Given the break in the schedule, plus the fact that we’re nearly halfway through the season, it seems like a good time for another Open Forum session.
For our new friends who don’t already know the drill, feel free to ask any Kings-related question that you might have, and I’ll do my best to answer all of them (if your fellow readers don’t beat me to it!)
The last session, a few weeks ago, produced some great questions. I’ll start answering these questions tomorrow, so post away!
alt="LA Kings Insider with Rich Hammond" />
If the Kings made it into the playoffs, which team do you think the Kings would fare best against and worst against? Pretty much every team has a chance at any position as of now in the playoffs, so this question is very open. In my opinion, I think the Kings would play well against Calgary or Phoenix but not well against Vancouver and Nashville…
[Reply]
Do you know if TM is still unhappy with Drewiski’s play? I heard from a source, not sure if hes reliable though, that TM wants Drewiski to drop the gloves once in a while, although he hasn’t transmitted that message to Drewiski. Did you hear about this?
[Reply]
Rich,
I saw how Minnesota lost most of their equipment to a fire and it got me thinking. How do the Kings travel with their equipment when they’re on the road? More specifically how does the team get the bags from the airport to the next arena. Do they rent trailers or buses for that?
Thanks Rich for taking our questions.
[Reply]
Rich, why did you leave the Hockey NEws?
If Quick keeps up his play and also keeps playing this much over this year and next, does Bernier become trade bait for next year? Or do you keep him in the minors playing slot of minutes.
[Reply]
Mr Hammond,
Is there any way we can get some video of the boys practicing, on a regular basis? Maybe even a helmet cam for quick, mic up a different guy each time. I think practice is when the boys are smiling and communicating a little more. It would make ‘em more human to be in that close to their routine and would connect to their fans on a personal level. Also when when our hurt guys are skatin with the red shirt, we can get a feel of how close they are to ready without probing his condition every day. You guys can post the videos online, it doesnt have to be televised. I have more ideas for this, but is this even feasable?
[Reply]
Hey Rich, I got a question more on the technical side of a telecast…
Is the delay on the audio the same length as it is on the video? It’s just that sometimes the play by play seems seamless to what’s happening on the ice.
[Reply]
What ever happened to the Kings pre-game show? Break the ice (Kings Live) was a pretty good pre-game show. They should bring it back with you and Heidi hosting.

[Reply]
Rich,
Are you noticing a different atmosphere “in the room” now that the Kings are winning on a consistent basis? Is there a feeling of “let’s enjoy this while we can” or do you sense confidence in the team that shows they expect to win? I hope that your reply will include something about the playoffs being an expectation for the team…a “when we make the playoffs” rather than an “if” conversation. Does that make sense? Thanks for all your hard work!
[Reply]
Rich,
I’d like to make a formal request for an interview of Helene Elliot…
As pointed out yesterday, there are many people who do not believe the L.A. Times has a hockey beat reporter (eg.: reporter for the Kings/Ducks). I would love to have one of your interviews, or an open forum with her answering questions.
As many people have pointed out before me, Helene has had a very negative take on the Kings the last few years. The number one question for her would be if her opinion of the Kings/Kings Organization has improved the last two months. If not, why not? If so, could she help us true hockey fans be joined by the wanabee fans, by writing something positive about the Kings and their chances to make the 2009-2010 playoffs.
Many fans have the superstition that their presence at a game jinxes the team. For you, Rich: Have you any hockey superstitions, or are you purely scientific in your reasoning and above such nonsense. For example, I like to wear the same jersey to a game over and over again if there is a winning streak. Stupid, I know, but fans are often superstitious.
[Reply]
Parse, Elkins, Moller and Purcell-what do you see them becoming as far as maximizing their potential (ie first line winger, second line center)? They all seem to have qualities and flaws. Who seems to fit in the most right now on this team if all the pieces return to full health?
[Reply]
when the rules changed on how much curve the players could have on their sticks, how many of the Kings changed their sticks?
[Reply]
Rich, Thanks for doing this, especially since you also deserve a rest period. What are your top 5 surprises with the Kings this year, and conversely, what are your 5 biggest disappointments?
[Reply]
I will second Bako’s request for an interview with Helene. It might be just the thing to help us better understand why she can be so negative at times. I’d request it Podcast style and make it like yours, good and in-depth.
I would also like to request a Mid-Season report of every prospect in the Kings system that is NOT in the AHL. (Please include guys like Dwight King, callups from the ECHL) from Mark Yanetti & Michael Futa. We all pretty much know how goys on the Monarchs are doing, but we don’t often hear of the progress of the guys in Ontario, Juniors, Europe, etc. I saw Michael Pelech Wed. & Sat when Ontario played (And Beat) Bakersfield & Las Vegas. Quite frankly, he looked tenative, uninspired and slow. I was bummed since he’s the only Kings prospect with the team right now. It would also be nice to ask why we still have prospects like:
Jan Marek (29)
Igor Melyakov (32)
Andrei Shefer (28)
Mikhail Lyubushin (26)
Who seem way past their prime or are just never heard from EVER. Why are we taking up prospect space with these guys? Seems like it could be better spent with more youth. Maybe Mark and Michael could explain the reasons and tell us something we might not know.
Thanks & Merry Christmas to You and Yours Rich!

