these shootout wins are saving our butts . Regardless of what Terry Murray thinks he is lucky we got the shootout. I still feel we didn’t deserve to win .. Any team that doesn’t score on 2-2man advantages and 6-8 min of continuous powerplay shouldnt win a close game. Also way too many Boston fans they were so annoying i couldn’t even drink

For anyone who doubts the wisdom of acquiring Kovalchuk at this point, please watch a replay of this game. Kovy is a franchise player, something the current Kings roster is still missing.

    [Reply]

  20. Kenny says:

I agree that we should go after Kovalchuk – but at what expense? Who will we have to give up?

    [Reply]

  21. Cowboy Bill says:

Kenny – I think (my opinion only) that we can afford to give up a lot to get a franchise player. What do you think of this package – Hickey (or Martinez), Brown, Zatkoff, two future draft picks? Some places have rumored JMFJ on his way out of town, but I’d want to get a quality defenseman back in any deal of that sort. One place mentioned Souray?

    [Reply]

  22. Cowboy Bill says:

Forgot to mention – any deal for Kovy would have to include a contract extension already negotiated and signed before the trade would be finalized!

    [Reply]

  23. Dave says:

The Kings do have a franchise player but he plays D.

Agree w/ everyone criticizing Jones. He is a complete liability out there. Unless he directly contributes to a goal a game, he isn’t worth it.

    [Reply]

  24. Cowboy Bill says:

Dave, agree about Doughty, but you need an offensive end franchise player which is what we were talking about – either that, or Anze (as good as he is) needs to take a big step up. I thought Harrold played pretty well the past couple games on D – what did you think?

    [Reply]

  25. Arron says:

    Dave,

You show me a defenseman who contributes to a goal a game and I will say you are watching Paul Coffey. Not even Lidstrom contributes to a point a game. By your definition no defenseman in the league today is worth it. Cut Jones some slack he is not here to be a top two d-man on our team. Like someone else said already, he was on waivers for a reason.

All of this pick a player and throw him under a bus thing some of you do is sickening.

    [Reply]

  26. rick says:

I thought Harrold was very solid yesterday. Not for me to say sit this guy or that guy, but I do think that Harrold deserves more ice time at D based on yesterday’s game. Also, I am having a hard time understanding those on here who are less than happy with the victory yesterday. No, we didn’t play great for long stretches, but we had two very solid goals in the last 10 minutes against a quality team to send the game into overtime. What else do you want?

  27. number 6 says:

Arron, I agree with you. I have criticisms of the Kings. Mainly issues related to skill as it Translates to their 5 on 3 play. That and the mental lapses they have had early and late in periods and games (Detroit and St. L). That being said, I must say that the player beating does not sit well with me. And Even if it were accurate (which it usually isn’t), that’s not gonna change the Kings overall fortunes, and suddenly win them 7 more games a year. In fact it probably wouldn’t change their record much at all wrt L’s and W’s.

    [Reply]

  28. number 6 says:

In other words, getting rid of player X Y or Z isn’t gonna change much.

Pare slooked good skating across the middle of the zone, and around CHARA to set up stolls goal.

    [Reply]

  30. Cowboy Bill says:

Yes agree with John, I think Parse is a keeper.

If DL can negotiate an extended contract with Kovy before the deal is made, then do the deal. You don’t often get a chance to get a franchise front-liner like that – he is one of the league’s elite snipers!

    [Reply]

  31. shades says:

Was at the game. I’m not a hater as some like to call it. We need a franchise player like Kovi who can bury the puck on a 5-3 power play.

Take a look at the schedule for rest of home stand and the long road trip coming up.

Does anyone think the Kings will still be in a playoff spot after that?

Change the team by adding Kovi ASAP or suffer the consequences. Detroit is tied with Chicago in this mornings game and looks awesome…will probably win the game. Regardless, the Kings aren’t going to be able to hold off Detroit in the standings.

Just don’t see much hope. AFter these next 7 games or so, it should be over for the season unless they acuire a 40-50 goal scorer who can BURY THE PUCK.

    [Reply]

  32. Cowboy Bill says:

Shades, well said. Kings have a good roster, but the season is a marathon, not a sprint. Not sure if there will be another talent like Kovi available after the season should the Kings fall short. Players with skills like his are hard to come by.

    [Reply]

  33. Cowboy Bill says:

And I love Brown, but if he has to go to get Kovi, I’m ready to make the deal. As long as the contract extension is signed beforehand.

