Last night’s game featured perhaps the best goaltending, combined, I have seen all season. It’s not a stretch to say that Jonathan Quick had his best game of the season, and Roberto Luongo, as he usually does, just showed tremendous calm and patience. Watching him, Luongo gives you the feeling that you’re going to have to do something special to beat him, and you can’t say that, consistently, about a lot of goalies. Here’s what Terry Murray thought of the goalie play…
MURRAY: “Luongo was very good, very sharp. That’s why he’s one of the premier guys in the league. But at the other end, we were very pleased with our goaltender too. That was a real battle. I think there was a lot of motivation there, on Quick’s side of it, when you play against Luongo. It was a good goaltending situation tonight.”

Quick was awesome…

Hey Rich, Not to change the subject, but do you think you could get some feed back from the players directly about their thoughts on some of the comments in here(good or bad)and give the fans a chance to comment.

The Vancouver announcer hacks mentioned that it was the best Luongo played all year. Which of course was against the Kings!

Don’t give up on Quick Kings fans! For the next three games, pay close attention to the saves he makes on pure athleticism…We haven’t had a goalie with this kind of quickness, and ability since Potvin. He’s a sophmore, and soft goals are going to happened-ask steve mason, but his potential is limitless, and his defense can put him into Luongo-esque numbers. Be excited guys, the best is yet to come!
Sincerely,
Jeff-the guy who knows hockey

Darko, Your right! Their is a lot of potential there fans just aren’t seeing.Sometimes it’s easiest for fans to blame the goal
tender when things don’t go your way.I see a goalie that who so far beats out any goaltender we’ve had here since the 1rst. year Potvin was hear when we won against Detroit in the play offs.

….and by happened, I mean happen

I don’t understand what it is about LA and goaltenders. We’ve consistantly had sub par goaltending(even w/goalies who have proven themselves w/ other teams)since Rogie left.Meanwhile teams like Anahiem,Florida,San jose and alot of other teams have always been able to find great Goaltending that can carry a sorry team until they improve.I don’t know what curse we have to erase but I’m glad with what I’ve seen from Quick.
[Reply]
By the way I didn’t forget Hrudy. He did take us all the way to the finals, but it was our scoring that led the way.
[Reply]
Goaltending appears much stronger too with a strong defensive system in place.

Hrudey…my favorite king goalie of all time
[Reply]
Yeah, but you won’t see his # in the rafters.
[Reply]
I liked him,but not after 94′

Who was the guy out there with Hardy working during practice?

I agree Quick was good last night but still he allowed 3 goals in 33 shots. At this point he doesnt show signs of being a stellar goalie – at least not to me – tho he is young. In his 24 starts he has had save percentage in each individual game that was above the league average of .910-.915 only 8 times – that just doesnt win you many close games. But I say leave Bernier in Manchester at least until later this season, and give Quick a full opportunity. We’re still a young, building team, no matter how antsy some fans get to win every game NOW.
[Reply]
I say bring Bernier in next year with a few more free agents and give him a fresh chance with his own team.
[Reply]
there i couldnt agree more Dominick ! Next year with Bernier… ( one more year in a.h.l. )…and 1 or 2 good sniper free agents .. ( so we dont lose our farm ) thats what i want too…

If you look at a post from yesterday when everyone was saying how bad the Oilers announcers were but no one is worse than Hayward, I said John Garrett is the worst of all time, and that was before the Kings game last night. I live in BC and have to listen to that idiot all the time for the past 10 years and I can’t stand him. Absolutely THE worst announcer in sports…
[Reply]
Hrudey was a swimmer. He was the right goaltender for the Kings at the time, because some nights he was going to face 45 shots. The idea was to have someone that was comfortable eating a lot of rubber and willing to swim to win a 5-4 game (which was pretty unusual in those days.) I have to admit, my favorite goalie so far, but not because he’s the guy I’d want today. Then again, that’d be Grant Fuhr, and he did the Kings no favors when he came over.
[Reply]
KingsFan2316, I agree with your thoughts on Garrett, infact his announcer asked him if he had gotten up on the wrong side of the bed that morning. He really laid into Schenn because “He was taking the plcae of a player from Manchester”, he shoots his mouth off and doesn’t even know anything about our guys. But I do know about him and that is, he sucked as an NHL goaltender, it wasn’t until King Richard came in that the Canucks did anything.
[Reply]
Sounded like Quicker was awsome last night (his normal self). He needs to stay that way and stop being so inconsistent. Show up every game sir and you give the team a chance! We need you now during the injuries!
[Reply]
when are u people gonna get it …. it dosent matter how talented quick or how great he is, because he is both those things … bit he will never be any good until he stops coming so far out, leaving himself hopelessly out of position for any rebound , deflection offa scrum in front, or a shot wide off the back boards … hes killing us …. did any of you ever stop to think that all these brillant saves he makes are many times when he is scrambling back …… if he were deeper in his net like most nhl goalies alot of the second chance saves would be rountine instead of the spectacular variety … and of course many times hes so far out all he can do is watch as the other team breaks our back with an easy freebie tap in goal …. he needs to stop coming so far out … if he keeps doing it this way the team will never win and his numbers will never improve … we give the opponents way too many freebie empty netters because of quicks style …. now if he ever decides to back up 2 or 3 feet he could very easily be the best goalie in the nhl … but so far he hasnt … so the team is screwed and so our us fans
[Reply]
No one is going to listen to some clown who shows such disrespect as to use the term “clippers of the nhl.”
Go away.