Whoops…Wed & Fri for the Ontario games.

Rich, When was the last time this far into the season that the Kings were in first place or close to it? Thanks for all of your hard work for us Kings fans. Brian M
[Reply]
Rich, can you inquire from the trainers what kind of workouts the athletes do? One time, I sneaked down to the locker rooms and I saw a bunch of players go into the weight room? What’s the deal? I want to follow their routine!!
[Reply]
Hiya Rich,
Thanks so much for this forum. I also would love an interview with Helene Elliot; I have always respected her writing and opinion, ever since way back before the whole Bruce McNall house of cards came down and she was the first (and only, at the time) writer hinting that something stunk in McNallville.
Also, I read a while back that some teams keep +/- for scoring chances, and that seems a much more telling stat than one for goals. Do you know if the Kings do such, and is there any way you could get a hold of them and post them on this forum?
We have debated at times here the whole ‘3-pt’ games situation and how to fix it (if indeed you think it needs fixing.) I’m all for making a regulation win worth 3 points; what’s your take?
[Reply]
I know it is kind of a goofy question, but I tend to notice unusual things during games (makes of equipment, tape around skates, sticks, etc.). When Andy Murray was here, if I remember correctly, all of the players wore their helmets during pregame warm-ups. I think that is still true today. Was there a team policy during AM’s time here and is there a current policy regarding helmets during warm-ups?
[Reply]
Have you had any luck reaching out to Tomas Sandstrom for a “where are they now?” segment on him?
[Reply]
Bako and Cynic, I know where you’re coming from regarding Helene Elliott. But honestly, how much more of an Eeyore is she than some of the people who post here? :-)
That being said, I think that even though she still spots the negative angle like a hawk, she has lightened up on the Kings as their success this season has seemed more substantial. She’s also kicked the Ducks when they’ve been down, just as hard as she’s kicked the Kings. It’s just that the Kings have been farther down, and for longer.
The Times seems to have three writers now covering hockey part-time: Mark Medina fills in with the Kings, and Robyn Norwood is back covering the Ducks, with Elliott doing both. And I think Helene was with the Kings on the Canada trip.
[Reply]
Rich,
I know this question has been asked before, but since some time has passed I figure the answer could have changed as well. Do you know if anyone in the Kings organization (players, coaches, front office, staff, etc) is a regular reader of your blog? Players especially? And if so, do you ever feel badly when criticizing a King’s play?
[Reply]
Rich I’ve asked this question a few times in other forums and so have other posters. So I guess this would be the right time to ask and I hope you answer it…..Will the Kings ever give out game used sticks at the end of the game instead of the generic ones, and did they switch to generic ones because of the Anaheim incident?
[Reply]
My question has to do with the periodic “intent to blow” controversies we seem to go through every month or so. I blathered ad nauseum on this topic here — http://wp.me/ptucv-DE — but the bottom line, as short as I can make it, is this:
It is commonly believed by fans, league officals and media people, that, if a ref waives off a goal because he either blew the whistle before the puck crossed the line or because the ref believes he intended to blow the whistle to stop play before the puck crossed the line, this call by the ref is not reviewable by video review. This happened to the Red Wings and the Kings within a week or so of each other last month.
The assumption (which appears to be widespread) is that the ref’s waiving off of such a goal is not only not reviewable but irreversible. Like somehow the ref’s initial decision must stand.
But the rule book not only says the ref can change his mind, but that he can ask for a review and for the help of the other officials including the war room, but it also says that the video officials must contact the officials regarding any potential goals that might have occurred during the previous play.
The rule book appears to me to be fairly unambiguous on this point. It says the ref can change his mind, after making use of all resources at his disposal.
Yet everyone, refs included, act as though this isn’t the case.
My question: how do you interpret the rule book on this, and am I correct that the league, media and players seem not to understand what’s actually in the rule book?
I would kind of like to know what TM, DL and other relevant parties think the rule says. Because, as I said in the link above, I don’t think the rule book says what everyone says it says.

