Better than a knee injury, but still going to be out for quite awhile. The Kopitar/Williams/Smythe line is bringing back very bad memories of the injuries that ruined Palffy/Allison/Deadmarsh. Could the hockey gods really be that cruel?
[Reply]
Stick a fork in the Kings. Detroit is right on their arse now.
[Reply]
Well, that’s a tough break for Willy (no pun intended). Hope he gets well soon and returns for the playoff push
[Reply]
Well, at least there’s the olympic break coming up.
[Reply]
That was a tuff one to lose.I hope you recover soon Williams.
[Reply]
Parse or Clune, make your pick
[Reply]
Hopefully, he won’t be gone for too long. Get better Williams!!
[Reply]
Ya. The hockey gods can be that cruel. We’re talking about the kings here.
[Reply]
Hmm… Much better scenario than I feared. Maybe we could have him back for the playoffs? Anyone care to speculate on a timeframe for something like this?
[Reply]
Heal up J-Dub! We need you back for the playoffs!!
[Reply]
Whats with you in giving up in the kings already R.E.M? You already stated you want them to get the 1st overall pick. Like the kings need to be the laughing stock of the league again…….
[Reply]
6 weeks
[Reply]
Well, on the bright side, at least the Kings got the best of JW, O’Sullivan and Cole.
Now we just need him healthy next year for the beginning of out dynasty with Taylor Hall, Brayden Schenn, and Colton Teubert on board as well.
[Reply]
r.e.m. do us all a favor and go back in the hole you were living in when the kings were winning. god forbid we lost 2 gmaes in a row what are we going to do!!!!!!!!
[Reply]
mike
Again? One more time maybe?
But then we get Hall and the Kings will have the last laugh.
[Reply]
If it is a fibula at least a month? I don’t know.
[Reply]
he’s an athlete so 5 weeks just a guess
[Reply]
R.E.M.,Your gift for tactfulness is inspiring.
[Reply]
You must be in a dream state.
[Reply]
the kings arent going to get hall so just stop talking about it lol. simmonds will step up on the 1st line and parse will play on his line just like a few weeks back they will be fine. they went into the hottest team in hockeys arena andcame a crazy bounce away from getting points without williams.
[Reply]
REM, the chances of the Kings picking 1st this year are about as likely as pigs flying.
[Reply]
R.E.M. – Seems like someone didn’t get what they wanted for Christmas…..
[Reply]
Agree Goldie….if it’s the fibula he should be back this season…tibia and I am guessing he could be out for much longer…in looking at the replay I would say tibia but I am going to try and be hopeful.
[Reply]
I think Clune gets called up
[Reply]
6 weeks to heal up 2 to get back in the line up.
Just minimum Im guessing.
[Reply]
Steve McQueen
You’re right, I certainly wouldn’t bet on it…
unless you gave me about 1000/1 maybe.
But if the Kings happened to get him they would become a dynasty for sure!
[Reply]
You guys have a good night.
I ask one thing…dream big!
And go SJ (tonight that is).
[Reply]
Doesn’t Clune play left wing? Who do you move over to right wing if he is the call-up?
[Reply]
I would call Parse but murray will call up Clune.
.
[Reply]
He keeps messing with Kings fan cause Oilers has absolutely no chance to make a play-off. And he doesn’t even care about player got serious injury. He’s making fun with it. I just can’t believe this kind of sad person actually exists.
[Reply]
I thought Parse played left as well but maybe he does not care which wing?
[Reply]
Hey REM,
RIP!!
[Reply]
Parse plays left wing too..? Maybe they just insert Teddy Purcell back into the lineup?
[Reply]
Right! Who cares which wing he’s on, just bring him up.
[Reply]
OH and the Monarchs win again
[Reply]
Parse that is. Not Purcell.
[Reply]
deadmarsh,
it’s gonna be clune, not parse
[Reply]
We just might be seeing Teddy again.
[Reply]
Bad loss losing Williams like this. We get some important ones back and then lose another important one.
I’m not real worried abt this game tonite. First game back after a long lay-off. I think things will improve fast.
[Reply]
this is a fibula break since fox said he was on crutches afer the game. therfore he should be back before the seasom is over.
[Reply]
Can you try and find out what kind of break it is?
[Reply]
Looking at replay, JW fell and his right leg cought under the left leg. At the same time he twisted right leg a little bit. That must be a fibula. If it’s a tibia he couldn’t even lift up his leg I think but I really don’t know.
[Reply]
game not so important. have enjoyed watching williams become an
important player on this team. thought he elevated his game when the injuries hit and it made a difference. get back soon.
[Reply]
I love the Kings and I hate to say it but we are in big trouble now; same story different year.
The reason for this is because we again need to make the kind of move that our team has not had the balls to make since the Kings got both Allison and Deadmarsh (i.e. the last time we were ever a serious threat to win a Cup).
