Terry Murray said that Justin Williams suffered a broken leg tonight. Murray said he couldn’t estimate when Williams might return and didn’t yet know if anyone would get called up from Manchester.
FINAL: Coyotes 3, Kings 2
The Kings went on the power play with 2:04 remaining, but couldn’t get the game-tying goal. More from the locker room ASAP, including, hopefully, an update on Justin Williams.
Coyotes 3, Kings 2
The Coyotes took the lead 9:20 into the third period, as Keith Yandle joined the play and got rewarded. Yandle took a pass from Peter Mueller, and Quick made the save, but Yandle got around Davis Drewiske, picked up his rebound and scored before Quick could recover.
Kings 2, Coyotes 2
The Kings tied the game on the power play, 3:58 into the third period. Anze Kopitar shot from just above the top of the left circle and Michal Handzus, parked in front of the net, got the tip-in.
End of second: Phoenix 2-1
The Kings hung tough in the second period, as each team failed on a power-play attempt, but the Kings face an uphill climb in the third period. Phoenix has a 16-1-1 record this season when leading after two periods, and Ilya Bryzgalov has yet to show many cracks.
End of first: Phoenix 2-1
The Coyotes outshot the Kings 14-6 in the first period (at one point, it was 13-2). After Justin Williams’ injury, Wayne Simmonds stepped into the first-line right winger role.
Coyotes 2, Kings 1
Well, there’s the strange goal of the year. Off a faceoff in the Kings’ zone, the puck popped in the air right in front of the Kings’ goal. Rob Scuderi attempted to handle it, but the puck tipped off the front of Scuderi’s glove and into the Kings’ net, with 6:04 left in the second [...]
Kings 1, Coyotes 1
The Coyotes tied the game 8:45 into the first period. The Kings killed a penalty, but the Coyotes kept the pressure on. Robert Lang skated the puck into the corner, then fed a pass to Adrian Aucoin in the high slot. Aucoin’s shot beat Jonathan Quick to tie the game.
Kings 1, Coyotes 0
Just over a minute after the apparently devastating injury to Justin Williams, the Kings took the lead. Dustin Brown chased a puck down in the corner and fed it out to Davis Drewiske. Ilya Bryzgalov made the save on Drewiske’s point shot, but Brown skated in front and knocked in the rebound at the 5:49 [...]
Williams injured
Justin Williams suffered some type of injury to his lower right leg after a play behind the Phoenix net less than five minutes into the first period. Williams was down on the ice for at least five minutes and had to be removed by a stretcher, his hands covering his face as he left the [...]
Game preview
Need to catch up on today’s news and notes? Here’s my LAKings.com notebook from today, followed by the game preview, as written by NHL.com. Dec. 26 notebook Dec. 26 game preview The Coyotes enter the game with a 14-5-0 home record, and two of those losses have come from the Kings. Phoenix, though, has won [...]
Super-sized line
The Kings are nearly back to full strength at forward, but two rookies — Corey Elkins and Brandon Segal — have impressed Terry Murray enough to earn fourth-line spots, at least for now, until Jarret Stoll returns from his groin injury. That gives the Kings a rather hefty fourth line, with Elkins (listed at 6-foot-3, [...]
Canada 16, Latvia 0
Canada has finished putting the boots to Latvia on the first day of the World Junior Championships. Canada won 16-0, and held Latvia to 10 shots on goal. Ouch. Kings prospect Brandon Kozun had two goals and three assists, and Brayden Schenn had two assists. The star for Canada was Gabriel Bourque, with three goals [...]
Down, then out
From second line to fourth line to third line to first line — or was it second, third, fourth, first? — Teddy Purcell has been all over the Kings’ map this season. Now, he’s at the only place he really doesn’t want to be: off the map completely, as a healthy scratch tonight against Phoenix. [...]
They're back
As you probably already know, the Kings will regain the services of Jack Johnson, Brandon Segal, Wayne Simmonds and Ryan Smyth tonight. Segal and Simmonds were activated from injured reserve today, and Jarret Stoll was placed on IR, retroactive to Dec. 15, meaning he will be able to come off IR when healthy. It’s always [...]
Frolov's reaction
Here was Alexander Frolov’s reaction, this morning, to not being selected to Russia’s Olympic team… Question: Did anyone with the Russian team get in touch with you? FROLOV: “I didn’t really hear anything.” Question: A lot of disappointment there? FROLOV: “Yeah, of course it’s disappointing, but it is what it is. There’s nothing I can [...]
Tonight's lineup
Teddy Purcell and Peter Harrold are scheduled to be the healthy scratches tonight, leaving the Kings with a lineup of forwards much the way they practiced this week… Smyth-Kopitar-Williams Richardson-Handzus-Brown Frolov-Moller-Simmonds Ivanans-Elkins-Segal Terry Murray said he didn’t feel as though any of his four returning players (Johnson, Segal, Simmonds, Smyth) would be limited. I talked, [...]
Off to Phoenix
The one-day trip to Phoenix begins… The team will arrive in Arizona early enough to have a morning skate, then get ready for a 7 p.m. (6 in California) start. I’ll be reporting from the skate, and hopefully will have some thoughts from Alexander Frolov about being left off Russia’s Olympic team roster.
Merry Christmas to all…
I hope everybody has a wonderful Christmas. If Christmas isn’t your thing, please have a safe and joyous holiday season and don’t forget to visit or call to some family and friends. When this started in October, I didn’t know what to expect. I’ll never forget writing the first blog post and thinking, “Here goes [...]
Too much hype?
I never really found the proper time, or context, to use these quotes, but a couple days ago, Terry Murray was asked an interesting question and gave an interesting answer. The question, basically, was, “Do the Kings run the risk of getting too full of themselves?” Over the past few weeks, they’ve had national (including [...]