Hey Rich,
So how much more rope does Purcell have with the coaching staff?

Rich, the Kings are clearly in a position to make a an appearance in the playoffs this season.
What, outside of the current injury issues, do you see as the key to them making a deep run in the playoffs? IS there any big “need” (or weakness) in your mind?
Oh yeah, right now, being specific with the fare, Carl’s Jr. Big Carl or In N Out Double Double NOT animal style?

Rich, you are the man. Has DL ordered the minor league affiliates to play the same on-ice system as the Kings so the prospects don’t have to learn a new system upon entering the NHL? And we need more verbal opinions on the evaluation of Kings’ prospects. We get nothing more than raw numbers when trying to learn about the prospects. Any plans on improving the available information to we faithful? Thanks again, Rich.

Just curious how do J.Johnson and D.Doughty get along inside the locker room and out. Both young players with so much talent. It seems as though most of the attention goes to Doughty with the press anyway. Love Johnsons’ grit Doughtys’ composer. Both have a wicked shot.

1) When I first heard that the Kings were interested in hiring someone to increase the profile of their coverage in the media, I thought it was a great idea because, aside from the Daily News, other news media outlets (including the LA Times and other online sites) would often rely heavily on AP news stories for their Kings’ coverage. This was disappointing because often the AP stories were only a couple of sentences long. I figured if the Kings had a writer who could write better and longer news articles that other media outlets could use as source material for their stories, then maybe the Kings would get a little more media attention and respect. My question: have any of the articles that you’ve written for the LAKingsInsider been picked up and reprinted by any other news outlets in print or online? If not, is it possible that your employment with the Kings is interpreted as a sign that your coverage might not be unbiased (even though we the readers of this site know better)? Or was that never a goal of the Kings when the idea was proposed? I’d be interested in getting your thoughts on whether you believe this blog is working out the way the Kings were hoping.
2) You share a name with a British TV presenter (from the greatest car show ever) whose nickname is Hamster. Can we start calling you Hamster?
[Reply]
The call ups from Manchester have filled in rather seamlessly, how are the programs and coaching styles coordinated so that the players fit in so easily. Does someone oversee this coordination, and if so who, and how is it done? Thanks Rich.
[Reply]
Why doesn’t the NHL / Kings do more promotion for the community service that is done? Commercials during prime time showing the players performing community service would peak viewer’s interest in a player and then, ultimately the sport, as well as give promotion for the cause. This would seem to be what NBC should be interested in with the NHL and the Olympics on their network in a few months.
[Reply]
On the plane to games..do the same players sit with each other…do the coaches ever sit with players? …discuss hockey, discuss their play with them?
[Reply]
Three questions…First, do you think that TM is relying too heavily on Jonathan Quick? He’s on pace to play like 75 games and I can’t believe he would be fresh for the playoffs. Plus, it’s very likely that Quick will represent Team USA in the Winter Olympics in February.
Secondly, did you ever get a reasonable answer as to why the away Canada games are not televised in L.A.? I’m sure the stock answer is that it’s too expensive to televise these games, but who is making that determination? Is it FSN or AEG?
Lastly, other than advertising, who pays FSN to televise the games in L.A.?
[Reply]
along with bb7’s question, here is my idea regarding the 3-pt matter:
regulation/overtime/shootout win: 2 pts
overtime loss: 0 pts
shootout loss: 1 pt
It makes sense to get nothing after an OT loss because you did lose the game. With the shootout, you havent lost the game just the skills competition used to determine who gets the 2nd point. what do you think of this rich? thanks
[Reply]
what is your take on how the players feel about their coach…Thanks
[Reply]
Not televised in LA because you don’t have satellite.
[Reply]
1) Have you noticed a change/reaction in Ersberg from this season as compared to last year, due to the lack of playing time and the rise of Quick?
2) Journalistic question. Now that you travel with the team and get post game quotes every game, how difficult does it become to come up with different questions? as well as not come across as ‘annoying pest to deal with’?
I can only imagine as the kings are winning right now they’re more willing to talk and answer questions, but imagine how awkward it can be when a team goes on a losing streak and just don’t feel in the mood to deal w/ media.
[Reply]
1. I saw a story that Voinov was generally unhappy about not getting a shot at the NHL yet. Are Kings officials concerned about him possibly playing in Russia?
2. If the Kings make the playoffs, do you believe Ersberg will still be the #2 goaltender on the roster?
3. Do you have any plans for a state of the union interview from Lombardi in the near future?
4. Are the Kings sending you to cover the Olympics?
Thanks Rich!
[Reply]
Rich,
I’m sure everyone will get all worked up over this, but last year Gauthier seemed to provide something that is missing this year. When he was on the ice, the opposition always had to be aware because he had no problem laying a hard, sometimes questionable, hit. There does not seem to be anyone who fills that role this year. Do you think the Kings need someone to step up in this area?
[Reply]
A few forum questions:
- How much room do the Kings have under the salary cap ? Other than Frolov, are there any major contracts expiring at the end of the season ?
- Who drives the scheduling of afternoon games … the Kings or Staples Center ? I much prefer Saturday night games.
- Ideally, our #2 goalie would play a dozen games and give Quick more mental/physical rest … even more ideally, that goalie would be a vet who could help mentor Quick. We are FAR from either with Esberg, do you see any potential change re our #2 ? Seems to me Esberg is only here due to a bad contract decision.

Rich,
I’ve never seen a player rare back and shoot a slapshot during a shoot-out. Is it an unspoken rule not to or what?
[Reply]
So, Rich, you cover the Kings. But the Kings are more than the on-ice product, DL, and TM. So the question is, how much does the “Organization” fall within your purview? For example, who gets to pick the underwhelming motifs, such as “See What Develops” and “Power, Pride, and Prejudice”. And can we trade that person for a 2nd rounder? Who designed and picked that terrible 3rd jersey, and can we get a 6th rounder for them? We may have to eat some salary, but that’s ok. But seriously, how about that “organization” coverage?
[Reply]
Maybe? With the type of game the Kings are playing trade Kopitar for a couple of rugged 15 goal scorers aks Detroit style? Goal tending fine finally.
[Reply]
Rich, can you update us where the Kings are with Jordan Nolan? I expected him to play in Manchester or ontario

Kings cap hit with the current roster is between $50-51MM, which leaves cap space of about $6MM. However, when Parse, Moller and Simmonds return (or whichever combination of entry level Kings), the cap hit will go up to $52MM+.
UFAs on 7/1: Frolov, Ivanans, Parse, SOD, Jones.
RFAs on 7/1: Purcell, Richardson, Elkins, Lewis, Clune.
Jordan Nolan: playing his last year of junior, with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. He’s got 21 pts in 20 games. He had 43 points all of last year; this year, he’s on pace for 68-ish.