  34. Dominick says:

Wow the panic just keeps floating to the top doesn’t it!

    [Reply]

  35. Cowboy Bill says:

It’s not panic – it’s reality. Opportunities to pick up a bona fide sniper who can bury the puck don’t come along too often. If you believe otherwise, you are foolin’ yourself.

    [Reply]

  36. Dominick says:

Were doing just fine with out Gaboric,Hossa,Or any of those so called big free agent Resource draining players.Kovi is still up for grabs, and I doubt anyones going to get him soon. With the problems alot of teams like Chicago,Edmonton,Atlanta and a few others have in dealing with their future. There is going to be more than enough free agents and posssible trade incentive to add to this team soon. You guys calling for trades right this minute, even summing up our entire season to the next 7 games signals nothing but panic to me personaly.

  37. Quisp says:

    shades and cowboy –

The Kings will be better on the road than they are at home, and I really don’t think they’re going to fold.

However, I agree that snipers like kovalchuk don’t show up on the trade market every day. I’m sure that DL will do what is possible to do and also sure he won’t bend over backwards to make a deal. deal or not, i’ll bet it makes sense for us.

we’ll have a lot better shot of finishing strong and winning at least a round if we address the power play sniper, crusty mean bastard third liner, spare part vet d, and backup goalie issues. I expect at least two of those three will get addressed. probably not all four though.

i like randy jones. i don’t think he’s “right place at the right time” lucky, except in the sense that we need more of those guys. yeah, he’s prone to the cough-up. not as bad as jj, but with better o numbers.

  45. Player-X says:

For pete’s sake Cowboy Bill, is there anything in life for you other than Ilya Kovalchuk? IMHO, you completely miss the philosophy that Dean Lombardi has gone to great lengths to explain to us, the one he was signed to a 5 year deal for, the one that the entire organization, including the minor league affiliates, is following and is built around. DL is willing to be patient with excellent young talent, while that talent learns and develops together into a dangerous two way team with playoff style ability and grit. Trading multiple assets now for a one-dimensional player would be entirely contrary to what he has been telling these guys. And as a PS, not EVERY thread is related to Kavalchuk. Sure, people are interested, but that is what open forums are for. This thread was supposed to be about the game against the Bruins, not trade BS about some Russian sniper that has rarely been spotted below his own hash marks.

    [Reply]

  46. rick says:

I, for one, understand all the Kovalchuk talk. I think most people on this blog are true Kings fans who are dying to see this team get beyond the incredible frustration of the last several years. If you are looking at the team honestly, tbough, you cannot ignore the fact that our No. 1 need is a true, elite goal scorer. The top teams have at least one, maybe more – IMO we have none, and I don’t see one on the current roster or anywhere in the organization. I don’t know whether or not Kovalchuk makes sense, but I do know that anyone who cares about the Kings has the absolute right to believe that we will not get to the next level without an offensive superstar, and to push/prod/cajole until we get one.

    [Reply]

  47. Cowboy Bill says:

Ask Quisp if he thinks Kovi would be a GREAT addition to this roster. He seems to know a little bit more about hockey than most of us (you included). Plus, if well-informed hockey fans have already seen it printed in several places and many websites that the Kings have a HUGE interest in Kovalchuk. This is not just some rumor I have made up – this is well known in all hockey circles. Read and learn.

I am a lifelong Kings fan (since 1967) and watched yesterday’s game against the Bruins. It was a great victory – but shortsightedness will not get you into the playoffs.

If you think Lombardi is not already working night and day to get Kovi, then you are misinformed.

  48. Cowboy Bill says:

Rick, you are 100% on target.

    [Reply]

  49. Player-X says:

Bii, you are calling my decsription of Lombardi’s 5 year plan short sighted… And your saying that something is widely reported is inaccurate. The truth is there is widespread speculation. Kinda like you yourself mentioning it umpteen times, and then saying that it must be true because there are so many people talking about it. My main point is that not every single thread is the place to go on and on about the possible trade. As well, being a lifelong fan doens’t improve the accuracy or credibility of your opinion, nor does it diminish mine. I am just trying to read about the kIngs without having to endlessly and repeatedly endure the same things about the same things.

  50. Player-X says:

As a matter of fact, reading over your post again, I take umbrage with your tone about whether I am well-informed. That was not my point, and it is, by some people, possible to debate without insults.
