Blues postgame quotes

Here are some postgame thoughts from Andy Murray, Andy McDonald and Chris Mason…

COACH ANDY MURRAY
“We got the two points today. We’ve played two very good teams. San Jose – top of the league – and, in my opinion, the L.A. Kings are one of the best teams in the league. So for us to get four points on this road trip is gratifying. I liked our determination and the fact that when they scored that one goal, that we came right back and carried the play. I thought our game in the offensive zone was good. Our compete level was at a high level, for the most part.”

ANDY McDONALD
“It was a big win for us. We wanted to be a little bit more solid closing games out, but we’ve played well the last two games on the road and hopefully it will continue at home. We think we’ve kind of turned the corner a little bit. I like the way we’ve been playing [defensively] and we’re starting to get a little more offense – which has been a problem for us – so hopefully it’ll continue and we’ll string some games together.”

CHRIS MASON
“It was a really good win. The [Kings] have been really hot and really good on the power play. That was definitely a good road trip for the team. We knew it was going to be a [high-scoring] game. They have a lot of offense. We would probably like to keep it a little bit lower scoring, but we scored some goals tonight and we put the puck in the net in the shootout.”

LOL. Obviously Mason hasn’t been watching any Kings games recently if he thinks our PP is really good.

Yeah, that is odd, AZ King….not the kind of thing you’d expect from a goaltender, who you’d think would know better who he’s facing than most players.

Glad to hear that we’re still Andy’s second favorite team in the League.

Wish we’d have won, but I’ll take the point and move on.

    Rich,

I’m curious about how quotes are modified like Mason’s above: “The [Kings] have been really hot and really good on the power play.”

This seems to imply that what Mason said was: “The have been really hot and really good on the power play.” What he most likely said was “They have been…” So how do the rules work insofar as changing quotes like the one above? Why put [Kings] in brackets at all? Why not word it like: “They [the Kings] have been…” This would be more true to his original quote, if that is the desired outcome in instances such as this, or does that just not read properly, so some tweaking is required? And if the tweaking is required, why not just tweak the quote without the brackets?

I know this isn’t a Journalism 101 site, but if you have a moment and the inclination, I would be very interested in having my curiosity sated. Thanks!

Datacloud…I’m always good for a Journalism 101 question. In this case — and as is usually the case with visiting-team quotes — the quote was provided by the Kings via the standard quote sheet. I always try to run through them to make sure they’re grammatically correct, but I missed one here. This would be hard for me to change, because I don’t know exactly what Mason said. If he did indeed say, “They have been…,” I would typically do exactly what you said, which is to change it to “They (the Kings)…” It’s also very common to just go with “(The Kings) have been…” There’s no hard-and-fast rule on that, but it’s important to be careful when you tweak quotes at all. They should only be changed so as to make things clearer to the reader, and never to change the intended meaning…
