The Kings have called up Corey Elkins, on an emergency call-up, today. The Kings are on the ice right now for their morning skate, and Elkins isn’t here, but presumably he will arrive this afternoon.

good move since its early in the week – he can go back to Manchester after the canada road trip without hurting the Monarchs, who badly need him
[Reply]
As a Buckeye fan, I applaud this
[Reply]
always nice to see a new face when you need one… was hoping for clune, but anybody will do at this point! gotta survive the next three and grab as many of the 6pts as possible.
lets go kings!
[Reply]
He has defintely proved himself in Manchester. Hope they give him a chance to prove himself in LA.
[Reply]
I say, if the Kings are down by one with five seconds remaining, we pull quick, send out Smyth in the goalie gear, put him on the red line. Stoll wins the offensive zone face off back to Doughty, who kicks it over to Quick (Smyth) on the red line. Smyth removes his helmet, laughs menacingly, and slap shots it through Bobby Lou’s glove, taking him out of the NHL forever. Kings Win!
[Reply]
I’ll take some of what TomHughes has been smoking this morning!! LOL
[Reply]
Rich
What is the significance of the emergency call up in this situation? Why not just a regular recall?
Thanks.
[Reply]
Isn’t that from the one of the ducks movies
[Reply]
Interesting fact of the day, Corey Elkins and Jeff Zatkoff played together in Sioux City before their respective college days.
[Reply]
yes, Mighty Ducks 2…
anything ducks related = FAIL
[Reply]
Isn’t using a Kings player in a Ducks reference a violation of the rules for this blog? If it isn’t, it should be.
[Reply]
1 out of every 5 would work.
We need to trade for Mike Grier in my opinion, stick him out there with Simmonds and any center to form the feared Oreo Line!
[Reply]
O-R-E-O?
[Reply]
On Corey Elkins from Hockey’s Future:
Talent Analysis
High energy forward that can contribute from a third line. Not offensively talented enough to be productive as a top six forward, but solid enough on both sides of the ice to be trusted on special teams.
Future
Added to the Manchester roster for the 2009-10 season for depth. He is a longshot to make it to the NHL, but if players like Gabe Gauthier, Brady Murray and Matt Ryan have proved anything, it is that even a high energy forechecker can find his way into Staples Center for a brief moment in the spotlight.
I think we should have called up Brayden Schenn.
[Reply]
Schenn, that’s what I said but there are issues with his status or something like that.
[Reply]
Stuart: Havent you seen the original? Think colours not letters
[Reply]
Yes, of course I’m quite familiar with the tasty cookie-cream-cookie snack. I was cracking up replaying the commercial in my head.
[Reply]
“I think we should have called up Brayden Schenn.” And, make him a pro before allowing him to develop correctly when the team is not in a dire situation that requires the Kings to do so?
Why?
[Reply]
Tom, you had me at “Smyth”.
[Reply]
This is a temporary situation..what good would calling up Schenn do(not sure if we could anyway)
We’re getting Symthe back after the break and from the sound of Simmer’s injury, he shouldn’t be long term either.
This is why you build up depth in your minor leagues…for temporary short term fill ins.
I recall reading when Smytty went down how we needed to make a huge trade. We were going to collapse..etc
All is well with the Kings. No need to panic over anything.
[Reply]
Tom Hughes: …………..Genius!!!
[Reply]
Let Schenn develop. Don’t ruin him. He’ll have Memorial Cup experience and make the team next year. Future line: Clifford/Schenn/Brown
[Reply]
If we call up Schenn, he’ll get injured. Didn’t you read Rich’s post about the “S Curse”?
[Reply]
Schenn …. World Canadian Junior development camp. Not happening!
[Reply]
Sucks that coincidentally these past few call ups have been on “the Hoser swing” north and therefore not televised, would love to see these guys play a bit. Is Elkins a bit of a “mini Parse” type then?
Any chance of our gracious blogger getting a hold of one Mr Lombardi for a “state of the Kingdom” interview?
[Reply]
I agree with seabass! GO BUCKS
[Reply]
They’re calling up Elkins for the 3 game trip to Canada. After Smyth gets back Elkins goes back down. So, why the hell are you guys talking about ruinning Schenn by bringing him up too early? We brought him up last month for a game. Its the same situation!!
[Reply]
Comedy winners for this post go to…
Scott G: funny
Skebo: very funny
OneTimer: f-ing hilarious
[Reply]
I wonder if we’ll ever see Cliche…
[Reply]
I wasnt talking about bringing Schenn up to stay. Let him come up for another cup of coffee. We wont be in a position (as we have been for the last 8 years) to empty our minors for the last month of the season so let’s bring him up to taste what the speed of the NHL is really like. I’m all for Schenn.
[Reply]
JDM – I was wondering the same thing. Poor guy (Cliche) seemes to be buried as much as Gabe Gauthier under the pile of prospects.
I think Elkins is getting the call (maybe) because of his age. Maybe the Kings figure this is an opportunity to give an older prospect a shot to see what his worth is before they have to start making room for the new class in the 2010 draft. Elkins is 24 and hasn’t had a chance at the dance yet. I know he was just signed this year, but we’re DEEP at center it seems. Gotta start weeding ‘em out, maybe get some value in a trade for LW’s down the line.
I think it was nice of Juraj Mikus to let Corey go ahead of him. So unselfish. We all know he is consistently the first choice for a call up. He just keeps refusing so all his teammates get their shot first. What a TEAM guy!
[Reply]
“So, why the hell are you guys talking about ruinning Schenn by bringing him up too early? We brought him up last month for a game. Its the same situation!!”
Notimpressed, it’s not the same situation at all.
The league allows for a one game NHL tryout, so to speak, which does not put into activate any sort of official pro status contracts or payments.
If the kings brought him up again, from what I have read on this blog and the official site, he would be considered a professional and it would start eating a chunk out of the budget and I think take away from those ten pro games that an pro am gets before becoming an official NHL roster member and all that jazz. There’s a lot more to it for sure.
At any rate, they only brought him up last time because the kings had that one day free pass to use him. If that happens again agents, league officials watching out for how the team handles the situation, annoyances get in the picture.
[Reply]
I still like the idea of moving JJ to forward as we have debth at defense.
[Reply]
KC23
What makes you think JJ can play forward?
[Reply]
They essentially couldn’t call Schenn up again.
Still would’ve preferred Cluner, but there’s nothing wrong with Elkins getting the nod.
[Reply]
As long as we’re making lemonade with the lemons we’re getting, I think it’s a great chance for all these young players to get a feel for “the show.”
[Reply]
Some night I think we do have debths at defense, but most nights I see depth.
[Reply]
Great! maybe I should check my own spelling before I make cracks at other people’s typos, eh?
2 minutes in the box!
[Reply]
Gary Livingston, thanks for the clarification.
[Reply]
I think a lot of people underestimate the talent Elkins brings to the table. He has great vision and play making ability and is very patient with the puck. Excited to see what he can do with the big boys!
[Reply]
According to Morris, Cliche is not 100%, but who is these days. Wonder if Cliche may have been called up instead of Elkins if he was 100%?
Looking forward to seeing Elkins play tonight.
[Reply]
Guess we’ll have to wait to see Elkins tomorrow night.
