Murray, on Simmonds' injury

Here’s what Terry Murray said today about Wayne Simmonds’ injury, starting with the basic question of, “What happened?”

MURRAY: “You know, we really don’t know what happened. It did not happen in the game. There is no specific time or situation. He’s just got a lower-body injury and he’s going to be out a while. He’s going to see our doctors here tonight at the game, and we’ll take it from there.”

Question: It’s a hockey-related injury though, right?
MURRAY: “Yeah, it’s hockey-related. But again, that’s the problem. It’s not anything we can look at, because he finished the game, obviously, and everything was going fine. It’s just something that came on, and it’s a problem for him.”

Question: Sounds like more of a lingering thing, maybe?
MURRAY: “Yeah, it’s going to take some time, I think. I’m going to have a chance to talk to the doctor at the game, and maybe I can get some first-hand information. Not that I’m going to talk about it a lot, but at least have a better idea on the time.”

    What happened?

That really doesn’t sound good. You never like to hear “a while”.
This is going to be a tough injury to replace. Not too many guys can play the way he does and be as effective.

Dallas won’t be crying for us…time to step it up and kick their asses.

Rich if you can get an update today on wether Ryan Smyth was cleared by the doctor that would be great (Assuming he does see the doc today). We’re hoping here in Vancouver that he’ll be back in the lineup and play Monday

Was at practice today and seen WS leaving the facility on cruches… didnt look good at all. He was walking with cruches to his car with Drew and it looked like he had his right leg up while puttin all his weight on his left foot? but didnt notice a cast though… hope he heels quick.

    Bobby Scribe-

I’m with you, I’m sick of all this secrecy around these injuries. After all the hush hush with Scuds injury TM goes and tells everyone what it was anyways. So what was the point of keeping it a secret to begin with.

I’m going with the dreaded high ankle sprain or a groin pull.

  7. variable says:

groin or shoulder…is my best guess…if i had to speculate…

    anyway…

we are going to further find out how special this kings team is in the next couple of weeks…if we can get the secondary scoring we’ve been getting and get kopi & co. started again, these unfortunate personnel losses won’t be as devastating as believed to be…

we just have to keep on winning…that seems to help everybody not dwell on the dreaded injury bug…which rears it’s ugly head, once again, on a kings’ team that’s bursting with promise…

    [Reply]

  8. variable says:

i realize the shoulder is not a “lower body” part…but at this point, as it has been indicated by the aforementioned posts by others, who knows if “lower body” is double-secret code for something in a completely different body area…

I don’t get this. How does one know it’s Hockey related if one doesn’t know when it happened

  10. Cynic says:

This is NOT good. By far our best forechecker and with Smyth still out, Scott Parse is now up to bat. He gets to be Simmer until he returns and we are going to need him tonight against the Stars.

So was I like ‘Captain Obvious’ with that quote? Sorry.

I kind of wish Richardson would center the 4th line of Ivan and Harrold and put Oscar on that third line with Parse and Zeus. Reason being is Parse and Richie are our 2 best forecheckers and having them on the same line leaves our 4th line thin of a threat to strip the puck. I hope TM might consider that change once in a while during the game if we need to wratchet up the forecheck for continuoous shifts.

Let’s turn Turco into Turkey! (OK, Corny)

Why can’t he just tell us what happened, what’s wrong, and when we can expect him back? This hush hush b.s. isn’t fair to the fans.

Maybe heidi was out drinkin with simmer and one thing led to another and they ended up getting a dui together. But the cop didnt like black people so he got nightsticked to his groin, then heidi ran off into the night…….ok, that was far fetched but these guys make us draw our own conclusions with this top secret BS.

  14. TB says:

I’m thinkin groin too…or maybe back spasms? The good news is that this isn’t sounding something big. But as we know by now, when TM says a while, its gonna be a while.

As good as Simmer is, I don’t think its as horrible for the team as some of us want to think it is. Of course the guy will be missed, but again…its just another opportunity for someone else to shine. You guys could be right in saying that this is a really bad break, but I’m hoping that like they did with smyth, they just keep on rolling along. Richie is going to be the difference maker tonight…

  15. Cricket says:

Simmonds had started all of his NHL games to this point. His missed games, like Richardson’s goals, apparently come in bunches.