its the appropriate respect this pathetic franchise deserves ….. by the way, dont attack other bloggers … you dont like someones opinion or disagree with it, then simply ignore it …… attacking the team or praise the team , thats fine , thats what this blog is for – the team …. not to attack other bloggers

I have to confess that when I saw him play last year (am in ny so don’t get to see him that often) I had the same feeling. I just felt that this guy has something special. Also, Marc Andre Fleury was not so special his first two years. It took a while. The guys that turn into special goalies, how often do we hear about them in their first year or two? Brodeur? I don’t know, I wasn’t following him then, but there aren’t many Brodeurs or Roys around.

clippers of the nhl says:

clippers, maybe you’re right, and maybe not. I don’t know. But even if you are, again, he’s still young and will start to figure it out himself… eventually if he sees he’s being beaten by the same type of play over and over he’ll start to adjust
The one area where I ’sort of’ agree w you though is I remember them saying about JS Giguerre that he didn’t make so many spectacular saves as he was very sound positionally so I’ll give you that
[Reply]
Clippers, when the shooter is coming in on you, the move is to go out and cut the angle down, his only job is to take the shooter, if the forwrds or D miss the guy coming down the opposite wing or from behind the net that’s their fault not the goaltenders. I would suggest you start watching what is going on around the goal rather then just watching Quick. And Marty Brodeur, I still see Stephen Mateau tucking the winner in that elimanated the Devils in the playoffs because Marty didn’t cover the short side and he was DEEP in the net.
[Reply]
Clips, 52 is right – gotta come out. Quick let some in from the high slot but the majority of the bad goals came from turnovers in our zone where Quick didn’t have a chance. Some of those turnovers by our superstar – JJ.
If the Kings don’t make the playoffs this year (still 50/50), there should and will be some serious housecleaning at the top.
I’ll be at the game tonight watching those hot Hawks wreak havoc on our boys who are in such a current state of confusion. Go Kings!
PS My God, what if the Kings ever got someone like Heatley!!??
[Reply]
I think the kings should consider trying bernier as backup and give him a real shot.
[Reply]
It’s been said before, but obviously needs to be said again. This is the wrong time to bring in a goaltender. The time to bring in a goaltender is when the team is playing well defensively and the impression is not being made that the goaltender must “save the team.” That’s how you ruin a young goaltender.
Besides, Quick has obviously stepped it up a notch since he had a chance to work on his game (before Edmonton.)

kenneth once agin you resort to childish behavior, …. i know more about this team and sport than u ill ever know clown ….as for u others …. yes coming out to cut down the angle has its place and time but only when its a lone player situation not when the play is bogged down in your end and when 10 guys are in the zone …….. did u guys see the second goal last game? …. total freebie as usual by quick … another empty net as quick is hopelessly out of position for a rebound or deflection … look how far out he is when that goal is scored and how softly and easily the canuck player shot it into a wide open net … u see thats what im talking about when all 10 guys are in the zone ……. when its a breakaway or some guy is flying down the wing and a defensemen is closing in on him and u know hes going to unload a slapper well fine u can ome on that too if you want as long as u know hes the only player …. but he comes too far out when 10 players are in the zone, giving up freebie goals into empty nets off rebounds, deflections off scrums , or bank shot off back dasher boards …. easy tap in freebies ….. and regarding some of u said its the defensemens fault …. look , the defensemen arent perfect, theres always going to be times in a game where someone come free , but its the job of the goalie to be aware of his surroundings and be the final line of defense …. quick coming so far out is making it too easy for other teams …. they dont even have to work for it ….. check out the second goal in the vancouver game and u should see what im talking about ……….. quick has no business being that far out on a routine point with all 10 players in the zone
[Reply]
routine point shot ….. yeah there were some other typos, sorry i typed it too fast