Again, this time we need to get two, not the just the one big move for a scorer that people on the blog have been discussing this past week.
I’ll keep hope though because that’s ultimatley what it is all about.
[Reply]
I’ll bet he has a spiral fracture of the tibia/fibula. I had the same injury and was down 6+ months……of course I did smoke. Oh Well.
[Reply]
yeah williams injury is gonna be the turning point. mark this day on your calendar

R.E.M. Murray says:

Stick a fork in the Kings. Detroit is right on their arse now.
Huh? Detroit dropped 3 games prior to tonights win against..Columbus. That’s not saying a whole lot, either. They’re also minus 8 starters. We’re down, what, 1 now?
Lets not panic yet, folks.
[Reply]
Anybody else think that the Kings looked completely distracted the whole game? The team is going to have to fight the “just our luck” attitude now, because losing a guy like that (right after finally getting a couple other guys back) can be really discouraging.
I think Mark is right. This team is in trouble, and I hope DL can come up with a good move (and not just to obtain draft picks and prospects, obviously). DL is going to have to give up some assets to improve the NHL club.
[Reply]
I hope announcing the break satisfies the upper/lower body thing for some of you guys.It looked like he was reaching down low when it 1rst happened.Lower than the knee anyway.
[Reply]
its been over a hour since weve heard from Rich…….
[Reply]
The Kings will be fine. The Williams loss hurts but he isn’t the whole team. Finally, the team has a great minor league system that they can recall from. This team isn’t going anywhere but up. Their future is bright, they will make the playoffs barring a catastrophic collapse which isn’t going to happen.
Our best to JW for a very speedy recovery. If he isn’t back in time for the playoffs, get well over the summer. We’ll be back next season. Just get well JW…..we’re all praying for ya.
[Reply]
The great minor league system is hurting from injuries too…
[Reply]
Sucks to see Willy out. I do like Simmonds with Smyth and Kopi, so thats good in a way. I hope Willy is not in too much pain and gets better soon. On the bright side we (or at least I) get to see Simmer on the 1st line. I really like him. Get well soon Willy
[Reply]
Imagine is only we had picked up Phil Kessel….
i hate missing out on game changing type players like this. thats the 1 thing our team is lacking.
[Reply]
I would call up some youngsters.
Let’s see, we could call up Patrick O’Sullivan to take Wiiliams place.
Andy Murray to take Terry Murray’s place.
And any other GM in the NHL to take Dean Lombardi’s place.
[Reply]
Matt, it was talked about that LA was on phil and boston was considering taking LA’s offer. (no official off was listed) but instead couldn’t say no to Toronto’s 1st round pick and more for the next 20 years.
[Reply]
Like i said in the last post…something anthony this way comes…
[Reply]
If we got Kessel at the starting of the season he’d have an upperbody injury already.
[Reply]
Folks,
Depends on the mechanism of injury, but this sounds like a torque fracture, which would likely be a spiral fracture of the tibia. The docs on site didn’t move him until he could be splinted, so looks like they knew by the location and the angulation right away.
This depends on a lot of factors: 1): comminution or not; 2): compound or not; 3): level on the tibia. Comminution = multiple fracture fragments. Compound = bone through the skin.
I’ve seen two hockey players fracture bones in their legs for the Bakersfield Condors. Both were horrific injuries, full speed into the end boards, jam the skate into the crack and shatter the bone, in one case the femur, the other the tibia and fibula. In each case, the player’s career was finished. In each case, the fractures were comminuted; in the case of the tibial fracture (fibula was fractured, too), the fracture was compound as well. Both players struggle to walk without a limp, years later.
The idea of a return to hockey in 6-8 weeks is a pipe dream. Remember, these are hockey players. They make their living on their feet, utilizing tremendous leg strength pumping each leg to achieve high speeds, utilizing their skates and a tremendous sense of balance to turn on a dime. Personally, I can’t imagine Williams back this season. This is a 3-4 month injury in the best of cases, for an average adult human being to fully heal.
I imagine the tibia will be pinned, screws placed with a titanium plate over a fibular fracture (if indicated). Those who say it is better to be a fracture are right as long as a joint is not directly affected by ligamentous injury. But don’t forget, full healing is needed before athletic rehabilitation can begin. You all saw what happened with Simmonds tonight, after a scope repair of his knee. He has little leg strength, yet. Imagine what Williams will have to do to recover his hockey legs.
Some of you may remember Joe Theismann’s career-ending lower leg fracture, of the tibia and fibula. That was a dirty compound fracture, the open ends of the wound smashed into the soil. This won’t be nearly as bad as that.
Best case guess: 3-4 months to full healing (if no other issues), two months to rehab/ that means June.
