Johnson update

After the game, Terry Murray said Jack Johnson “took one off the ankle” on Sheldon Souray’s first-period shot (it had been unclear as to whether the shot hit Johnson’s ankle, or higher). Murray said Johnson underwent a fluoroscopic x-ray — yeah, I don’t know either — the results of which were unclear, and that Johnson would be evaluated again tomorrow in Calgary.

Fluoroscopy is a type of x-ray “movie.” It allows your Radiologist to view an area of interest in “real” time as an x-ray beam is passed through the body part being examined and transmitted to a TV-like monitor. An intravenous (IV) injection of contrast material or “dye” is used to highlight the area, making it a very bright, white image on the TV-like monitor.

Injuries are an every night thing in the NHL this year. Seems to happen in Olympic years (ok maby only in the “new NHL”). It’s only one of my many arguments against NHL players in the Olympics.

    Hey, I’m a radiologist…

Fluoroscopy is simply real-time X-ray, projected on a monitor, while the Radiologist positions the patient relative to the X-ray beam. The resolution real-time on a monitor is usually not as good as film-screen, analog or digital.

The person who performed the fluoroscopy has to interpret what they are seeing while they are moving the patient. The operator can take spot films, but those too are of less resolution.

The final diagnosis will probably require the taking of images of a standard X-ray. That may not occur until tomorrow.

Puck injuries to bone usually involve a bone bruise or fracture. Bet no gross fractures are there, by fluoroscopy, but tomorrow’s plain films will be more definitive. If it’s just a bone bruise, it still may take some time to heal fully. MRI is a better modality to judge bone bruises, as well as soft tissue contusions or lacerations.

In a sentence: We’ll see, probably with more imaging tomorrow.

The “contrast” is what’s also used on CT Scans and MRIs. The dye can actually make your nauseous. I almost threw up on it when I had one done.

By the way, who’s coaching this team? Terry Murray or Andy Murray? These injuries are ridiculous. Thanks God for the 8-day break.

Our Captain came through tonight! So did all the boys…

I’ll probably have to burn my old practice jersey as sacrifice, as I promised…

  17. kris says:

Hay Bako… If it worked without burning then hold off for now. It’s kinda like that drinking prayer we all have said. “I swear I will do never do this again as long as I live” and ofcorse the added part most of us have “and this time, I meen it” lol

The memorable teams win while playing through adversity. It’s clear to me this Kings team will never be completely healthy all season. The younger guys are also getting tremendous opportunities they probably wouldn’t have seen this year.

This may not be the ’88 Dodgers, but I still see the opportunity for something special here. The Blues made a very special run last year despite all the injuries, and I’m guessing this year’s Kings’ team will make everyone forget about what St. Louis did last year. I can’t think of another team in hockey who sustained this great a run over an 82 game stretch while suffering this many injuries. I’m hoping for something unprecedented this year just to say that it happened to the Kings!

BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy: It will be interesting to see what the other tests reveal. Based on what we hear in updates…it would be good to get your take on this situation as it develops.

Hopefully, JJ will be back in the line-up soon. His minutes are huge and will require the others to play more minutes. People may see just how much he really brings to this club, all hype aside. I hope the other d-men will be able to step up well enough to cover. Thank the hockey gods that the Kings will have a break soon to rest and heal.

Now Johnson with an injury. My God, when will all of this stop. Injuries around the league this season have been unreal.
All these young kids on the team deserve plenty of praise for their play and determination in spite of the man losses they’ve suffered.
Makes you proud to be a Kings fan.

On the ‘half full’ side of things, we haven’t tapped Manchesters D before (I can’t remember if Martinez started out the season or not). We’ve got a lot of young talent there that may be chomping at the bit after seeing all the forwards come up.

i will say, rich, which you were probably serious and just reporting the fluoroscopy, but your verbage “yeah, i dont know either” had me laughin out loud. like TM is having to make stuff up its gettin so bad.

Martinez played in the first game of the season. Looked just aweful against the Yotes. Could of been because he got hurt, not sure. Haven’t seen him since.

Edmonton has their far share of injuries as do most clubs.

Better now than going into the playoffs.

Blake, did not count the 2-3 monarch call ups. In either case, you are correct, add them to the list.

Anyone hear the latest on JJ?

    [Reply]

  31. Paul from Oxnard says:

I watched the Oilers broadcast of the game. JJ did come out for a shift or 2 later in the game and it looked like he was skating ok. But I don’t think he played after that shift. To be honest I was surprised to see him come back at all. When he got hit he wasn’t putting any weight on the ankle.

The rash of injuries is because of the crazy schedule. The Kings are tied with Colorado for the most games played already this season (36). San Jose has 2 games in hand on the Kings. Other teams have as many as 5 games in hand.

The Kings regular season started on Oct. 3rd, so in 75 days the Kings have played 36 games. That’s basically a game every other night for over 2 months. It’s hard to keep people healthy when you can’t get them a break. The good news is that after tomorrow’s game the Kings have over a week off to finally take a break and heal up.