Colten Teubert is going to be one of the assistant captains for team Canada btw.. OK, so, here’s my questions..
1) How disappointed is Kings management in Teddy Purcell? I mean, other than what we’ve heard (Quotes, statement, etc.) what’s the feeling around the locker room on his case? (i.e. is he a popular guy in the room, lots of friends)? Cuz the guy is really on the verge of losing his spot and he can easily be replaced by one of those Manchester kid that have been playing their tails off (Elkins, Parse, Moller)..
2) Bernier, Bernier, Bernier. Do you really think he’s going to spend the whole year in Manchester or will he get called up?
3) Why did Martinez get called up and not Voynov? Same question for Clune, the guy made the team and he’s been putting up OK numbers in Manchester, but he never gets the call up? He’s the pest type player we’re missing
4) Are Drew Doughty and Jack Johnson good friends? I feel like JJ might be a little bit jealous of DD, bcuz he’s younger and getting all the praise while Jack Johnson probably feels like no one ever talks positive things about him.
5) Please tell me you’re hearing trade rumors, DL needs to be working that phone.
Thanks again Rich, you’re the man!

you spoil us…you really do…thanks again for doing this during a time which is usually considered to be “off” time and reserved for other personal activities…
just a few questions for you this time around…:
1. olympic future – many players have already spoken out about their allegiance and commitment to play in the olympic games in spite of the possibility that gary bettman/nhl might not want to continue to allow league participation and discontinue the winter break allotted for it…alex ovechkin has been the most outspoken among today’s current superstars…
what are some of the current kings olympic hopefuls feelings regarding this…?
will this become a major problem between the players association/nhl/ioc…?
2. with the risk of getting a bit ahead of myself, the kings are currently on pace to realistically secure a playoff spot…with quick playing so many minutes during the first half, is it more realistic for us to expect ersberg to get more games or is it truer that d.l. will try to get an experience backup as we draw closer to the probability of a post-season…?…or…perhaps…both…?
3. are the ducks and kings still wagering charitable donations to the winning team of the season series…?…and if you know, who’s giving what to who…(?)
4. has the nfl and nhl partnered up/shared info to address the concussion concerns of each sport…?
both sports, of course, wear helmets, and even though the methodology of contact is different, the end results of such a collision are rendered virtually identical…is there anything being proposed…either equipment-wise or rule-wise (recent winter gm meetings) that you think we might see sooner than later…?
yr at top of the food chain, rich…
thanks again for putting all yr efforts, passion and professionalism in involving all of us here into, what now has to be considered, one of the better (best…but i’m biased) blogs…not only in hockey…but in all of sports…

Damm, these are great questions. I feel like a fourth liner w/ my ?s.
Let me ask if you can find out if the Kings have the ability to block a ref from reffing their games, if they feel he has a personal bias. I am pretty sure one of the refs at the Flame game also did the Flame game in LA. I won’t get started down that path again.
I posted yesterday that Jordon Nolan had 7 goals in his past 7 games for soo. It would be a tremendous help if he could score 10 goals a year and still take care of business. Rich, it seems his PMs are way down, are players scared to fight him. Could you get a 2-3 minute interview with the coaches of our junior prospects to see what they are working on?

this may not be directly kings related, but i’m going to throw it your way anyway…
i’m not a fan of points being awarded to a team that loses in overtime during the season, its called sudden death for a reason and i see no point crediting a team with a point if they only last a couple minutes into an extra period on 4 on 4. However i do believe that if either team hasnt scored in overtime both teams should be given a point for making it to a shoot-out and the winner should be given the second point.
I think this would make the overtime worth more to finish an opponent and i also believe this would make the shoot-out serve a purpose.
What do you think? Should the NHL continue to award teams a point simply for getting to overtime?

