Stoll: injured groin

Jarret Stoll suffered a groin injury in the third period, according to both Stoll and Terry Murray after the game. You might remember that Stoll also had a groin injury last month. There is no immediate timetable for Stoll’s return.

With Stoll out, we’ll be lucky to come out of Canada with 2-3 points. He’s been a huge part of our success over the past 10-15 games, winning key faceoffs, scoring goals, racking up hits…between him and Simmonds out we’ve lost a lot of our toughness. Looks like Moller centering the second line? We need our top line to come up huge before the week off.

Besides the fact that I agree MB is a serious knucklehead, the 3rd goal WAS played poorly by Quick. But that’s the life of the poke-check, all or nothing!!! The timing of it just really seemed to suck since we’ve been coming back as of late and that just killed any chance.

King’s have got to really reassess their situation. They are hurting big time and do you risk more injury by bringing more Monarchs players up? Or do you attempt to make a trade to try and get a few veteran bodies here? It’s a tough call, I bet Kings while ride it out, on a downward trend to their Christmas break. Right now the King’s line up is going to look strikingly similar to last season, and that’s not a good thing.

Tonight’s game looked uninspired to say the least as no one drove to the net, they were a step behind the Canucks on every shift, the shots on the Power Play were average at best. Just shoot the puck, Smyth isn’t around to jump in front of the puck’s so shoot. I don’t get why that fundamental as well as (hitting the net) is always neglected by professionals. As a kid you’re ostracized for shooting wide.

King’s are in a tough spot, because they can’t afford to get into a rut with the conference being as tight as it is. Come on Kings, bounce back.

I trust that our team can compete every single night, no matter the opponent, and they’ve shown that, especially last week. But good teams know how to continue striding even through adversity, now that we’ve got key injuries on our hands (Smyth, Simmonds, Stoll), TM has to show us how good of a coach he and his staff are by mixing up the lines. Our special teams, well more precisely the PP is pathetic, it’s been since the beginning of the year, wouldn’t a GOOD coach want to address this issue? 1) why in the WORLD is Purcell still on the powerplay? 2) He needs playmakers on the PP or guys that can score, why not give Oscar Moller the opportunity, it wouldn’t hurt, would it? Our pp sucks badly enough, it can’t be any worse

I’m with you on that, AK. Sully’s shown a remarkable lack of class since his departure. Now,in perspective… Smyth is due for s return soon. Average recovery of a torn miniscus is 4-6 weeks, but from what has been described Simmer’s injury is of the less serious variety. I’d guess 2-3 for a simple cut-back. Stoll’s last episode with the groin lasted 2 games. Bring Schenn up for two, hit the break and reevaluate when we get back. We’re not going to fall out of contention in the next two games. Chances are great that we come out of Christmas with a healthy Stoll, Smyth, and Simmonds a week or two later.

We started the 3rd period on the powerplay, right? Why would he put the 2nd powerplay unit on when it was a critical part to the game?

TM the genius decides to put Frolov-Handzus-Purcell with Jones and Johnson on the back-end, Handzus loses the draw, they clear it down then we can’t even get out of our own zone. Maybe TM should’ve thought about having Jarrett Stoll take the faceoff or Kopitar? Thats why they’re our number 1 PP unit and it’s not like they were tired, it was at the beginning of the 3rd period, literally the beginning. TM=clown

    Q-

I’m not kidding about Mikus. Opportunities, right? He centered the crap out of Palffy in the Czech league. Granted, not a stellar league, but Palffy has said this kid has passing skills. I did watch a Manch game recently where he seemed to do pretty well. He looked as good, if not better than Cliche IMHO. We’re replacing a center, so why bring up Clune? Are we putting Moller in at center now on an emergency basis?

Kyle Clifford might be a good call for 1 game. Why not? He’d probably beat up more people than Ivanans has this year and actually handle the puck better also.

Back to Mikus. You’re putting him on the 4th line. You’re giving him 6-8 minutes a game. Tell him to play a heavy forecheck and skate like mad on the backcheck and he’ll be fine. I’m sure he’s faster than Ivanans.

I still think a 3rd line of Parse/Elkins/Moller would be QUITE interesting. I know it’s a little scary to have all the youngins on one line like that, but they showed a lot of chemistry in Manch and can score. Not to mention you put all your best forwards (Less Purcell) in your top 2 lines. I wouldn’t mind switching Purcell and Richardson in my latest lineup and let Teddy skate on the 4th line. Probably better that way.

I think he’d last to the break. His injuries tend to be more “freak” injuries than anything else.

  50. Quisp says:

    Cynic re lines:

Parse/Elkins/Moller is not enough defensive protection for Elkins in his first NHL game. This is why I imagined Frolov/Handzus/Moller and Elkins getting limited fourth line minutes. Look, anything could happen. TM might decide to put Elkins on the second line with Brown and Parse or Purcell. I personally think the Frolov/Kopitar/Williams line is treading water.

As far as Purcell goes, I get why people are down on him, but I think TM’s strategy is reasonable. Purcell has the skill; he may as well be put in a position to use it. When Smyth, Stoll, Segal and Simmonds come back, THEN there will be a reckoning. I think it’s likely Moller will emerge victorious from that battle, but it could be Teddy. I would like to see Clune, too, while we’re at it. Lots of things are going to get decided between now and the Olympic break. If Purcell is still not scoring and is still on the roster in February, I’ll be surprised.

