Here was Alexander Frolov’s reaction, this morning, to not being selected to Russia’s Olympic team…
Question: Did anyone with the Russian team get in touch with you?
FROLOV: “I didn’t really hear anything.”
Question: A lot of disappointment there?
FROLOV: “Yeah, of course it’s disappointing, but it is what it is. There’s nothing I can do about it right now.”
Question: Were you in communication with them at all, or were you just waiting for the list to come out?
FROLOV: “I was waiting for the list to come out. I talked to them maybe a couple months ago, and nothing really after.”
Question: They can still make changes to the roster. Can you use that as motivation at all?
FROLOV: “Any player wants to play in the Olympics. I’ve got to do my best and we’ll see what happens.”
I like Frolov, but sometimes his laid back attitude comes off as being lazy. It’s irritating!

We stills love you as a King. Just play for the Kings the best you can l!

Eegatz I’m going to start calling him Frobot! Emotionless!
[Reply]
I have a feeling if he showed some emotion people here maybe saying he he shows it for the olympics but not the kings. .
Just like he said can’t do anything about it and play his best.

Well, a hat trick against Bryz should just about put your name back in consideration.

Stuart: I like that Frobot. Thats funny!
[Reply]
I can play hockey with no handle bars, no handle bars…

Frobot = Comedy gold!
Nice!

Fro barely speaks english. What he does speak is terrible at best.Interpreting what his emotions are is unfair.I’m sure the guy cares.Fro has always been the same and I understand the frustration, but he’s not going to suddenly start breaking down in tears or cursing the media. It’s just not him.

Ed = +1

What is he supposed to do, rip a strip off of the Russian GM? Look injuries happen and there is still a chance but not if he flies off the handle. I will bet you dollars to donuts that if Doughty does not make Team Canada he will use the word disappointing as well. Conversely if he did fly off the handle there will be people on here calling him a cry baby…talk about a lose lose situation.

It has always seemed to me that people think of Frolov with the same mindset that they do with Kovalev. In Kovalev’s case, justified. In Frolov’s place, not. The guy is even-tempered and private, but he has changed his game to suit the team’s needs for years now. Scorer, defensive forward, either and often both. Just look at the way Simmonds has learned his corner work, who has he learned it from? Change jerseys and ignore skin color and they play the same way in the corners. Fro has had a major impact on Simmonds, and for me his value is there every night. He is low-profile off the ice, yet this bad rap sticks to him so much that he is seen as a player that doesn’t care. I really don’t get it…

Fair enough Dominick, but how about the international language of Hockey? How about showing some emotion on the ice when some dman xchecks you in the small of the back after you’d already been standing off to the side of the net (mostly because you have no intention of going to the front)? Or when that same dman face rubs the five-o-clock shadow of your mug? All I’ve seen as far as emotion goes is a meek smile as Frobot skated away from the abuse. I’m not sayin drop the gloves, but use your stick and apply a little chop to the leg or a xcheck of his own.
His English is good enough, too. I could hear emotion when it’s present even in the worst English. He just doesn’t have the emotional commitment to the game that most of us as fans have.

Gonna refrain from taking any shots. I wish him well.

stuart, you CAN’T always teach edge. Some guys have it and some guys don’t.Devalueing(if that’s even a word)a player who doesn’t have that in his game is wrong. Not all guys are going to play like Chelios.Fro’s been that way from day 1.Expecting that because his offensive numbers don’t make you happy is just going to frustrate you.
[Reply]
It has nothing to do with his offensive numbers isnt the issue for me anymore. I appreciate his defensive skillset. I’ve moved on from expecting him to be the Kings leading scorer or even top 3.
I will always want Kings player to show some emotion. I feel as if I’ve made my point. No need to beat a dead dog.
GO KINGS!!! Pick up some points and get back in that top eschelon!

Hes a pro for christs sake….maybe he should be more like iverson? give me a break.
[Reply]
If he gets any more laid back with that attitude and they’d be calling him Pa Frolov (after Pa Kettle).
[Reply]
Look at it this way, we won’t have to worry about him getting hurt again during the Olympics.
[Reply]
No offense to him but nothing in his game made me think he deserved to be in the Olympics. Sure he has played well defensively as they have asked of him, but they are asking every player to be sound defensively, that is how the Kings play now and it is great. But he has the talent level to do better on the offensive side and I can see why some might question his desire. I won’t do that here, but it is understandable to a point. Not based on this interview though. Just based on every thing about him during his career with the Kings.
Who knows maybe he is playing up to his abilities, but most seem to think he is capable of much more and i am one of them. It isn’t the coaches fault or the way they are asking him to play that is causing him to not seem to hustle every shift or perform better on the offensive side of things.
I honestly think he may just need a change of scenery. Happens to a lot of professional athletes.
[Reply]
No, Frolov hasn’t really played well enough to earn him a spot on their Olympic roster. However, I’m coming to the conclusion that this is just the way Frolov talks/acts, and that he’s not passionless or ambivalent, just a little reserved and unfamiliar with the language.
I hope.