Hi Rich, thanks for doing another Forum. I have always enjoyed these. My question:
There are many visible members of the organization that have been around since the forum-blue and gold days (e.g. Luc Robitaille, Bob Miller, Nick Nickson, Jim Fox, and Daryl Evans). Are there any less visible members of the organization that have been with the club for a long time? Trainers? Equipment guys? Office guys? Etc? I would love to hear their “inside” story and their take on how this year’s Kings team compares to other years. Thanks Rich! Remember to take some time off!

Rich, a few totally unrelated questions…
1. What was the logic to play Drewiske (who seems very much like a stay home D-man) on a wing before the injury to Jones? Jones seems much better fit for offense not just between two of them but actually overall. Granted, we have not seen a whole lot of him yet, but so far his decision making appears to get progressively better as he gets away from his own end.
2. How do players physically get to the Staples Center on the game day/night (i.e. cars/carpool/team bus)? Does it change when they have to fly somewhere right after the game?
3. Do the Kings usually stay at the hotel in Anaheim the night before the game there (I remember that was the case for both Kings and Ducks under Burke a couple of seasons ago)?
4. Would the shooters be at liberty to take the helmets off during the shootout? There is practically no risk of injury and it would make the players more recognizable to at least casual fans. We’d probably see a lot more of “hockey hair” then too.
5. Given the recent rash of injuries, can we force Andy and Terry Murray to submit their respective DNA samples to prove that they are NOT in fact related?

If one player goes down on Kopitars line and he can not score or contribute untill the player returns, what does this say about Kopitar? Rather one thin on talent?

Rich,
Like all the grateful posters out there, I wanted to extend my appreciation for the forum. I wasn’t aware of the daily news blog, so this whole thing is brand new to me, and its amazing. I wish my pops was around to see all of this, special time to be a Kings fan.
And again, much like the WJC tourneys the last couple years, the Kings have a boat load of prospects (WJC) and players (Olys) playing in these tourneys this year. That’s where my question comes from, and I’ll end this post and start the next post w/ my question…

1) What is the most uncomfortable subject you have to deal with in your job? I always felt it would be to critical of players you have to be around.
2) I happen to think DD is a fantastic player, but do you feel he would be getting this much hype if he was a Euro player or even from USA?
[Reply]
Question:
NHL.com had a poll question tonite asking the whole hockey world if they thought Jon Quick would make the US Oly team. Coming into the year, he was probably penciled as the #3, with his slowish start and Craig Anderson’s white hot start, JQ may have fallen to the 4th spot after Oct. Since then, Tim Thomas has played nothing like his Vezina season last year, and Anderson has come back to earth a bit. I had heard/read that much of JQ’s invite to the orientation camp in Aug was in regard to him being the US goalie in the future. 3rd string would be cool, but if he could backup Ryan Miller, that would/could mean a lot to a young goalies confidence and development in representing team USA in the future. Do you think Jon Quick is playing his way into that backup role for the US?

I’d like to know why the players use smelling salts before the periods and if there are any negative effects of long term use (career). Who gets the players into using them and how early in their playing careers is smelling salts introduced to them? Is it only at the NHL level?
[Reply]
Does any of the players family or girl friends travel with the team….or meet them on the road? If so….do the kings help set them up with hotel or plane flights? just wondering.

Is AIG doing to try to improve the ice surface at Staple Center, it is one of the chippest in the NHL?

Not having played hockey, I do not understand what makes a player a “natural center”. Can you explain what traits a player may possess to consider themselves a natural center rather than a winger?

In light of the surprisingly good play of the Phoenix Coyotes so far this season, do you believe that this is more indicative of Dave Tippett’s presence or Wayne Gretzky’s absence?
[Reply]
Rich, thank you again for doing this.
Another off the wall question. Someone earlier asked about the pregame show. What are your thoughts about “A Day in the Life” pregame show for every player? The NHL network used to do (may still do it) a program that followed a player for the entire day of game day. It was awesome to see them in a different light.
My guess is that the fans will 1) watch the show which will then be followed by the game so more viewers. 2) increase the fan base by showing how awesome hockey players are 3)provide a program that no other team in LA is doing to showcase their players. What are your thoughts

Rich. thank you for the great job bringing up to date news on our loved Kings.
My question is will the Kings make a trade to get scoring depth or goaltending depth.? With the way the schedule is, the Kings could be in 7th in west once the holiday break really begins.
I have noticed when the Kings score more than 4 goals in a game have a perfect record, when they score less than 4 goals below .500.
Happy Holidays..

