In one of the strangest NHL scheduling quirks I’ve ever seen, after tomorrow the Kings won’t play until Dec. 26, an eight-day break. Is that a positive or a negative for the Kings? Given the way they’ve been playing of late — 8-1-1 in their last 10 games — you might say they’re in danger [...]
Recognition for Quick
It’s always interesting, before road games, to listen to the questions asked by the home city’s reporters. In the first few weeks of the season, all of the questions were about Anze Kopitar. Now, increasingly, the questions are about Jonathan Quick, who was the NHL’s No. 1 star this week and is the current hot [...]
How are they doing it?
The Kings’ victory over Edmonton was one of those head-scratching games that can’t be explained by stats or logic. The Kings, decimated by injuries, came into Rexall Place less than 24 hours after a pretty bad loss to Vancouver and gritted out two points. Over the past month they’ve won tight games, got big goals [...]
Solid debut for Elkins
Corey Elkins’ NHL debut wasn’t one for the meek. He didn’t join his new teammates until the morning of the game, he didn’t get a morning skate, he got pushed into a bigger-than-expected role because of Jarret Stoll’s injury and he made his debut in front of a large, intense Edmonton crowd in a game [...]
Line on fire
The Kings put Brad Richardson, Michal Handzus and Dustin Brown together last night, and all they did was score two goals that gave the Kings a 2-0 lead. “I can’t touch it. It’s on fire,” Terry Murray said, with a laugh, about the line. Murray went on to have high praise for Richardson, who, over [...]
Injury updates
I’ll just let Terry Murray run through them here… (on Jack Johnson’s prognosis…) MURRAY: “After our break, we play a game on the 26th, Everything should be in pretty good shape by that time.” (on whether Jarret Stoll might be able to play tomorrow…) MURRAY: “I don’t know that right now. I’ll probably get a [...]
Johnson out, Martinez up
Terry Murray said today that Jack Johnson will miss tomorrow’s game and that Alec Martinez will be called up and likely will be in the lineup tomorrow. Murray said he hoped Jarret Stoll would be able to test his sore groin in tomorrow’s morning skate. Murray also said that Johnson should be able to return [...]
Morning reading/listening
Morning from Calgary, where it’s (slightly) warmer. The Kings will meet, but not skate, at the arena in a couple hours, so hopefully there will be injury updates to be had soon. For now, a couple things… Canada’s roster for the World Junior Championships has been set, and it will include Kings prospects Brayden Schenn, [...]
Tonight's game story (Dec. 15)
Here is tonight’s game story, with stats and video. Thanks for reading! Kings defeat Oilers 3-2
Quick postgame quotes
Jonathan Quick’s postgame thoughts… (on the game…)QUICK: “I felt like it was pretty similar to the last time we were up here. A good defensive battle, and each team had a few chances here and there. Our penalty kill and defensive play really stepped up, and we got a couple big goals. Sean O’Donnell ended [...]
Murray postgame quotes
Terry Murray’s postgame thoughts… (on winning with a shorthanded lineup…) MURRAY: “We have a lot of players out of the lineup right now, so it was really important to come and play the right way, with a good checking mentality and it was nice to score the first goal. That was important for us here [...]
Brown postgame quotes
Dustin Brown’s postgame thoughts… (on winning with a shorthanded roster…) BROWN: “Obviously we had some guys coming in, playing some big minutes, that maybe aren’t there normally. I thought Elkins played pretty physical, pretty solid, for his first game in the NHL. You’ve got everyone pitching in, and I thought our system play was really [...]
O'Donnell postgame quotes
Sean O’Donnell’s postgame thoughts… (on his goal…) O’DONNELL: “It’s the law of averages. If you get enough shots on net… Our guys did a great job. I don’t even think their goalie saw it at all. He just went down and tried to cover it, and it snuck in the corner. Willie and Fro and [...]
Johnson update
After the game, Terry Murray said Jack Johnson “took one off the ankle” on Sheldon Souray’s first-period shot (it had been unclear as to whether the shot hit Johnson’s ankle, or higher). Murray said Johnson underwent a fluoroscopic x-ray — yeah, I don’t know either — the results of which were unclear, and that Johnson [...]
FINAL: Kings 3, Oilers 2
The Kings held on, despite losing Jack Johnson to injury, and earned two points in Edmonton. Last time here, Matt Greene was the unlikely hero. Tonight, it was Sean O’Donnell. More from the locker room ASAP…
Kings 3, Oilers 2
The Kings did hard work down behind the Oilers’ net, and got rewarded. Alexander Frolov fed the puck up to the blue line, and Sean O’Donnell’s slap shot through traffic found the net with 4:33 remaining.
Johnson not on ice, bench
Jack Johnson had four shifts in the second period but is now out of the game and not on the Kings’ bench. I’ll post an update as soon as I hear something.
Kings 2, Oilers 2
The Oilers tied the game 3:43 into the third period. Tom Gilbert made a strong pass to start a break, and Sheldon Souray passed over to Ryan Potulny, whose one-time shot, all alone, from the middle of the right circle beat Quick.
End of second: Kings 2-1
Thanks in large part to several big saves by Jonathan Quick, the Kings will carry a lead into the third period. The Oilers hold a 19-18 edge in shots on goal.
Kings 2, Oilers 1
The Oilers had been buzzing in the Kings’ zone for a few minutes, and got rewarded when Ryan Potulny won a faceoff and got the puck back to Sheldon Souray, whose rocket slap shot through traffic beat Jonathan Quick.