  52. holly says:

    Cynic -
That’s the key question, are we looking for a center or a winger? The early assumption with today’s call up was that they’d pull up a winger to replace Simmonds, since they were okay with putting Moller at center. Instead they called up a center. Now we have a center out. So they either put Richardson or Moller as centers again or have to call up another one. And the number of available centers in Manchester is more limited than the wing.

Also, Elkins numbers have been better with combinations of Wesgarth, Clune, and Meckler. I don’t know that he ever played significant time with Moller. He did play with Parse and Segal for a bit.

    [Reply]

  53. Cynic says:

    Q-

I get the thought of defensive protection, but we’re hardly in a position to be too protective here. Guys have to step up in situations like these and chemistry at this point is a hard and valuable thing to come by. P/E/M put up points in bunches in Manch. We could sure use that right now. Moller has been here before. Parse has been here a handful of games now. Elkins can get a little coaching from these two before they step on the ice in EDM. My point was all of your experience is in your 1st 2 lines which will get the most minutes anyway. That, in a sense, is some D- Protection. If P/E/M plays well, you give them more minutes. If they’re a disaster, change up the lines midgame. Really not too much of a risk.

Purcell has skill. He also has a lack of finish. He finishes weak on his checks, finishes weak on his scoring chances, Finishes weak on receiving his passes. Sure he can handle the puck in a phone booth. Doesn’t do any good if he can’t FINISH. He’s just another Frolov who needs another 3 seasons to actually start scoring goals. We need him NOW. I don’t want another Frolov, unless it’s the one who played (now) 3 games ago. When the S’s all come back, I agree it’s clobberin’ time for TP. Ship him and a pick for a LW.

    [Reply]

  54. Vicarious says:

Try Jack Johnson or maybe Frolov at center in Stoll’s spot and spell in Schenn for a game or 3 after his world junior commitment.

After these odd moves, the Kings have enough bodies at the back end if Drewiske can play 12-15 minutes. Maybe this wld hold until Stoll gets back.

I’m curious how Johnson wld manage at center. TM mentioned in one interview Johnson’s hv been perfect for the old rover position, a position I’m too young to remember. I think eventually Johnson could be a good centerman but wld get racked a few times for sure as he started. Anyone remember how well Kurri played at center back the year Gretsky was hurt 92-93? Seems I recall Kurri helped Luc R score like 70 goals.

I’m concerned Stoll’s injury must be pretty serious for him to take himself out of a game. Dude’s a warrior. If so, he may miss an extended period of time while the problem heals, say more than a week or two. That wld suck. He has been playing very strong of late.

IIRC, you watch Manch quite a bit, who would you think is ready to call up? I was positive Parse/Elkins/Moller was the line tearing it up at the beginning of the season because when Parse got called up, the talk was about losing Parse on that line and how it would affect the scoring in Manch. Maybe I’m wrong, but I could have swore that was the line.

Regardless, I’d like to see that line anyway. I like having our best 6 available play top 6, if not to just put the other team on their heels once in a while. We need to give ourselves chances to win games somehow.

can’t a defenseman get injured so that we can see Voynov (wishful thinking again)

    [Reply]

  60. holly says:

Nope. Parse and Moller did play together quite a bit in the first month or so, usually with Loktionov. Elkins has always been a 3/4 line guy for us. Most of his points and time come with guys like Clune, Westy, Segal, and King. He does frequently play the PP. Most of Moller’s points were with Parse, Loktionov and Voynov. Only three of his 18 points occurred with Elkins on the ice, none with points going to Elkins as well. After Parse went up, Holloway stepped in. Elkins played at a point per game in December mostly playing with some combination of Clune, Westy, King, and Meckler.

I think that line could potentially work well together, though the problem may be that Moller isn’t as aggressive as Elkins and Parse can be.

Don’t be surprised if DL doesn’t make a move with Brian Burke and ship TP and a pick (Since Toronto is desperate for picks this draft) for a Jason Blake, Nikolai Kulemin or Alexei Ponikarovsky. Hagman would be stellar but we all know THAT ain’t happenin’. BB likes his game too much I think. Toronto is STACKED with prospects at LW. They can afford to lose one. Still like the idea of P/E/M though. Elkins is 24. He should be able to handle himself, as long as he doesn’t fight. That boy canNOT fight!

Point taken on the 14MM dollar line there, but at least 10MM of that still plays defense and has grit to spare. Purcell just seems to be following Fro’s footsteps less the scoring. How long do we wait? Why is he so tenative with the puck? Will Heidi leave Ryan? Questions like these need answers man!

    Holly-

You mention Moller not being as aggressive as Elkins and Parse. That’s OK. Let Oscar play the slot on the forecheck and have Elkins go in with Parse to dig out pucks along the boards. Since Oscar has played center, this shouldn’t be too tough a transition. A little awkward for Elkins who’ll have to skate his butt off, but Moller is fast enough to cover him on the backcheck if he gets caught.