Call this a season-ending injury, without heroic recovery; pray that this is not much, much worse.
[Reply]
Bako I hope it’s not that serious. If it is than I hope Williams gets through it with as little pain as possible.Good luck either way Willy.
[Reply]
Except we don’t really know what the injury is. It could be career-ending, or it could be two months. Or somewhere in between.
In any case, if the Kings can win without Smyth, Stoll, Simmonds and Segal, oh and Scuderi and Johnson, they can win without Williams.
It would be nice if the Kings could finish on a three-man advantage, or if JJ could hit the net. But I’m nit-picking.
Bottom-line: whenever he’s back, it’s good for us. Until then, it’s an opportunity for Purcell, Parse, Moller, not to mention everyone else, to step up.
Gretzky was injured most of 92-93. I forget how that turned out.
[Reply]
Bako — the condor players breaks were were from compression. JW’s appeared to be from side contact. Do you think the break may be cleaner, like from a slash on the forearm?
[Reply]
Summer of 93 Patric Roy bought Marty McSorely a new car.
[Reply]
dom — but he threw him a curve on the stick err price
[Reply]
jet that joke was almost as bad as mine.
[Reply]
It is interesting to hear the Phil Kessel talk because I was thinking of him too this summer but he also had an injury and has not been back for the full season. Now that he is back he is doing as expected although it does not seem to be doing the Leafs much good.
Here is a point of hope; at least we are not the Leafs! However, this time from now to the Olympics is make or break for the Kings(no pun intended; I feel guilty for even saying no pun intended because I love Willy). Events tonight changed the whole outlook.
[Reply]
Jet and Dom
Kid not about ‘93 during Christmas time. That was the work of the Devil!!
[Reply]
Was the Kessel post serious? 21 pts for 2 first and a second and he cannot defend.
[Reply]
okay, i retract my short sighted effort at comedy.
[Reply]
Sorry Marty.
[Reply]
Jet
Good point about Phil; one never knows where or how one will fit with a given team. I just mention him because his name has come up on the blog. Gabby leads the league right now with 26 goals. PK has 13 in 9 less games.
Assets are assets. If you win the lottery it does you no good if at some point you do not go down to the bank and stick your card into the ATM machine! And as we have all seen in this economy, what seems to be a great investment for the future may turn out to be a bust which leaves one old without a penny.
Go Kings
[Reply]
i think he broke his fibula, i broke my leg the same way as he did.
[Reply]
Baco,
I didn’t want to be the one to comment on the possibility of this being a serious injury….career ending. I’m not saying it is and I’m not saying I know the extent of his injury, but in that location it’s certainly possible. I guess what I’m saying is, I’M not really concerned about how long he’ll be out, as much as I’m concerned he regains his full health. Best wishes to you JW.
[Reply]
When Smyth went down, people said the Kings were done… It took a few games, but the team responded and the team climbed into 1st place in the standings. Maybe J Will’s injury will bring the team together and make them stonger yet. Lets not give up on them now!
[Reply]
heal well sir williams, heal well..!
[Reply]
Elkins sucks.
[Reply]
I hate this for Justin. He was having such a great year!! Get better Justin!! We miss you in Carolina. Come back! We need you in front of the net!
[Reply]
Terrible to lose Williams who was playing so well…hopefully he’ll be back, if not for the playoffs then next year. This team has depth and, although this will hurt them, I wouldn’t write them off. As others have pointed out, the kings were able to suck it up in the absence of Smyth.
Frolov is getting his mojo back–he was a force of nature last night. One bad bounce (the puck bounced sideways into the net) and a rookie mistake (coughing the puck up along the boards for an outnumbered attack)–take those away and the kings win. I don’t see this as in previous seasons where the loss of one or two guys means disaster….
[Reply]
JW
Get well quick.
[Reply]
I think the biggest loss (and what will provide the biggest mental challenge to overcome) is not the break as much as this dominant line not getting back together.
I really don’t remember ever a line as dominant as these three were at the beginning of the season.
No disrespect to the injury but the emotional pull from having that line taken away is what hurt the team last night … and it’s our biggest challenge going forward.
I’m all about Simmy .. hell I bought the kid’s jersey, but that Williams/Smyth/Kopi chemsity was awesome.
Very interesting to see what type of momentum we can create after this.
[Reply]
I had a broken leg when I played junior…good news, 5-8 weeks…bad news, it totally changes your stride
[Reply]
Two words…WAYNE SIMMONDS
[Reply]
Well, looks like the kid behind me at the game was right. He immediately said it was broken. That’s prob the season for him. Damn!
[Reply]
Oh, the hyperbole! How will the Kings ever manage without Williams!
[Reply]
Everyone is wishing Williams to get well, how about wishing Kopitar to get well?
[Reply]