Rich,
A question you might ask DL. In the last draft the Kings seemed to target tougher North American players. Will this trend continue or is DL satisfied that the last draft stocked the organization in that area? Will the pendulum now swing toward speed and skill or is a balance between the two currently planned?
Also in your personal view what do the Kings need to add to the current roster… a specific kind of, or kinds of players to make a legit run at the cup withing the next two seasons?
[Reply]
Hey Rich!
Considering the amount of time you spend with the team, do you think you’ll ever do any in depth, individual interviews with them? It would be cool to get to know them better beyond “Favorite Road Food,” as we see in the programs. It seems you’re in a great position to delve a little deeper.
Happy Holidays.

Rich,
DL has shown he wants the younger players (Manchester) to get playing time this week during the Kings break. I would assume this will be the same during the Olympic break? How many times can these players jump back and forth before waiver rules can happen? If Manchester makes the playoffs, is there any rules on these players playing…like needs to be on team for so many number of games. Thanks.

Rich,
Given the loyal following which you’ve deservedly achieved over the years with your previous job and your Inside the Kings blog, I’m wondering, now that you travel with the team and do a guest spot with the Kings’ announcers and are such a big presence on LAKings.com, have you acquired any “groupies” yet, or a similar legion of cult fans? Do you ever notice any small bands of guys who dress like you and sport similar haircuts to yours, practicing their interviewing skills in the corridors? Any flocks of females with “I [heart] Bloggers” hanging out around the press box?
[Reply]
JPKelly,
I fit the criteria (haircut: check; suit: check; adoring female fans by the wayside: check), and life has been amazing since. Rich has become somewhat of a lifecoach. Thanks again Rich.

Hey Rich,
1)How long until the Kings brass declare that Quick is our legit, #1 goaltender to the point where Bernier becomes expendable. Bernier is a blue chip prospect who would probably have significant value
2)Do you know if Luc and the business folks are planning on lowering the price of “Hockeyfest” next year. By the time August comes around I am dying for hockey, but not for $120 for the g-friend and I. I think that there are many other loyal fans out there that would have loved to come, but were turned away by the price
3)Any feeling that the Dean would make a serious play for Kovalchuk should he be on the trading block at the deadline? I know our scoring is way up, but Kovie is world class.
[Reply]
Btw, any news on the signing of Jake Muzzin?
[Reply]
Hi Rich,
First thank you for your continued dedication to this blog and your very loyal following of Kings fans.
My question is: are you only allowed to interview the players at certain times or at certain places? For example: you are allowed to interview them right after on-ice practice in the locker room, but not in the gym. Or you can interview them wherever whenever as long as they are ok with it? If you would answer for at home and away, for practice and games I would greatly appreciate it. Just fascinated by all aspects of your new position. THANK YOU!!

when will Wayne Simmonds be back ? everyone else ?

Hey Rich,
I’m not sure if this question has been asked before, but is there a reason why Terry refuses to use Frolov in shootouts? Even on nights where Fro appears to have deserved a shot, he gets stiffed.
Thanks!

Is there any way to sinc up the kings radio feed with the ducks tv feed? When the Kings play the ducks and the ducks tv is the only option, I would rather not listen to the ducks comentators. It’s kinda nice hearing Daryl and Nick tell me whats going to happen in 5 seconds, but gets a little confusing.

Hey Rich,
The Kopy Vs Kobe Segment on TSN was funny and all, but it left me confused.
Is it Kopy, or Kopi? Are the Canadians just confused?

how many members are allowed on an NHl roster? what about total under contract in the organization? Also, do college players and junior players who have not signed entry level contracts count toward that number? Is there a limit on the number of junior and college level players a team is allowed to retain the rights of?