  16. John OC says:

you can tell how good someone will recover by how hard they try in the game. Simmonds has mad heart and never gives up. He will fight through the injury and wont milk it, its not his style. But he couldnt have picked a worse month tho right? this month is the deciding factor for the Kings. If they can get thru this month above .500 then they have hope.

  17. variable says:

    IANSEZ…

yeah, yr right…it’s been only in recent seasons that a nhl players regular season injury is more protected than our president…

i think the secrecy is further enhanced by the team’s success…when you are achieving as much as the kings have this season, opponents will look for any advantage they can muster…so i understand the reasoning, to a certain extent…

so unless you visibly witness in person the player and their injury in question, yr not suppose to know…?

i know some injuries are more obvious than others…but what does the team do…? hide simmer, smytty and co. in a public storage facility near lax until they can play again…?

i guess this is an open question to rich…:

at what point does common sense prevail vs. team security…?

at what point…if ever…do you feel you have to call a black horse…well…black…?

tom brady is notoriously listed with the same shoulder injury week after week on the injury report…yet, this hasn’t enabled others to exploit that…

i just wonder whether or not all this secrecy and protection relates to a whole lotta’ wasted time and energy…(?)

Amazing how just this morning I was thinking how great it is that the Kings have a player who sort of came out of nowhere that has amazing potential and everyone is excited about….. then I thought I’d do my daily check of lakingsinsider…… and guess what I found. What a …. shame. As variable says, it’s another test for this team. One thing for sure, we aren’t the only team having to fight thru injuries.
Last comment… before the season I was thinking how relatively injury free they were last year except JJ. So it’s not amazing that we aren’t getting two consecutive injury free years.

With Kings’ fans abuzz with speculation, team officials today revealed Ryan Smyth’s upper thorax injury to be a strained exoskeleton. Smyth stated that he can no longer float like a butterfly and sting like a bee.

Is it just me or are players now out of the lineup with injurys for there full time period now, use to be if they felt good they came back whenever they felt they could, now i guess with insurance and huge contracts the pressures of training staff and doctors and coaches decide for them, its getting ridiculous, because you all know as i do a guy like smitty would have been back 2 weeks ago if it was only his decision!

  23. Verno says:

Gotta be GROIN ala Frolov since they play that similar style of puck protection in the corner.

A lot of strain is placed on that area.

This is a pretty big loss since Simmonds has been the main catalyst to the Kings scoring success as of late.

He’s got some big shoes to fill. Time for other guys to step it up.

I can’t believe it. Simmer has been playing awesome. I’d like to know when he got the injury. I didn’t see it in the games. Was it at practice? Maybe the Christmas break will help. Dallas & Sharks had a good game last night. We need to take it to ‘em tonight.

  32. DBargaehr says:

As someone who plays a fair amount of hockey, I know what it’s like to have something lingering like that and not notice it during the game. In the rush of the game, you don’t feel anything, and the next day you realize you goofed something up stretching for the puck or crashing the net. Typically for me, it’s my groin or hip flexor, but I’ve partially torn a quad before and played through the game without noticing until the day after.

If we’re lucky, it’s purely a strain, which just takes a few days to let the swelling go down so it unstiffens and allows full range of movement. If we’re unlucky, it’s a tear or a moderate sprain (if it was a major sprain, he would definitely notice).

Bad news but we gotta keep rollin’. If ever Fro needed to step up, this is it. MAN UP FRO!!

Sucks that Simmer is injured (and accompanying secrecy that we’ve come to know, love and hate).

A little off topic, but there is a certain joy that comes with the type of homer-casting that the Bruins have. I’m a New England girl, and thus do enjoy the Bs, but Jack Edwards is really, really, really special. Ooh, but look at me bring this right back around to semi-on topic… His call on Lucic’s hit on Randy Jones this past March is the perfect example. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJXs5AaWIbY
