Erik Ersberg’s postgame thoughts… (on the Flames’ second goal…) ERSBERG: “I tried to box the first guy out. Apparently, they had a second guy coming, which I didn’t really see before. It’s unfortunate. Other than that, I thought I played a decent game.” (on not getting much offensive support…) ERSBERG: “It would have been a [...]
Murray postgame quotes
Terry Murray’s non-Phaneuf-related postgame thoughts… (on how to get the first line going again…) MURRAY: “Just keep playing them. We’re talking, we’re reviewing, we’re practicing, we’re giving them the opportunity. Five on five, power play, 4 on 4, penalty killing. It does go to the hands of the players sometimes, too. We’ve all been there, [...]
Kopitar postgame quotes
Anze Kopitar’s postgame thoughts… (on if he was shaken up by the Phaneuf hit…) KOPITAR: “A little bit. It was more of a wind-knocker. Other than that, I felt OK. I have no problems.” (on whether it was a dirty hit…) KOPITAR: “We’re going down for the puck. I’m reaching around, trying to get the [...]
Murray's reaction to hit
After the game, Terry Murray had a testy exchange with a Calgary television broadcaster about Dion Phaneuf’s hit on Anze Kopitar… Question: What was your concern in the first period, in terms of the hit on Anze? What was your concern about that hit? MURRAY: “Are you serious? What is my concern.” Question: Yeah. MURRAY: [...]
FINAL: Calgary 2, Kings 1
The Kings’ losing streak is now at a season-worst four games, and they have 11 goals in their last six games. The Kings outshot the Flames 24-21 but lost in Calgary for a ninth consecutive time. More from the locker room later…
End of second: Flames 2-1
The teams traded goals in the first three minutes, then went scoreless. The Flames are 16-0-1 this season when leading after two periods. A reminder to keep the comments civil, and focused on the game. Thank you.
Flames 2, Kings 1
The Kings, again, showed an inability to sustain momentum after a goal. At the 2:48 mark, Craig Conroy scored his first goal of the season. Ersberg attempted to play the puck behind his net, but got caught in traffic and left the net empty as Conroy got the puck in front and scored.
Kings 1, Flames 1
The Kings tied the game 15 seconds into the second period. Scott Parse took a pass from Oscar Moller and, from just below the left circle, whipped a shot, short side, that got between Kiprusoff’s right arm and body.
End of first: Flames 1-0
Well, a pretty boring period there… The teams ended up with a combined 59 penalty minutes in the period. Ivanans must still serve 51 seconds of his misconduct penalty, while Richardson and Glencross still have 1:41 each to go. Phaneuf, of course, is gone for the game. Shots were 11-7 Flames in the first period.
Flames 1, Kings 0
Quite a series of action… First, Dion Phaneuf ran Anze Kopitar into the boards, drawing a game-misconduct penalty. In the resulting scrum, the teams ended up 4-on-4, and the Flames scored at the 6:21 mark. Jay Bouwmeester carried the puck into the Kings’ zone, and Rene Bourque beat Drew Doughty to the front of the [...]
Four years, and counting
Looking for a positive sign for the Kings tonight? Canada’s Olympic team was announced today. Canada’s team for the 2006 Olympics was announced on Dec. 21, 2005. When was the Kings’ last victory in Calgary? Dec. 21, 2005. Since then. the Kings are 0-8 at the Saddledome. Here’s what Terry Murray said today about trying [...]
Ersberg tonight, Quick tomorrow
Erik Ersberg will get his fourth start of the season in goal tonight. Ersberg is 1-1-1 this season, with a 5-2 victory over Carolina, a 5-4 overtime victory over San Jose and a 4-2 loss to the New York Rangers. Ersberg started both of the Kings’ games in Calgary last season, and neither went well. [...]
Murray comments on Doughty
Here were Terry Murray’s thoughts today about the inclusion of Drew Doughty on Canada’s Olympic roster… MURRAY: “It’s a great opportunity for him. It’s wonderful for a guy, 20 years old, to be selected as one of the top defensemen in Canada and play in the Olympic program. It’s great, it’s exciting.” Question: Did you [...]
On the other hand…
Ryan Smyth earned the nickname “Captain Canada” for his frequent appearances for his country in international events. Smyth won gold for Canada at the World Junior Championships (1995), the World Cup of Hockey (2004), the World Championships (2003 and 2004) and the Olympics (2002), but he won’t get a chance to duplicate that final feat. [...]
Teammate, roommate, enemy
The first person to learn about Drew Doughty’s selection to Team Canada was his roommate, Dustin Brown. It just so happens that, barring a huge shock, Doughty and Brown will be Olympic opponents, since Brown is expected to be a major part of Team USA. Here’s what Brown said today about Doughty’s selection… —– Question: [...]
High praise from Babcock
Team Canada head coach Mike Babcock spoke this morning, on TSN, about Drew Doughty’s selection to the team. Also, I’ll attach the full roster for Canada, for those who haven’t yet seen it. Here’s what Babcock had to say about Doughty… BABCOCK: “The great players, they seem to just get better so fast. He’s a [...]

Drew Doughty faced the media this morning — four of us from L.A., about 25-30 from Canada — and talked about being the youngest player selected to represent Canada in the 2010 Olympics… Question: What was your reaction this morning? DOUGHTY: “You know, I was pretty surprised. I knew I had a shot at one [...]

Ersberg in tonight
I’ll have plenty more on Drew Doughty’s Olympic selection a bit later, but first a bit of news on tonight’s game… Erik Ersberg will start in goal tonight, with Jonathan Quick scheduled to get the start tomorrow night in Minnesota. Due to the time change and U.S. Customs, the Kings are looking at an early-morning [...]
Doughty on Team Canada
Drew Doughty was informed this morning that he has been selected to Canada’s Olympic team. Obviously, I’ll have Doughty’s reaction after the morning skate.