Do you think that Ivanans and last year’s fruitcake will go to some “lucky” team for future considerations?
[Reply]
Rich, thanks for taking the time to do this.
1) This has probably been addressed in the past but why were Pete Demers (ex-trainer) and Al Murray (ex head scout) let go ? Was it just a matter of DL wanting a different philosophy from those two positions ?
2) The Kopy vs Kobe segment TSN did was silly. As much as I love the Kings I am realistic about their popularity here. Did anyone from TSN ask for your feedback about that piece ?
3) Do Canadian press give more attention to the Kings since they started off so well this year ?
4) Do you think the Kings will get Lecavlier b/c Eklund says…I kid I kid.

1. How many players on an NHL roster?
2. How many players are allowed under contract at one time in terms of the entire organization?
3. Do junior and college drafted players count against the total in question #2?
4. Is there a limit to the number of junior level and college level players allowed in an entire organization?

Hey Rich. Keep up the great work.
My question:
What’s the story with the mysterious “\” that ominously appears in the upper left corner of your blog? (also shows up on printouts.) If I were to hold down control+shift + click on it (assuming I COULD click on it) … would Praetorians suddenly start showing up at my door, a la ‘The Net’? Would I be wisked away to a secret webcam in Dean’s office, Foxy’s wine cellar, or maybe the Kings locker room? Or maybe we would once and for all finally discover the truth of what REALLY happened in the wee hours of June 3rd, 1993 at Le Forum de Montréal.
I’m scared of that thing. What gives?

Since you understandably don’t want to direct traffic to sites that illegally stream NHL games, can you find out how we can find legal streams?
For example every now and then there’s something on Yahoo sports, or some cable companies allow you to stream stuff that is in your cable package, etc.
In the event that it’s impossible, can you provide some outlet for user supplied info.

Hey Rich,
First off, this is probably my most visited website next to facebook. Now for my question. Would the kings be allowed to switch to an alternate jersey in the 2nd intermission and come out into the third period wearing a different uniform?(Like in mighty ducks 2.) Could it be the OLD black and white jerseys or even the older purple and gold? Thanks.

i left this question in the ‘Prospect to join kings’ area”
what would the group give up for Illya K of Atlanta”
it was reported on a broadcast Sat., that he wants 10 years at 11 million and Atlanta and Illya negotiations are not going well.

Since Army is no longer a king, who now rules the pingpong table?
Also, if the kings were to make the playoffs, which free agent would you like to add to our team?
Thanks as always!

dave in inyokern:
having played center and center midfielder in soccer, i’ll take a shoot at your question.
you have to be able to control play while being surround by the organic flows of the game. there is obviously no outside border to prevent someone on your right or left. you should be able to pass adroitly etiher backhand or forehand, and have great vision to see more of the surface area than other players to anticipate what will happen next in the movenments you take and opponents. he must have the quick hands for taking the faceoffs, also. sometimes, the center isn’t the playmaker i described, but the scorer, where the wings feed the center. for example, joe thornton makes usually more assists than goals. the center also takes the opposite teams center on marking, typically. there are variations on the theme as described, i gave the basics for some clarity, if it helps. also, he isn’t necessary as big in body as the wingers.

Rich,
Presuming that the Kings will use at least some of their prospects to secure trades. What system does the Kings scouting staff have in place to evaluate existing NHL talent?
[Reply]
Hey Rich,
My question concerns the Kings power-play and it’s coach.
Is there any sense that Jamie Kompon, who I understand runs the PP, is being held accountable for the struggles? Murray and Lombardi often publicly hold players accountable, yet I have never heard the assistant coaches criticized. The PP problems go back to last season, and in my opinion are most recognizible when the team NEEDS a goal.
Is there any chance a change will be made to someone with NHL playing experience?
Second question:
Do you see Kings players on stationary bikes after games, and what is the fitness regimine during the season in terms of stamina and outright strength-weight? And, is Simmonds starting to fill-out muscularly?
